Carroll Cloar Art Museum and Southern Literature Center ARCH 2711: Design Studio 1

For this project, I created a museum for a select number of Carroll Cloar’s paintings as well as a center for Southern Literature. This project also included a library and writer’s pods as part of a Southern Literature Center. The site provided was a section of the Mississippi River bluff located in Memphis, TN, with a dramatic amount of elevational changes that provided a distinct challenge in the design. The specifications of the project required a lobby, gallery space, classroom, library, and private writer’s pods. This design revolves around the copper beacon of the classroom visible from every side of the building to accentuate the importance of teaching a new generation about art and literature.

In order to truly take advantage of the views of the site, the museum needed to work with the natural incline of the site. To do this, the private writer’s pods and open overlook patio are prjected out over the land in a fashion similar to the wake of a river boat with an angled support that reduces the impact to the riverside. Sanctuary in Speculative Dwelling ARCH 2712: Design Studio 2

Located off of Carnes Avenue near the University of Memphis campus, this project entails the design of a speculative dwelling amongst a prospective development lead by the firm Brg3s and developer Laurynas Petrauskas. Challenged with a limited lot size and close quarters with neighboring homes, the design of the house was heavily impacted by its site restrictions. My design focused on creating a safe space amongst the tight space that alleviates the feeling of sheer closeness by providing large windows in private spaces, tall ceilings, and plenty of clerestory lighting running along each wing of the second floor. The addition of wood column walls along the garage provide the illusion of openness even in the exterior spaces of the townhouse.

In order to provide large windows within the private bedrooms of the home without looking into the neighbor’s home, the butterfly roof slope provides the perfect space for clerestory lighting along both wings of the townhouse. This provides plenty of lighting and views of the sky without impeding on the privacy of the home. The master suite also holds a large private balcony for the residents of the home made special by its projection from the eastern elevation of the townhouse.

The layout of the townhouse was designed to allow a seperation between the private and public aspects of life and entertainment. This includes a private upstairs living space exclusive for the residents and family, seperate from the downstairs living area open to guests. Featuring a sizable balcony and plenty of storage, this space is perfect for enjoying time at home in privacy.

Adaptive Reuse: Creatives CoOp ARCH 3713: Design Studio 3

Creatives CoOp is a business designed to give aspiring designers and creatives a place to come hang out, work, and get proper connections for a membership fee. I proposed a design that met the needs of the client in a fun, comfortable fashion using industrial dust silos found on the existing site. I found ways to recycle the silos in unique ways to provide a place of inspiration and curiosity that would encourage clients to enter and have be encouraged to gather and work together in this cooperative environment. This includes a “park” on the western side of the building where clients can have pop-up shops to sell their art or products.

A Place for Speaking and Listening ARCH 4715: Design Studio 5

Located at 302 S. Washington St. in Ripley, TN, this project aims to turn an existing building into a speech therapy and audiology clinic. The goals of this design were to create visibility and connection through simple circulation and a large central atrium that extends all the way to the back. This double height space allows the patient to wayfind their way through the building to mitigate feelings of confinement or confusion. All circulation revolves around this space in three simpe spaces: reception, the central atrium, and the outdoor patio and garden. Each of these spaces play upon different senses to enhance the experience as one moves throughout the space. Perforated Aluminum screens provide shade and interesting visual patterns around the reception and entry space. A bamboo planter provides life and seating to the central atrium. Finally, a seated bubbling fountain greets patients and workers alike in the meditation garden.

28

29

30

When beginning this project, my first move was to ensure easy circulation for patients and employees within the space. I began this process by extending the existing gabled entrance all the way through the building. I then centered all circulation around this atrium so that no matter where you are in the building, this extended form will guide you.

THE GARDEN EMULATES A COOL, GREEN SPACE THAT STIMULATES THE AUDITORY AND TACTILE SENSES THROUGH A BURBLING FOUNTAIN AND LUCIOUS IMBEDDED GREEN WALL.

FOCUSING ON THE SENSES OF SIGHT AND FEEL, THE RECEPTION BRINGS IN WARM BANDS OF LIGHT IN A SEGMENTED PATTERN SIMILAR TO BAMBOO.

ATRIUM THE ATRIUM IS A TRANSITION SPACE FOCUSED ON PROVIDING A TACTILE AND SIGHT BASED EXPERIENCE WHERE ONE CAN FIND RESPICE FROM THERAPY WITHOUT VENTURING OUTDOORS.

Open air, sunlight, and greenery are important to the redesign of this clinic. Every space has access to sunlight through skylights or windows, even the therapy room and reception are marked by circular skylights that bring light to central tables and spaces. The central atrium has a large skylight that pours through the central bamboo planter that acts as natural shade and creates a private seating space. The meditation garden provides a peaceful environment with a shaded patio and a fountain with interior seating to both cool the space and provide sensory stimulation.

Shelby Farms Cabin Visual Design ARCH 4515: Exploration in Visual Communication

Located in beautiful Shelby Farms, this project aimed to further visual skills by relocating an existing cabin design into a new location. The existing cabin is Hadar;s House by Asante Architecture & Design. The original cabin is located on the coast of the Norwegian Sea, so I chose a lake side view in Shelby Farms as the location for my renders. I challenged myself to turn a daylight image into a nighttime render utilizing skills and methodology I learned in Photoshop and Revit.

100 North Main Memphis City Year ARCH 4716: Design Studio 6

City year is an American educational non-profit organization that partners with public schools in cities and communities that need educational aid. The organization provides a stipend to those who are accepted as members of the City Year team to provide them a place to stay while they serve these underdeveloped communities. This project aims to create an alternative to sending these young adults out to find their own housing, and thus provide them with a living space that is both safe and comfortable in Memphis’s own iconic 100 North Main, the tallest building in the city. Most of the young adults accepted for these positions are leaving their homes for the first time and looking for help in their own lives. Utilizing an open plan, plenty of daylighting, and proper amenities, my design aims to mitigate the discomfort of moving to a foreign community and better the wellbeing of all who live within. The roof is home to green spaces, garden plots, and a large cafe run by the City Year students to provide a learning experience and the opportunity to serve the community in a different way.

100 North Main has a great presence in Memphis that is stunted only by its current abandonment. When working on the facade of the top two floors, I wanted to ensure I maintained the integrity of the building’s envelope by only making changes within the projections. The projections still maintain the original building’s grid and alignment down to the mullions, to fully retain as much of the original design as possible without compromising program. I wanted to ensure that this design created the greatest possible sense of safety and comfort through the programming, layout, and sense of openess.
