TRHOUGHOUT THIS COURSE I GAINED NEW INTRESTS AND OVERCAME MANY CHALLENGES. I LEARNED HOW TO FOLLOW DEADLINES AND INCORPORATE FEEDBACK INTO MT WORK. IN ADDITION, I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE SIMPLICITY OF SHAPES AND HOW TO PLAN OUT PROJECTS. OVERALL I AM PROUD AT WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IN THIS CLASS AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHAT ELSE I WILL ACHEIEV AT ST. NORBERT. THIS WAS A GREAT BEGGINER CLASS TO LEAD ME INTO THE REST OF D. SCHOOL.

FREEDOM THIS PROJECT GOT US WORKING ABUNDANTLY AND ITERATIVELY WITH BOTH WORDS AND IMAGES. THE FASTER PACE ENCOURAGED US TO WORK LOOSER AND FREER WITH AN INITIAL EMPHASIS ON QUANTITY OVER QUALITY. OPPRESION GESTALT IS AN ORGANIZED IMAGE THAT REPRESENTS MORE THAN WHAT IS ACTUALLY SHOWN IN THE PICTURE. IN THE DOT LINE PROJECT WE CREATED A GESTALT IMAGE THAT EXPRESSED EMOTIONS AND ADJECTIVES THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO A PICTURE. IT WAS QUITE DIFFICULT FOR ME TO MAKE A “WELL-CRAFTED OBJECT”. I PERSONALLY LIKE TO TAKE TIME TO MAKE MY WORK LOOK GOOD ALTHOUGH IT CAN BECOME DIFFICULT WITH OTHER STUDIES AND PRIORITIES. THIS PROJECT DEFINITELY CHANGED MY VIEW ON HOW DIFFICULT ABSTRACTION IS. I NEVER KNEW HOW HARD IT IS TO PROPERLY PORTRAY A WORD THROUGH SHAPES AND SPACE. IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE ILLUSTRATIONS THAT DID NOT PORTRAY AN OBJECT THAT WE FIND FAMILIAR. I LIKED DOING A HANDS ON PROJECT IN WHICH WE SHAPED AND POSITIONED THE MEDIA WITH PAPER AND GLUE INSTEAD OF A PEN OR PAINT BRUSH IN WHICH I AM MORE USED TO.

IN- PROCESS TYPOGRAPHY OBJECTIVES: EXPERIMENT WITH A VARIETY OF HAND LETTERING, THINK ABOUT HOW THE FORM OF LETTERS IMPACTS THE MEANING OF THE WORD, TO BUILD A FOUNDATION OF USING ABUNDANT ITERATIONS TO ARRIVE A SUCCESSFUL SOLUTIONS, AND TO PRACTICE EXCELLENT CRAFT IN YOUR FINAL SOLUTIONS.
WHAT SURPRISED ME ABOUT THIS PROJECT WAS THE AMOUNT TIME ONE MUST SPEND FIGURING OUT SPACING AND DIMENSIONS OF THE LETTERS AND THEIR NEGATIVE SPACE. I FOCUSED ON INCORPORATING NEGATIVE SPACE IN A LETTER WHILE STILL ALLOWING IT TO BE READABLE. IN THREE OUT OF THE FOUR WORKS I FOCUSED ON HOW A BEAM OF LIGHT CAN BE INCORPORATED IN THE WORD BEAM. WHILE ONE OF THE WORDS I TRIED TO RESEMBLE THE BEAMS OF THE BARE STRUCTURE OF EACH LETTER. I LEARNED HOW TYPE CAN REPRESENT A CERTAIN MOOD OR THEME. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF TYPE AS JUST WORDS BUT EACH LETTER IS THEIR OWN DESIGN THAT CAN PORTRAY A MOOD. IF I WERE TO FURTHER MY EXPLORATION IN EXPRESSIVE TYPOGRAPHY I WOULD LIKE TO LOOK INTO CREATING A WHOLE ALPHABET OF MY OWN UNIQUE TEXT.

OBJECTIVES: • TO EXPERIMENT WITH A VARIETY OF MEDIA AND MODES OF MAKING • TO SHOW RANGE, CREATIVITY AND CURIOSITY IN EXPERIMENTATION • TO CREATE UNEXPECTED YET RECOGNIZABLE DEPICTIONS WITH INTEGRITY TO SUBJECT • TO EMBRACE THE MAKING PROCESS AS A MEANS OF DISCOVERY AND UNDERSTANDING • TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO CREATE IN NEW WAYS • TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND WORK BOTH WITH AND PAST CLICHÉ • TO REFINE AND MODIFY WORK TO FIT WITHIN SET PARAMETERS THE OBJECT I CHOSE TO ITERATE WAS A BANANA. WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT A BANANA THROUGH MY OBJECT IS THE EXTREMELY SPECIFIC SHAPE IT HAS. THE PRESENTATION OF MY OBJECTS MADE ME MORE AWARE OF HOW EACH ITERATION WAS RELATED TO EACH OTHER. IT WAS ACTUALLY QUITE DIFFICULT FINDING A GRID ARRANGEMENT THAT COMPLIMENTED EACH OBJECT AND MADE SENSE. THE MOST CHALLENGING MEDIA FOR ME WAS PAINT. I REALLY ENJOY PAINTING BUT IT WAS DIFFICULT IMITATING ALEX KATZ’S TECHNIQUE/LOOK. THE MOST ENJOYABLE MEDIA WAS ILLUSTRATOR. I REALLY ENJOY USING ILLUSTRATOR/ PHOTOSHOP/ OTHER COMPUTER PROGRAMS. I DIDN’T REALLY LEARN ANYTHING NEW IN PHOTOSHOP DURING THIS PROJECT BUT THIS PROJECT BROUGHT UP HOW GOOD IT IS TO USE PHOTOSHOP ON THE BACKGROUND OF POORLY SCANNED IMAGES. IF I HAD A WHILE LONGER TO WORK ON THIS OBJECT I WOULD PROBABLY PLAY AROUND WITH PHOTOGRAPHY OF BANANAS. I WOULD EDIT THE IMAGES TO MAKE THEM LOOK ABNORMAL OR SIMPLIFIED. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO WORK WITH 3D ITERATIONS OF THE BANANA. I HAVEN’T WORKED MUCH WITH MAKING SCULPTURES SO I THINK IT WOULD BE FUN TO TRY!

WHAT DREW ME TO PICK PAULA SCHER WAS THE WAY SHE PLAYED WITH TEXT. I LOVE ALL THINGS TYPOGRAPHY ORIENTED SO HER COUNTLESS POSTERS FOR THE NEW YORK PUBLIC THEATER AND COUNTLESS LOGOS INTRIGUED ME. WHAT INSPIRED ME ABOUT PAULA SCHER WAS THE WIDE VARIETIES OF PROJECTS SHE HAS ABLE TO WORK ON THROUGHOUT HER CAREER. FROM MAKING ALBUM COVERS AND POSTERS, TO LOGOS, SHE HAS ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH THROUGHOUT HER CAREER SO FAR. OTHER THING I FOUND INTERESTING ABOUT SCHER WAS HOW MUCH HER WORK CAN VARY. YES, SHE DOES HAVE A CERTAIN STYLE BUT SO MUCH OF HER WORK VARIES FROM ONE PIECE TO THE NEXT. SHE HAS SUCH A CREATIVE MIND AND MAKES SO MANY BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF WORK! I HAVE DONE QUITE A LOT OF PUBLIC SPEAKING IN MY LIFE SO I WAS VERY COMFORTABLE TALKING IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. I ENJOYED SHARING THE INFORMATION I HAD FOUND ON PAULA SCHER AND I REALLY ENJOYED DISCOVERING NEW DESIGNERS FROM MY CLASSMATES! ONE THING I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY IS PRACTICE WHAT I WOULD SAY A BIT MORE TO MAKE SURE I AM ABLE TO FIT ALL I NEED TO SAY IN A 20 SECOND TIME SLOT. ANOTHER INTERESTING DESIGNER THAT I LEARNED ABOUT THROUGH THESE PRESENTATIONS WAS MAIRA KALMAN. I REALLY LOVED KALMAN’S STYLE AND I ACTUALLY WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE BOOK BELOVED DOG. I THINK THESE PRESENTATIONS WERE A GREAT WAY TO LEARN ABOUT INFLUENTIAL DESIGNERS THAT CAN INSPIRE US.

OBJECTIVES: • GAIN EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CLIENTS IN A PROFESSIONAL DESIGN SETTING • CREATE COHESIVE AND VISUALLY-STRIKING IMAGES IN RESPONSE TO THE CONTENT OF THE TEXT AND ART DIRECTION FROM THE CLIENT • TYPESET THE STORY DYNAMICALLY AND IN SUPPORT OF THE CONTENT AND CONTEXT • PRODUCE A PRINTED BOOKLET OF YOUR COLLABORATIVE CHILDREN’S BOOK WHAT SURPRISED ME ABOUT WORKING WITH A PARTNER WAS HOW WELL WE WORKED TOGETHER. THE AUTHOR I WORKED WITH WAS REALLY LAID BACK ABOUT THE CRITERIA FOR MY ILLUSTRATIONS BUT GAVE SOME GREAT INSIGHT ON HER DECISIONS. MY PARTNERS LACK OF FEEDBACK ALLOWED ME TO RESORT TO OTHER STUDENTS TO SEE IF THE ILLUSTRATIONS WORKED WITH THE TEXT. THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS PROJECT WAS SPREADING OUT MY WORK TIME. THIS WAS A VERY TIMEINTENSIVE PROJECT AND IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO TRY TO PLAN TIME TO WORK ON IT FAR IN ADVANCE BECAUSE I HAD OTHER PROJECTS TO DO IN THE SAME CLASS. IF I WERE TO DO THIS PROJECT AGAIN I WOULD TRY WORKING WITH A DIFFERENT MEDIA SUCH AS PAINT OR PENCIL TO ILLUSTRATE. RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO I DECIDED I WOULD USE ILLUSTRATOR FOR THIS PROJECT BUT I WISH I WOULD HAVE TRIED OTHER MEDIAS BEFOREHAND. SOME OF MY INSPIRATION FOR THIS PROJECT CAME FROM LOOKING AT PREVIOUS STUDENTS’ CHILDREN’S BOOKS.
