The Single Artist Museum is a building located in New York City’s Chelsea art district, which is dedicated to displaying the work of artist Kate Gilmore. Based on information from the site and artist, a rule set based on spatial enclosure has been placed to dictate programmatic locations. The most basic observation of Gilmore’s videos is that they create light and sound, as well as the need to be secluded from all exterior distractions. ‘Absence of light’ became the underlying concept of the building and created separation of enclosure. Museum galleries are closed and dark, while circulation and interstitial spaces are exposed to light. Site context and climate dictate room locations and construction details.

MEET KATE GILMORE. Gilmore is a performance artist, in both videos and live performances. She dresses in heals, dresses, and other typical housewife attire, as she tackles harsh obstacles that she has constructed for herself. From escaping from a leg cast in concrete, to climbing a wall wearing roller skates, to popping balloons filled with paint, Gilmore makes a feminine statement that is difficult to ignore.

CHURCH ST. MARY’S KANSAS
PROGRAMS REVIT PHOTOSHOP
St. Mary’s Academy and College is a Catholic school that has been without a chapel for over 30 years. This project seeks to find a contemporary alternative design to the traditional Gothic style church that is currently planned for the site. Two goals lead the design: creating a procession of sacred spaces and incorporating site context. Within the building, room location is based primarily on the existing site conditions: typography, use patterns, and climate. The major circulation path within the building is an extension of the existing axis starting at the entry to the campus. The landscape gradually leads visitors up along a rising modular system. The Chapel continues this lifting into the grand assembly hall where views are directed upwards and light floods the chapel.
ACADEMIC WORK
THE SITE. After a devastating fire that destroyed the St. Mary’s Chapel, this school for high-schoolers and college age students has been without his central element. The site is in the middle of the campus, connecting dormitories and classrooms. It is on access with the main point of entry to the Academy, and has a subtle slope.

WINNING ENTRY - TO BE BUILT
This project is the winning competition entry for a life skills training home for mentally and physically disabled young adults. The upstairs is used to accommodate a supervised learning environment for the Transitions Program students and a separate basement houses extra classrooms to be used by the Flint Hills Technical College, who will be constructing the house. The house will be constructed by the FHTC beginning construction class skills, and will be one of the first examples of net-zero, sustainable practices in the area.

PROGRAM REVIT
Crown Hall is one of Mies van der Rohe’s greatest masterpieces, and currently houses the majority of the Architecture school at ITT. The goal of this design was to condense all of the ITT Architecture program, which is currently spread across campus, within Crown Hall and the Addition. The studios are the most celebrated piece of the Architecture school itself, and thus were left to remain within the celebrated Crown Hall. All other support spaces would be in the Addition. Circulation paths, determined by flow through campus, divide the Addition into (4) sections. These series of formal elements hold the secondary spaces. Initial sketch ideas

The design of the new Whole Foods Market at Exton Square will reflect the active and family orientated lifestyle of Chester County and positions this gourmet grocery market as a one-of-a-kind destination. The architectural language will evoke a modern interpretation of the strong vernacular building history of the surrounding region both referencing and reinforcing the themes of the Whole Foods Market – local’s favorite for simple, smart, and fresh. The design is all about the experience. The new grocery store will provide comfortable places to gather including a rooftop patio and garden with several shaded, ground-level meeting places, and pedestrian connections to the adjacent Mall.
