COLLEGE GATE Davey & Smith Architects

The brief called for an extension that would allow for a light filled generous living space on a restricted and narrow site. The ground floor spaces have been reconfigured to accommodate a new toilet and utility room within the existing structure of the house. The rear and side wall have been broken through to connect a new kitchen/ living/dining space. The new ope in the side wall allows for a large window flooding the kitchen with light from the East. The existing ceiling height has been retained and extended for continuity. The ceiling height increases to the rear over the new living/dining space with a new skylight to the West. Large sliding doors open to the garden to the South. The roof extends creating an overhang which provides shelter and shade as well as accommodating an outdoor storage area.

CLONTARF ROAD Davey & Smith Architects

This existing sea front property in Clontarf took little advantage of its location and oriantation. The brief required a complete fefurbishment and a new rear extension to accomodate the client’s expanding family. On the ground floor the existing garage has been converted and incorporated into the rest of the building volume and a generous kitchen/ dining/living room extension extends to the rear taking advantage of the garden views. A more private living room and playroom are situated to the seafront as well as a reading/viewing spot on the first floor. The attic conversion is provided with uninterupted views across the bay. To decrease the impact of such a large extension the volume has been divided into its component parts and is advantangeously stepped according to function, light and orientation.

SANDYFORD CAFE Davey & Smith Architects

The brief required a suitable layout redesign to an existing cafe unit in Sandyford on a tight budget. Due to the restricted size and shape of the cafe the counter was designed to be as compact and efficient as possible. The result allows for more service and seating area to the front of the cafe. The seating area runs the full length of the unit taking light and views from both the public square to the front to the carpark to the rear. This seating encompasses both fixed bespoke timber benches as well as salvaged chairs and tables providing a relaxed atmosphere. For aesthetics and economy the cafe was finished using a palette of simple materials, reclaimed oak boards for the counter and fixed seating, timber laminate flooring and the units bare walls decorated with recycled shelving units.

FITZWILLIAM SQUARE Architecture Republic

It is proposed that two adjoining Georgian houses on Fitzwilliam Square, currently used as offices, be restored and converted into a series of 7 residential apartments as well as carrying out a refurbishment on the exiting residence located in the basement of no.23. The entrance to the units will be maintained from Fitzwilliam square, basement apartments being acessed by a direct external stair. Generous living areas are arranged to take advantage of views across the square with bedrooms located to the rear. overlooking a communal garden. The main concerns of the project were providing disabled access as well as creating exterior areas throughout the development. These have been resolved by the addition of an elevator as well as the provision of communal winter gardens and a roof terrace off the landings of the main staircase.

SHELBOURNE HOUSE Architecture Republic

The client requested a two story rear extension to accomodate a new enlarged kitchen/dining area with a generously proportioned master bedroom and dressing suite. The existing ground floor extension is to be demolished and the new footprint of the building to be extended to the site boundaries. The new kitchen/dining will incorporate a store and utility room as well as a fully glazed rear facade to the garden. Interior planting beneath a large linear skylight will effectively establish a link between the interior and exterior spaces. The existing living area has aslo been redesigned to provide a more intimate family space while maintaining a connection to the new extension. The first floor of the new build will accomodate a private master bedroom with dressing area and ensuite.

RIAI SCHOOL COMPETITION Architecture Republic

The RIAI held a competition to design an Irish secondary school with a strict programmatic layout and budget located in Tallaght. The concept of a dense and economical scheme was developed in line with the requirements for well-lit space. We proposed a two storey complex with the accommodation arranged in section; the classrooms on the first floor where it is quietest and well lit and the more specific parts of the brief located on the ground floor. The building is punctured by a series of top-lit courtyards and atria each with different proportions and character providing multiple opportunities for social interaction. Collectively the atria, courtyards and first floor terraces provide vibrant spaces for break-out curricular and extra-curricular activities, circulation and exhibition. It is suitable for reproduction on other sites. of similar size with minimal alteration.

SEVILLE APARTMENTS Eddea Arquitectos

The East of Seville is currently being developed as a new residential region for the city. The client requested a design for a new urban housing block for 2,000 inhabitants. The project called for a reinterpretion of the traditional Sevillian apartment block. The proposal consists of four seperate residential towers arranged around a raised platform. The platform accomodates an underground carpark as well as providing a green space with amenities for the residents. The ground floor of the towers accomodate commercial businesses. The towers stand at varying heights according to orientation to ensure the provision of adequate light and shading. The apartments are interspersed with triple height balcony areas creating vertical social spaces throughout the blocks allowing opportunities for interaction between the residents.

DANCE SCHOOL, DUBLIN Thesis Project Tutors: Mary Laheen & Aoibheann Ni Mhearain

My intention for this thesis project was to examine how the movement and trajectory of a body through space can create areas of connectivity, changing perspectives and fluidity of motion. I chose a derelict city centre site adjacent to NCAD and between two socially disconnected areas of the city, the social housing of the Oliver Bond Street apartments and the long established Dublin community of the Liberties. I thought of the dance school as a campus in itself, a small part of the city. A public realm of movement and connectivity on the ground level retains visual connections with the private realm of dancers above. The programme is organised to encourage movement onto and through the site. Semi public spaces nestle between the

INN FOR CASHEL Fifth Year Project Tutor: Peter Cody

The historically significant town of Cashel required accomodation to encourage tourists to prolong their visit. Focusing on four of the prominent historical sites in Cashel I orientated the building to take full advantage of these views. The high towers of the sleeping quarters reference old tower houses while creating connections to these sites. The groundscape of the inn is thought of as landscape in itself. A continuation of the landscape of Cashel. This organic experience of route and journey lies in contrast to the strict geometric forms of the accomodation above. This groundscape extends across the site moving seemlessly from exterior to interior. Interior spaces house the communal functions of dining, living and exhibition. The tall towers above create intimate private spaces directing occupants views across the town and standing as a beacon to the weary traveller.

PUBLIC HOUSE, DUBLIN Fourth Year Project Tutor: Tom de Paor

The site for this building is in the medieval heart of Dublin. From examining historical maps of the area I became intrigued by the network of lanes and alleyways which ran through the urban fabric. These were spaces where people met and social interaction occurred. I decided to recreate these across the site with the public house between them. I was interested in creating a journey of sensations through my building design. The effect of moving through these high walled alleyways stood in contrast to moving through the spacious areas of the building. Access to the “alleyways was from staircases internalised in the thickness of the structure. By moving across the depth of the plan the light constantly changes, from the light in the alleyways to the shadows of the interior spaces. The change of height, level and spaces of the building were further enhanced by the change of concrete aggregate.
