The Tenenbaum Hotel is a destination of its own including multiple amenities that individually tell the unique stories within Wes Anderson’s collection of films. Mise en abyme is the double mirroring effect created by placing a story within a story. This phenomenon is captured throughout his filmography and drives the design to contain depth and layers. His iconic style, movie stills, and color palettes are the driving force behind the design.

The lobby’s architectural elements are influenced by Wes Anderson’s use of mise en abyme, creating a visual story within a story told through the layering of arches.

Mr. Fox uses chute three to sneak into Farmer Bean's dark cellar with dim lights that illuminate thousands of bottles of the beloved golden cider. The warm, amber tones are pulled from the cider cellar's atmosphere using a reflective ceiling to carry this ambiance further.

"The Crossed Key Society", which honors the kinship between characters in The Grand Budapest Hotel inspires the branding. These relationships are often saved (literally) and brought closer through the delicate disguise that Mendl's Bakery provides them through their misadventures. The design is inspired by the romanticism of previous eras along with the dainty cover that the bakery eludes.

The guest rooms are reminiscent of the lobby's monumental design, while tying in a layer more personal to Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. "Boy with Apple" is a priceless painting at the center of the film's misadventures. It serves to symbolize the main character himself; the boy represents his yearning to remain youthful, and the apple represents his desires and artistic refinement. Opulent shades of red and green are extracted from this painting to subtly contrast the pink.

The Lofts within The Tenenbaum are inspired by the importance of adventure that Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom displays. Nature is a common theme throughout this film, as that is the characters' escape. The Lofts pull these natural tones and textures inspired by their adventure into the wilderness. Keeping the natural tones allows for tenants to add their own personality to the space.

Rooftop Bar & Sushi

Japanese influence is pulled from Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs. In the film, a small pug named Oracle has gained the trust of her fellow pups through her ability to see the future—an ability that, unbeknownst to the other dogs, stems entirely from the fact she knows how to watch television. A mural of all characters within the film is painted on an inset semi circle behind the bar. A reflective ceiling gives the illusion of a full circle.

Rooftop Bar & Sushi

The indoor portion of the rooftop provides a bar and a separate sushi bar with ample amounts of seating for each experience. The enclosed portion keeps guests protected from any unlikely weather without sacrificing the views and experience of being on a rooftop. This is achieved through surrounding windows and glass domes. Biophillic design is incorporated through natural textures, materials, plants, and lighting to blur the line between nature and the built environment.

140 North Sharp Avenue

the history & significance.

Due to a number of fires in the early 1900s whatever original building might have been there was replaced. Around 1909, C.R. Smith, a local businessman, banker and insurance agent, built the building now located at 140 North Sharpe Avenue. This building once housed one of the largest department stores in Mississippi, and C.R. Smith bragged that is was the only “3 Story” building in the Delta despite only having two functioning storys. The building has survived with integrity to this day and is a contributing element in the Downtown Cleveland Historic District.

the concept.

Considering Cleveland's status as a hub for artists in the delta, and its proximity to Delta State, these apartments draw in artists from all walks of life who need space to live and work. The original materials will be preserved and exposed to keep the building's history intact, while providing a raw canvas for the artists to bring their work to life. The development will be called Omnific, as it is defined as “all-creating.”

overall visual aspects. visual character:

• Commercial building in downtown historic Cleveland, surrounded by other buildings. Brick masonry building with symmetrical plan and parapeted walls.

• 2.5 stories with a flat roof.

Letters “C. R. Smith” located centrally near the cornice recessed to the first story.

• A corbeled band of brick divides the cornice from the eight window openings.

• Windows have voussoirs with keystones and masonry sills that run the length of the window strings.

• Windows are currently shuttered but historically were double hung. Wide masonry entablature divides the second and first story with ornamental masonry brackets at each end.

New awning and signage added to the façade of the structure on bottom retail portion of building.

• Front stone masonry showing signs of aging becoming grayed from

• On the side and back remain a bright orange.

Decorative features such brackets, masonry entablature, band brick in great condition of aging.

• Voussoirs with keystones all intact with minimal New awning and signs distract from the more structure.

signs added to building more historical elements of the back of building. and wires, graffiti-ed brick, staining present across the sides

visual character: interior.

• The central hallway is the character-defining interior space.

This wide corridor and the small secondary corridors are unique to the building.

• The large room that widens off the main hall appears to be an original space.

• While no longer visible from the outside, the windows that face the main street have leaded glass transoms over the double-hung windows and painted signs.

• There is an interior wall of privacy glass, some with office names still visible.

• There is an alcove that was initially part of a dentist’s office.

The character-defining materials in this building are dark stained wood wainscotting, plaster walls, wooden trim around doors and windows, wooden floors throughout, and glass office fronts.

looking stone lantern

the prompt.

Construct a lamp from recycled materials and wiring the concept.

Rumor has it that one can see the Kingdom of Fae when squinting one eye and peering through hole of a hag stone. These holes are created naturally through erosion, which gives them their place in folklore as a “looking stone” into other realms. The lantern projects organic silhouettes onto nearby surfaces to blur the lines between the Kingdom of Fae and reality. The stones are placed to emphasize the negative space within. A flat, square base allowed for each stone’s texture and shape to be glorified.

materials & process.

My father and I have hunted and collected hag stones all across Mississippi for years. An old glass terrarium is used for each stone to be strategically placed and adhered. The base is constructed using scrap wood and trim.

• Lamping used: LED B10 - 240 lumens, 4 watts, 2700 K, 90 CRI, 120 Volt

bo(vi)ne stool

the prompt.

Construct a chair from 100% recycled materials that is durable and functional for use

the concept.

Bovine is a term used to describe characteristics of cows. The 'vi' doubles as the roman numeral 6 which represents the amount of bones used to construct the stool. Extend life cycle of materials

• Design around the organic shape of bones

• Utilize materials that enhance the durability of bone

materials & process.

Decades old, naturally stripped cow bones are obtained, bleached, sun dried, and finished with a sealant. The leg bones are sawed flat for stability at the base. Scrap wood is drilled into the top of the bone to form a seat which is then filled with pillow fluff and is upholstered with leftover fabric. Jaw bones are drilled into either side of the wooden base for support.
