WELCOME, FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, to the 4th Annual “Slice of the Good Life” Pizza Klatch Gayla! This event is a celebration of the progress we have made toward creating safe and supportive school and community spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in Thurston County schools. Even more, it is a recognition of the work we still need to do. Every day, students go to school or live in a place with the fear that they will be bullied, harassed, or physically harmed because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Every student has the right to attend school and live in their home and community without fear. Therefore, our work before and after tonight is critical to the social, emotional, and physical health of LGBTQ+ youth. None of it can be done without your support. Thank you to our staff, volunteers, and supporters for continuing to promote the mission, vision, and core values of Pizza Klatch. We are so appreciative of our group facilitators, board members, grantors, and sponsors who contribute to the success of this exceptional and impactful organization. Tonight we come together as a community to connect, share stories, and enjoy this wonderful celebration, as well as to step up to do more to strengthen the cause. We are grateful for your presence here tonight and thank you deeply for your commitment to this critical work!

Additionally, he is building broad coalitions that are working to close opportunity gaps through critical policy and budget changes.

SYDNIE WILLIS

I’m really excited, this is going to be my first Gayla! I am Agender, Panromantic and currently a Junior at BHHS . I always look forward to PK, lunch without it always seems boring. Being in this community has brought a lot of opportunities and new friends to my door.

MARY LAMBERT Mary Lambert isn’t your typical pop artist. Inspired by confessional folk singers as well as spoken-word performers, she is a brutally candid writer who deals directly in her art with her past traumas. Lambert was raised in an abusive home, attempted suicide at 17, turned to drugs and alcohol before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and survived multiple sexual assaults throughout her childhood. With that list of horrors, you wouldn’t expect Mary to be disarmingly joyful, but she charms effortlessly, and the effect on her audience is bewitching. She describes her performances as “safe spaces where crying is encouraged; My entire prerogative is about connection, about being present, and facilitating true catharsis. Also, fart jokes.”

Mary wrote the chorus to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ triple-platinum hit “Same Love,” which Lambert wrote from her vantage point of being both a Christian and a lesbian. Writing and singing the hook led to two Grammy nominations for “Song Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year”, as well as the iconic performance alongside pop legend Madonna at the 2014 Grammys.

Special Thanks To the Gayla interns and Work Study Student this year. Jay Chierotti, Luca Day and Melissa Rosscup, you really stepped up to the plate and were fabulous to work with. A huge shout out to Teresa Guajardo who back in 2007 was our first facilitator. She got the ball rolling for us. Teresa went on to open the Rainbow Health Center, which provides services for everyone, with special emphasis on transgender folks; new immigrant families; and unaccompanied refugee minors. Teresa, we love you! Thank you to the volunteers who keep giving hours and hours to Pizza Klatch year after year. The five mentioned below have served (and 3 continue to serve) as board members. Cam and Luke also were, and still are, two of our earliest facilitators. Kathryn (Doodle) besides throwing her all in when she was President, now steps in wherever and whenever she is needed in whatever capacity. Steven Drew, also past President, continues to connect us to so many incredible people that we otherwise would never had gotten to known. Marissa, who we get as President of the Board for just a few more months, stepped in during a time of major transition and her strong leadership, openness and exquisite organizational skills kept Pizza Klatch stable while we went through staffing transitions. We then won the jackpot with our ED, Rosalinda Noriega and our Program Manager Brett Rader. A huge thank you Cameron Combs, Steve Drew, Luke Miller, Marissa Rathbone and Kathryn Kravit Smith. And special mention to Bitsy Bidwell, who two years in a row has stepped in with our auction to put vast numbers of donations online. Thank you to Rachel da Silva and Linda Malanchuk-Finnan who each year walk the streets of Olympia, bringing in wonderful donations from our generous local businesses. And I am wildly grateful to Sarah Nopp, graphic artist extraordinaire, who did ALL the graphics for us this year. And she did it with humor, confidence, professionalism and pure delight. It takes a village, and Pizza Klatch has that in spades. Thank you to ALL the volunteers who make the Gayla happen. Thank you facilitators who are so committed to providing a safe and open space for our Pizza Klatch youth. The PK youth for your bravery to be yourselves and to attend the groups. And to you who have attended this show. You let LGBTQ+ youth and their allies know, through being here, and through your donations, that they count. They are important and wanted. Thank you! Pizza Klatch: Helps overcome issues/stress. You will not be judged for who you are. Free to be yourself. The reason I haven’t starved to death. I love P.K. - Kaytlyn My son came home after a tough day at school. He said that the Pizza Klatch was the only good thing about the day. We are so grateful that your organization is there to provide a safe place for my son. - Karyl, mother of a Capital HS Student

I have been so grateful for the Pizza Klatch support groups here at River Ridge. I have heard so many positive comments regarding the connection, support, education, and fun involved for students each Thursday at lunch. I am also so glad that students are having the opportunity to hear guest speakers from the community and are becoming familiar with resources that are available to them. I don’t think we can ever really know how huge of an impact this is making for students who otherwise might feel alienated or ostracized. Thank you to Pizza Klatch for your meaningful work! - River Ridge HS Counselor

My client was on the massage table and started talking about how her niece had hated school and felt completely isolated. But this year a new group started up in her school and it has changed her life. She now feels like she fits in and no longer feels marginalized. I asked her if the name of the group was Pizza Klatch. She said “yes, that’s it!” - Denali, a PK facilitator I go to PK because I won’t be judged. And I know that no one will be scared of me… ...just because I like girls. - Tumwater HS PK Group Member

What does Pizza Klatch mean to me? It’s a place where I can unwind, share experiences, and eat pizza. When I have something to say people actually listen! It makes me feel needed, and it’s an enjoyable experince.” - Greg

I love Pizza Klatch. Everyone is always so welcoming and I never feel like I am going to be judged. It’s a great environment and a safe place. - Jade Hall
