GLUTEN FREE & DAIRY FREE GUIDE TO WALT DISNEY WORLD CREATED BY SARAH NORRIS FROM GLUTEN FREE & DAIRY FREE AT WDW

“TO ALL WHO COME TO THIS HAPPY PLACE... WELCOME!”

This is what Walt Disney said on the grand opening of Disneyland in 1955. His vision? A place where children, families, and friends could come together to enjoy rides and park activities. And this vision still holds true today. As guests with special dietary needs, Walt Disney World is one of the most amazing (and, some might say, “Magical”) places to visit and dine safely. I know this myself firsthand. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and later Celiac Disease. As a result, I had several special dietary needs to consider, including a strictly gluten free diet and a dairy free diet too. With a Disney trip already planned for that year, I wasn’t sure that I would be able to safely eat on vacation. But, eat I did! I quickly discovered that Walt Disney World is truly the “Most Magical Place on Earth” for guests with special dietary needs. In Fall 2009, I created Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW, a website dedicated to sharing information about visiting Disney World with a special dietary need. Now, I’m sharing with you this guide to help you on your next visit to Disney World. It will help you get an understanding of what you can expect if you visit the Disney Parks & Resorts in 2020. We’ll highlight the basics of visiting Disney World for the first time with a special dietary need, and we’ll take a look at the dining mustdo’s for the year, along with my best bets for gluten free and dairy free dining experiences in the parks and resorts. This guide is the perfect starting point for anyone with a special dietary need visiting Disney World. And, no matter what you’re dietary need is, you’re bound to find a few good tips here too. So, let’s dig in! And, a word of warning. You WILL be hungry by the time you finish this guide!

Disney Trivia: Did you know? The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is known as The Most Magical Place on Earth, while Disneyland is known as the Happiest Place on Earth.

THE BASICS The Walt Disney World Resort offers a variety of dining options for guests with special dietary needs, but there can be a lot to remember before and during your trip. This section provides information along with tips and tools that you can use to help navigate and plan your trip with a special dietary need.

DISNEY’S SPECIAL DIETS DEPARTMENT

Did you know that The Walt Disney World Resort has an entire department dedicated to special dietary needs? This department, known as Disney’s Special Diets Department, is your go-to source for pre-trip questions, information, and even special requests* Disney’s Special Diets Department recommends that guests contact them after they have booked their dining arrangements for table service locations and special event experiences and at least 14 days prior to their Walt Disney World vacation. Links and information for Disney’s Special Diets Department can be found in the Resources & Links chapter. *Special requests are subject to availability and are not guaranteed.

7

WHAT DOES DISNEY OFFER FOR SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS GUESTS?

If you have a special dietary need and are visiting The Walt Disney World Resort, what can you expect when dining at quick service, table service, snack kiosks, and other dining establishments? Disney offers a variety of options for guests with various special dietary needs. The Walt Disney World Resort even carries select special dietary needs products provided by vendors to serve guests with specific needs including gluten free, vegan, and allergy-friendly breads, snacks, and more.* The Walt Disney World Resort also provides guests with allergy-friendly, vegan, and vegetarian menus at select Disney dining locations. These menus are subject to change, and they are not currently listed on The Walt Disney World Resort website at the time of publication; but, you can find many of the special dietary needs menus on the Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW website:

at a quick service or table service location. Guests may ask their server or another Disney cast member at a Disney dining location about this. At certain locations, like most quick service restaurants, a Disney culinary team manager will assist guests with special dietary needs requests instead of a chef. Guests dining at table service restaurants will typically speak directly with a chef. For all guests with special dietary needs, it is recommended that you notify a Disney cast member upon arriving at any dining location to discuss special dietary needs options. *For a current list of special dietary needs vendor supplied product offerings for your dietary need, it is recommended that you contact the Disney Special Diets Department.

https://www.glutenfreedairyfreewdw.com/menus/ Currently, there are no special dietary needs menus for certain special dietary needs, such as low-fat, low-sodium, and no-sugar added; however, Disney’s culinary team can easily assist guests with any dining requests even if there is not a menu available for a specific dietary need. Guests with any special dietary need can speak directly with a member of the Disney culinary team at any time during their dining experiences 8

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ALLERGY SAFETY & CROSSCONTAMINATION

If you are a guest with food allergies, Celiac Disease, or have any concerns about cross-contamination, please note that The Walt Disney World Resort does not have separate kitchens to prepare gluten-free or allergy-friendly food. They also do not have a separate dining area for guests with these special dietary needs. Often a particular restaurant will have a dedicated gluten-free or allergy-friendly fryer or prepare food in a specific section of a restaurant’s kitchen, but it is best to confirm any food preparation concerns or needs prior to consuming any food. Disney’s Special Diets Department indicates that The Walt Disney World Resort cannot guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur during the preparation or handling of special diet needs meals. This may not sound very encouraging if you’re a first-time visitor to The Disney Parks & Resorts with a special dietary need. But, Disney takes special dietary needs very seriously and leads the culinary industry in food allergy and special diets safety, preparation, and handling. If at any you have questions or concerns, a Disney manager or chef is on hand to discuss them with you. Now, let’s take a look at how Disney actually handles guests dining with a special dietary need. 9

THREE BRIDGES BAR & GRILL /

DISNEY’S CORONADO SPRINGS

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ALLERGY SAFETY & CROSSCONTAMINATION The Walt Disney World Resort offers guests with special dietary needs select offerings from designated allergy-friendly fryers. For those guests who may be concerned with the safety of these fryers, Disney’s Special Diets Department notes the following protocols as of May 2019: All locations at Walt Disney World Resort follow procedures to provide allergy-friendly meals for our Guests. Our fryers reserved for allergyfriendly meals are cleaned daily and refilled with fresh oil. Some locations have fryers with self-contained filtering mechanisms. In these cases, the allergy-friendly fryer is cleaned separately and refilled with fresh oil. Some locations with multiple fryers—one of which is reserved for allergy-friendly orders —may require a portable filtering machine. In these locations, filtered oil is only used to top off the non-allergy specific fryers. New oil is always used in the clean allergy-friendly specific fryer.

DISNEY DINING PROTOCOLS The Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts offers a variety of dining experiences, including snack kiosks with grab-and-go options, quick service restaurants offering casual and “fast food style meals, and table service dining locations with standard sit-down fare. With so many options, it can be tough to know what protocols are in place at each of these dining locations. Here is a brief overview of the general protocol and/or resources for special dietary needs at each of these locations.

DISNEY DINING LOCATION PROTOCOLS

*Please Note: Disney dining practices, procedures, and protocols are subject to change. This section is a guideline for standard protocols at the time of publication but does not guarantee that each dining location visited will follow these protocols exactly as noted in this book. For the most current information, contact Disney’s Special Diets Department.

Snack Carts / Kiosks Found throughout the Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts, snack carts and food kiosks often serve snack-type foods that include classic Disney favorites like popcorn, chips, turkey legs, and Mickey bars. Because these are small carts and kiosks, no Disney manager or chef will typically be on hand to discuss special dietary needs options. Most cast members staffing these carts and kiosks are not trained in handling special dietary needs in-depth like managers and chefs are. If you are interested in a snack or food item at a Disney snack cart or kiosk, ask a cast member for the Allergy Ingredients Binder. This binder will list the ingredients and allergens (if applicable) for all items served at the snack cart or kiosk.

Quick Service Dining Locations If you’re looking for a quick fast-food style meal while at the Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts, quick service dining locations are the perfect way to satisfy your taste buds. Quick service dining locations offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner options and can be found throughout the Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts (*Locations and offerings are subject to change). Unlike Disney snack carts and kiosks, special dietary needs trained managers, and in some locations chefs, are on-hand to assist you with your meal options. When you arrive at a quick service dining location, it is recommended that you alert the cast member at the cash register of your special dietary needs prior to ordering any food. In some cases, the cast member at the cash register will hand you an allergy-friendly menu, which covers the top 8 common allergens (gluten/wheat, egg, milk, fish/shellfish, peanut/tree nut, and soy). At this time, you may also speak to a manager or chef, who will discuss options available to you at the dining location. If your special dietary needs are not covered on the allergy-friendly menu or you wish to discuss safety, including crosscontamination procedures, it is recommended that you always speak with a manager or chef prior to ordering. 13

For those guests who choose to order special dietary needs options without consulting with a manager or chef, their order will still be flagged as a special dietary need and be prepared by a manager or chef in a designated area of the kitchen and/or in cleaned equipment (depending on the kitchen’s set-up). All special dietary needs options, regardless of manager or chef consultations, will be prepared in the same way; however, speaking with a manager or chef may allow for customization of meals in some instances (*and, if applicable). In addition, this gives guests with special dietary needs the opportunity to discuss their needs with a trained cast member.

guests and cast members differentiate special dietary needs meals. *Please note: The Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts quick service dining locations may have limited options and will be unable to create extensive customized meal options or make dishes for which the kitchen does not currently carry ingredients for. Some locations may not be able to provide special dietary needs guests with options due to limited availability.

Special dietary needs quick service meals are typically served on trays with a different color than the non-special dietary needs meals to help 14

Table Service Dining Locations If sitting down at a full-service dining location is more your speed, table service restaurants at the Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts offer the best variety and customization for guests with special dietary needs. Guests dining at table service dining locations can note their special dietary needs prior to their vacation and meal by adding them as as a note when making their Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR). In addition, guests may contact the Disney Special Diets Department at least 14 days in advance of their vacation and notify them of their dining reservations and special dietary needs too.

Contacting the Disney Special Diets Department in advance can help ensure that table service dining locations are aware of a guest’s special dietary needs, and, in some cases, may also assist the kitchen in stocking select special dietary needs products (such as gluten-free buns, etc.) Upon arrival at any table service restaurant, guests will typically be presented with an allergyfriendly menu (if applicable and available). Like quick service dining locations, guests always have the option to order directly from the allergyfriendly menu or to consult with a chef prior to ordering. It is recommended that guests consult with a chef to discuss any special dietary needs and/or concerns with cross-contamination.

NON-DISNEY OWNED DINING LOCATIONS

Though the majority of the dining locations at the Walt Disney World Parks & Resort are owned and operated by the Disney Company, there are some locations that are not. Companies, such as Landry’s, Levy, and the Patina Restaurant Group, lease restaurant space from Disney in a variety of locations, like Epcot’s World Showcase and Disney Springs.

Boardwalk Resort • Ample Hills Creamery (Snacks) • Big River Grill and Brewing Works (TS)

Coronado Springs Resort • Cafe Rix (QS)

This means that these locations may or may not adhere to the same special dietary needs protocols as the Disney owned locations. In most cases, these restaurants do not offer allergyfriendly menus. While most of these locations offer outstanding special dietary needs accommodations, it is important to know that these dining locations typically do not operate in the same way that Disney-owned restaurants do.

ONLINE ADVANCED DINING RESERVATIONS SPECIAL DIETARY REQUEST

Guests may make Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) 180 days before their vacation. During the reservation process, guests can indicate if they have a special dietary need. Noting a special dietary need is important because not only gives a Disney dining location and the chefs at that restaurant advance notice of your visit, but it also allows the host/hostess and server to best assist you during your dining experience.* *Please Note: Indicating your special dietary need on your ADR does not guarantee that a restaurant was properly notified or has special options available to you. Always ask to speak with a member of the Disney Culinary Team upon arriving at any Disney dining location. ADRs can be made online at: http://www.disneyworld.com, in person, or by telephone at: (407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463.

While allergy-friendly menus are available, they do not always reflect all of the special dietary needs options available at a dining location. Speaking with a manager or chef directly allows you the chance to discuss additional options and/or modifications, when available.

“Walt Disney World is the only place where we can eat safely at restaurants, without fear. Having that feeling for the first time was so amazing for our family.” - Elizabeth L.

“Disney is the ONLY place where we can eat at a restaurant safely. We do not eat out at home anymore and haven’t in over a year. I still get a bit nervous when we first eat out there that my daughter will get sick, but so far, they have been able to keep her safe. Can’t wait for our next trip and time off from cooking!” - Denine R.

“As a person with an anaphylactic dairy allergy, I can sit back and actually enjoy my meals as if I had carefully prepared it myself. I trust Disney World with my life and what a delicious life it is at Disney World!” - Erin LJ

“As a person with food allergies, the thing I love about eating at Disney is that their selections are as unique and magical as the parks/resorts themselves. I could go to a store and grab a quick gluten free cookie or brownie but how many places offer allergy friendly beignets or zebra domes?” - Austin M.

“The feeling of complete relief that this is one area of your trip home that you don’t need to concerned about. Any dietary restrictions are not looked at as an inconvenience but as the norm and accommodations are made without judgement or the feeling of being ‘different’ or difficult. Also the substitutions are gourmet and delicious and not just leaving off the cheese or, ‘We will just bring it without the bun.’ It is truly magical!” - Tom D.

“I love that they don’t look at me like I’m crazy, and they GET it! I have never been somewhere more accommodating than Disney World! That’s one of the main reasons I keep going back!!!” - Cindy B.

“It’s the place I always feel safe! And without the frequent compromises you get elsewhere...e.g. mash contains butter so we’ll serve with no potatoes, salad dressing contains milk so here’s a dry salad, sauce was cooked with cream so have plain meat. Instead, the chefs at Disney will try their hardest to give you a complete and tasty meal, replacing rather than omitting.” - Sarah C.

“I don’t like to be made a fuss over and hate bothering the chefs so I LOVE that a lot of the restaurants have menus that signify specific allergies. Even some of the buffets (Hollywood & Vine) have menus listed with what I can & can’t have and chef only comes out to ask me if I want Mickey waffles!” - Julie M.

“Disney is my family’s favorite vacation spot because it makes it so easy to eat fabulous food. We are truly a Disney family. My kids have taken their first steps at Magic Kingdom, and we had my daughter’s destination wedding there. Going so often and having several food allergies gives us an opportunity to try multiple dining experiences.” - Stacy K.

BOMA: FLAVORS OF AFRICA / DISNEY’S ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE

ALLERGY MICKEY WAFFLE INGREDIENTS

Allergy Mickey waffles are made using one of several popular gluten free and allergy-friendly mixes. Disney currently carries the following brand of special dietary needs mixes: • Bob’s Red Mill • Carbon’s Golden Malted • Cup4Cup • Namaste Mixes are typically combined with rice milk and canola oil, but some locations use additional ingredients, such as vanilla or honey in the batter. Some locations will also combine more than one mix to create a unique batter. The two most commonly used mixes at Disney World are Bob’s Red Mill and Namaste. However, in 2019, Disney World began using Carbon’s Golden Malted at more dining locations. Guests with special dietary needs should speak with a Disney culinary specialist to discuss ingredients and options.

ALLERGY CHICKEN TENDERS INGREDIENTS & PREPARATION

Allergy Chicken Tenders are typically fried in a dedicated allergy fryer or baked in an oven, depending on the location and the special dietary need. This will vary, and guests should ask a manager or chef to discuss the preparation process. For those guests who have soy allergies and/or intolerances, some locations may not be able to accommodate and provide a safe option due to soy-based oil used in fryers or a lack of an oven. The companies that supply Allergy Chicken Tenders to Disney World may vary and are subject to change. Two brands that you can currently find at Disney World are Ian’s and Chef’s Line. Ian’s brand allergy-friendly chicken tenders are currently the most commonly found brand on property, with the Chef’s Line brand being served at a few locations like Columbia Harbour House in the Magic Kingdom. If you have any questions about brands and/or ingredients, we recommend asking to speak with a Disney culinary specialist to discuss. At the time of publication, Disney World is currently serving Ian’s brand Allergy Chicken Tenders.

SARAH’S TOP 10 GLUTEN FREE & DAIRY FREE SNACKS AT WDW Snacks can be a challenge when you’re gluten free and dairy free. But, it doesn’t have to be one when you have some of these amazing options from my Top 10 List. These are some of my personal favorite snacks and the ones that look forward to eating again and again. These include items at Disney Resorts too along with my favorite theme park snacks.

#1 - DOLE WHIP

Location(s): • Aloha Isle - Magic Kingdom • Everything Pop Food Court - Pop Century Resort • Pineapple Lanai - Polynesian Village Resort • Refreshment Port - Epcot • Tamu Tamu - Animal Kingdom You can’t get any more unique and Disney-inspired than a Pineapple Dole Whip. This gluten free, dairy free, and even vegan soft serve can be found at several different locations at Disney World. But, I recommend getting one at Aloha Isle in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom. It’s the most classic way to enjoy this treat and the perfect spot to enjoy this refreshing snack in the parks.

68

#2 - FRESHLY POPPED POPCORN

Location(s): • Various Popcorn Carts at all Disney Theme Parks There’s nothing better than watching a parade or fireworks, or even strolling down Main Street U.S.A., with a bucket of freshly popped popcorn. Believe it or not, this popcorn is naturally gluten free, dairy free, and vegan -- though you’d swear it was loaded with butter. Thankfully, it’s a treat that everyone in the whole family can enjoy and is a must-do for any visit to Disney World.

69

#3 - ALLERGYFRIENDLY BEIGNETS

Location(s): • Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory - Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort You’ll feel like you’re in New Orleans when you enjoy allergyfriendly beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter Resort. Even if you’re not staying at this resort, it’s worth a visit to enjoy these deep-fried and powdered sugar covered pieces of dough. And, bonus, you can get these any time the restaurant is open. So, you can let the good times roll at breakfast, lunch, or dinner-time.

70

#4 - MAPLE POPCORN

Location(s): • Canada Pavilion Popcorn Cart - Epcot I love popcorn, and this version is one of my hands down favorites at Disney World. With the classic saltiness of popcorn and a hint of maple sweetness, it’s a great alternative to the traditional freshly popped popcorn. If you enjoy kettle corn or caramel corn, you’ll love the maple popcorn. At the time of publication, maple popcorn is currently being offered only at the Canada Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase, but it has been offered at the Frontierland Popcorn Cart in the Magic Kingdom in the past too. So, locations may vary.

Pro Tip: Get this popcorn when it’s freshly popped. It’s hot and slightly sticky, and oh, so delicious!

71

#5 - THE BAKERY SINK

Location(s): • Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC - Disney Springs Forget the Kitchen Sink at Beaches and Cream! It’s all about the Bakery Sink at Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC - a 100% gluten free, dairy free, and vegan bakery at Disney Springs. They have lots of baked goods, but the Bakery Sink is a favorite of Disney guests. It’s made with leftover baked goods like cupcakes, donuts, and filled with tons of frosting.

72

#6 - SNACKS WITH CHARACTER

Location(s): • Various Shops and Snack Kiosks at all Disney Theme Parks & Select Disney Resorts All snacks should have character, especially when they are allergy-friendly. Snacks with Character is a Disney branded snack line made exclusively for guests with special dietary needs. Many of them are free of the top 8 common allergens too, but you’ll want to check the labels to make sure before you enjoy them, as not all of the Snacks with Character items are top 8 safe. And, even better? The Snacks with Character snacks are produced by your favorite special diets brands, like Enjoy Life Foods. At the time of publication, this line of snacks was currently being re-branded and re-themed, making it a bit harder to find them in the parks and resorts. The snack guide has been updated to reflect some of these supply changes.

73

#7 - TURKEY LEGS

Location(s): • Various Kiosks at the Magic Kingdom and Epcot They may seem more like a meal than a snack, but turkey legs are a popular snack choice at Disney World. They are both gluten free and dairy free and a classic theme park treat to enjoy while you’re at the Disney Parks.

74

#8 ICE CREAM SUNDAES

Location(s): • Various Kiosks, Quick Service, and Table Service Dining Locations If can get downright hot at Disney World, especially in the summer. Sometimes, you just need to cool down with a sweet treat. Guests with special dietary needs don’t worry about having to miss out. Disney World serves both regular and non-dairy ice cream. You can find safe options at a variety of locations. My favorite ice cream sundae? It has to be the No Way Jose Sundae at Beaches and Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. It can be made gluten free, dairy free, and vegan and is filled with rich peanut butter and chocolate goodness.

75

#9 - CANDIED BACON

Location(s): • Westward Ho - Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom Bacon and sugar. What can be better? If you are a fan of salty and sweet combinations, you’ll love the flavor of Disney’s version of this snack currently found at Westward Ho in Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom. If you’ve had candied bacon before, you may be a bit surprised by the size and texture of this version. But, if you’re a bacon fan, you’re sure to love this treat that is both gluten free and dairy free -- made with Nueske’s Bacon and lots of sugar. 76

#10 - FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES

Location(s): • Various Carts & Kiosks at all Disney Theme Parks It may seem silly, but sometimes you just want some fruit and vegetables. They make a great go-to snack when you need a break from indulging in beignets, sundaes, popcorn, and Dole Whips.

BEST BETS FOR SPECIAL DIETS DINING IN THE PARKS

When it comes to dining at Disney World with a special dietary need, it can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you know there are so many restaurants that can accommodate special diets guests. So, how do you know which restaurants are best? We’ve compiled a list of the locations that we consider the best bets for dining in the Disney theme parks with a special dietary need. These are the locations that can either provide specific food items (like Allergy Chicken Tenders) or are known for accommodating special dietary needs. While most of the locations in this list are owned and operated by the Disney Company, there are a few select dining locations that are not. Those non-Disney owned restaurants listed are well-known for going above and beyond to provide safe options for guests. You can see a larger list of non-Disney owned restaurants in this book, and we have also noted which restaurants in this section are not owned and operated by Disney.

79

ANIMAL KINGDOM THEME PARK - BEST BETS Quick Service Locations

Restaurantosaurus

Pizzafari

Best Bet for: Burgers, Allergy Chicken Tenders, and Fries Best Bet for: Pizza If you or your little ones love pizza, Pizzafari is the quick service restaurant for you. Located in Discovery Island, you’ll find both gluten free and dairy free pizza options at Pizzafari. This restaurant currently carries non-dairy cheese and can also accommodate vegan guests.

If you crave classic theme park foods like burgers, fries, and chicken tenders, Restaurantosaurus is a good go-to in the Animal Kingdom park. You’ll find these favorites available gluten free and dairy free at this quick service restaurant, located in Dinoland U.S.A.

80

Satu’li Canteen

Best Bet for: Small Plates and Table Service Quality in a Lounge Setting While it’s not quite a full table service restaurant, the Nomad Lounge, connected to Tiffins in Discovery Island, provides guests with a table service quality meal without having to make an Advance Dining Reservation. Nomad Lounge’s small plates menu is almost entirely gluten free and many dishes can be made dairy free too. For those who are gluten free, their gluten free churros (which can only be ordered in the Nomad Lounge) are a must order on any visit.

Best Bet for: Unique and Healthy Dishes

Tusker House

If you want food options that are a bit different or want something a little healthier, Satu’li Canteen, located in Pandora: World of Avatar is a great choice. This restaurant serves some of the most unique quick service options in any Disney theme park. For guests with special dietary needs, the custom bowls provide a variety of options and customization.

Table Service Locations Nomad Lounge

Best Bet for: Character Dining If you are looking for a character meal, Tusker House, located in Harambe provides a safari filled experience. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, guests will enjoy both African and American-style food in an all-you-care-to-enjoy setting. Breakfast includes Allergy Mickey Waffles and more. And, all of the meals include time with Safari Donald and his friends.

81

Yak & Yeti

*Not owned & operated by Disney Best Bet for: A La Carte Table Service Options Although this restaurant, located in Asia, is not owned and operated by Disney, Yak & Yeti is a good table service option for guests who do not want to dine at a buffet or signature dining location in the Animal Kingdom. The chefs at Yak & Yeti will speak to guests at their table about options, and guests who are gluten free and dairy free will enjoy the Pan-Asian inspired dishes like rice noodle bowls.

82

EPCOT THEME PARK - BEST BETS Quick Service Locations

Electric Umbrella

La Cantina de San Angel

Best Bet for: Burgers, Allergy Chicken Tenders, and Fries *Not owned & operated by Disney Best Bet for: Tacos If you’re craving something different than burgers and fries, La Cantina de San Angel located in the Mexico Pavilion in the World Showcase is an excellent option. Most of the food served at this quick service restaurant is naturally gluten free. But, you’ll want to double-check with a cast member about options when you visit to be sure you have the most up-to-date information, especially since La Cantina de San Angel is not owned and operated by the Disney Company.

Sometimes, a good burger or allergy chicken tenders are exactly what you want to eat in the theme parks. With Liberty Inn in the World Showcase closing, Electric Umbrella is now our top choice for classic theme park fare in Epcot. We especially love ordering allergy friendly chicken tenders at this spot. Electric Umbrella is set to close for refurbishment in 2020, so this location may not be open when you visit.

83

Sunshine Seasons

Table Service Locations

Best Bet for: Unique and Healthy Dishes

Coral Reef

Before you head to Soarin’ or Living with the Land, grab a meal at Sunshine Seasons. This quick service restaurant not only serves food grown at the Land Pavilion, where this restaurant is located, but it also offers guests healthy and unique meal options. We love the Grill Station which is entirely gluten free (at the time of this publication) and includes Rotisserie Chicken, Grilled Pork Chops, and Grilled Salmon. Sunshine Seasons is also one of the few quick service locations in the theme parks, where you can speak to a chef directly, which makes for a lot more special dietary needs options.

Best Bet for: Seafood and Views For those who love fresh seafood and enjoy a meal with a view, you can’t get any better in Epcot than Coral Reef, located at the Seas Pavilion in Future World. We always enjoy the seafood options at the restaurant, but non-seafood lovers or those with fish and shellfish allergies will also enjoy the food options here too. Be sure to ask for a seat near the front of the restaurant close to the Coral Reef Aquarium to watch the marine life swim by as you dine.

84

Garden Grill

Rose & Crown Dining Room

Best Bet for: Character Dining Get a chance to meet Farmer Mickey along with Chip & Dale at the Garden Grill, located in the Land Pavilion in Future World. This all-you-careto-enjoy family style meal has some of the best character interactions in the park. Plus, there’s lots of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner -though we’re partial to dinner. Even better? A lot of the food offered at Garden Grill is grown at the Land Pavilion too.

Best Bet for: Classic British Fare Epcot’s World Showcase restaurants offer a lot of unique meal options for guests. One of our favorites has to be Rose & Crown Dining Room, located in the United Kingdom Pavilion. The food gives guests a taste of classic British fare, while being super approachable and a popular choice for everyone in the whole family. We love getting a classic curry or baked fish and chips along with a pint of our favorite hard cider for a truly authentic British meal experience.

85

HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS THEME PARK - BEST BETS Quick Service Locations

Backlot Express

ABC Commissary

Best Bet for: Burgers, Allergy Chicken Tenders, and Fries Backlot Express is our go-to quick service restaurant in Hollywood Studios for classic theme park fare -- offering burgers, fries, and allergy chicken tenders. Plus, this restaurant has lots of seating, including indoor seating, perfect for staying cool on a hot day in the park. Best Bet for: Hearty Dinner Options Burgers, fries, and allergy chicken tenders are a staple at ABC Commissary for lunch. But, dinner is where this quick service restaurant really shines. If you’re looking for a substantial dinner without paying table service prices, ABC Commissary offers some excellent options. Dinner includes Chimichurri Steak, Lemon Pepper Salmon, and BBQ Ribs. MAGIC KINGDOM THEME PARK - BEST BETS Quick Service Locations

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

Columbia Harbour House

Best Bet for: Burgers, Allergy Chicken Tenders, and Fries

Best Bet for: Allergy Chicken Tenders When it comes to allergy chicken tenders, Columbia Harbour House, located in Liberty Square in the Magic Kingdom, is hands down our favorite spot to visit. While the allergy chicken tenders offered there are the same offered at other Disney restaurants, there’s just something special about the way they fry the chicken tenders at Columbia Harbour House. Plus, they serve some of the largest portions we’ve ever had. We recommend ordering chicken tenders and dining upstairs for dinner and a great view of the Haunted Mansion.

If dinner and a show is your speed, you’ll love Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. It’s home to the world famous animatronic, Sonny Eclipse. This animatronic entertains with a set of songs throughout your visit. For dining options, we usually order burgers and fries here and ask for toppings from the Cosmic Ray’s toppings bar to be added to our tray directly from the kitchen to avoid cross-contamination for a truly customizable meal.

This all-you-care-to-enjoy meal offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner character dining. We recommend the “Tastes Like Chicken...Because It Is!” dish which includes gluten free fried chicken. Of course, no matter what you order, you’re bound to enjoy the fun atmosphere and terrific theming.

LOOKING BACK... SARAH’S FAVORITE FOODIE FINDS OF 2019

Favorite Foods of 2019

There are some Walt Disney World favorites that have been served in the parks and resorts for years. Dole Whips, Popcorn, Allergy-Friendly Mickey waffles and so many other. These are, of course, favorites that I can never get enough of. But, each year, Disney World continues to update the special dietary needs options that are served to guests. Whether they’re adding new snacks or dishes in their restaurants or opening new dining locations, there’s always something new for guests with special dietary needs to experience at the Disney Parks & Resorts. In 2019, Walt Disney World saw the opening of several new resorts which included new restaurants. And, we also saw the addition of over 400 plant-based items to the Disney parks & resorts in the fall. With so many new additions and offerings, there were lots of new fun things to try during 2019. Here are some of my top Gluten Free & Dairy Free Finds from last year. This includes new dishes, experiences (including first-time visits), and longtime favorites that I had not been to in a few years.

106

Teppan Edo Japan Pavilion / Epcot After having some less than magical dining experiences at the Japan pavilion in Epcot, most of the dining locations there were off my list of places to dine. But, thanks to blog reader Sarah C. and her family, I learned that Teppan Edo does an outstanding job accommodating guests with special dietary needs. In fact, Brandon and I dined here twice in 2019!

This Teppanyaki-style meal includes chefs preparing meals in front of you in a fun and lively way. Of course, if you have special dietary needs, you’ll want to speak with a manager. They will ensure that, if needed, your food is prepared in the kitchen to avoid cross-contamination. Both Brandon and I enjoyed safe gluten free, dairy free, and food allergy friendly meals that featured delicious salad, stir-fry, and protein of our choice. And, it was just plain fun! This is a great dining experience, especially if you have a large party to dine with. 107

Kona Cafe Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Kona Cafe is a restaurant that Brandon and I both really enjoy for dinner. We love the relaxed atmosphere and pan-Asian inspired meals. But, I hadn’t been to breakfast at Kona in a long time. Once one of my all-time favorite breakfast locations at the Disney Parks & Resorts, Kona had changed a lot. And, I just wasn’t as impressed

with their breakfast options anymore. But, that changed when I went back in 2019. The menu may have changed, but there is a lot to enjoy at Kona. New in 2019 was the addition of gluten free and dairy free Tonga Toast sliders, which completely lived up to the hype. I also tried the gluten free (and easily modified to be dairy free) macadamia nut pancakes, which were another breakfast favorite. And, the Polynesian Egg Platter is the perfect combination of sweet and salty breakfast staples. 108

Three Bridges Bar & Grill Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort Coronado Springs Resort saw the opening of several new Disney-owned restaurants in 2019, including Three Bridges Bar & Grill, which offers al fresco, covered dining in the middle of the resort’s lake. Of course, we had to try it, especially since we’re such big fans of other al fresco dining options at Disney World, like Geyser Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort.

The restaurant’s signature burger has quickly become one of our top favorite burgers on Disney property. Featuring crispy potato, roasted garliclemon aïoli, Manchego cheese (if you can have dairy) and served with paprika fries made in a dedicated fryer -- this burger is hands down one of the best we’ve ever had at Walt Disney World. If burgers aren’t your thing, there are also plenty of other options that can be easily made gluten free and dairy free too.

109

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre Hollywood Studios

ally shout out #CastCompliments to on social media.

If there’s one table service restaurant that Brandon & I would choose as our go-to spot in the parks, it would have to be Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre in Hollywood Studios. We love this restaurant for its unique theme and the excellent special dietary needs options. We’re continually surprised at how accommodating the chefs are at Sci-Fi Dine-In. In fact, it’s the restaurant that we continu-

We both love their fried food options -- made in a dedicated fryer. And, Sci-Fi Dine-In is great for sandwiches, burgers, and salads. If you’re craving a steak, they’ve got you covered too. Of course, we can’t ever pass up their crazy good allergy-friendly milkshakes. One the top of my list in 2019? The gluten free, dairy free & vegan cookie milkshake. It’s an out-of-this-world way to end a meal. 110

‘Ohana Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort The restaurant’s at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort are some of my favorite at Walt Disney World. And, ‘Ohana is a restaurant that I can eat at again and again. It’s a favorite of family and friends alike with lots of options and excellent special dietary needs accommodations. While ‘Ohana’s character breakfast is nice, for me, it’s all about dinner at ‘Ohana. This all-you-care-to-

enjoy meal includes beef, shrimp, and chicken grilled skewers, rice, stir-fry veggies, chicken wings, and a hearty salad. Chefs at ‘Ohana will make sure you don’t go hungry and will serve you large platters of food inspired by the Hawaiian islands. Be sure to ask for gluten free sauces, including a gluten free sweet & sour sauce and teriyaki sauce to round out your meal.

111

Favorite Snacks of 2019 Curry Corn on the Cob Harambe Fruit Market / Animal Kingdom! Curry spice and everything nice. That’s what this grilled corn on the cob is made of. If you love grilled corn, you can’t pass up this fresh snack.

Candied Bacon Westward Ho / Magic Kingdom Kingdom!

Everything is better with bacon, am I right? Thick cut bacon cooked in brown sugar makes for a sweet and salty pick-me-up.

Gingerbread Spice Beignets Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory / Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Allergy-friendly beignets are made even better when served with a seasonal twist that are only available during the winter holiday season.
