STUDY ABROAD Higher Education in the United States has long been the envy of populations around the world. While true, the models of higher education practiced on the European continent have also been models used around the world in countries which were subjects of European colonialism. Spain and Portugal are countries in which many of the early universities were founded and from which the greatest explorers of the middle ages came. The University of Salamanca in Spain is the third oldest university in Europe, founded 1134. The University of Valladoid, founded in Spain in 1241, The University of Coimbra, founded in in Portugal in 1290, the University of Barcelona, founded in Spain in 1451 and the University of Santiago de Campostela, founded in 1495, soon after the discovery of America by Spanish funded explorers, are among the oldest universities in the western world. We will visit three of these universities. The influence of these countries and their institutions all combine to create cultures and higher education systems which are unique in the world. As a result, the faculty of the Higher Education and Community College Leadership Graduate Programs at Old Dominion University invite you to join us in a course to study higher education in Portugal and Spain, as

5

well as to join us for the study abroad component of this class in these beautiful countries over Spring Break 2016. We will study the curriculum and organization of the higher education system in Spain and Portugal through visits to several of the institutions of higher education in and around Lisbon, Porto and Salamanca, and in cities which are close enough for day-trips, and those which are available between the two major cities in Portugal. We will examine the similarities and differences in the ancient and current system to that in the US, as well as how the system fits within the model being implemented in the European Union as a whole. Such a program cannot be all work of course. We will plan a number of cultural experiences while in Spain and Portugal, experience the night life of two of Europe’s most interesting cities, sample Portuguese and Spanish cuisine at its finest, see the history, art and architecture of Portugal and Spain and experience the exciting history of Europe. This is the educational and cultural experience of a life time. Don’t miss it. Plan to join us in this course and on our exciting study abroad experience during spring break from March 2 until March 12, 2016.
