AWARDS, GRANTS & Kellie Crawford Sorey Administrator of the Year 2016 (Tidewater Community College); entered into SACSCOC Peer Reviewer registry Adrienne Giles Adrienne accepted a new position February 2016 in the Student Success Center at Old Dominion University. She is now the Academic Success Coordinator in the office of Sophomore Success and Continuance. She finished her Education Specialist Degree in Higher Education Summer 2015. Caleb Marsh “CCC&TI’s Instructor Caleb Marsh was recognized as a statewide semifinalist for the R.J. Reynolds Excellence in Teaching Award. I’ve served as a faculty member at the Donald D. SPECIAL RECOGNITION Kim Grewe “Kim Grewe, current CCL student, was selected by the Open Education Group as a 2016-17 OER Research Fellow. Grewe was one of 21 candidates chosen
from national pool of 67 extremely well-qualified applicants. The OER Research Fellowship provides funding support, mentoring in OER research, and guidance in identifying, researching, and writing specific OER projects. The fellowship is directly aligned with Grewe’s dissertation topic: the impact of OER on student learning outcomes. Lynette Hauser Lynette Hauser was appointed humanities discipline lead for the Language, Math, and Science division at TCC’s Portsmouth campus for the upcoming academic year. During the 2017 Summer Insititute Awards Ceremony, we will be honoring VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois with a Distinguished Career Award, naming a lecture series in his honor. We have the distinct pleasure of haveing Dr. Walter Bumphus, President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges, as our first speaker in the DuBois Leadership Lecture Series.r
Glenn DuBois became chancellor of the Virginia Community College System in July 2001, serving as chief executive officer of a 23-college, 40-campus system of comprehensive community colleges. He was previously commissioner and CEO of the New Hampshire Community Technical College System, with seven campuses, and was director of community colleges for the State University of New York, one of the nation’s largest networks of community colleges. In addition, he has more than 10 years of teaching experience Walter G. Bumphus is President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. From 2007 to January 1, 2011, Dr. Bumphus served as a professor in the Community College Leadership Program and as chair of the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. He also held the A. M. Aikin Regents Endowed Chair in Junior and Community College Education Leadership. He previously served as president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) from 2001 to 2007. LCTCS later conferred upon him the title of President Emeritus of the

Summer Institute Guest Scholar 2017 Beverly Walker-Griffea Walker-Griffea has been a long-time advocate for collegiate student success, serving community college students in various capacities for over twenty years. Dr. Beverly, as she prefers to be called, has a passion for ensuring all students have access to quality, affordable, and effective learning experiences. She chose to share her talents with community college institutions because of her deep connection to the community college mission and commitment to meet the academic, training, and lifelong learning needs of communities by educating all citizens that desire to learn. She believes community colleges must support the local community’s economic viability by preparing a skilled and successful workforce. Dr. Beverly is the first female and first African American president in Mott Community College’s history. She is committed to academic excellence, student access and success, dynamic industry partnerships, and significantly impacting local economies. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Child Development from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Broadcasting from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The ODU Educational Leadership and Foundations Department is very excited to welcome Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea as our guest scholar and we look forward to you joining us and having the opportunity to share in her wealth of knowledge.

Stacey Parks Academic Advisor for the Interdisciplinary Studies Teacher Preparation and the International Studies programs. Sherrell Hendrix Began working as an Operations Analyst for Green Dot Public Schools Tennessee this past summer. Amy Bartgis Ryan Promoted to the Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Giving at Christopher Newport University. I also got married 2 weeks after graduating from ODU! Ashley (Jarrett) Crute Left George Mason University in January of this year and moved to my undergraduate alma mater, Longwood University as the Associate Director of Career Services in the Office of Alumni and Career Services. Yasmine Farley Successfully defended my dissertation on September 20, 2016. My dissertation is titled, An Exploration of Identity and Career Development of African American Women in Higher Education Leadership: Does Hair Style Make a Difference?. My dissertation committee members were Dr. Dana Burnett (Chair), Dr. Jennifer Del Corso, Dr. Mitchell Williams, and Dr. Alan Woody Schwitzer. Amanda Finch In April of 2015 my husband and I welcomed our third child, a girl. Her 2 older brothers are very proud and very protective. In August of 2016 I was promoted from Director of Community Standards to Associate Vice President of Student Development. I remain employed at SUNY Oneonta. Trey Mayo In August 2016 I became the first director of advising for the Darden College of Education at ODU. I am looking forward to establishing a new advising center in the new Education Building this academic year, and also improving current advising practices within the college. It’s great to be back in DCOE! Brian Kurisky In August of 2016, I was elected to the Governing Board for Sigma Pi Fraternity, International by the delegates at the 53rd Convocation held in Las Vegas, NV. I am one of six Board Members and hold the title of Grand Secretary.

Updates Scott W. Kemp In August, I was asked to fill the position of Interim Vice President for Student Success at Germanna Community College. In this position, I oversee the Registrar’s Office, the Financial Aid Office, the Student Development Office, the Academic Technology and Learning Support Office and the Faculty Advising Coordinator. The position will last through the spring, at which time the college will conduct a search for a new Vice President, with guidance from the newly hired President. I am excited about this opportunity and have learned so much in the 6 weeks I have been here so far. Seann Kalagher In January 2016, I began working as an Associate for Margolis Healy, consulting with them on campus Title IX, Clery Act and student conduct reviews. Jerrica Washington In July I accepted a new position at the University of South Florida, St Petersburg as their Assistant Director of Activities & Programs. I also got engaged in July and plan to get married in February of 2017! Leah (Douglas) Morrison ( HIED ‘11) married Keegan Morrison (ODU Computer Science ‘07) in May 2016. Katelyn Morrill Moving to Richmond VA brought many “firsts” for me including my first full time job, my first time not working in Residence Life, and my first apartment with my Boyfriend. Mike Rapay Benjamin Bruce Rapay, 3rd child, was born on July 1, 2016. Tiffany Ray Named Interim Dean of Enrollment Management at Thomas Nelson Community College in August 2016. Adam Hutchison Named Provost at Texas State Technical College in Waco on May 1, 2016 Lauren McNeill Jackson On Saturday, August 27, 2016, Ms. Lauren McNeill married Dr. Karl Jackson in Wilmington, NC. The Jackson’s live in Petersburg, VA and are both college educators in the Richmond, VA area. Sandra Adams Promoted to Residence Life and Housing Coordinator at South Georgia State College in September 2016. Travelled in June to Rochester, NY to participate in the Safe Zone Train-the-Trainer Certification Course. Established a Safe Space Program at my institution and am also the Co-Coordinator/Co-Founder of R.I.S.E. (Retention Involves Student Empowerment), which serves our students that are coming out of homeless or foster care situations and those students that are struggling with everyday needs. CAREER DAY Peggy Gesing, Higher Education PhD student, worked closely with Career Development Services and Student Engagement and Enrollment in the developmen of the HIED Career Day which was a huge success with Guest Speake Brooke Roberts of Inside Study Abroad and Panelist from Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Weslyan.

APHE Academic Perspectives in Higher Education CALL FOR PAPERS Academic Perspectives in Higher Education (APHE) is an academic, peer-reviewed publication focused on contemporary issues in higher education. The goal of the publication is to feature the results of research, review print publications or other media of professional interest, and report on “cutting edge� best practices in higher education. APHE encourages submission of manuscripts from a wide range of academic fields related to higher education including student affairs, community college leadership, psychology, sociology, and cultural studies. Among the many topics that APHE focuses on are: College Athletics Higher Education Funding Housing and Residence Life Internationalization of Higher Education Military Students in Higher Education Alumni and current students are encouraged to submit. Consider submitting a version of the best paper that you have written that relates to the above topics; or, if you choose, an original book review or research article.
