WELCOME Dear Students: Welcome to the 2017 Summer Institute. The world of Higher Education is an exciting area in which to study and work, and we’ll continue to meet and bring inspired people together in forums like this, to ensure our Old Dominion University remains at the cutting edge. It is remarkable how our program continues to grow and evolve and I relish the chance to be with you; new students, current students, faculty, staff and alumni fellows from all across the United States. Like you, I am delighted to welcome our guest scholars, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea. I know she will offer intriguing perspectives and invaluable experience. The Summer Institute is an opportunity to learn and develop the right skills so lives and communities are strengthened. Guest Scholar Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, Ph.D. Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea became the seventh president of Mott Community College (Flint, Michigan) in August 2014.

Walker-Griffea has been a long-time advocate for collegiate student success, serving community college students in various capacities for more than 20 years. Dr. Beverly, as she prefers to be called, has a passion for ensuring all students have access to quality, affordable, and effective learning experiences. She chose to share her talents with community college institutions because of her deep connection to the community college mission and commitment to meet the academic, training, and lifelong learning needs of communities by educating all citizens that desire to learn. She believes community colleges must support the local community’s economic viability by preparing a skilled
Dr. Beverly’s long history in education includes serving as Vice President of Student Affairs at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia; Dean of Student Development at Houston Community College-Central Campus; and Interim Dean of Health and Environmental Sciences at Spokane Community College. Additionally, while at Spokane Community College, Dr. Beverly earned tenure in three years as a counseling faculty member leading the award-winning Single-Parent Program, and served as Chair for the Institutional Diversity Department. Service is important to Dr. Beverly. She serves nationally as the President for the American Association for Women in Community Colleges and as a member of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors, as well as Co-Chair of the American Association of Community College’s Academic, Student and Community Development Commission. She has also served as a member of onsite and off-site review committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges Accreditation and Reaffirmation Process. Locally, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Flint Health Coalition, McLaren Flint, Carriage Town Ministries, Metro Community Development, and the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA). In addition, Dr. Beverly is a member of several committees for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce including the Operating Board of Directors, Genesee Global Action Team, and the Regional Leadership Council. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Flint Rotary Club, and the Flint Chapter of the NAACP. Dr. Beverly is the first female and first African American president in Mott Community College’s history. She is committed to academic excellence, student access and success, dynamic industry partnerships, and significantly impacting local economies. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Child Development from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Broadcasting from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Keynote Presenter Dr. Walter Bumphus Dr. Walter G. Bumphus is President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. From 2007 to January 1, 2011, Dr. Bumphus served as a professor in the Community College Leadership Program and as chair of the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. He also held the A. M. Aikin Regents Endowed Chair in Junior and Community College Education Leadership. He previously served as president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) from 2001 to 2007. LCTCS later conferred upon him the title of President Emeritus of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. From November 2000 to September 2001 he was chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC). Prior to joining BRCC, Dr. Bumphus worked in the corporate world serving as President of the Higher Education Division of Voyager Expanded Learning. Six years prior, he served as president of Brookhaven College in Dallas County Community College District. Dr. Bumphus holds a bachelor's degree in speech communications and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Murray State University, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin. In 1992, Dr. Bumphus was recognized as a distinguished graduate from both Murray State University and The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Bumphus holds the distinction of being one of the few leaders in the field of education to receive the ACCT Marie Y. Martin CEO of the Year Award, to chair the AACC Board of Directors, and to receive the AACC Leadership Award.
Distinguished Career Award Dr. Glenn BuBois Glenn DuBois became chancellor of the Virginia Community College System in July 2001, serving as chief executive officer of a 23-college, 40-campus system of comprehensive community colleges. He was previously commissioner and CEO of the New Hampshire Community Technical College System, with seven campuses, and was director of community colleges for the State University of New York, one of the nation’s largest networks of community colleges. In addition, he has more than 10 years of teaching experience.
UNIVERSITY ID The University ID Card A University identification card is a must for all Old Dominion University students and should be carried at all times while on campus. The card, which identifies you as a currently enrolled student, also entitles you to various other privileges and potential uses on and off campus.
