Biomimicry of Feather
an approach to solve human challenges by mimicking the nature’s pa erns and strategies.
A feather seems feeble, but in fact, the feather is very strong and lightweight becasue of its material and interlocking structure with hierarchies. Also, the bending behave inspires the arch-shape possibility.

ADVANCED BUILDING DESIGN ARCHITECUTAL RESEARCH FACILITY
“Essentially design is nothing else but the encounter with given realities (actualities, situations, circumstances, conditions, or experiences) in terms of their transformative possibilities and potentialities. Design opens up these possibilities through initiating a process of negotiation with the given which extends the boundaries of the previously possible.” - Clive Dilnot The intent of the studio is to join the practical with the poetic through the development of architectural research, an understanding of the practical forces at work on and within architecture, and an awareness and comprehension of multiple-scale design stragegies. The ethos of the studio is rooted in the development of a “construction ethic” - an attitude about instrumentalizing the materials , techiques, and processes of construction.

ADVANCED BUILDING DESIGN - THE COLUMBUS DESIGN CENTER
“…site as armature or framework1; site as geomorphical figure; site as ecosystem or geological fragment; and site as temporal phenomena, haecceity and subjective experience . These lenses for site-reading and making assume that plots are not emptycanvases, but full spaces, full of nature and history, whose latent forms and meanings can be surfaced, and made palpable through design.”
Elizabeth Meyer “Within architecture, once the ground is revealed and its structure made visible, it is possible to give the ground a voice that is equal to that of the products of human artifice. At this point architecture can open to and take into its domain a rich world that can augment what architecture is capable of.”

Required various 13 programs was given with 35,000sf boundary. Since the building contains residential programs, it is necessary to separate private spaces for resident users and public space for outsider users so that each user cannot infringe on their using building by one another. The private programs are designer-in-residence studio, visiting scholar’s housing, and library reading room common space. The public ones are auditorium, café, bookstore, archives, reception & temporary exhibition, permanent collection, visitor’s center, and outside sculpture gardens.
Exploratory series of 1/16” volumetic models are from the imagined string among the programs what I grouped as private or public, and put the programs horizontally (plan) and vertically (elevation) with the string connection.
All the private spaces for residents is positioned at the end toward south direction which has a high quality of light. On the ground floor, public programs such as temporary gallery, visitor’s center, bookstore, café which are introduction of building and have character of street store are put. Then on the upper floor, the most accentual experience space are arranged in the line of a round circulation like a ring. For example, permanent collection exhibition and outside sculpture gardens In this space, people can experience a promenade walking through the inside and outside space and appreciating masterpieces and green garden. Furthermore, through part of open visual percept, inside of temporary gallery, book store, cafe, and outside of auditorium façade so that people can experience diverse spaces continuously and differently in a flow of circulation, and give an impression with material from outside, or confine another independent space from inside.

Serial Site Section The space can be considered as connected through movement - much like an architectural promenade. These series of hand section drawing is not perfectly match with the final design becasue these are not just to represent a configuration but to utilize as a tool of designing spaces, structures, enclosings, openings, floors, ceilings, and roofs. The drawing scale is 1/8”= 1’-0”. Shadows in drawing indicate natural light and apertures in the envelope. Serial drawings facilitate to show foreground and background information. page 5

Fire museum of greater cincinnati RENOVATION PROJECT
The building of the Fire Museum was home to the Engine Company #45 Firehouse. Because of this, the Fire Museum of Greater Cincinna is now designated as the Na onal Register of Historic Places. However, owner and the board of operators realized that the building is too archaic to operate for public. So the project has come to UC architecture studio. 9 students were working on the project together. Several mes of mee ng and presenta on with the boards as actual client mee ng and design proposal. At the ďŹ nal review, a endance from the boards were very glad and sa sďŹ ed with our work .

Ver cal circula on
Since the exis ng roof has a 1/16 slope, to make a roof fla en is necessary for users to u lize the spaces. The most efficient way is a deck system using pedestals which is easy to level the diffierent heights. This system can use every kinds of floor materials.
Expanding exis ng 2 vercal circula ons, the access to the roof top can be realized in a reasonable way which was to leave the basic structure without spending unnecessary expense. The point was not to damage the appearance of building for historic preservaon.
Since the exis ng air handling units are ugly looking, it is inevitable to hide the monstrous machines. The Green screen which is using green plants as blocking screen create a posi ve double effect , in aspect of providing friendly atmosphere and environment to users.
The Green screen uses the real plants which need consistent irrigaon and pumping the water from bo om to the top causes inevitable maintenance expense so that adding the rain water tank and irriga on line system from the tank to the Green screen was designed.

In modern society, a working space is the place where people spend time more than their houses they do. Accordingly, people who consider their working place as their 2nd house have increased by 40%. Moreover, the environment of the office influence the efficiency of work place.
I proposed an alternative for the EXE C&T’s office space. I made zoning each area with its charactor for convinience and efficiency. And my main design point is the concept of ‘the room in the room’ for composing a special working space. page 22

Munsu-dong Urban Type Living Housing in Yeosu-city SEPTEMBER~ , 2011
Urban Type Living Housing is a housing type that Korean government introduced according to increasing the number of one-person or two-persons household by changing urban people’s life pattern. Government coped with these demands, and excluded or mitigate the various construction standards and the installation of additional facilities for affordable housing. Desteel architecture company was requested to plan the Musu-dong Urban Type Living Housing by a business man. I helped this project, making 3D images.

URBAN NATURE AND CULTURAl FACILITY NATURE AND CULTURE
Industructuralization has resulted that people descended on the city and destroyed nature. Since then, people recognized the importance of the nature and endeavored to draw the nature in the city. Therefore nowadays we can easily approach the nature through city park. However, these city parks are limited that boring walking or running is only the activity in the city park. Remodeling the campus building
Situation
Improving building environment (circulation+light) Based on historical, cultural, structural, economical value judgment and analysis of the spatial charactors and programs, this project is to remodel Helen building in the campus of ewha woman’s university with thesis of design which includes improvement of exterior, alteration of the purpose of use, change and extension of the interior.
Helen building was constructed in 1985, used by the nursing department in the health science school. Dark part of the building has problems.
Problem 01 This building is left out not only by nursing studnets, but also by other students. 02 Bad light environment located under the hill. 03 dark and stuffy space because of the too much low height of the ceiling.
CONCEPT
I planed to enhance the light environment maximizing the inflow of the light through the skylight, atrium, high curtain wall.
2009 - 1 semaster architecture design - individual work
Solution 01 To solve the low ceiling problem, I planed to subtract some floors and insert the new frame which has higher ceiling. 02 To solve bad light environment, I planed to set whole front curtain wall to two side of the building. 03 Providing the short cut for the nursing students and outsiders, I planed to induce the revitalization of existing building space.

02) LIGHT & SPACE
As a part of the atrium, the light is not dropped directly but diffused indirectly by hitting the wall so that the light create calm and still space.
The column in the indoor made the shadow by the light of the outdoor so that the mood of the interior is changed to be vibrant and rhythmical.
2009 - 1 semaster architecture design - individual work
It is perceptible that there is contrast between the atrium and non-atrium glaringly so that difference of spatial charactors arise.
From the gap, the light falls from the upper storey to low storey. Accordingly the upper storey is bright and low storey is dark so that the space is formed with light and shadow, and become to feel a copious experience. page 48

communicare green peace
The urban design has proceeded by city of seoul to chang the exsisting dosshouse to urban park. However, I think that this area is near Seoul station where many homeless people and a-dayworkers live that the dosshouse are their ground of life. Although clearing off the old and coarse facilities seems to be best choice for the wealth to make clean urban space, the lack of consideration for the poor would eventually come to grief to anyone who is the member of the society if we look over the repect of society. Therefore, I scrutinize the problem, propose not to eliminate the dosshouse, but to be able to perform as the meliorated dosshouse and urban park altogather. The primary concept is that through the recovery of geology, the site is changed to be intriguing urban park as well as has programs included the social function for the poor under the park.
