Blog 5 School is back in! I am a step mom who takes care of my stepdaughter full time with my significant other so I know how difficult it can be to keep little ones on a good eating tack while life spinning around us. When I was first starting my collage years I was sure I was going to be a preschool teacher/director and I spent many hours in the preschool. I was often blown away by what I would see children eating for breakfast and lunch. Giving children treats is a must; however, I would see children with a variety of “treats” in one meal to choose from. Example: In one child’s breakfast I would see the fallowing, chocolate chip granola bar, banana yogurt, and apple juice. Sounds healthy enough right? Wrong! There was nothing in that meal that wasn’t full of artificial sugar. Out of that meal I would have used only one of the items as a “treat” allowing the others to be something fresh such as, a real banana, and oats with granola, and a small amount of raw honey. Here is a example of an average lunch I see parents send with the children: a sandwich, apple, chips, a juice, and cookies. Typically the child would eat the cookies first, juice with the cookie, chips next, and maybe a bite of the sandwich, leaving the apple untouched. In a school setting children are not told what to eat. The younger ones will be given all the food they have in their meal all at once allowing them to independently eat what they want in what order. Therefor what you put in their lunch is what they will eat. Try adding fruit, raw nuts, rolled up meat and cheese, an applesauce, and a water. You’ll be surprised what your child will eat at school, even if they tell you they wont at home There are times when my daughter wants to eat a lunchable but I know that others such as grandma or others that will give her that but Rylee knows not to ask me for that. Thank you for spending a few minuets with me, and reading along.
