Coastal Scrub Boardwalk

antecedent SPRING 2016 The Morro Bay Power Plant, while controversial, is an iconic landmark of the Central Coast. The history of Morro Bay is a blend between the indigenous populations that first settled here and the industrial boom of the power plant. Because of these two polarizing pieces of history, I wanted to create a cultural center that celebrated both of these aspects. In addition to creating areas to celebrate both the power plant and the Native American history, part of my design was to also clean up the brownfield site with bioremediation. This project truly has been one of my favorites as it has allowed me to blend my passion for history with my love for design. This is also one of the few projects that have been of our choosing within the San Luis Obispo County area.

Misé en scene sixth street bridge redesign winter 2016 The impact of film in Hollywood is known across the world. The idea of putting film artists in the same location as an iconic Los Angeles landmark like the Sixth Street Viaduct only seemed fitting. The bridge has been displayed in many iconic shots in film such as in Grease, Anchorman, and music videos by the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars. The focus of the project was to work in teams of an architect and landscape architects to design an artists village of a specific art form in the space around the Sixth Street Viaduct. “Misé en scene” is an term referring to design elements of film; meaning “visual theme” or “telling a story”, which we felt we were doing in this project. While the architect worked on the built forms and landscape architects worked with the outdoor area, the experience allowed both groups to collaborate in an interdisciplinary setting. Along with design, we were tasked to create construction documents to understand how designs make it to reality.

the waffle winter 2016 The inspiration for this project came from D.H Lawrence’s poem, “The Third Thing”. He proposes that the synergistic act of molecules coming together results in an unexplainable phenomenon much greater than either hydrogen or oxygen acting as separate elements. Each member of our team was given a term, either tectonic or stereotomic, and were tasked to manipulate form to hybridize these operations as design drivers. The project goal was to design and make an object that is capable of accepting the human form in a rest position. With the words fracture, waffle, and slump, our team designed and built movable stools with a waffle construction that fit to the human form in a casual rest position.

study abroad fall 2016 Cinque Terre. Munich. Rome. Florence. Lake Garda. Verona. Naples. Pompeii. Capri. Perugia. Venice. Paris. Barcelona. Berlin. Pisa. Zurich. Prague. London. Edinburgh. Dublin. Located in Castiglion Fiorentino, a small hilltop town in pictureque Tuscany, I was able to live the greatest three months of my life. From making new friends, to brand new experiences, to travel difficulties, I was able to learn about myself and my Cal Poly peers. The sense of independence and the problem solving skills I gained from this experience are incredibly valuable, but even more so, what I was able to learn about landscape architecture has also impacted me. It has revived my love for this career and shown me all the possibilities that are out there and have been out there for designers for hundreds of years. Living under the Tuscan sun gave me the greatest memories and experiences I could ask for, and I am more than certain that I will carry those around with me wherever I go.
