greatamerican petting zoo

gives back

As a nonprofit, Rodeo Austin is proud of the impact its mission has on the youth of Texas. Rodeo Austin also strives to support other business doing good in communities. For this reason, Rodeo Austin is thrilled to partner with The Great American Entertainment Company during the 2016 Fair & Rodeo to present the petting zoo. Since 1983, The Great American Entertainment Company, has been providing animal attractions, petting zoos and agricultural education events across the country. However, their mission goes beyond simply providing a good environment for their animals; the founders are dedicated to giving back to their community. The company started 33 years ago with David and Dianne Linderman, who ran a ranch for troubled teens. When the Lindermans took over the operations of a wildlife park, the teens followed suit, where they became a vital part of it’s operations.

Now, Great American and their wide variety of animals have traveled nationwide. The animals have been featured in movies such as Twilight and Kindergarten Cop, Baby Gap magazines, and even made appearances at the parties of well-known celebrities.

After many successful years of running The Great American Entertainment Company, the Lindermans partnered with several of the former teens to take the reigns of the company. One such individual, Pamela Jaeger, serves as the Administrative Coordinator.

Part of what makes the Great American stand out in the industry is their barrier-free enclosures. They understand that the most important part of a petting zoo is the connection between humans and animals, so they have a more open approach to the typical layout. Once they set up their main pen, the animals, and people, are free to roam around together.

“[The Linderman’s] empower and believe in kids, which gives them the motivation to go out and do something with their lives,” Jaeger said. “Whether kids work one season or several years, Great American makes a lasting impact.”

Rodeo Austin is excited to work with Great American, not only to provide top-notch animal entertainment, but to work together to impact the lives of youth. Stop by Kidstown daily from 10 a.m. 5 p.m. to meet our animal friends.

artistic endeavors Rodeo Austin’s Youth Western Art Show continues to get bigger and better every year, showcasing phenomenal pieces from talented, individuals across the state. Held Saturday, January 23, 2016, young artists competed in the event, bringing in a record-breaking 309 entries. Students hope to place in the top 23, which in return will earn them a spot in Rodeo Austin’s Youth Auction. One district in particular stands out at the Rodeo Austin event. Pasadena ISD, located near Houston, brought two buses full of students who competed in the art show and anxiously awaited to see the results of the contest. “Our students get really excited for these kinds of events,” said Stephanie Albert, a teacher as Pasedena ISD’s J. Frank Dobie High School. “It’s so much fun for them to realize someone recognizes their talents and skills and how hard they have worked for this.”

In total, Pasadena ISD had 56 entries with nine of those placing in the top 23. Albert said that her students not only love this contest because of the opportunity to partake in the auction, but they enjoy the opportunity to travel. “It is nice for them to get out of the Houston area,” Albert said. “Some of our students don’t get to travel much, so it’s special for them to get to see other parts of Texas.” Albert also said that the contest not only helps improve skills, but helps them aim for a strong future. Pasadena said they will definitely continue to compete in Rodeo Austin’s art contest and appreciate such opportunities to help students grow.

Albert also said that Rodeo Austin is favored by many students at the Pasadena ISD. “Rodeo Austin definitely offers them another opportunity not only to express themselves, but to show off their skill sets,” Albert said. “They are also allowed to work on these pieces not just in the time frame of one school year, so they can start on it in the summer and find inspiration organically.” Deanna Ruiz, a junior at J. Frank Dobie High School, said this gives her more of an opportunity to branch out and try different mediums. For her second year of competing at the event, Ruiz entered a piece that received 9th place in the Traditional Art Category. “I enjoy being experimental with my artwork, and this contest provides an outlet for me to try new creative mediums, like pencil, which is hard for me,” Ruiz said. Ruiz plans on competing in the contest for a third time during her senior year, as she is eager to continue to challenge herself.

Deanna Ruiz, junior at J. Frank Dobie High School, is congratulated by Rodeo Austin Secretary-Treasurer Lance Lively. She placed 9th in the Youth Western Art Show.
