Parallel Planes San Jose State University 9th Street and San Fernando Street North Gate Lawn
There is a lawn on the San Jose State Campus that we were instructed to measure and design a structure to serve as a gathering place for students. There must be 11 parallel planes in the design that each measure 10’X12’X6. Using a mixture of positive, negative, and transluscent elements, I constructed a gathering place for students. There are 11 parallel planes, some with varied cut outs and positions.

This design is geared toward students in need of a place to sit. there are two sitting places, one on the busier side and another on the quieter side. This space is also loud on two ends, where cars and construction cause noise pollution. Given this, the parallel planes are erected in a manner to dull the souds on both sides. To avoid obstructing views, cut-outs were made in these parallel planes to allow views of the North Gate and the Sculpture. Cut outs were made in the perpendicular planes and filled with glass to allow views but also provide some amount of shelter.

Prefab Home The Soine Couple 66 Silver Mine Road
The assignment calls for a prefabricated home to be designed for a fictional client in need of 1500 square feet including a home office. Thomas Soine - Geologist (works from home) Natalie Soine - Historian (commutes) The needs of the couple are for a home reflecting the requirement of a home office, one mater bedroom, one guest bedroom, and space for entertaining. They have two dogs and do not want children. Since the home is to double as a home office for Thomas, it must reflect elements of his profession.
2
A Space planning of this home started with dividing spaces by needed squarefootage and appropriate adjacencies. It then is organized into a grid from which it grew into the ultimate floorplan.

Geo-Exterior The geological inspiration for the home’s exterior came from the rock displayed left. These colors are expressed through the paints below and the copper siding that will change over time just as geology changes over time.
Geo-interior The geological inspiration for the home’s interior came from the rock displayed right. These colorsare expressed through the paints, tile, and cabingetry below as well as through the recycled glass countertop.

Paper Printer Plus Hotel design
Crystal de Roche
nyc, new york
This project is a lesson in design process and working with a partner toward the goal of designing a hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Our concept is based on optically interesting rocks; Opal, crystals, and the Giants Causeway rock formation in Ireland. What these have in common is both interesting optical qualities and shapes or patterns. The hexagonal pattern seen in The Giant’s Causeway is reminiscent in the molecular structure of Opal which is comprised of silicon dioxide spheres arranged in a hexagonal lattice. These are themes throughout the hotel’s design.
3
Materials The wallpaper (seen at left) is designed with The color often found in opal and the Giant’s Causeway, and from an interesting rock called hematite. The Giant’s causeway and the molecular structure of opal were inspiration for the wall facade (seen below.)

3D Prints These designs were made by my partner and myself with Modo 801. The tile is designated for bathroom walls within our hotel rooms. They are to be glass, despite the material used for the model to reflect the overall theme of optical interest through crystals, opal and other rocks that retain illusionary optical effects,. Both of these designs are based on the hexagonal rock theme. The tile is a more literal translation of the Giant’s Causeway, whereas, the light fixture is representative of the molecular structure of opal.

The four upper floors are reserved for hotel guest rooms. The angled walls relate to the site by allowing views of major landmarks near or within view of the hotel. The floors are divided evenly as two different floor plans that take advantage of the views. There are two rooms per floor that serve as suites with connecting doors.
