CATALOGUE OF WORKS 6 September – 26 October 2014
FOREWORD It is with great pleasure that we present the 29th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award. The award contributes an important element to our exhibition program biannually and its continuing success is due to the contributions of many individuals and organisations over the years. We are also greatly indebted to all of the artists who have entered the award over the years and made it the diverse and rewarding experience that it is. This year we received almost 200 entries from around the world and our Judge Dr Patsy Hely has had the unenviable task of short listing the entries to the stimulating selection you see here. Our sincere thanks to Patsy for the high level of professionalism and enthusiastic commitment that she brings to the event.
The award has been the driving force behind the development of what is one of regional Australia’s most significant collections of Ceramic Art. We look forward to the continued development of the collection with this year’s winner and acquisitions. I trust you will enjoy the 29th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award and look forward to its continued encouragement of the development of the ceramic medium. John Walsh Gallery Manager Gold Coast City Gallery
We are encouraged by the continuing array of entries from many different countries that gives the award its diversity and excitement. In 2014 we welcome works from Argentina, China, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan and Switzerland, which will be on display alongside selected works from every state in Australia.
JUDGE Dr Patsy Hely is a ceramic artist and academic whose work is held in many collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the National Gallery of Australia. Her work encompasses both studio practice and writing; recent work has been shown at Moss Green Gallery, Melbourne and a book chapter ‘Buildings and the Performance of Identity’, was published in 2013 in The Territories of Identity: Architecture in the age of evolving globalisation, [eds Soumyen Bandyopadhyay and Guillermo Garma Monteil]. At the ANU School of Art she convenes the Honours and Graduate Coursework programs.
