PORTFOLIO 2022
Encouraged by the power of architectural imagination and nature dynamics, I believe in the role that we can play in creating dialogue, putting together different disciplines and planting seeds for change. My greatest fascination lies in the role of the architect as a storyteller that has the ability to inspire new ways of living for our future. We have the opportunity to widen our design scopes in a variety of scales to re-think contemporary issues. Attitudes like this can initiate a positive trigger in those who view and participate in our interventions: to reconsider their everyday habits, cultivate social and environmental values, and raise awareness towards the usage of the resources of our planet.
CURRICULUM VITAE
Especially interested in seeking inspiration from every detail that surrounds us, taking into account all the heterogeneous layers of information coexisting within a context. Every place has a story, and by keeping observant and open-minded, I believe in exploring and trying new architectural paths in our designs yet maintaining a flexible and humble position that enables us to adapt to the fluctuating contemporary challenges which we face.

INHABITING THE UNINHABITABLE: POST-NUCLEAR COFRENTES, 2056
MASTER THESIS , JUNE 2022
In a future scenario where nuclear energy has been the globally accepted solution to solve the energy crisis, an accident happening in the year 2056 obliterates any hopes for humanity’s future on the surface of the Earth. This graduation project narrates an evolutionary exploration of unconventional ways of living in a post-apocalyptic scenario in which architecture becomes the central element that creates a bond between the radioactive environment and the living systems. The architectural intervention is defined by three main intentions: the first one is the solver of conflicts between the radioactive context and the villagers. The second one is the inducer of environmental self-sufficient practices as a more sustainable approach to the use of the resources of our planet. And finally, the third intention is to give continuity to the communal and territorial systems existing in the area before the accident, creating a dialogue between pre-nuclear and post-nuclear Cofrentes. In this architectural narrative, the project builds on an evolutionary process that grows organically answering to the societal needs and resources available in the radioactive context. From the moment of the accident until the present day, the project evolves from a post-apocalyptic phase characterized by the use of scavenged materials and rudimentary constructions to a self-organizative phase, which applies the research findings explored during the first period of the graduation studio, initiating a more technological design. Post-nuclear Cofrentes exposes through the power of architectural imagination, the ever-present potentiality of a nuclear-dystopic event, a reality we might live to see.

Renaturalization centre of the Crati 1st year of Master Design Crossovers Spring Semestre 2021
Individual project
RENATURALIZATION CENTRE OF THE CRATI
DESSIGN CROSSOVERS STUDIO , JULY 2021
Among the diversity of layers coexisting in Calabria, a particular one has been recurrent within different tissues of the region from the Magna Grecia until the current days. It was given the name of the Crati, the main body of water of the Region of Calabria, currently in a detrimental state. The Renaturalization Centre of the Crati presents itself as a tool for re-population of eroded and perished riparian zones but also as an educative and informative social manoeuvre to rise awareness of climate change and the consequences of man-made actions. The intervention focused on the eroded river areas identified through an extensive research of the river, and the design objective is to create an ecosystem booster. The main inspiration for the project came from the dichotomy of temporary and permanency present in the area chosen. The torrential nature of the river results in an ever-changing and unpredictable site that is constantly being altered. On the contrary, the patterns of contention walls found perpendicularly to the river way, represent the permanent part of the site confining and embracing the terrain to diminish erosion. The architectural intervention reflects the dichotomy announced before in its social program, the materiality and the footprint of the intervention with a project that evolves and grows over time. It is understood as an offset of the memory of the place and its elements: the eroded riverbed acting as a mutable feature - which will be reflected in the project as a landscape intervention and research program - and the contention walls, the tectonic component of the project and permanent one which will be translated in the enduring part of the project. With the revitalization of one of the main catalysts throughout history of the Region of Calabria, the Crati river can be again the origin of stories, myths and cultural examples of the south of Italy.

Set against the backdrop of harsher weather conditions, 1 million homes projected as a requirement in the Netherlands by 2050, a reduction in the material usage by half, and 90,000 people expected to migrate to Rotterdam by 2035, what would the future of M4H, a post-industrial harbour, be? How would this ecosystem respond to the urban issue? The project ‘Ways of Living’ recognizes the potential of M4H not only as an answer to the ever-rising housing needs of Rotterdam but also as a critical element in connecting the surrounding isolated neighbourhoods through the much needed public spaces. The project aims at achieving this by envisioning M4H as a symbiotic ecosystem, where nature, architecture, and inhabitants integrate. It works as a laboratory studying the urban context through various scales envisioning experiments on future living across the site. The scales studied range from the urban planning perspective of reconnecting to the ways of new living configurations within a common system and the reuse and re-purpose of materials and building substances. This vision of M4H as an ecosystem brings to the forefront topics of sustainability and self-sufficiency in modular design, the relation between distinct micro-climates within an ecosystem, and the importance of recognizing the potential of existing buildings in restoring the identity of a neighborhood. As a group member, my role within the project as well was to envision individually one of the future living experiments for the neighbourhood: the farm living, shown in the following pages.

Activating the Hietalahti bay: New Helsinki Museum ERASMUS Exchange, University of Oulu Contemporary Architecture IV Spring Semestre 2016
Individual project A light in the gloomy night. A touch of warmth. The sound of the waves breaking in the harbour. Feelings that grow inside you while approaching the New Helsinki Museum. The NARK IV studio design task of the semestre was to develop a new museum for Helsinki, since at the same time the contest for the new Guggenheim of the city was happening.
ACTIVATING THE HIETALAHTI BAY: NEW HELSINKI MUSEUM
CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IV, JUNE, 2016
I chose the Hietalahti bay to place my intervention. It is located near the most centric area of Helsinki, Kamppi. Though the port maintains an active harbour program, it is not user friendly. The goal of this intervention is to grant this area a more public and social character without losing the industrial atmosphere of the bay. In order to create a continuation to the existing program of the bay, the architectural intervention is inspired by harbour structures. It consists of a set of rigid wooden boxes connected by transparent pathways. A connection to the city is provided by following the main axis of the surroundings. Each box provides a fixed envelope to a flexible program within, such as temporary and permanent expositions, an auditorium, restaurant and cafe, spaces for co-working... A continuous antagonism is present: the rigidity of the box against the fluctuation of the experiences coexisting inside the space. Within the cold and dark winters of Helsinki, you are welcome to the Hietalahti bay, where the warmth of the new museum of Helsinki will embrace any visitor of inhabitant of the city.

Individual project
A VISION FOR PÍO VERA: PARTICIPATORY URBANIZATION PROCESSES
PROYECTOS OCHO , MAY, 2017
The residential suburbs of Madrid , nowadays, can be describe as ‘‘nest cities’’. As a response of the modern life, these neighbourhoods provide housing to a large population away from the main city. It causes a disaggregation of the different classes of society, leaving some urban areas dull and flat. These areas, usually remain empty during the day, and are occupied again at night to sleep. In this project, I am fighting that monotony. The goal of this semestre was to organize an urban settlement in Pio Vera, a residential suburb in the North East area of Madrid. The way I approached the project in order to fight the monotony and the ‘‘nest’’ effect existing in similar neighbourhoods, was to include the inhabitant in the decision making processes of the design, creating a participative architectural project. I give to the residents three walls. The span and the main dimensions are fixed by the architect. However, the content and program of their house, will be a puzzle solved by the occupant: A large family, students, elder people and working class do not have the same living needs ,therefore, I am giving the future residents a choice of spaces to populate their house with. An participatory architectural design enhances the flexibility and covers a variety of different lifestyles of the cosmopolitan population of Madrid. This way, the living becomes a game, and the suburb becomes an adaptable neighbourhood, friendlier to the societal changes we are facing nowadays.

LETTER OF REFERENCE Dear Madam or Sir, I’m writing this letter to recommend Sara Ibáñez Belloso to any employer out there. I work as COO for Kanttia2 Ltd, an architecture firm based in Finland. I am also a part-time teacher at the Department of Architecture at Oulu University, where I tutor Contemporary Architecture courses for the years 3-5. The latter was where I first got to know Sara – she participated in the spring course of 2016, the task of which was to design a museum in Helsinki. Sara’s work was easily among the best that year. This year, we were fortunate enough to have Sara as an employee at Kanttia2 during the summer months. I was her supervisor for most of the time.

During her stay, Sara worked mostly on a hotel project in Helsinki and before her departure, a competition for a school in Tuusula. She was instrumental in developing the main themes and architectural language for both projects. Sara has a great work ethic and she is very, very talented as an architect. She is also quick and efficient in her work, but most importantly, she has fantastic people skills that make it easy for her to fit into a design team situation, too. We have a very low type of hierarchy at the office, and encourage everyone to take part in the discussions and the design processes – Sara’s input was always on point and very welcome. I can highly recommend Sara for any opportunity you may have available. I believe she will be just as valuable an addition to your team as she was to ours. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact me anytime.
Best regards,
