This project strives to study the ways in which the public space, and its collective facilities, may contribute to the fortification of social and cultural relationships between individuals that make up a group or society, the development and preservation of societies identity and collective memory. The subsequent fragmentation, dispersal, and privatization of urban areas led to a public space crisis, thus withdrawing itself to be the cornerstone of societies everyday life. Simultaneously, a growing individualism and anonymity is lurking within society, which gives rise to a subsequent alienation of the individual from the community and the space he inhabits. Hence, the underlying intention is to understand how this fundamental link can be restored, and the ways that Architecture can lead to the reconciliation between the individual, the society and the city. Thus, the design of a public building, an University Forum, follows the intention to respond the premises established, accommodating the idea of ‘Public House’. The project falls in a block of a previously determined urban plan for the Campo Grande area, an hybrid building formed by different typologies: a student centre, student housing, 24h study centre, and commercial spaces, gathered around a central courtyard, that agglutinates them, as in a Roman Forum. Therefore, the public building is understood as the extension of this public square, an indoor public space, capable of providing the necessary conditions for the encounter and exchange between individuals, constituting the basis for the emergence of social dynamics. 13

A central square allows the access to the different levels and all urban paths converge to its interior.

Rio de Janeiro, Olympic city, has a deficit of 20 thousand hotel rooms, and the hotel offer is outdated and of poor quality. The project tries do respond to this demand, with the creation of a temporary hotel with 120 bed unities, capable of been built in a quick and economic way. It is inserted in the cultural corridor of Rua do Lavradio, in the historical district of Lapa, where most of the buildings have the typology of a 19th century townhouse, implanted in narrow and deep lots, without frontal or lateral spacing, generating an urban environment of spatial continuity. The project is proposes the construction of 3 blocks interspersed by dense gardens of endemic vegetation. The main facade recreates the proportion and rhythm of the houses, so as to fit in the context of the Cultural Corridor, creating a harmony between ancient and contemporary architecture. The room is designed as a minimum livable unit, enough to sleep comfortably. By using containers do accommodate each room, the speed of construction is improved, since the construction of the rooms can be fabricated apart from the rest. Thus, it allows the building to be relocated with ease, creating a modular system that can be set back in another location, minimizing the impact of the construction on the site. The materials used are choose carefully to be from Brazil, minimizing the time needed for importation and bureaucracies, and Thought to create an intimate space, providing comfort and cosiness, constructing with the highly industrial construction process.

Taking advantage of the overlay system, the facilities follow the same logic. With a dedicated area facilities within the module, by overlapping them, all systems are concentrated in the same place. This facilitates assembly and access to systems for maintenance. The shaft has been dimensioned to receive: Hydraulics, Electricity, Air Conditioning, Exhaust and Sewage.

The development of Angolan cities, supported by the country’s economic growth, has led to the need to readapt existing infrastructures. The former passenger terminal at Soyo Airport has become obsolete and unable to respond to needs, and the creation of a new building is critical. The new terminal is at the culmination of an important avenue designed in the process of expansion of the city, affirming itself as a horizontal landmark in the landscape, through the design of an undulating cover that “floats” on the ground. It is the coverage that is assumed as a key part of the building, welcoming the various functions of the terminal: Departures, Arrivals, Commercial Area, Administration, Protocol Area.

This project is part of the flood mitigation master plan in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and includes four cities of the river Muriaé and Pomba: Laje de Muriaé, Cardoso Moreira, Italva and Santo António de Pádua. Due to the necessity of construction of concrete infrastructures and embankments to minimize the flooding in the cities, implanted along the riversides, the relationship between the city and the river was compromised, creating an huge impact on the landscape and the dynamics of its public spaces. Thus, a set of urban and landscape design solutions were presented, that sought to qualify the infrastructures, integrating them to the dynamics of the cities, and allowing the access of the people to the river banks through the creation of public walks and leisure areas. Principles were followed that guided the development of the projects: Integration of the new infrastructures with the existing urban fabric; Connection between pedestrian and cycle paths; Creation of leisure areas and contemplation of the landscape; Possibility of connection with water; And improvement of microclimate and contact with nature. The project sought to respond to technical and economic challenges through simple modular solutions that could be easily be implement, adding urban and landscape value to the flood containment infrastructure. Through the creation of interventions on both sides, and the integration with existing public spaces along the river, the offer of public recreation areas was extended, returning the river to the cities.

The area known as Chácara do Algodão, located in the Jardim Botânico neighbourhood, is what remains of what used to be a working village built in 1889, belonging to the Company of Wiring and Weaving Carioca. The Architectural Complex that previously presented a coherence and harmony, typical of the working-class towns of the 18th century. XIX, was de characterized over time. The facades and roofs were modified, windows were opened at random, attachments were built without criterion. The house in question had totally lost its initial character, and the first task was to restore its harmony. The program was simple: a house for an artist, able to function occasionally as an exhibition space. The original house has been restored, functioning on the 1st floor as an open-space social and exhibition. In the house extension, constructed from ground, the intimate areas are located and the transition between the original house and this is done by the kitchen, which in turn communicates directly with the patio garden, and can extend outside. On the second floor there is a mezzanine living room, creating variations of heights and allowing the light flow and ventilation of the space.

GOMA is an interdisciplinary network entrepreneurship association focused on social innovation, creative economics and sustainable design, located in the port zone of Rio de Janeiro. The challenge of enabling a project like this, faced with scarce and selfmanaged resources, prompted Estúdio Guanabara to rethink the architect’s role. Faced with a dynamic and inconstant situation, a series of architectural strategies were proposed that fit and also direct the ways of inhabiting and relating in space. As a result, each associate relates to the space with a sense of belonging, guided by premisses established during the co-design processes. Thus, the environments are the expression of the individualities that constitute it, a kind of spatial bricolage, that reflects also the multidisciplinary character of the Association. In this way, Goma presents itself as a laboratory of new forms of relationship between people and entrepreneurs, and new ways of sharing spaces and responsibilities. CLIPPING

For the occupation of the headquarters of the association started in 2013, there was an internal collective financing, capable of kicking off the construction of basic infrastructure, guided by architects.

OCCUPY THE INCOMPLETE

Through the orientation and passage of knowledge of the architect, people spontaneously appropriated space. Construction site and people coexist in the sense that space is in appropriation and all are actors in the its construction.

Together, associates set priorities for investment and work, and are geared to think their workplace, so that it meets their needs and the Association needs.
