1.0 EDITORIAL Wishing to contribute to the development of the regional film industry, in collaboration with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Berlinale Talent Campus, the Sarajevo Film Festival decided to launch the 1st Sarajevo Talent Campus. As a professional development project for prospective producers, actors and directors from the region, the 1st Sarajevo Talent Campus is a new challenge for the Sarajevo Film Festival. Through a versatile and creative programme of workshops, discussions and lectures, young authors and film professionals will adopt new knowledge and establish contacts of assistance in their future careers. The region we live in is at a crossroads of different cultures and religions, it is an area of turbulent historical changes, with emotions often preceding rational thought, and it is no wonder that talent is the principal value young authors posses. We have, however, often seen that numerous talents never moved further, never managed to make their own film or write their own script. That is why the Sarajevo Talent Campus will strive to ensure that the creative impulse of regional film professionals is recognised and that they are given an opportunity to give concrete dimensions to their ideas and visions. It makes me particularly happy to see that a large number of talented young persons and professionals from across the world recognised the nature and quality of the Sarajevo Film Festival and decided to take part in this project. I am certain that the creative approach and new ideas of our talents, interacting with international experts, will contribute to the overall quality of the Campus. I hope that even some of this year’s Campus participants will be able to transfer their experiences onto film reel and will become recognised for their work. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank all those who have worked hard to organise the First Sarajevo Talent Campus, as well as the Berlin International Film Festival and the Berlinale Talent Campus for their support and professional collaboration. This is only the beginning. As early as next year, we will expand the STC programme by several film disciplines. On behalf of the Festival Board and on my personal behalf, I welcome you to the First Sarajevo Talent Campus. Miro Purivatra Director of the Sarajevo Film Festival

2.0 WELCOME NOTE FROM OUR CO-OPERATING PARTNER BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS AND BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Words of welcome We are delighted to officially begin the Sarajevo Talent Campus – the new cooperation between the Sarajevo International Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. As most of you are aware of: very friendly and highly productive ties between our two festivals are already existing, namely between Cine Link and the Berlinale Co-Production Market, as well as between the Sarajevo Teen Arena and Generation, the section of our festival for children and young adults’ films. Of course, these bounds have helped to spark off the idea to form this latest cooperation.
6
We wish our partners - the Talents and Experts - an inspiring, encouraging and joyful Campus during these years Sarajevo Film Festival. As for long term expectations: We are very much looking forward to eventually welcome the Sarajevo Talent Campus participants also in Berlin – with their future projects to be marketed and films to be screened and celebrated. Finally, we would like to thank our partners for their confidence in embarking with us on this exciting journey, which I am convinced, will lead to a fruitful and long-lasting cooperation. Dieter Kosslick Festival Director Berlin International Film Festival
SARAJEVO TALENT CAMPUS # 1 When the Sarajevo Film Festival approached us with the idea to become an official partner of the Talent Campus, virtually everyone embraced the idea instantly. For many reasons: already, there are strong “official” and personal ties between our festivals, on which this new partnership easily was build upon. Beyond this, Berlin - by geographical nature - is proud to label itself as a hub between Eastern and Western Europe, which is also reflected in our festival’s past and present. As the youngest initiative of the Berlinale, the Campus has been eager to fulfil this image with the new life, fresh ideas and an interactive scene of young filmmakers from it’s first edition onwards. Many Talents from all over Eastern Europe have since participated in the Campus, by now quite a few came back to present their films as part of the official programmes. The Campus is a platform to create professional networks and thereby participating in a support system of critical exchange and mutual encouragement. It’s about the appreciation of unique ideas, scripts, aesthetics and personal working styles. This is in a nutshell what the Campus’ philosophy evolves around: meeting likeminded people, who understand the needs and requirements of young filmmakers. Of course, money and access to funds is a prerequisite to make films, but not allowing financial aspects to rule and dominate a filmmakers’ life is an art form and science in itself. These delicate disciplines cannot be taught, since there’s no recipe, no formula – only individual approaches, which have to be invented and constantly developed throughout a filmmakers’ career. Rather than teaching solutions, the Campus strives to make Talents aware of options in a friendly, stimulating, non-competitive environment. Most Talents who attended the Campus in Berlin, New Delhi, Cape Town or Buenos Aires in the past five years – the network consists of 2500 Alumni by today – recounted this particular approach as unique and thereby sustaining beyond the days of the event. Many former Talents even became friends and now work together. As Berlinale Talent Campus, we are very proud of the partnership with the Sarajevo Film Festival. We sincerely hope that the films eventually being made by the Talents will benefit from the Campus experience. In which way? The films will tell and show – and this is, what we are very much looking forward to – as festival organizers and film enthusiasts. We wish you, the Talents of the first Sarajevo Talent Campus, exciting and inspiring days and nights. And we sincerely like to thank our colleagues, especially, Miro and Ivana, for a trustful, friendly and very professional cooperation. Dorothee Wenner Director Berlinale Talent Campus

3.0 SARAJEVO TALENT CAMPUS AT ASU – Academy of Performing Arts Since the first Sarajevo Talent Campus is an educational program intended for gifted young filmmakers from countries of South-eastern Europe, we believe that it is an ideal location for exchanging knowledge, ideas and visions, and engendering creative impulses. The Academy of Performing Arts was established in 1981. and its Drama Studies Department in 1994. An important segment of work of the Academy was the Open Stage OBALA, a cult theatre which focused on student work, but also enabling professional actors, directors and writers to enrich the theatre life of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its concept and direction moved beyond the exact meaning of the word ‘stage’, as it was the place which launched the career of some of the greatest names in Bosnia and Herzegovina film, and it continues to be the place which educates the future champions of the industry.

3 day workshops for Talent Directors.
Please choose which ONE of the two you want to attend over ALL three days:
SANCTA SIMPLICITAS – ALL THE THINGS YOU CAN LEAVE BEHIND…
20
Workshop for Talent Directors with Pjer Žalica Guest: Ademir Kenović MONDAY, 20 / TUESDAY, 21 / WEDNESDAY, 22 // 16:30 to 18:00 Location: ASU 3c Anywhere in the world, a young director will always have to struggle with artistic problems and film language, the lack of infrastructure and funds, and placement in the market. Nevertheless, one of his/her basic problems becomes safeguarding their own identity as an author from many other, more profitable identities of the new world. A professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo and one of the best directors of Bosnia’s new generation (FUSE and DAYS AND HOURS), Žalica will give you practical assignments to point out the possibilities of creating strong author-driven films in extremely simple, “meagre” production conditions. He will be joined by a renowned Bosnian producer and director Ademir Kenović, who has, ever since 1992, practiced this kind of austerity in filmmaking. *Limited number of participants: 14
PUT THE PICTURE WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS
Workshop for Talent Directors with Danis Tanović MONDAY, 20 / TUESDAY, 21 / WEDNESDAY, 22 // 16:30 to 18:00 Location: ASU 3b What lies behind the great success of NO MAN´S LAND? Above scores of awards, the Palm in Cannes, the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film – first and foremost, according to Danis, are the story and the script. After the experience of HELL, based on the original script by Krzysztof Kieslowski, Danis is now preparing a new film based on the novel CIRCUS COLUMBIA by the Bosnian author Ivica Đikić. This workshop will allow its participants to examine the process of preproduction from choosing the story, dramaturgy, chronology and sequence, time-point, and all else that comes before selecting plans, angles and camera movements. *Limited number of participants: 12
3 day workshop for all Talent Producers: A STRANGER AT HOME AND AT HOME AMONG STRANGERS Regional production today
Workshop for Talent Producers with Čedomir Kolar MONDAY, 20 / TUESDAY, 21 / WEDNESDAY, 22 // 16:30 to 18:00 Location: ASU 3a As old regional divisions disappear and the world enters new regions, a new producer is expected to be able to choose, organise and motivate his/her team, balance the state of funds, sponsors, distributors and festivals. Čedomir Kolar has successfully produced local stories from as far as Kyrgyzstan (THE ADOPTED SON by Aktan Abdikalikov) to Bosnia (NO MAN´S LAND by Danis Tanović), Romania (TRAIN OF LIFE by Radu Mihaileanu) and Macedonia (BEFORE THE RAIN by Milče Mančevski). He will analyze how the local can be turned into the universal, both the positive and the negative sides of co-productions, and the financial risks that can plague independent producers in the development of their projects. His workshop will take you on a journey from the sincerity of an artistic venture to the deceptions of lobbying. In the last session, on Wednesday, 22, he will be joined by producer Cat Villiers. *For all Talent Producers
3 day workshops for Talent Actors.
Please choose which ONE of the two you want to attend over ALL three days:
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL…ALL THE WAY FROM AUDITIONS TO FESTIVALS
Workshop for Talent Actors with Leon Lučev MONDAY, 20 / TUESDAY, 21 / WEDNESDAY, 22 // 16:30 to 18:00 Location: ASU Open Stage Through a series of practical exercises, Leon Lučev, one of Croatia’s film stars, who successfully transformed himself into a Bosnian for several roles - particularly in Jasmila Žbanić’s Berlinale laureate GRBAVICA - will focus on how to release one’s creativity, preparations on the set, the development of professionalism on film, the techniques of auditioning, as well as on liberating oneself from personal and local stereotypes and the ability to adapt to other cultures and languages. *Limited number of participants: 15
IT´S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS
Workshop for Talent Actors with Alex Holdridge TUESDAY, 21 / WEDNESDAY, 22 / THURSDAY, 23 // 16:30 to 18:00 Location: ASU Backstage When you google IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS the results are repetitive in praise: “...the film floats with a dream like activity. There is no real physical action, the action is the dialogue. Nothing feels out of place and characters feel like they’re meant to be there.” Alex Holdridge, writer and director, seems to have the right chemistry with actors. Maybe it´s because he tried to walk in their shoes on the other side of the camera. As a matter of fact, when you watch KISS you get the impression that the actors are just “playing” themselves and it is the easiest thing in the world. But is it really? To what extent did the actors contribute to the screenplay in developing dialogue and characters? Find out what is it like to be an actor on the set of a bitterly funny, modern romantic comedy which is all about relationships, on-screen and off-screen. The Talents who wish to attend this workshop should prepare and bring their favourite dialogue scene that involves two characters, and have Alex cast your partner, direct it and shoot it. *Limited number of participants: 14

MONDAY, 20 / 11:30 / ASU Open Stage OPENING LECTURE: ALEXANDER PAYNE / Interviewed by Howard Feinstein
22
Alexander Payne melds humour and poignancy in his films, which dissect America, especially Middle America, with great affection. Most deal with male breakdown, though his protagonists usually rise like phoenixes from the ashes. This is a director who knows how to get excellent performances from his actors. All students in the Talent Campus will learn from the director and co-screenwriter of films such as ABOUT SCHMIDT, SIDEWAYS, and ELECTION - movies that make you laugh and cry, often at the same time - an independent who manages to retain creative control of his work. *For all Talents and accredited guests
MONDAY, 20 / 13:00 – 14:00 / Festival Centre LUNCH BREAK MONDAY, 20 / 15:00 / ASU Open Stage WE´LL FIX IT IN THE EDIT / Lecture by Susan Korda
The workshop will delve into the magic of the editor’s process seeking to inspire producers, writers, directors and editors to discover cinematic solutions to their storytelling problems. The editing room has saved many a film (including BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE CONVERSATION, JAWS and ANNIE HALL), from missing scripts pages, single-shot scenes which throw the rhythm off-track to simply a wafer thin story. The workshop with Susan Korda, teacher at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and writer, director, and editor on documentary and narrative films, will also address the most common stumbling blocks – from the writing of a script all the way to the post – that lead to the lack of coverage, an uninteresting story and boring exposition and rhythm. These inputs and feedback tutorials are meant to convey and deepen the storyteller’s understanding of how to merge filmed moments – shot by shot, scene by scene – into rich cinematic experiences. *For all Talents and accredited guests
MONDAY, 20 / 15:00 / AVANGARD FESTIVAL SQUARE Coffee with Anton Corbijn, Orian Williams

TUESDAY, 21 / 08:30 – 9:15 / Festival Centre BREAKFAST TUESDAY, 21 / 09:45 / Cinema Meeting Point FILMING IN ZONES OF ARMED CONFLICT Discussion panel with: Michael Tucker, Shai Carmeli Pollak, Annie Sundberg, Jasmila Žbanić, Pjer Žalica, Lee Isaac Chung Hosted and moderated by Howard Feinstein This panel is comprised of six directors who have filmed in countries where genocide, ethnic cleansing, and occupation are, or in some cases were, facts of daily life. We will discuss multiple topics related to working in such flashpoints, including situations which are common to them all and those which are distinctive. After presenting short clips of each panelist’s films to be used as points of departure, we must define what differentiates these tense, hostile backdrops from more conventional terrain. Second, we must elaborate on the role of the filmmaker. Is he/she a neutral observer or partial? Should the filmmaker remain a discrete presence, a fly on the wall, or should he/she become an active participant on one side or the other? Does his/her presence, plus the team and equipment each brings along, have an impact on the conflicts at hand? Is what these filmmakers document near or far from the truth, and how does it stand up later on, in the collective memory?
These and many more questions shall receive answers at the panel hosted and moderated by Howard Feinstein, the selector of the Panorama and Panorama Documentary programmes.

Meet and talk with Philippe Bober, producer of some of the best European films, which bear the common denominator of “highly unconventional”. With his film distribution and production company The Coproduction Office, Bober has been involved in the production of recent festival successes such as THE BATTLE IN HEAVEN by Carlos Reygadas, DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU by Cristi Puiu, 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST by Corneliu Poromboiu, IMPORT/EXPORT by Urlich Seidl and YOU, THE LIVING by Roy Anderson, which were afterwards successfully distributed in cinemas and on video - which is quite a success for such “off beat” films.

Lecture for Talent Directors by Dušan Makavejev In our region you can’t easily separate the language of films and the language of dreams from the daily life. It concerns not only unpredictable destinies of people and animals, the cities and trees. It concers the legends, fake political and religious programs, epic songs and daily vulgarities. Speaking of films I see it all as a gold mine.

VIENNA FILM FUND
28
The objectives of the Vienna Film Fund are strengthening and consolidating Vienna as a city of film and audiovisual media in international media and also saving the cultural diversity of Europe. Therefore it is essential for the Vienna Film Fund to help subsidize culture, economy and employment in the film industry of Vienna, Austria and all of Europe. The Vienna Film Fund has a special esteem for the filmers from south-east Europe on account of their creativity and their ability to spot a “special local story” which makes their films so popular. It promotes creative co-productions in order to give Vienna production units a chance of successfully presenting and positioning themselves.
MDM
Besides strengthening the performance of Mitteldeutschland’s companies in the film, television and media industries, MDM pursues the following aims: to increase the funding impact in the region; to continue to give incentives for businesses to move to the region; to promote national and international networking within the industry; and to continue to establish hands-on training and qualification opportunities in the region. MDM also provides subsidies and loans for innovative multimedia products and the development of targeted film marketing concepts. The basic requirement for a successful application is evidence that parts of the Mitteldeutschland region will benefit culturally and most of all economically from the project. Both Vienna Film Fund and MDM are members of Cine Regio, a European network of regional film funds. Our members support short film, documentaries, feature films, TV fiction and multimedia productions. This is your opportunity to learn first hand about the role and system of regional financing of film in Europe.

How to maintain a clear political attitude without becoming a spokesperson of a certain political option? How to incorporate news into a work of art?

FRIDAY, 24 / 16:30 – 18:00 / ASU Open Stage INTERVIEW
Case study with: Steve Buscemi, Gijs van de Westelaken and Thomas Kist INTERVIEW directed by Steve Buscemi, is the first film completed in a project called Triple Theo. Triple Theo’s aim—beyond creating three great films—is to realize the vision of acclaimed international filmmaker Theo van Gogh, whose murder on November 2, 2004 was motivated by political and religious intolerance. Before his death, van Gogh decided to remake three of his Dutch language films in English, in a New York City setting. All three films are intense character dramas created in a dynamic, stripped-down style using innovative, low-budget filmmaking techniques and a dedicated crew of collaborators. Van Gogh’s murder impelled his longtime producer, Gijs van de Westelaken, and his American counterpart, Bruce Weiss, to approach New York filmmakers about bringing the plan to fruition. Director and actor Steve Buscemi was the first to commit to the project. Steve Buscemi, Thomas Kist - director of photography , and producer Gijs van de Westelaken will do a case study of the film analyzing how their working method has evolved over the years by comparing the Dutch and the American version of INTERVIEW. *For all Talents and accredited guests.
