Benicio Del Toro on the Red Carpet

“It’s truly an honor and a humbling experience to be here in this film festival and to receive this award. Someone asked me what makes this award here in Sarajevo different. For me this award represents courage, determination, inclusion and the spirit of going against all odds to bring something special to the others, the spirit of the phoenix. “ Benicio Del Toro “Screening of my film in such a venue for 3,000 people was very moving and a beautiful sort of tribute to my work. It was a very good crowd because I know how respectful of cinema people here are, so it was a very flattering, very moving experience.” Michel Franco “I went to the Open Air Cinema at the end of the screening of my film. I have never seen so many people watching a film. It was very impressive! The screening was very good and the sound was very good. I was very moved... I’m really in love with this city and its people. They are very warm people.” Anna Muylaert “This place is incredible. I like what Benicio Del Toro said in one interview about the importance of this festival because it was born in the middle of a war, when people were looking for some beauty and a better life in the middle of a horror. So I think this is why the festival is so special.” Fernando León de Aranoa

“People are very friendly, very hospitable. For me it’s always about the city, about people, because you relate to and connect with the people. People here are always friendly and they are always smiling. When I go elsewhere in Europe I don’t see many people smiling.” Brillante Mendoza “To be here now, it is stunning at a number of levels. As an Armenian being here; it just has a lot of significance because we’re obviously dealing with a city that is still trying to repair itself. The Ideas of dealing with trauma and dealing with history, reconciling conflicting of views of what may or may not happen that is right up my alley as a filmmaker, so I am really in the ideal festival for my type of work and for my concerns. It seems almost too good to be true.” Atom Egoyan “Sarajevo means a lot to me. Sarajevo always embodied the idea of living together and it’s the right image for a generation of filmmakers who have shown their films here. What had been under attack here is also what has bloomed back to life here. So it’s a great honor to be here.” Deniz Gamze Ergüven “I’ve been here two times for CineLink. I always have very nice feelings being here. I had this feeling that this festival is alive and that it is a part of the city and that the city is a part of the festival. Many times you don’t get such a feeling. It’s always a pleasure and something special to come here.” László Nemes
