CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL TEAMS AND CREWS!
Welcome!
It seems like it was yesterday, or does it? It feels unreal, and yet it is not. I was trying very hard to avoid writing this text, but my younger colleagues, one in particular, our new Head of Industry Maša Marković, did not take a no for an answer. One thing I hope she will allow me to do, is go off the rail and write a personal note, more than anything else. After 20 years at CineLink, I have witnessed that things have surely changed, the regional audiovisual industry is visible on the European and world map, we collaborate between each other more than ever, coproduction is a word all of us underAMRA BAKŠIĆ ČAMO Head of CineLink stand and many of us practice daily. So, what are we supposed to do when celebrating 20 years? Should we go through years and try to remember all the projects, talks, official and unofficial meetings, good parties and not so great ones, count finished films, awards, talk CineLink talks and drama series? Shall we go through stats and figures for all 20, or scroll through old photos? But, it still seems, there is more to do. Times are changing so fast, challenges our industry is facing are pestering and demanding. It seems we need CineLink Industry Days more than ever before. Therefore, we are celebrating this anniversary with our 2022 selection and program that gives us a glimpse of the future, happy to have you with us, dear partners, dear guests, dear friends for another 20 years to come.
MAŠA MARKOVIĆ Head of Industry

From CineLink to Regional Hit Series
Interview with Ankica Tilić Jurić, the producer of The Last Socialist Artefact.
Krešimir Mikić and Rene Bitorajac in The Last Socialist Artefact directed by Dalibor Matanić THE LAST SOCIALIST ARTEFACT deals with disappearanceof the working class and their struggles to survive. What was initial push for you to bring these subjects to the screens? ANKICA TILIĆ JURIĆ: I believe that one of the hottest topics of our times is selfishness and the lack of empathy – the joy of working together, of contributing to the benefit of all is one of the nicest motifs in our series and exactly that motif was my initial push. It is embodied in this story about people deprived of the right to work – the topic that is universal, we see this struggle in many countries in the world. The right to work is very much connected with the self-esteem, dignity and usefulness that we all need, to go through our days. I believe it is very well put in our story and many can relate to that. THE LAST SOCIALIST ARTEFACT was part of the second CineLink Drama edition, back in 2017, and it ended up being a multilateral coproduction –Croatia’s Kinorama, Serbia’s Sense Productions, Slovenia’s Perfo and Finland’s Citizen Jane with participation on Croatian national broadcaster HRT as the principal financier, and Serbia’s RTS as a buyer. This is very rare in the region of South East Europe. With this experience in mind, how do you see the current situation in the region in regards to different production models?
Ankica Tilić Jurić tion set-up, higher production value, a wider choice of the talents – I can only see the benefits in a partnership like we have had on this particular project. And CineLink in 2017 was a really nice opportunity, right after the one we had at Series Mania market. I am glad we came back with the finish’s series to both festivals. THE LAST SOCIALIST ARTEFACT received the Grand Prix for best show at the International Panorama competition - Series Mania. Novine also from Croatia have been quite popular on Netflix, Nevertheless, there is no significant breakthrough to international market in regards to regional content. What do you think are the main reasons for this situation? Can you foresee a change? ATJ: The Last Socialist Artefact really had a fantastic festival life and Novine had wonderful sales, but yes, there is no significant breakthrough to wide market. I believe it is for the same reasons that we struggle with trying to put our films on wide scene – our markets are tiny, even if we join the forces together, our voice is weak and our financial power is minor, compared to the markets we are competing with. The worldwide audience does not know what to expect from a series from our region and the broadcasters struggle with that. Nevertheless, based on our festival experience, I know that there is a wide audience for our series so we should continue trying, and do our very best.
ATJ: I think co-producing is a win-win situation: not only that we reach the wider market, we also secure better producCINE LINK INDUSTRY DAYS MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2022 | 5

Sarajevo Film Festival supports Ukrainian filmmakers and industry professionals! Towards the end of the four-year siege of Sarajevo, in 1995, Obala Art Centar initiated the Sarajevo Film Festival with the aim of helping to reconstruct civil society and retain the cosmopolitan spirit of the city. This legacy obliges us to support our colleagues, Ukrainian filmmakers and industry professionals and give them a platform for developing and presenting their work in these challenging times for the entire community. Our partner in this project is Ukrainian institute, a public institution affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Its mission is to strengthen Ukraine’s international standing through the means of cultural diplomacy. The Institute facilitates international connections between people and institutions and creates opportunities for Ukraine to interact and cooperate with the world. This year, Sarajevo Film Festival decided to include Ukraine in its official programmes, thus expressing solidarity with Ukrainian people and filmmakers during the Russian inva-
sion. The Festival also has committed to giving support to Ukrainian colleagues by offering a platform for the development of their work and giving them the opportunity to work in a safe environment. Sarajevo Film Film Festival in collaboration with Ukrainian Institute has selected two projects for a residency program for filmmakers from Ukraine, who will work on their development or post-production projects in Sarajevo in cooperation with leading Bosnian and international experts from the world of film. Sarajevo Film Festival has also welcomed film professionals Kateryna Ianuk and Marina Shukh who have been part of the Sarajevo Film Festival Team since April. Supporting Ukrainian Institute’s mission to make voices of Ukrainian filmmakers and film professionals heard internationally, we are organizing a panel discussion on producing during the war as a part of CineLink Talks, conference part of CineLink Industry Days.

Voices from the workshop CineLink Co-Production Market and CineLink Drama do not only take place over a few days in August – they are programmes for which participants are invited to attend a workshop prior, to develop their projects and prepare for the market, with the help of experienced tutors. Here are some impressions from this year’s participants.
THANASSIS NEOFOTISTOS
IRIS ELEZI
I participated in Sarajevo Script station 2016 and CineLink 2022 with my feature film THE BOY WITH THE LIGHT BLUE EYES. Both my experiences were great, on the stage that my project was. In the Script Station, communicating my story and script with experts from around the world was a very helpful step to understand what I really wanted to say with my film and found the core of my story. It is no coincidence that we changed the title after that. On the other hand with CineLink I expect and I already feel the focus on the project, as we are going for shootings next year, and its essential to find the best collaborators in one of the most important meeting points of the film industry!
Participating on the Cinelink workshop couldn’t come at a better time for the development of my upcoming feature film, WE ALL DIE NAKED, since at times it’s so easy to ‘drawn’ within the writing process, and even your own country’s frameworks. Just as it did in the past with my debut film BOTA, Cinelink again opened up incredible opportunities thanks to the fantastic feedback we got through the script consultation sessions, and especially in stregthening our production strategy. Above all, it was fruitfull to be there with our producer Enea Gramo to explore together the best routes to bring the film to the big screeen. What makes the whole experience so gratifying is the top level of the professionals we met and were mentored by, who had knowledge of our country’s cinema and gracefully empowered our journey.

True Stories Market The True Stories Market is dedicated to improving dialogue among the countries of former Yugoslavia, which are faced with deep and far-reaching consequences of the aftermath of past conflicts. The market presents four cases selected from the archives of key organisations that work to document the Yugoslav Wars to film and TV professionals. This serves as an open source for filmmakers to weave stories that can address larger audiences, with all the urgency and power that cinema has to offer. After the festival, in order to facilitate the transition of these stories from market to screen, an open call invites filmmakers to apply to execute a project inspired by one of the cases highlighted by the market. Trust Me, I’m a Documentary Filmmaker! Today documentary films have the power to make sense of a complex world, deliver knowledge and emotion, uncover and fight injustice, open the eyes of the audience towards essential issues. They reach a large audience. With great power comes great responsibility. How do we deliver fact-based stories in the fake-news era? How do we gain, as opposed to lose, the trust of viewers? Short Films: How Can We Keep Making Them?
How Contemporary Cinema Portrays Those Who Had to Flee?
More than a filmmaker’s calling card, short films are a format of choice for many audiences online. For the filmmakers, shorts are a way to show artistic choices and skills. They are discovery portals into an artists’ vision while offering the makers a way to network and approach the industry with a less risky option in terms of budget. But they are not getting any easier to finance, and distribution of shorts seems overflooded. Our panelists will share their vision about how to make short films that can stand out. How to finance, craft and showcase them and what are the advantages of making shorts in the current landscape
Today, one in every 88 people in the world is forcibly displaced. This unfortunate situation requires attention, not only from political actors. By tapping into the heart of the purpose-drive, socially engaged film, questions arise: How can we provoke compassion? How can we raise the sense of individual responsibility in all of us – creators and viewers?

True Stories Market The True Stories Market is dedicated to improving dialogue among the countries of former Yugoslavia, which are faced with deep and far-reaching consequences of the aftermath of past conflicts. . The market presents four cases selected from the archives of key organisations that work to document the Yugoslav Wars to film and TV professionals. This serves as an open source for filmmakers to weave stories that can address larger audiences, with all the urgency and power that cinema has to offer. After the festival, in order to facilitate the transition of these stories from market to screen, an open call invites filmmakers to apply to execute a project inspired by one of the cases highlighted by the market, and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Dialogue Southeast Europe will award the winning filmmaker with 10000€.
DEPTHS OF VELEBIT FILIP ŠKILJAN (42) and MILAN RADANOVIĆ (45) are historians from Zagreb. The remains of the Ustasha death camp are hidden in the hills of Velebit. Filip and Milan are trying to find these remains, once and for all, while IVO GOLDSTEIN (64) reads a letter that arrived to the recipient (his father) 64 years later. The film DEPTHS OF VELEBIT deals with the fate of the victims of fascism and the continuous culture of forgetting and erasure from the collective memory of everything that was once a place of union, that is, anti-fascism, which, at its core value, aimed to unite differences. Today these differences present the basis for new killing grounds. Mladen Ivanović
THE STORY OF DŽENITA MULABDIĆ THE STORY OF DŽENITA MULABDIĆ is the story of 30 years of impunity for the crimes of paramilitary units in Bijeljina. MULABDIĆ watched, with her own eyes, the brutal crimes of the Serbian Volunteer Guard, called Akranovci, in Bijeljina. Those crimes marked the beginning of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in which 100,000 people were killed. Her husband was killed before her eyes, and she also saw some of the other murders. Today, the street where she watched those crimes is named Street of Serbian Voluntary Guard. She testified about her experiences to investigators, but no one was ever convicted of her husband’s murder. “It hurts me that no one ever answered for this crime”, is her message. BIRN BiH
THE STORY OF EŠEF DŽANANOVIĆ EŠEF DŽANANOVIĆ survived concentration camps Keraterm, Trnopolje and Omarska, witnessing countless murders and beatings. In the camp, he learned that his family had been killed. He lost five family members, sons Alen and Ajdin aged four and nine, a sister aged 17, his wife aged 32 and his mother. Today, he is fighting for the truth and for building a monument to the murdered children. The authorities of the city of Prijedor are preventing him from doing this. “I am most sorry that my neighbours all the way to Prijedor know about my family, my sons, they all know who killed them, where they are hidden, but unfortunately I did not find the remains”, is his message. THE BALKAN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING NETWORK (BIRN) is a regional network of non-governmen/aorganisations that promote freedom of speech, human rights, and democratic values in Southeast Europe. BIRN has developed a specific network structure that includes local independent organisations gathered around an umbrella organisation – Balkan Investigative Regional Reporting Network (BIRN Hub) – a structure that has the advantage of combining local, nation-based expertise with unique regional co-operation.
A HERO FROM THE ARENA For those whose loved ones were killed or disappeared during the Second World War in Yugoslavia, war wounds did not stop in 1945. In that less visible war after the war, in the struggle to find the missing and reunite families Marino Zurli, a discreet hero of great deeds, also participated. This Croatian writer and journalist of Arena has been publishing stories and photos about the missing for ten years, putting together separated families, finding lost people and restoring joy to the hearts of those who believed that their loved ones will never appear again. In his lifetime, Marino Zurli managed to connect 150 families. This is a story about him. NEXT GAME is a group of writers, directors, graphic / audio and game designers, programmers, brand strategists, marketing and advertising experts – that work together to create powerful stories.

Mariupol Exhibition MSTYSLAV CHERNOV is a Ukrainian multi-award winning visual journalist and writer born in the eastern Ukraine in 1985. He started his journalistic career in Kharkiv, working for Ukrainian media outlets Mediaport, Ukrainian news, Unian. For the past eight years, he has been working on all major stories in Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Gaza, and Europe as a freelance and later as a staff journalist for Associated Press. His photos were published by the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Le Monde, Die Zeit, BBC, Forbes, Vice News, Wall Street Journal, Dailymail, Deutsche Welle, Pulitzer Centre, Cosmos photo agency, Business Insider, Forbes Ukraine. The videos were aired on BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, EuroNews, Sky News, Fox News, Rai 24 and many more.
EVGENIY MALOLETKA is a Ukrainian freelance photojournalist based in Kiev, Ukraine, originally from the city of Berdyansk, the Zaporizhya region in the eastern Ukraine. Before trying his hand at other things, he discovered photojournalism. Maloletka started his career in 2009 as a staff photographer for local news agencies UNIAN and PHL. Maloletka was deeply involved in the coverage of the Ukrainian revolution from the beginning before moving to cover the conflicts in Crimea and eastern Ukraine for various international media. Mr Maloletka graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 2010 with a degree in electronics. In 2015, he was selected to participate in the Eddie Adams Workshop in New York. His work was published in numerous prominent media: TIME, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Newsweek, The Independent, El Pais, The Guardian, The Telegraph and others.
The dead were largely abandoned in the streets. There were no funerals. No memorials. No public gatherings to mourn those killed by Russia’s relentless attacks on the port city that had become a symbol of Ukraine’s ferocious resistance. It was too dangerous. Instead, authorities collected the bodies in a truck as best they could and buried them in narrow trenches dug into the frozen late-winter earth of Mariupol. The mass grave trenches told the story of a city under siege. There was the 18-month-old hit by shrapnel; the 16-year-old killed by an explosion during a soccer game; the girl no older than 6 who was rushed to a hospital with bloody pyjamas decorated with cartoon unicorns. There was the woman wrapped in a bedsheet, her legs neatly bound at the ankles with a scrap of white fabric. Workers tossed all of them into the trenches as fast as they could, moving quickly to get back to shelter before the next round of shelling. The world would have seen none of this, would have seen next to nothing at all from Mariupol as the siege settled in, if it wasn’t for Mstyslav Chernov and Evgeniy Maloletka, the Associated Press team who raced into the city when the invasion began and stayed long after it had become one of the most dangerous places on Earth. For more than two weeks, they were the only international media in the city, and the only journalists able to transmit video and still photos to the outside world. They were there
when that young girl with unicorn pyjamas was rushed into the hospital. They were there after the maternity hospital was attacked, and for countless airstrikes that pulverised the city. They were there when gunmen began stalking the city in search of those who could prove Russia’s narrative to be false. Moscow hated their work. The Russian embassy in London tweeted images of AP photos with the word FAKE over them in red text. A top Russian diplomat held up copies of photos from the maternity hospital at a U.N. Security Council meeting, insisting they were phoney. Eventually, the team were urged to leave. If they catch you, they will get you on camera and they will make you say that everything you filmed is a lie, a policeman told the pair. All your efforts and everything you have done in Mariupol will be in vain. It was terrible to leave. They knew that once they were gone, there would be almost no independent reporting from inside the city. But they felt they had no choice. So they left, slipping away on a day when thousands of civilians were fleeing the city, passing roadblock after Russian roadblock. Their work, and the people who they met, speak for the agony of Mariupol. Like the doctor who tried to save the life of the pyjama-clad little girl. As he pumped oxygen into her, he looked straight into the AP camera. Show this to Putin, he stormed with expletive-laced fury. The eyes of this child and crying doctors.
