Stari i mladi, imovina i dugovi
4 I HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD 2019
Zbog toga trebamo filmove i filmske festivale. Mlada generacija treba vidjeti svijet koji će naslijediti. Imovinu i dugove.
Old and young, assets and debts
E The theme of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival Human Rights Day – “the young shall inherit the world” – is close to my heart. If only because my wife and I have three daughters in their twenties, who indeed are inheriting today’s world.
But these critical ladies hesitate whether to call the inheritance an asset or a debt. I would say an asset. Look at wondrous nature Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those paradises in this world – and look at the richness of mankind’s cultural heritage. But I am biased. I belong to the generation that has kept the world in its hands and in time is going to give it over to the young generation. Have we taken care well enough of our tiny, precious globe? I am not sure. At least our daughters do tell us that what I call an asset to them very much looks like a debt. They are not to blame. I vividly remember that, when I was a child, the Club of Rome warned us that we were on our way to depleting the resources of the earth. As a ten years old boy, I was frightened by this message. My dreams of a happy life were suddenly shaken by the expectation of global collapse.
The earth, fortunately, showed more resilience than the Club of Rome predicted, it granted me my happy years. But yes, we have been careless. We have neglected climate change, promoted ruthless economic development and lazily dumped our waste in air, water and soil. Our neglect was broader than just the physical environment. Human rights are no less part of our precious heritage. Over the past decades, we witnessed the Bosnian war, the genocide in Srebrenica, the atrocious war in Syria. We hoped for paradise when 40 years ago central Europe was liberated, but now we see that freedom and rule of law are again under pressure. South Africa became a democracy, but equality for all citizens is still a dream. We rejoiced in the spectacular rise of standards of living in many parts of the world, but, contrary to what we thought, wealth is no guarantee for freedom. We need more powerful means to get this message across than just words. Nothing has a deeper impact than the visual image. That is why we need films and film festivals. To let the young generation see with their eyes the world they shall inherit. The assets and the debts.

Women rule the documentary scene in our region
E Out of 16 films, 10 are made by female directors!
This year´s selection brings 16 strong, somewhat disturbing films that deal with global topics told well through compelling personal stories of the protagonists. From contemplation on the balance within the bee population to corruption in top sports and Olympics, from a woman ex-assassin to atomic energy in local gardening, from the top-notch music world to the struggle of underprivileged music talents, we bring high-quality documentaries whose makers worked hard in finding their personal cinematic expression. There are not so many film directors from Roma communities and we are proud to present to you the latest film of a female Roma director whose documentary mirrors the turbulent life of great jazz talent from her own community. In many ways, our documentary selection reflects reality, measuring the state of Europe at this moment; from the struggle to produce bio-food in Greece to female folk theatre of village artists embracing Shakespeare within their own life, from an Azeri contemplative intimate
story of a mother and son to the struggle of an unemployed woman in Croatia who explores all her talents in order to survive. Many female characters are being depicted in our films as if women have more to say or are more inclined to openly share. Proudly, we are pointing out that we have in our selection many female directors. Out of 16 films, 10 are directed or co-directed by women. Hurray for strong talented She directors from the region. Hurray for the debut directors too. More than half of our selection is a first short or featurelength doc work. We host all of our directors at the screenings and keep debating about each of these engaging movies at our thought-provoking Docu Corner. This debate platform is organized in collaboration with the Youth Initiative for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina and 80 young people, socially and politically conscious and aware of the necessity to be proactive, will gather every day at the Docu Corner and lead in-depth debates on each of our Competition films. They will also select some of the films to be presented in Paris at the Sarajevo sur Seine festival in Spring. Welcome to join us! Medena zemlja / Honeyland North Macedonia, 2019, Colour, 85 min, Turkish Režija / Director: Ljubomir Stefanov, Tamara Kotevska Scenarij / Screenplay: Ljubomir Stefanov, Tamara Kotevska
Jednoga dana, jedna nomadska porodica naseli se uz Hatidžin dom, a buka motora njihovih vozila, dreka njihovo sedmero djece i 150 goveda remeti spokoj Hatidžinog kraljevstva. Međutim, Hatidža ih prijateljski dočekuje i bez zadrške s njima dijeli svoje pčelarske savjete, naklonost i svoju specijalnu rakiju. Hussein, glava nomadske porodice, ipak donosi niz odluka koje bi zauvijek mogle uništiti Hatidžin način života.
E In a deserted Macedonian village, 50-something Hatidze trudges up a hillside to check her bee colonies nestled in the rocks. Serenading them with a secret chant, she gently manœuvres the honeycomb without netting or gloves. Back at her homestead, Hatidze tends to her handmade hives and her bedridden mother, occasionally heading to the capital to sell her wares. One day, an itinerant family installs itself next door, and Hatidze’s peaceful kingdom gives way to roaring engines, seven shrieking children, and 150 head of cattle. Yet Hatidze welcomes the camaraderie, and holds nothing back – not her tried-and-true beekeeping advice, not her affection, not her special brandy. But soon Hussein, the itinerant family’s patriarch, makes a series of decisions that could destroy Hatidze’s way of life forever.

E PALACE FOR THE PEOPLE tells the stories of the most emblematic five buildings of socialist times, which are highly representative of the period and which witnessed the historical turbulence of Eastern Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The National Palace of Culture in Sofia; Moscow State University; the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest; the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade; and the Palace of the Republic in Berlin are unique architectural creatures, conceived of wiht a lot of courage and a little bit of lunacy to remind the people of both an ultimate power and a brighter future. They were the most grandiose enterprises in a time when collective good was the primary state policy. Now that socialism is over, it is time to go back and reveal the hidden secrets of these edifices.

E This documentary depicts the bitter poetry of life of two grannies living isolated lives in the hills of Eastern Bosnia. The film emphasises the intangibility of cultural heritage, through the presentation of chants and rituals for taming adverse weather, hail, and storms. Nature is the entity these women “speak”, listen to and respect. In the daily activities they perform, the excellence and distress of these displays is revealed and revived. The action of the film is made up of everyday life in the countryside, which shows the caring and intimacy of the women, both in their mutual relations, and in their relationship to nature.
E Sandra Jurak worked for a sports news desk and as a personal assistant to a showbiz celebrity. By chance, she loses both jobs and must “return home” to her mother’s small flat in the neighbourhood she left 30 years ago. Everyone has to pay the bills, so Sandra accepts all kinds of work: she cleans other peoples’ flats, takes care of the building, and cares for an elderly woman. However, Sandra’s greatest dream is to earn money as a musician. She has never made use of her celebrity connections, nor of all the time she has spent in recording studios. Time has flown by; Sandra is now 50 years old and 20 kilos overweight, so becoming “famous” appears to be mission: impossible – but Sandra hopes it is never too late.

Paradajz upoznaje Wagnera / When Tomatoes Met Wagner Greece, 2019, Colour, 72 min, Greek, English, French Režija / Director: Marianna Economou Scenarij / Screenplay: Marinna Economou
E Elias, a small farming village in central Greece, is dying out. But two cousins team up with the village grannies to cultivate tomatoes. With a little help from Wagner’s music, the villagers export their little jars with organic tomato recipes across the world. WHEN TOMATOES MET WAGNER follows the protagonists of this unlikely story as they struggle to make their dream come true. Humorous and bittersweet, this surreal story speaks to us about the importance of reinventing oneself in times of crisis, and of the power of human relationships.

E In an attempt to answer the question of whether home is a specific place or everything we carry inside ourselves, the filmmaker goes on a search for a single shot of her parents’ home, in which she never lived. In the process, she collects a wealth of shots and creates a memory of the city where that house is located, the city that was home to her parents and thousands of other people who were forced to flee due to war in the 1990s, and from where people continue to flee today due to neglect and a broken economy.

Kraljica Lear / Queen Lear Turkey, 2019, Colour, 84 min, Turkish Režija / Director: Pelin Esmer Scenarij / Screenplay: Pelin Esmer
E Sixteen years ago, a handful of peasant women from the mountains of southern Turkey formed a theatre group, which later became the subject of the documentary THE PLAY. The women acted out their own life stories in the village, and the play changed their lives. Now, they take to the road with an adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, travelling on the dusty and risky roads to remote, forgotten villages in the mountains of Turkey that are hardly reached by drinking water. The play delicately becomes Queen Lear in the hands of the group.

Nepokretna, u kući u kojoj vrijeme protiče u ritmu zvukova seoskog života u Azerbejdžanu, majka čeka svoga sina. Kada dođe, razgovaraju o egzistencijalnim pitanjima i zabrinjavajućim, zbunjujućim vijestima izdaleka.

E Immobile in a home in which the sands of time fall to the rhythm of rural Azerbaijani sounds, a mother waits for her son. When he arrives, their conversations circle around existential questions and news from afar, troubling and cryptic. Unrest cloaks the world outside. Mother and son grow closer, silence melts into words, and life springs up between them. The son leaves, and winter settles upon the forever-outdated house, in which temporalities blur and past and present beat to the rhythm of the same clock.

E The main role in this documentary film belongs to Sarajevo, not just as a city but as a metaphor for our times, when we are learning to live together, side by side, respectful of all our differences. A SMALL DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT 3 LETTERS presents, from the point of view of the composer, the birth and a few initial performances of a concert for three violins and a symphony orchestra. Artists appearing in the film come from all parts of the world and from the three Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The three religions that are the wealth of Sarajevo and part of its tragic destiny.

Taj novi zvuk privlači pažnju proslavljenog saksofoniste Tima Riesa te njih dvojica počinju nastupati zajedno. József sanja da napusti svoj monotoni život i ostvari uspjeh u domovini jazza – Americi. 11.

upravo mladi. Nepravda na koju kolektiviteti nerijetko pristaju šutke, mlade generacije mogu trpjeti neko vrijeme. No do određenog limita.
11th Human Rights Day
E Under the auspices of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the 2019 Sarajevo Film Festival presents its eleventh consecutive Human Rights Day programme, including a screening on 19 August of Rehad Desai’s EVERYTHING MUST FALL. The screening takes place at Multiplex Cinema City in Sarajevo, and will be followed by a panel discussion around the topic “The young shall inherit the world – an idea that does not want to be just a myth”. The panel will be moderated by journalist and director Robert Zuber.
The young shall inherit the world – an idea that does not want to be just a myth “The young shall inherit the world” is a proverb equally shared by and used as a catch phrase by the people across the generations in the Balkans, that is in the territory of former Yugoslavia. However, “the old” – who decide about the lives of the young – seldom ask “the young” for their opinion on anything. In contrast, life’s great teacher – history – shows us that young people are the driving force behind
most social change. The younger generations can tolerate injustice for only a very short time and only up to a limit, regardless of whether this unfairness manifests itself in school rules or social norms. The film screening in the Human Rights Day programme portrays the youth protest sparked by tuition – in Croatia, it was provoked by curricular reform; in Serbia, it was an expression of desire for a democratic change; in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the hunger for rights yet to be won. Every time we think the “young people” were placated by a few platitudes or empty on-camera statements, they surprise us. Like the sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, they remind us of our own past idealism. It is not a myth. The young shall inherit the world, and this is likely the only possible outcome of evolution. The question remains: As people who share a society with our young, are we going to support and embrace the energy of youth that has historically made the world a better place?

Sve mora pasti / Everything Must Fall South Africa, Netherlands, Belgium, 2018, Colour, 85 min, English Režija / Director: Rehad Desai Scenarij / Screenplay: Rehad Desai
O pokretu pričaju četiri studentska lidera i vicekancelar njihovog univerziteta Adam Habib, ljevičar i nekadašnji aktivista studentskog pokreta protiv aparthejda.
22 I HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD 2019
E An unflinching look at the #FeesMustFall student movement that burst onto the South African political landscape in 2015 to protest the high cost of education. The story is told by four student leaders at Wits University and their vicechancellor, Adam Habib, a left-wing, former antiapartheid student activist. When Habib’s efforts to contain the protest fail, he brings 1,000 police officers onto the university campus. Blending dramatic unfolding action with a multi-protagonist narrative, much of the film’s drama lies in the internal struggles the activists experience around the weight of leadership. Threaded through the film is a pulse of anticipation, shared across the generational divide, that somehow these young people have reached a breaking point, and will not back down until they achieve the kind of social transformation previous generations had longago given up on.

YIHR BH / DocuCorner
Ove produktivne diskusije inspirišu mlade aktiviste/ ce o novim načinima i metodama kako doprinijeti ovim važnim i relevantnim temama kroz konkretne akcije.
24 I HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD 2019
ljudi.
E Participation at Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) is an activity that had become a traditional and it is ongoing for nine years. Young activists have the chance to participate at Human Rights Program at SFF and after the screening, at DocuCorner, to discuss the main issues of the shown film with their colleagues anauthors. In addition, the movies are triggering discussion about basic knowledge of human rights standards, existing institutional mechanisms for citizens’ rights protection and topics related to the facing the past and transitional justice. Those productive discussions are inspiring young activists to search and apply the new ways of contributing to those important and relevant topics through tangible actions. Goals:The project’s purpose is to (1) foster the trust between young people from different ethnic communities, ultimately leading to a sustainable and networked group of activists in BiH integrated into the YIHR BH structure; and (2) connect young people from throughout BiH with their peers in Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia, brokering direct dialog between ethnically divided young people on regional scale. Since two years ago, young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region also have an opportunity to share their experiences and knowledg with young
people from entire Europe who are also taking part in this program. It is important to emphasize importance of such gathering of young people, particularly from the different parts of BiH – this certainly represents a first step towards breaking the prejudice among young people of different national backgrounds, but also building solidarity and trust among them, which is pre-condition for continuous joint activities that YIHR BH conducts before and after SFFOn the other side, a regional dimension of SFF is also reflected through breaking prejudices among young people from different countries. Participation at SFF provides them an opportunity to exchange their experiences, define their similarities, to discuss “taboo” topics among themselves (e.g. minorities, LGTBQ population, identities) and to realize that there are more common things that connect them, rather to separate them).Through these nine years of cooperation,YIHR BH express its gratittude to Swiss Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina as they had recognized importance of such approach in the work with young people. YIHR BH is proud to be a part of the SFF family and is looking forward to continuing its work with young people from around Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balkan region and Europe.
