Poldark County

tin mines & shorelines...

Poldark has certainly put Cornwall under the spotlight. The TV series has been very popular, and viewers soon started to realise that Ross Poldark (Aiden Turner) wasn’t the only thing on the screen which was easy on the eye. Poldark has given Cornwall a huge tourism boost, with visitors flocking down to explore the coastline that has appeared in the show. Locations to see include: Porthcurno Visitors will be blown over by this beach’s white sand and turquoise sea – you could almost be in the Caribbean. This beach features in the dream sequence where Demelza and Ross find themselves walking on a sunny day. You can recreate it by going on a romantic stroll yourself. St Agnes Head Cornwall’s historic engine houses perch like jewels on the beautiful Cornish coastline. In the show this backdrop is Nampara Valley. Charlestown Near to St

Austell,

this

historic

harbour is famed for its tall ships. In the programme, it features as the maritime port of Truro and Falmouth. Holywell Bay An expansive beach with golden sand and lots of dunes to explore. The Bay’s iconic Gull Rock is the backdrop to some scenes in series two. Kynance Cove This a must-see in Cornwall with its serpentine rock-towers, pristine white sand and beautiful blue waters; it features as Poldark’s Nampara. There are many caves to explore at low tide. Gwennap Head Near to Porthgwarra, and Porthcurno sits Gwennap Head. A dramatic headland with a craggy coastline and crystal clear waters below. It features in Poldark several times. Park Head, near Porthcothan The cliff tops here have amazing views across the pointed rock stacks of Bedruthan Steps, a famous view on Cornwall’s dramatic north coast. This is used as the backdrop for Ross on horseback galloping across the headland. 7

Cornwall’s

West Coast The furthest west you can get in the UK, this area of Cornwall has rugged coastline and far reaching Atlantic vistas. St Ives is best-known for its narrow streets, artist’s studios and galleries and it’s well worth taking the prettiest train ride in the UK to get there from St Erth station. Drive further along the coast to explore Zennor, St Just

and Sennen Cove on the way to Land’s End. The larger town of Penzance offers lots of local crafts, boutique shopping and a real local Cornish ambiance and you can explore Mousehole harbour and nearby Newlyn fishing quay. Pop across the causeway at Marazion for a visit to St Michael’s Mount.

Polmanter Touring Park Location - St Ives

Set in the beautiful countryside overlooking St Ives, Polmanter combines award-winning facilities with a warm Cornish welcome. Polmanter Touring Park has been run by our family, the Osbornes, for almost fifty years. This experience, along with our own love of camping, means that we know about all those little touches that make a holiday extra enjoyable - and effortless. Whether you’ve spent every summer under canvas, or are just gently introducing your young family to the fun of camping, you can create your ideal holiday at Polmanter. Are you looking for a pitch with its own fantastic facilities, or do you like to escape from modern trappings when you go camping? Either way,

there’s a variety of pitches for you to choose from and all the pitches have something in common – views across the Atlantic and the hills above St Ives, and that glorious fresh Cornish air... Lying on the beach, swimming in the sea, enjoying long lazy lunches... We all know how to unwind on holiday. However there’s an extra feeling of relaxation that comes from knowing that everything’s taken care of – and that’s what we aim to give our visitors. Polmanter makes a wonderful base to discover West Cornwall and although we feel wonderfully remote and rural, the A30 is just a ten-minute drive away. However, you can easily leave your car behind at Polmanter and explore by bus, rail, bike or foot.

St Ives Bay Holiday Park Location - Hayle

Stunning St Ives Bay Holiday Park is in sand dunes with private access to a 3 mile sandy beach. We offer a huge choice of Caravans, Chalets, camping pitches, and camping pods. Many have superb sea views of St Ives or Godrevy lighthouse. The beach has an RNLI Lifeguard station in front of the park which is open from Whit to the August bank holiday. There are two bars on site one offers a range of entertainment for adults and children whilst the other is a quieter sea view bar incorporating the Bay bistro with good food at reasonable prices. Our large indoor pool is part of the same complex.

Special offers for couples and young families allow this type of party to upgrade to bigger and better units for reasonable rates. Many caravans and chalets have been substantially upgraded in recent years, and our caravans now include many wooden lodge style units which are more comfortable than traditional caravans. St Ives is across the bay and is a six mile drive. The park is less than 1 km from the A30 and so is an ideal base for exploring Cornwall. There is a wealth of information and pictures about us on Facebook and on Tripadvisor. We hope to welcome you!

Packed with Character

Art and Culture...

It’s no surprise that Cornwall has officially been recognised as having its own culture, language and identity by giving the Cornish people “national minority” status. Visitors can’t help but be swept up in the striking and passionate strength of character exuded by this county and its residents. From the moment you pass the border and are welcomed in both English and Cornish, you know you’re in for a cultural cacophony and it’s a whole lot of fun soaking it up. A good place to start are the artisitic hubs of St Ives and Newlyn where two of the country’s most important art movements began. It’s not hard to see why these picturesque harbour towns were the source of such inspiration and cultural vibrancy. Take a few photos and you’ll be able to see the “quality of light” which has long been so appealing to artists and photographers alike.

Explore the exhibitions big and small, from sculptures and paintings to photography and pottery. Cornwall boasts its own Tate Gallery at St Ives but most towns, villages and rural roads in between offer wonderful galleries and local workshops to discover and enjoy. Besides artists, poets and writers have all loved Cornwall including C h a r l e s Dickens, Lord T e n n y s o n , John Hardy, R o s a m u n d e Pilcher, Daphne Du Maurier and Sir John Betjeman. They’ve all left their mark for tourists to find, whether it’s the Victorian hotel used for film adaptations (Pilcher), the lonely gravestone in a beautiful beach-side church (Betjeman) or an historic coaching inn visited by those in search of smuggling folkore (Du Maurier).

This is cultural

Cornwall

The Cornish love a chance to put on a show too which may be why one lady was so determined to carve out the most spectacular theatre in the world, The Minack Theatre in Porthcurno. You might be forgiven for thinking the amiptheatre carved out of solid granite is an ancient Roman landmark but perhaps more impressively the theatre was built by Shakespeare fan Rowena Cade from 1931 until she died in 1983. Come to tread the boards and explore the gardens or book to see a play performed with the ocean as the backdrop. If you’re in town in May, make sure

you don’t miss a true Cornish knees up at Padtsow’s ‘Obby ‘Oss or Helford’s Flora Day. They are two of the most famous Cornish Celtic festivals and both involve lots of singing, dancing, drinking and merriment. But the rest of the calendar is packed too with music a huge part of the cultural landscape, from Pop and Rock at Boardmasters to Bluegrass and Jazz Festivals as well as “eclectic highenergy tunes” at Looe Music Festival, you’d be hard-pushed not to find something for your tastes. So make sure you go beyond the beaches and discover a Cornwall you didn’t know existed.

Cornwall’s

North Coast The North coast of Cornwall is renowned for its rugged cliffs and spectacular seascapes, hidden inlets, coves and awesome ‘blowholes’ created by surging tides. Surfing is the sport of choice from the beaches of Perranporth, Holywell Bay, Newquay and Watergate with major surfing competitions and

festivals taking place at either end of the summer. Pilot Gig Rowing is a must-see too with competitions throughout the season culminating in the World Championship in late April. You’ll also find the thrilling spectacle of the annual Polo on the Beach at Watergate in May and the Newquay

...little people, big demands

Babies & Toddlers

They may be tiny but if you’ve got babies and toddlers in tow, you know their needs are the biggest and most important of all. A happy bubba means happy parents and that means a happy holiday for all so we’ve teamed up with local mums for some insider advice to avoid the tantrums – kids and adults alike! Check before you go – Find out if travel cots and cot sides can be provided before you go – most places offer them for hire. It’s always good to know about bathroom facilities too so you can plan bedtime routines. There are also some fantastic activities designed especially for under 3s (including newborns) but it might take a bit of uncovering so you know what’s on where and what days. Some holiday parks offer little tots swim sessions (for guests or nonguests) which mean a family swim session is splash-tastic and good value. Search online or find a local Mums’

group to find out about music-based groups, baby yoga, arts and crafts, buggy bootcamps, toddler dance and nursery rhyme clubs too. Call beforehand to check about one-off holiday spaces. Don’t worry about all their toys – Sure, their favourite blanket or teddy is a must and scooters or trikes will be a great asset but otherwise you’ll be fine. Lots of cafes and tourist hotspots are baby-friendly with toy-boxes and areas to keep little one amused. Best of all, in Cornwall, your kids will love toys that are free... The sand and the waves and the wind. For a few pennies, pick up a bucket and spade plus maybe a ball and little windmill and you’ll have them entertained for hours on our wonderful coastline.Sure, you’ll find half the beach in their nappy after and you’ll be finding grains in the car for the rest of the year but there’s nothing quite as special as baby’s first trip to the beach!

Credit: Hendra Holiday Park

A few must-brings – Even if you’re not blessed with sunny weather, the beaches still offer hours of fun. Bring mobile-tots their own overalls and wellies and they won’t mind if it’s not blazing. Sand is just so FUN! And so is jumping the waves. Sometimes, hot days can be harder on young families so bring or buy a sun tent, hats and lots of suncream to keep you and all the family safe and limit the time on the beach to either side of the hottest time of day. There’s plenty to do in the meantime (see below). For younger babies, enjoy walking them to sleep on stunning walks and the amazing, Cornish air will almost certainly help them sleep well (no guarantees though)! Lots to entertain and stimulate –

being the UK’s number one holiday destination has some serious advantages to home – and that’s the variety of fantastic attractions around every corner. Dozens of soft play areas, playgrounds, petting farms, zoos and animal sanctuaries mean there’s fun to be had for everyone. Most offer activities for children of all ages. For the very young, that means more cuddles with mummy and daddy whilst older siblings are happily entertained!

We can’t wait to meet your little ones...

...and see their sunny smiles!

Live the legends of

Myths & Mystery

Cornwall is a place of mystery, legend and intrigue. From King Arthur and his knights to the infamous Beast of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall is more than meets the eye. There is something special in the air here. At Tintagel, you can walk the same path as knights of tales olde and walk around the ruins of the most famous of castles. On Bodmin Moor, peer into Dozmary Pool to catch a glimpse of Excalibur where rumour has it, the sword was thrown by Sir Bedivere. Then take a walk past The Cheesewring (pictured right). This ancient rock sculpture, a pile of granite slabs, holds similar significance to some as Stonehenge. The nearby Hurlers and the Pipers are equally impressive and said to be the remains of men turned to stone! Wander around any of the marvellous National Trust houses and estates and English Heritage castles and you can conjure up a world of

chivalry, treason, daring and riches. From Medieval ruins and Georgian mansions to civil war forts and Tudor manor houses, there are magical stories to uncover, enjoy and even experience first-hand. There is medieval jousting at Pendennis, Tudor banquets at Trerice and a 17th Century Wassail at Trelissick – to think of just a few. If

you love a good ghost story, Cornwall has spooks to spare with sightings and rumours of haunting throughout, like Du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn – a real pub on Bodmin Moor and The County Arms in St Blazey. There are mythical creatures to test your nerves too – tales of panther-like cats preying on livestock. Indeed, there are regular sightings of the so-called Beast of Bodmin Moor so be on the look-out. And if you’re still on the hunt for a little more mystery, the little port of Boscastle houses a museum of witchcraft with the world’s largest collection of witchy regalia.

The more time you spend in Cornwall, the more you come to appreciate that there’s a little mystery to be found in most places - and the Cornish will be happy to tell you about it. Head to ‘Obby ‘Oss in Padstow for festival frolics but be sure to ask what is said to happen to any woman covered in the horse’s floaty costume. Ponder why a rock-dropping dragon means the people of Helston annually find

themselves “dancing here, prancing there, jigging, jogging everywhere.” Re-live a watery love-story in Zennor as you discover why a mermaid is carved into a local church’s pew and beware of Piskies wherever you go.

This is...

Mystical Cornwall

There really is nowhere quite like Cornwall and now you can share in a little of its magic too.

St Agnes Head & Beacon: A stunning coastal location for enjoying open heathland and breath-taking seascapes, this is one of the iconic settings for the TV adaptation of ‘Poldark’. –You might even catch Ross Poldark riding his horse across the landscape! Look out for peregrine falcons, gannets and dolphins! Owned by the National Trust and part of the South West Coast Path .

Gwennap Pit: Set at inland Busveal, the concentric, grassy rings of Gwennap Pit look like they were hewn by hand from the landscape. In fact, the amphitheatre was formed by the collapse of old mine workings. It marks the spot where John Wesley witnessed “the most magnificent spectacle this side of heaven”. and now stands as a memorial to the Methodist movement.

Heritage & History ...this charismatic county

If you think a holiday in Cornwall is all about the beaches and coastline, we can pleasantly surprise you as this ancient Celtic land offers up magic, mystery and intrigue as well as a thrilling history and rich heritage. From tales of smuggling and piracy to mine engines and china clay museums, historic houses to archaic rock formations and a vibrant people proud of their language, Kernewek, their traditions and their famous forefathers. Cornish men and women developed steam engines, codiscovered Neptune, gave birth to the Brontë sisters, captained The Bounty, led the suffragettes, became world champion boxers and pioneered long-distance radio. And Cornwall celebrates its heroes with its visitors at museums, attractions, festivals and sporting events all over Cornwall: You can celebrate “The Steam Giant” at Trevithick Day, a street festival of engineering and inventions

with lots of spluttering steam engines, singing, dancing and parades. Get closer to space at Goonhilly Earth Station, visit literary landmarks like Jamaica Inn, Sennen, Lamorna Cove and St Michael’s Mount – all of which have inspired our greatest writers. Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre is crammed full of amazing nautical exhibitions with artefacts dating back to before the famous Mutiny of 1789 and beautiful tall ships to admire. In Falmouth there is the award-winning National Maritime Museum - which is fun for all ages and all about the sea, boats and Cornwall. There are more than 50 museums telling the story of Cornwall’s colourful social, industrial, economic, artistic, environmental and political past and present where visitors are enlightened at the distinctive force this county has played in the world. And as for distinctive, Cornwall’s unique sporting prowess is more unusually demonstrated at hurling the ball games - a legacy of Celtic sport from centuries ago - sort of like rugby.

At Porthcurno’s Telegraph museum you can wonder at the cable stretching from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world to the entire globe beyond. Before the days of the internet, this quiet, western fringe was a hub of international communications where its importance is underlined by the presence of secret WWII tunnels. Tourists flock to Cornwall now as widely as miners once did and now the two collide. The breathtaking and iconic tin mines and engine houses which litter the coast and hinterland are why this historic landscape is up there with The Great Wall of China and The Taj Mahal. All UNESCO World Heritage Sites, they offer “outstanding value to humanity.” There is now even a dedicated “cultural theme park” celebrating this industrial chapter –

Heartlands is a thoughtful playground where adults and children can engage. So, for a day off the beach, go wild for history and heritage. Discover why the Cornish flag is black and white, why Henry VIII’s divorce shaped the future of Cornwall’s most famous harbour, why white, stone-washed coastal huts were once the lifeblood of the fishing industry, which is the most painted scene by artists, which church is at risk of being buried in sand and why friendly locals saying hello can leave you feeling like you’re speaking a different language.

A third of the county is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and much of that is coastline – 295miles in total, so you’re in for a treat. Cornwall offers blissful beaches for everyone, for summer scorchers or wintery wonders, romantic strolls or fist-pumping action, a spot for yourself or a spot to walk the dog. It’s all here so everyone can find a beachy haven in Cornwall. No wonder year after year Cornwall is voted the best holiday county in the country. The Cornish coast is truly a natural wonder and a seaside playground from worldrenowned beaches like Fistral,

Carbis Bay and Kynance Cove to hidden gems that can’t be named and can only be discovered in person. It’s shaped the landscape and the pastimes of the people with watersports a staple ingredient of life in these parts. Surfing is a great sport for all ages and fitness-levels and the perfect place to have a go but there’s other options too with growing recognition for the amazing kitesurfing spots like Daymer Bay, Hayle and Watergate Bay. Or for calm days, many beaches offer kayak and even pedalo rentals – a great choice for a more serene ride and a chance to spot the coastal wildlife like seals and dolphins. Explore the wild sandy expanses of Constantine Bay with its grassy tussocked dunes

and breath-taking seascape, go west and fall in love with the turquoise sea off Porthcurno, or go south and the sheltered warmth of popular ‘Gylly beach’ as the Falmouth locals call it. Here are some tips for getting the best from your Cornish Beach Holiday. Many of Cornwall’s beaches, attractions and plenty of scenic walks have facilities for visitors with disabilities and our less mobile guests. It is always best

to check specific requirements before you go. Many beaches also have sand chairs for hire for wheelchair users. Beaches can be the perfect place to walk and play with four-legged family members many welcome well-behaved dogs but check before you go. For a list of beaches and attractions which allow dogs, go to Visit Cornwall’s excellent website visitcornwall.com which contains lots of useful information and contacts.

Cornwall

Full of Flavour

No holiday in Cornwall is complete without sampling a staple list of local must-feast foods: The Cornish Pasty (crimped to perfection), a Cornish Cream Tea (with EU-protected Cornish Clotted Cream), fish and chips (by the sea with seagulls looking enviously on), a locallymade ice cream (flavours endless and ever-changing) and a pint of local ale (whilst chatting to friendly locals). Food and drink in Cornwall is so important to locals and visitors alike, the industry has a turnover of more than £1billion with the biggest dairy sector in the UK. But that’s not just down to pasties, pints and indulgent treats, it’s because the world is now recognising Cornwall as a gastronomical hot-spot full of renowned and talented chefs, seriously special restaurants and firstclass produce. A visit to a local farmers’ market or food fair (there’s one almost every weekend of the year) will offer a spectacular array of goodies from awardwinning cheeses and wines, locally cured meats, freshly-baked

breads, quirky cupcakes and fresh seafood to homemade sausages and pies, delicious chocolate, chutneys, jams and pickles as well as foraged-flavoured frozen yoghurt and spirits. Literally anything your stomach might desire. Cornwall’s restaurant-scene is exceptional with celebrities and Michelin-stars around every corner. Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein, Nathan Outlaw, Paul Ainsworth, Chris Eden, Ben Tunnicliffe to name a few of our culinary superstars. Just as special though are the family-run cafes, beach-side diners, kitschy tea-rooms and gastro-pubs. More recently a “Choose Cornish” Cafe Trail has popped up allowing visitors to find spots to eat wherever they are, safe in the delicious knowledge the fare won’t have travelled far. So as far as your tastebuds go, your next holiday to Cornwall is bound to be truly tasty.

Top Tips for Visitors keeping Cornwall beautiful...

By making the right choices you can help to keep Cornwall beautiful. 1. Choose a green place to stay… Many of our Parks have a keen interest in sustainability and keeping Cornwall green, after all without Cornwall’s brilliant scenery visitors won’t want to come to Cornwall and won’t need a place to stay! So make the right choice with accommodation first. 2. Enjoy the scenery… Appreciating the scenery and taking a while to just be has a great effect on your mind, body and soul. Through connecting with the environment we learn to fully appreciate and thus preserve and respect it. Make sure you take in those sea views, take a deep breath and enjoy! 3. Buy locally… When you can, buy locally so that you sustain local businesses rather than chains. It is also an excellent way to enjoy the range of food and drink that Cornwall has to offer. Cornwall is a foodie heaven so sampling our Cornish delights is all part of the holiday experience: fruit and vegetables, ice cream, clotted cream, meat, cheese,

beers and wines. Many restaurants source food from local suppliers, so you can savour each mouthful and know that you are supporting the local traders as well as knowing that your food hasn’t had to travel far. 4. Recycle… Keep the beaches tidy by cleaning up your barbecues and picnics, and if you can use a reusable barbecue rather than a disposable. Recycle where you can - many Parks have recycling facilities. Use washable containers, crockery and cutlery when camping and touring. 5. Use less energy… When you are away, and not paying the bills, it is tempting to get slack and forget to turn lights out and let water run that little while longer. It is good to remember though that conserving energy is not just for the sake of the energy bills for the Parks, but for Cornwall, England, and beyond!

and full of depth, character and culture. If you need some ideas, then check out an art gallery whether small, famous, trendy or traditional. There’s a thriving literary culture here too with the Port Eliot, St Ives and Du Maurier bookish extravaganzas. Or dance the night away in one of our lively towns - like Newquay with its holiday and surf vibe; Falmouth with its student nightlife or the more cosmopolitan city of Truro with its upmarket wine and cocktail bars. The music is impressive too with many big name DJs playing in the summer at local nightclubs plus huge bands playing The Eden Sessions, Boardmasters and at The Princess Pavilions.

You’re in good company

in Cornwall…

Cornwall is the must-do stay-cation spot for the rich and famous. From those who remember happy childhoods here to those who fell in love and bought a home, Cornwall has become a special spot for some big names: James Corden - the comedian and actor has lapped up the Cornish sun for holidays with his wife as well as filming on Perranporth Beach. Thandie Newton - the Hollywood actress was raised in Penzance . Dawn French - the larger-than-life actress, author and comedian has pledged to spend the rest of her life based in Cornwall, and lives in a beautiful home in Fowey. Phillip Schofield - says fish and chips with his daughters overlooking Fistral Beach in Newquay would be on his 24-hour fantasy wish-list. His family live in the town. Madonna - she bought a home on The Roseland several years ago. Prince William & Prince Harry - both have enjoyed the surf at Polzeath. Joss Stone - the soul singer owns a house in Cornwall. Robert Pattinson - used to holiday in Falmouth, Truro and Newquay. David and Samantha Cameron – our previous Prime Minister and his wife have enjoyed several holidays

away from No. 10 here, most famously when their youngest child Florence was born in Truro. Jamie Cullum - he went to Looe with his family every year as a child. Richard Madeley & Judy Finnegan - the presenters and newspaper columnists famously have a home near Polperro and spend a lot of time there. Rick Stein - the TV Chef has built his foodie empire in Padstow but has now expanded to Falmouth, Newquay and Porthleven. He’s regularly out and about at booksignings and the many Cornish food festivals. ...and of course, the cast members of Poldark and Doc Martin can often be seen at filming locations across the county!
