Introduction The training project “EcoMobY – Emergency Cooperation Mobility through Youth” took place in the city of Guimarães (Portugal). The goal of this project was to promote exchanges, cooperation and training in the field of sustainable mobility. The activities were developed during 6 days with the participation of 24 representatives, from Albania, Armenia, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Spain and Turkey and the support of 1 trainer, 1 facilitator, 1 speaker and 1 member of Desincoop staff.
The main activities of the project were: presentations, discussions, Lab work and awareness campaigns with a final performance. The young participants learned through contact with peers (peer to peer learning) learn doing (learning by doing), sharing their national heritage and culture, learning how construct together (cooperative learning) a real intercultural dialogue to reach one conscience of problems and some potential solutions in sustainable mobility. The most relevant aspect of this project was the special importance given to the promotion of cycling as a complement of walk or/and public transport. As a clean vehicle, will bring benefits in medium and long term to help solving problems in the domains of environment, transport and traffic. Besides of an ecological mentality, the increased number of bicycle users will be profitable in financial terms, by saving money and energy resources.
The programme of the course was conducted using an interactive and participative approach, through the inputs of the trainer and one experienced team that carried out the course, based on the experiences, needs and knowledge of the participants. The training focused on different methods using non-formal education including energizers, getting to know each others, working also with key concepts during the working thematic group sessions. 6
This project takes place in Portugal, where the population should be more open to this matter, since we are experiencing serious economic and financial crisis. The recent changes and the new emerging needs oblige the society to explore and be more creative. In this context sustainable mobility could finally manages to take his place and gain the value that so far had been denied. The city of Guimar達es was perfect to develop this project, this is a small city in the european level but a medium size in Portugal. During 2012, Guimar達es was European Capital of Culture, what increased the number of quotidian visitants, bringing a more cosmopolitian look and lifestyle. This new european context turn out to be a great experiment environment. 7

Feedback This was my first experience in Youth in Action program and everything was new for me. I got very glad about meeting so different nice people from a lot of countries. I think that this is the most important thing, the mix between different cultures and ways of living. The experience teached me different points of views about the sustainable mobility and specifically about the transportation in bikes. I learned that each region in each country is different because the weather, the mountains, the roads, the way of driving... That´s the way we have to fight it´s not easy, but together and using the knowledge and some interesting ideas that we learned during the week the road will be easier.

My experience of EcoMobY training course was really improving, indeed, by sharing opinions and experiences of national praxis I understand that sensitization on sustainable mobility has to involve not only all normal people (those who need to be convinced of the positive aspects of eco-transportation) but also municipalities and politicians in general. Active and participative actions are also really important, because the give the possibility to get close and to show to the citizens how they are responsible of their own health which is strictly connected to the health of our planet.

The more we obtain wisdom in today’s environmentally-threatened world the more we realize that the world should turn towards greener technologies. While staying in Guimarães I more than ever began to highlight the importance of environmentally sustainable mobility and coming back to my home town, I constantly think of innovative ways of making use of what I have learnt during the meetings and trainings in Guimarães. I am in fact convinced that if there were a partnership between Yerevan, my city, and Guimarães it could have been easier to build EcoMobility systems in these cities.
It was a very good project for me, because I was at learner state person about sustainable mobility; and I think most of us were. So; there were a lot of useful infırmation about sustainable mobility and its practice through cycling. I think I have learned from project that why we must leave our comfort for the good of society. Our city is as small as yours, and I saw that it is very easy to take a tour around the my city by bike while not consuming any fuel or gas or electricity. I have learned about how a city must be desinged for sustainable mobility and why youngsters can have a very important role about decision making for society. Thank you very much about this project and for your hospitality. Take care!

Dear members of Desincoop, I am sincerely grateful for the project. It was really great experience for me and also a big cultural exchange. First, I learned to ride a bicycle otherwise it would be impossible to catch the main points of the project. As I saw in Guimaraes, cycling is not so comfortable, as there are lots of hills and luck of the special roads and mentality about Ecomoby, but on the other hand I saw the active part of citizens who are ready to promote cycling and to make comfortable paths, to change mentality, etc. Working on the maps, meeting in Municipality, events, discussions and the daily life in Guimaraes showed that the city will have sustainable mobility soon. As a result, now in my home county I try to promote the EcoMoby. I hope to see you again.
The project of Ecomoby held in Guimaraes changed my way of perceiving mobility. I had the opportunity to learn more about the topic and grabbed ideas and knowledge from the participants of the other countries. Furthermore, I can say that after years without riding a bike, and after not feeling very confident using it for the activities of the project, I decided to buy a year pass for the usage of the public bicycles in my city, so now I normally use it to go to work and more things! And I feel so good!

In Guimarães, we had the opportunity to discuss well the topic “Sustainable Mobility”. There we had the chance to compare our country and personal experiences about mobility with people from different backgrounds. We had the chance to learn from each other and tried to come up with new possible solutions about the problem. Now with this awareness we are trying to raise awareness in our communities to use mobility in a sustainable way. For me sustainable mobility is the way to be economical and environmentally friendly. It was a great, unforgettable, useful experience for me

When I was on the project EcoMobY, I learned more deeply about the sustainable mobility. I enjoyed riding bicycle through the city and the beautiful views. I miss to be in Portugal and all the wonderful people that I have met there. I do not think I will forget anyone from there. It was really amazing, good and wonderful.

During the project the Guimarães I learned about the traffic problems in other countries that were participating in the project. Problems are generally similar and the biggest problem is that there is no understanding of the power plants of the local authorities as well as aid from the government. I saw that you have people in Portugal and enthusiastic desire to make changes. Upon my return to my municipality I started a drive to places I always parkig bikes to school dovrištima. During the month of October there was an increase in the number of students who come to school by bike rather than by car or public transport.I activated the people around me to use more gradčki saddle and bicycle. I think it is possible to introduce eco Giuimarães transportation and that it is even necessary to preserve the old city center. The hills on which the city is not a big obstacle because they can introduce the electric bicycles and bicycle parking fields what they are talking about and the maps we have done.
In this week I learned that Guimarães is an interesting city with a big historical background and variety. I saw that the Portuguese people are lovely and welcoming, I learned how we can implement the idea of the Ecological Mobility in a variety aspects of our lives (and that I need to learn to ride a bike!). I also saw that even though we come from different countries and cultures, we are all human beings, and not very different from each other. It was the best experience of my life, and I especially enjoyed the trips and the meeting with people from the various countries and of course I enjoyed the enchanting counselors Sara and Leonor. They have organized the project in the best way and without them the experience would not be the same thing. In conclusion I would like to repeat this experience and to take part in more projects like this one. 32

4 This project was developed with the support of the Youth in Action programme of European Union. “Youth in Action is the EU Programme for young people aged 15-28 (in some cases 13-30). It aims to inspire a sense of active citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young Europeans and to involve them in shaping the Union’s future.” “Youth in Action is a programme for all! It promotes mobility within and beyond the EU borders, non-formal learning and intercultural dialogue, and encourages the inclusion of all young people, regardless of their educational, social and cultural background.”
Sub-Action 3.1 - Co-operation with EU neighbours “Youth in Action features a strong international dimension. Through the ‘Youth in the World’ Action, it helps strengthen relations between the EU and its neighbours, as well as the rest of the world by providing young people and youth workers from Europe with the opportunity to take part in exchanges and other non-formal education activities with their peers living outside the Union. This Action supports various projects with EU Partner Countries, with a special focus on its neighbouring regions – Eastern Europe and Caucasus, the Mediterranean region, and South-East Europe.” in http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/youth/

Icebreakings, Team Buildings and Energizers Activities like Icebreakings, Team Buildings, energizers have added value to this project, as well as being tools of non-formal methodology, they fit perfectly in the project theme, maximizing the features that we wanted to highlight in the working group. Such activities are extremely important for creating a cohesive group in which members interact in a more fluid and efficient way. These were also reflected positively in free time as participants continued to interact, regardless of nationality, going to one of our goals, of not isolating themselves in groups with affinities of origin or language skills. Thus, we can conclude that through these tools the working group reached the desired objectives more quickly and clearly.
Definition of Sustainable Mobility In the beginning of the project, we wanted to have a soft approach to the subject, what do you think that mean “sustainable mobility? In small groups the participants had to choose 5 words or sentences that describe better this concept. In the end with all the approaches of the groups, and after a small discussion, we achieve a comum definition.
36
Good Practices With this activity was intended to acquaint the participants with the existing realities in partner countries regarding sustainable mobility. With this the participants were able to share knowledge and experiences from their different perspectives and realities. One of the main conclusions of this activity, was that regardless the country or location in Europe, the realities would not be very different, because the mentality of the citizens regarding this issue is in essence similar.
City Game This activity is essential to all youth in action projects, for participants who have never been in the city where the project takes place and whose also don’t know anything about, might from there feel more confident and therefore facilitate movement without recourse to a native or member of the organization. Such us the City Game theme such the conversations generated over this, had always special attention to sustainable mobility, which were being singled out along the course to identify what was good or what was bad.
37
Ride Exploratory of Cycleways This tour was fundamental to the learning process because beyond the physical and ecological component of cycling, participants could apply what they had learned and discussed previously, saying positive and negative comments regarding the chosen route (Caminho Real / surrounding area of the Multisusos Guimar達es). We emphasize that the opinion of the participants was extremely positive because they thought in there was gathered physical and structural good conditions for sports, as well as leisure and wellness.
Visit to Guimar達es City Hall With the visit to Guimar達es City Hall, which was attended by the alderman of environment and sport, the participants had the possibility to know more about the projects of the city, including the investment in the main supplies of electric cars. Participants also had the opportunity to raise some questions and even submit some proposals that they considered relevant to our city. In the end the interactive model of the municipality of Guimar達es was showed, to increase the understanding in the morphology of the city.
38
Intercultural Night Several flavors, textures and sounds filled a night dedicated to cultures. Each country presented and gave a small taste of their typical dishes and drinks and of course, their music. In the end, using some videos, young people learned some traditional dance steps and answered questions about the countries, which were previously prepared by the participants. Thus allowed a very rich and cultural exchange.
Debates Issues such as “A more sustainable city depends only of its citizens?” Or “Building infrastructures is enough to adopt a sustainable behavior?” were discussed among participants during a debate. The participants should moved in the room, according to their opinions (yes, no, maybe). It was possible to discuss many points of view, results of individual contexts and experiences.
39
Workshop of Bicycles This was a very important activity for us. The main idea was to create and find new solutions to old bicycles. After a previously collect of damaged and deteriorated ones, they were disassembled to enable them to be repaired and transformed into a new bicycle for a new functionality. After this transformation they could be applied for different services, in a non polluting way. e.g. sell flowers, fruits and vegetables, books...
Guimarães a pedalar Event One of the biggest activity in the local level was “Guimarães a pedalar”. The participants had the chance to join the local community in a bike ride through the city of Guimarães. This is an event created to celebrate the World Car Free Day The main objective is to encourage reflection on the overuse of the car and to propose to people who drive every day to review the dependency that was created in the use of car. Our city is small but the use of the bike is almost nonexistent, so this was very important in the local level. The idea is that people experience at least in this day, alternative forms of mobility, by preference non polluting ways, finding it possible to get around the city without using the car.
40
Freezing This was one of our final activities, after discuss and identify what are the issues related with our cities and the lack of sustainable mobility solutions, it was time to find new approaches to spread our ideas and possible solutions. One of the main ideas and a very basic one to implement, is increase the use of the bicycle as a transportation. To raise awareness to this topic between the local community we choose to do a freezing with our bicycles in important spots of the city.
Creation of a Sustainable Island This was the last group activity of the project and we gave the opportunity to participants to start from scratch a new sustainable city in an island. They had to discuss in group, dream and create a city that fit in their values and very important should be totally independent from the rest of the world. After the creation process, we distributed from time to time some “problems” or “issues” that they have to solve. The problems were real and gave the chance to the participants to experience how difficult it is to include our personal values and our ideas in comunity and how to respect the other’s opinion without compromising the common place they created earlier. In the end of the activity we had a discussion about how they worked in the groups. After the presentations we could notice that every city was different, but more than that some groups experience more difficults than others in the process of making decisions. We could understand what they feel, what were their obstacles and how they solve their situations as a group and as a city.
41
Planning for Sustainable Mobility in a City
This was time to have some real action and to bring ideas to the table. The idea of this activity was to have two teams with two maps of the city center of Guimarães and to purpose some actions, real solutions and maybe some new infrastructures that would make this city more suitable for sustainable mobility. After almost a week understanding how the city works and after all the questions answered by a member of the City Hall, with their own experience and with the vision result of this Training Course they created these two alternative plans.
Parking Day “PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks”. The Ecomoby project together with local partners, profit from the fact of having activities on Friday, September 21 st to join this important movement. The intention of transform this parking spaces, is to generate more debates about how is created and used public space, with all the traffic and car parking issues.

6 Cycling to Meet Europe’s GHG Reductions
“If bicycling is as popular in the European Union as it is in Denmark, this would result in upto a 26 percent decrease in GHG emissions for the transportation sector. The climate change policy talks in Durban finally wrapped up and participating nations agreed to pursue a new course of action in the global fight against climate change. Despite the inspiring agreement, one thing is still unclear and that is the strategy with which the world’s nations will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve limited temperature rise. Perhaps the new study from the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) on how cycling can reduce greenhouse gas emissions can play a role in defining that strategy. We have covered the health benefits and reduced greenhouse gas emissions cycling can achieve many times on this blog and now we have one more reason to talk about it. The study by the ECF defines and emphasizes the environmental advantages of cycling, looking at the entire life-cycle of bicycles, electronic bicycles and private vehicles. The study doesn’t recognize cycling as a “zero emissions” mode of transport. In fact, the study explains, labeling cycling as a zero emissions option would be misleading with respect to its production. Instead, the analysis accounts for every step in getting people from point A to point B, even including the GHG emissions of the food intake of cyclists. Here are the phases the study takes into account: The production phase, which includes the energy and material inputs required to manufacture the vehicle. The operation phase, which includes fuel production and utilization. The maintenance phase, which includes all activity required to keep a vehicle as safe as possible on the road. The study finds that if cycling across the EU’s 27 nations 47
was as widespread as it is in Denmark alone, then bicycling can help reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions for the transportation sector by up to 26 percent. Though, the percentage reduction would vary depending on which transport mode the bicycle replaces. This could go a long way in helping the EU achieve its much-needed goal of a 60 percent GHG reduction for the transportation sector by 2050. If we consider the current GHG reduction targets of the EU, an individual would only be able to travel 2,170 kilometers (1,348 miles) by car, 5,822 kilometers by bus (3,618 miles), and 28,000 kilometers (17,398 miles) by bicycle per year. So basically, if you wanted to limit your driving to meet the EU GHG reductions, you would only be able to drive 1,348 miles per year, which, if you’re traveling at 60 miles per hour, would be about only 23 hours of continuous driving per year. With the entire life-cycle included in the calculation, bicycles release about 21 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per passenger-kilometer traveled. Of the 21 grams of CO2e cycling produces, 16 grams come from the “fuel” (food) of the cyclist and only 5 grams come from the production and maintenance of the bike. An electric bicycle, a bicycle with an electric motor, releases 22 grams of CO2e, very close to a pedal-powered bicycle. But these numbers get a little bit larger when we start discussing cars. Similar to its analysis of the life-cycle emissions of bicycles, the study repeats this methodology for passenger cars. “A car’s carbon footprint cannot be based on fuel consumption alone,” the study explains. “The production of raw material and the process of manufacturing a car have an important impact on its overall GHG emissions.” The study looks at every factor that goes into operating a vehicle, from its production to sitting in traffic, and concludes that a car emits 271 grams of CO2e per passenger-kilometer. That is nearly 15 times more than emissions from bicycles! And this value doesn’t even include the emissions from air-conditioning in cars, which would add an additional 10 to 20 grams per vehicle-kilometer. Overall, the study has some interesting facts and figures, and a thorough analysis and comparison of GHG emissions from bicycles and private vehicles. The study’s findings point to the urgent need for more policies that encourage cycling, create safe infrastructure for alternative modes of transport and inspire behavior change. It’s alarming and a bit discouraging to see how far we have to travel to attain healthier levels of emissions in our atmosphere, but it’s inspiring to see that we have the tools to achieve this goal.”

Guidelines - Developing and Implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan “The need for more sustainable and integrative planning processes – also in sectors related to urban mobility – has been widely recognised. At the European level, Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans have gained increased recognition and importance as well. The European Commission’s action Plan on Urban Mobility aims at accelerating the take-up of sustainable urban mobility planning in europe by providing guidance material, promoting best practice exchange, identifying benchmarks and supporting educational activities for urban mobility professionals. Sustainable urban mobility planning received a further significant push when the EU transport ministers adopted conclusions on the action Plan on Urban mobility in Luxembourg on 24 June 2010. The Council of the european Union “supports the development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans for cities and metropolitan areas [..] and encourages the development of incentives, such as expert assistance and information exchange, for the creation of such plans.” “The EC’s action Plan on Urban mobility calls for an increase in the take up of sustainable urban mobility planning in europe. This document introduces the concept of Sustainable Urban mobility Plans and sets out the steps involved in the preparation of such plans.” in http://www.mobilityplans.eu/docs/SUMP_guidelines_web0.pdf
Sustainable Transport - What do we want to achieve? “With growing freight and passenger transport, pollution and congestion risk is aggravating. The European Commission is working towards a form of mobility that is sustainable, energy-efficient and respectful of the environment. Our aim is to disconnect mobility from its adverse effects. This means, above all, promoting co-modality, i.e. optimally combining various modes of transport within the same transport chain, which is the solution for the future in the case of freight. Technical innovation and a shift towards the least polluting and most energy efficient modes of transport — especially in the case of long distance and urban travel — will also contribute to a more sustainable mobility.” in http://ec.europa.eu/transport/themes/sustainable/index_en.htm

7 This kind of european project’s as an intercultural experience and a gathering of youngsters full of ideas and new solutions makes one of the best products of the project as immaterial. The possibility to develop and discuss an important theme through the vision of so many different people with so different backgrounds and realities is is an asset to our
learning, not only about the theme but also on a personal side. This case was no different, we cannot measure what we learned at this level, but we definitely can tell that we gain something more. Doesn’t matter how experienced you are, or the will that you have to learn more, this is something involuntary and it’s almost impossible to don’t reach you.

One of the materials proposals for this project was to create and develop a range of bikes, created from fragments of old or damaged bicycles. The idea of this worshop was to bring new ideas of how we can create new transports, for e.g. to more than one person, or develop services through non polluents ways. Using parts of the bicycles, we can show how it’s possible to re-use old things and take advantage of what for most of the people is considered garbage or something disposable. Is environmental friendly, creative and the most important part is a real solution. In so many countries this kind of methods are being use to sell flowers, fruits in the markets, books or even coffee around the city. This was also something that some years ago was used and it was effective. Even more this was a very pratical and fun woorkshop. After the hard work, we could make some tests in the bicycles and understood that works!

To raise more awareness and to share the knowledge of this Project in the local comunity activities the participants were dressed with the T-shirt of “Eco-Moby”. This was a way to bring some curiosity and attention to what we were doing and to identify the persons who were part of the project. It was used in activities like Freezing, “Guimarães a Pedalar” and Parking Day. This was also a better way when the participants wanted to approach some local persons to speak about the theme of the project, make some questions and/or raise some conscience about this thematic. In the event of “Guimarães a Pedalar” the participants also used it and made a tribute to Orlando, a professor that is very active and also share the idea of increasing the use of the bicycle, as a clean and eco-friend transport.

9 Conclusion The training project “EcoMobY – Emergency Cooperation Mobility through Youth was a big experience. The youngsters could learn more about sustainable mobility and appropriate this subject to change their behaviors and act as a citizens that want to take care of their cities and our environment.
in our project we could highlight some fields where the implementation of this idea would improve life in a global level. First of all transports are one of the major sources of pollution in the cities, not only affect air quality, but also cause noise pollution. More than these transports like bicycle already proved to be efficient and healthier. The improvement of the mobility and acessibility would also improve the image and landscape of the cities and promote a better quality of life.
In this intercultural meeting we can learn a lot, understand our differences and even more, understand what bring us closer, what we have in commun and this is the modern and polluent behavior that characterizes our societies. With the excessive growth of technology and the implementation of its developments across the world at low cost, there is now a need to control their damage and create a new habit in young people to think not only in transportation as something comfortable but also as something environmentally friendly and healthy.
During the project we were able to identify a lot of measures and changes that must be made to cultivate this responsable mobility . In other hand we also identify that the way that our cities are planned and built and the natural morphology functions as a barrier, but in most cases is nothing more than prejudices. but it is up to each of us to start changing some behaviours and implementing some measures, like the use of bicycle and public transport. Small changes can lead to big changes.
The positive effects of a sustainable urban mobility is a fact previously recognized and after the group discussions 63
