Sarang Song was born in a small city in South Korea. Ever since she was child, her parents have always encouraged her to experience the world. Starting from Korea, she has traveled the world whenever she had break from school and whenever she could afford it. Theses various cultural experiences became her design inspiration.

Sarang started out studying business in college, until she found her true passion in Interior Design. Before she became a student of Interior Architecture and Design at Academy of Art University, she did not have any knowledge about design principles or even design terms. However, she is a hardworking person and a fast learner. In every course, she fully acquired the course objectives and earned better-thansatisfactory results.

Sarang’s design philosophy is based on creating sustainable, flexible, and practical designs incorporated with clients’ needs and aesthetic elements. Her respect of cultural differences and her abundant experiences facilitate that her designs are suitable to anyone, anywhere.

CHANNEL APARTMENT MISSION BAY BLOCK 2, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94158 Channel apartment is located in San Francisco’s Mission Bay area. In the 1800s, this area became an industrial district and the buildings in this area were used as various kinds of warehouses. More recently the area has been designated as a redevelopment area, and it has been growing as a new middle class community. The area is adjacent to lots of restaurants, retail shops, and city landmarks. It is expected to develop more upscale residences, retail spaces, and restaurants in the future.

CONCEPT ‘TITANIUM’

Titanium is considered a “dream material” because of it’s longevity and incredible durability. Titanium is found under the earth’s crust and it is a new metal which is as strong as steel, but lighter. It has lustrous visual characteristics and is highly resistant to corrosion. These characteristics of titanium will serve as inspiration in the new market as one atmosphere. The characteristics of titanium will give the space a solid, timeless, and upscale feeling. Other materials, such as wood or glass, will soften the strong feeling like luxurious silverware with transparent glass on the polished wood table. I chose this inspiration for my concept because I believe titanium embodies the same characteristics - strength, durability, quality - that Tony would like to promote in his new market space. The market itself will draw in various consumers such as young people, hipsters, and foodies who want to get a new experience within a new community. As titanium can be a product of many different materials combined into an ideal solution, the new market will also pose as a successful solution of combining restaurant, demonstration kitchen, and featured market.

UPSCALE MARKET + PREPARED FOOD The market and prepared food areas are located on the North end near the front entrance where they can get plenty of daylight all day. Since the prepared food area is the most important function of the project for the client, upscale market and prepared food area evenly share and mingle the big space as one. Custom designed furniture, display units, and wine selection fridge present this market to customers as a unique and new experience. Customers can enjoy a quick and delightful breakfast at the Cafe and Bakery which are located near the North side entrance. Providing outdoor seating area and window seating makes shopping in the market easy. The wall feature made with black mirrors and red acrylic panels inspired by ‘titanium’ shape from the concept and it appears to be glowing from LED linear lighting behind it.

RESTAURANT + LOUNGE The restaurant is located in the middle of the project space. The first thing when customers come in the restaurant is beautiful subway wall tile which is client’s preference and it is onyx marble with reflection of outdoor sights on it. The bar of the restaurant is divided into Oysteria and Pizzeria as function which share long and nice ADA bar counter top together. As a solution to noise, there are dropped sound proof panels above the bar and dining area. The furniture is all custom designed to fit the concept of ‘titanium’. The small lounge area next to restaurant has lower ceiling to give comfort to customers who are waiting to be seated or taking a rest.

DEMONSTRATION KITCHEN The demonstration Kitchen is located in the South part of the building to make intimate connection with the Mission neighborhood to the south. The demonstration kitchen is designed as a flexible space where there are cooking classes, extra seatings, or public events. For these flexible usages, the corner of the space is designed with barn door with a black chalk board attached. All the appliances will be stored behind the barn door. The ADA demonstration kitchen table is custom designed for children, disabled people, and adults users. For the community, the demonstration kitchen provide several opportunities for underserved people. Also demonstration kitchen will host fund-raising for the Mission Bay Library, located 0.1miles away from the market and for the UCSF Medical Center. The demonstration kitchen will be an important leading part of the Mission Bay area community. The ceiling design is different from market space and restaurant yet inspired by ‘titanium’ appearance. The repetition of column and wall design unifies this long and large space.

The neighborhood around the site is very quiet and most amenities are in walking distances. South San Francisco Public Library is located across from the project site which makes to using the library easy for the senior residents. There are four Samtrans routes going around the project site and Bart station is three minutes away from the site helping senior residents travel independently. Also San Mateo County is a highly recommended area for bicycling and hiking. Lots of bicycle facilities and hiking trails encourage residents to do outdoor activities.

Designing space for senior living accompanies many considerations such as accessibility, mobility, and quality of their lives. Seniors also have their own lifestyles which they have been living with and which they want to keep. We think that seniors’ lifestyles are the last step of their lives lifestyle, but their needs and lifestyles are changeable, so the facility has to have flexibility. It is important to have easy access to the outdoors and to a community every day. Independent residents want a private health care environment. Also senior housing is not just for seniors, it is for their families. The facility will be a welcoming resort environment, rather than an institutional environment.

BRANDING

SOUTH CITY RESORT SENIOR HOME

Since the new senior living center presents to San Mateo County community as a resort, the name of the senior living center is ‘South City Resort’, which clearly reflects the entire concept of the project. Also, instead of saying ‘Senior Housing’, this facility will be called ‘Senior Home’, because this senior living center will be designed as home-like environment instead of institutional environment. The triangular shapes in the background are inspired by a graphic networking system, and they mean senior residents’ active lifestyles incorporated with the community. The color of blue and green represents sustainable design of this project.

CONCEPT

‘LOCAL RESORT’

Applying hospitality design components to senior living center design is a trend design. My concept for a senior living center is inspired by this trend as well as, South San Francisco. South San Francisco is called ‘Industrial City’ because it was an industrial suburban the past. The city plan was divided into two, one for industrial district and another one for residential district for employees. After WWII, the city’s development plan changed to office parks, yacht harbors and mostly fine residential areas. South San Francisco is surrounded by cities such as San Bruno, Daly City, and Pacifica and it’s valley faces to San Francisco Bay, so there is opportunity of bay views. The hills of South City in the west shield from the prevalent fog important for the health of senior residents. These geological factors and nature habitat will be applied into the senior home as design factors. South San Francisco co-exist with wild habitat. Most of the future residents of new senior home will be local senior people. The new senior home will be resort-like where people can feel as if they are moving into vacation spot, but still they can connect with familiar local community around.

The rattan furniture contribute to creating a resort-like environment, which is the goal of this facility.

RESIDENCE LOUNGE The residence lounge is located in front of the elevator so residents and their family members see it first before entering the residence units. The repetition of wall features and the continuous living wall from the first floor create a familiar environment for the residents with dementia and protect them from panicking or wandering into unfamiliar spaces. The furniture selections are in bright colors which makes the lounge space more lively. Skylights and an atrium provide the residents sunlight.

ROOF The sun room located in the south is covered with a solar panel roof. The rattan tables and seating provide a space for residents to read and chat. Two extra seating areas in east and west sides of the building are covered with sun shade sails inspired by the yacht harbor in South City. Between two seating areas, is an outdoor theater under a retractable roof. The native plantings on the roof provide shelter to native wildlife.

Bonus Room Open View

LEVEL 1 Level 1 is a Public Housing unit, through San Francisco’s Section 8 and Rental Assistance Program. It has the basic spaces of a home, and a bonus room for flexibility because the tenants are not designated, and so their needs are different. This changeable usage is implied by the idea of “land,” which can accommodate many types of building projects. The few unified colors and materials reflect the concept of land which is the basic realm for all living creatures on earth. The neutral color of this unit lends warmth and is welcoming to new tenants.

LEVEL 2 Level 2 must be ADA compliant due to one of the daughters, Aimee, who uses a wheelchair and is visually impaired. Her bedroom, bathroom and the kitchen is designed with enough space be ADA compliant. The unit was designed with circular-shaped elements allowing her to freely move throughout the space in her wheelchair. In Jason’s master suite’s dark blue paint and tile reflect a calm and relaxing feeling of being in the sea at night. To provide the reminiscence of sea waves reflecting in the sunlight, used recycled glass is used for the backsplash and island countertop. Using recycled glass makes for a design that is green and eco friendly.

LEVEL 3 Since the Level 3 unit is to be used for lots of family gatherings and events, the office next to the dining room and living room has a sliding wall that was designed using sustainable infinite glass. The office walls can be slid open when there are social events and closed for business. A white and silver color scheme gives an airy feeling of the sky, and copper used as the main material for the hardware, fixtures, and accessories expresses the color of sunset.
