IL MAT RIMO N I O S E G R E TO SY N O P S I S

ACT I The home of Geronimo, a well-to-do merchant, who lives in Italy with his two daughters, Elisetta and Carolina, and his sister Fidalma. Paolino is secretly married to Carolina, the younger of Geronimo’s two daughters. As the opera begins, Paolino assures Carolina that he has arranged for her sister Elisetta to marry his friend and patron Count Robinson. Once Elisetta and the Count are married, the couple will finally be able to reveal their secret. Geronimo receives a letter from the Count asking for his daughter Elisetta in marriage, and is delighted that his daughter will marry a nobleman, as is Elisetta herself. Meanwhile, in a quiet moment, Fidalma, the girls’ aunt, reveals to Elisetta that she too plans to get married. (In an aside, she names the man she loves, none other than Paolino, who is completely unaware of her feelings.) The Count arrives and realizes he has a strong preference for the younger sister, Carolina. He tells Paolino that she is the one he intends to marry, even if it means receiving a smaller dowry. Count Robinson declares his love to Carolina, but she, without revealing her secret, tells him she has neither the manners nor the desire to become a noblewoman. Elisetta, seeing them together, accuses Carolina of trying to steal the Count for herself. The household gathers, and, in the finale to the first act, each character expresses his or her confusion at the state of affairs.

ACT II

Meanwhile, Count Robinson, determined to convince Elisetta to release him, lists his many flaws, from gluttony to skirt-chasing. When she refuses to believe him, he confesses the truth, that she simply does not appeal to him. After he leaves, Fidalma arrives. She and the distraught Elisetta hatch a plot to have Carolina sent to a convent, leaving the path open for both of them to marry. They convince Geronimo that this is the best course of action. Carolina, finding herself alone with the Count, is about to confide her secret to him when the two are caught speaking in private. Geronimo, even more determined to send Carolina to a convent the following day, announces he is going to bed. Paolino and Carolina attempt their escape. Elisetta, hearing a noise, and suspecting that the Count is in Carolina’s room, wakes up Elisetta, Fidalma, and her father to accuse the Count of plotting to escape with her sister. When the Count emerges from his own bedroom, Geronimo, Fidalma, and Elisetta realize their error and apologize for suspecting him. Still, Elisetta continues to insist she has heard a noise coming from Carolina’s room. Carolina and Paolino emerge and finally reveal to all that they have been secretly married for the last two months. Geronimo threatens to cast them out, but the Count counsels him to forgive them instead, and promises to makes things right by marrying Elisetta after all. Carolina, Paolino, Elisetta, and the Count look forward to celebrating their marriages.

Later the same day. Count Robinson explains to Geronimo that he intends to marry Carolina, not Elisetta, and that he is willing to accept a smaller dowry. Geronimo, pleased by the idea of saving money, accepts the deal, on the condition that Elisetta too agrees. Paolino, seeing the turn things have taken, resolves to ask the girls’ aunt Fidalma to help him. Fidalma enters the room and, delighted to find Paolino alone, mistakenly assumes he is about to ask for her hand, and declares her love. The distraught Paolino faints. Carolina arrives, and Fidalma explains to her that Paolino has fainted because he was overcome by his feelings for her. Fidalma departs. As soon as Paolino comes to, Carolina confronts him, but, after explaining what has just happened, he suggests that they run away together before dawn. She agrees.

Students in the library of the Naples Conservatory, sitting in the central Sala Rossini are surrounded by thirty-eight bas relief portraits of the most important and influential composers of the so called “Neapolitan school.” Out of all thirty-eight, only one is instantly recognizable on the opera stage today: Vincenzo Bellini. The rest of the names run the gamut from mildly familiar (Giovanni Pergolesi, Niccolò Jomelli) to extremely obscure (Carlo Coccia, Fedele Fenaroli). But even the most obscure of those composers were giants in the field of opera during their time. The Neapolitan school was almost single-handedly responsible for the invention of comic opera, and its most famous member, Giovanni Pergolesi, wrote his most famous work, La serva padrona, at the age of twenty-three, almost as an afterthought, as a comic intermezzo to be performed in between the acts of a larger opera seria. Sarasota Opera audiences were treated to Pergolesi’s delightful comedy in the winter of 2021, where the stock characters and dramatic situations were distilled to their most compact essence.

The comic intermezzi of the 18th century eventually grew to have a life of their own, usually reflecting local audience tastes. For example, many comic operas that had their premiere in Naples utilized the Neapolitan language in dialog for one or more characters. These pieces are found in a variety of structures from one-act farces to two, three, and sometimes even four-act works. Throughout the late 18th and 19th century though, the two-act format was the norm. Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) is another example of the Neapolitan school. Born in Aversa near Naples in 1749, Cimarosa was able to take advantage of the excellent musical education afforded him by the Naples Conservatory system. He went on to write operas, or commedie in musica (comedies in music) for all the major Italian theaters in Naples, Rome, Venice, and Milan. All told, he wrote nearly one hundred operas (and possibly more), the overwhelming majority of which were comic. After a stint in St. Petersburg, Russia he landed in Vienna where his great masterpiece Il matrimonio segreto premiered in 1792 (the

year of Rossini’s birth). So popular was its first performance that the Austrian Emperor Leopold II ordered a private and immediate encore of the entire opera the very same night of the premiere. Although Cimarosa’s fame today predominantly rests on Il matrimonio segreto, it is hard to overestimate the influence he held over Italian music in the years before Rossini’s ascendance. After being fêted in the major international capitals of Russia and Austria, Cimarosa returned to his roots in Naples, ending his career by revising some earlier works and composing new ones. His career was tragically cut short when he was arrested for his political views by the repressive Bourbon regime governing Naples at that time. He was eventually able to escape, exiled, to Venice, by which time he was gravely ill. He died in Venice a few years later in 1801. But his legacy would live on. In 1812, immediately following the premiere of Rossini’s L’inganno felice (another treasure of 18thcentury Italian music, that Sarasota audiences heard in 2020), the impresario Antonio Cera wrote to Rossini’s mother: “I tell you, with all sincerity, that it is glorious that you have given birth to a man who, in a few years’ time, will be the ornament of all Italy, and it will be said that Cimarosa is not dead, but that his inspiration has passed on to Rossini.” Even after his death, the name Cimarosa would ring through Italian history as an example of musical and dramatic perfection.

Anthony Barrese is a freelance composer and conductor. He has led several productions with Sarasota Opera and with Opera Southwest where he is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor.

DEAN BURRY

The opera tells the coming-of-age story of a group of children who find their own courage and confidence to deal with a world unknown to them—that of the Ogs!

The girls’ brothers, Peter and Pollywog, and Earless (the cat) and Yukie (the dog) come to play dress up. Without them noticing, the green creature reappears and takes Pollywog and Earless down through the trapdoor. When Pamela describes what she saw earlier, the siblings and Yukie decide to go save them.

Back in the tunnel, Pamela realizes that with Penny gone, she now must be the courageous, big sister. She comes up with a plan to use Patsy’s tube of green paint to disguise Peter as an Og. In the cavern, Peter plays the part of an ‘Og’ and manages to free Earless, but when the Ogs see the paint on his arms rubs off, they try to capture him. Two ‘pirate’ Ogs named Hook and Smee learn his name is Peter, and they assume he is the famous ‘Peter Pan’ and challenge him to defend himself. Peter gets the idea to pretend that Earless is Tick-Tock, the crocodile from the tale of Peter Pan, and is amazed to see the Ogs flee in terror. At the jail, Penny is freed when Pollywog sneaks the keys out of the Sheriff’s pocket while he is sleeping. Penny realizes the Sheriff’s gun is only a toy and that the Ogs are just playing pretend. Penny plays along and now captures the Sheriff. Peter and Earless run into the jail, and Penny writes a note to the family in the tunnel. Earless sets off to deliver the note, and the others head to the cavern.

SARASOTA OPERA FALL SEASON 2022

COMPOSER /LIBR ETTIST

Composer and librettist Dean Burry has become one of the world’s leading composers of children’s opera, his works receiving performances across Canada, the United States, Europe, China and Brazil. At over 600 performances, his opera The Brothers Grimm is one of the most produced operas of the twenty-first century and his operatic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit recently received its European premiere to sold-out houses in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 2018, Burry accepted a professorship at the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University in Kingston and is the founding Artistic Director of the Watershed Festival - Reimagining Music Theatre.

As the opera starts, Penny and Pamela are reading in their playhouse, while their younger sister, Patsy, banished for painting the windows green, sits outside with her pet snake. Pamela sees a strange, green creature enter through a trap door in the floor who steals toys and books but, doubting the others will believe her, says nothing.

In the tunnel to the Og’s underworld, Penny hopes for confidence and tells the others to hide while she investigates. She enters a cavern with mushroom houses inhabited by green beings that seem to only say “OG”. Everywhere she sees things she had noticed missing from the playhouse. Though Yukie tries to be brave and protect her, she is taken off to jail by Ogs dressed as cowboys. On the way she spots Earless who has been captured, but is powerless to help. When they arrive at the jail, Penny is relieved to be reunited with Pollywog. She is surprised to hear the Sheriff speak English to her and even more so when he says he is the Wyatt Earp of cowboy legend!

Dean Burry

Back in the tunnel, a group of ‘spy’ Ogs intercept Earless and read the note. They begin to search for enemy spies, but when Patsy’s snake escapes from her pocket they run away in terror. In the cavern Peter, Penny, and Pollywog arrive with their hostage, the Sheriff, and demand to know what is going on. In the form of a pageant, the Ogs explain that originally the only word they had was “OG”. After discovering the wonder of a book, they realized how dull their lives were. They stole more books and toys from the playhouse and learned to talk and act like the characters in the stories. They explain their only fear is the Snake People who live up the river. The children say they must return home, but the Ogs worry they will tell others of their existence. Meanwhile, more Ogs arrive with news of Patsy’s snake, Snavely, who they think is a dreaded Snake Person. Realizing how to get the upper hand, the siblings tell the Ogs they have a ‘secret weapon’ to defeat the Snake People. However, they will only use it to help if they are released, and the Ogs stop using the tunnel beneath their playhouse. The Ogs agree, and the crisis is averted. As the children say good-bye, they sing that while make-believe can be fun, the real adventure is living life as yourself!!

Martha Collins is the Director of Education for Sarasota Opera where she has been a Stage Director since 2004. She is the director of this production of The Secret World of Og.

Burry has composed seventeen operas, including The Hobbit and The Secret World of Og for the Canadian Children’s Opera Company and Sarasota Opera, The Scorpions’ Sting for the Canadian Opera Company, The Mummers’ Masque for Toronto Masque Theatre, and the CBC serial radio opera Baby Kintyre (released on the Centredisc and Naxos labels in September, 2014). His most recent compositions include Tempest in a Teacup, which premiered in Guiyang, China, The Bells of Baddeck, Shanawdithit (Tapestry Opera and Opera on the Avalon), Sea Variations, a song cycle for Canadian Art Song Project and tenor Michael Colvin, and String Quartet No.1 (New Orford String Quartet/Prince Edward County Chamber Music Festival). The opera Shawnadithit was awarded the 2020 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Opera. Burry was the 2011 recipient of the Ontario Arts Foundation’s Louis Applebaum Composers Award for excellence in the field of music for young people. He is currently working on the operas Il Giudizio di Pigmalione and Tracing Colville: works that will premiere with Opera McGill and the Kingston Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2022.

PIERRE BERTON AUTHOR Pierre Berton was one of Canada’s most popular and prolific authors. His works include books of narrative histories and popular culture, coffee table books, stories for children, and historical works for youth. Many of his fifty books are Canadian classics. Born in 1920 and raised in the Yukon, Pierre Berton worked in Klondike mining camps during his university years. He spent four years in the army, rising from private to captain/instructor at the Royal Military College in Kingston. He spent his early newspaper career in Vancouver, where at 21 he was the youngest city editor at any Canadian daily. He wrote columns for and was editor of

Maclean’s magazine, appeared on CBC’s public affairs program “Close-Up” and was a permanent fixture on “Front Page Challenge” for 39 years. He was a columnist and editor for the Toronto Star and was a writer and host of a series of CBC programs. Pierre Berton received over 30 literary awards including the Governor-General’s Award for Creative Non-Fiction (three times), the Stephen Leacock Medal of Humour, and the Gabrielle Leger National Heritage Award. He received two Nellies for his work in broadcasting, two National Newspaper awards, and the National History Society’s first award for “distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian history.” For his immense contribution to Canadian literature and history, he was awarded more than a dozen honorary degrees. He is a member of the Newsman’s Hall of Fame, as well as a Companion of the Order of Canada. Pierre Berton died in Toronto on November 30, 2004.

ABOUT THE SECRET WORLD OF OG BY DEA N BUR RY I first entered Berton’s Og-world back in 2000 when Ann Cooper Gay (then Artistic Director of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company) asked me to find the subject for a new children’s opera. The Secret World of Og was one of about a hundred books I scoured that summer but that search ended in an extended vacation to Tolkien’s Middle Earth (The Hobbit). However, I vowed to return to that subterranean domain of little green Ogs. I’ll never forget the day back in late November 2004 when I officially requested permission from Elsa Franklin, Berton’s agent. In the morning I sent the request and returned home for supper to a phone message from my parents informing me that Berton had passed away. I was sure that approval would be indefinitely delayed, but the next day, I was invited to Elsa’s house for champagne to celebrate the life of an incredible Canadian storyteller. Permission was granted and my underground adventure was OG...I mean off. It has been a fun and varied trip. Many musical works for the stage are criticized for being too much of a pastiche, stealing their material from too many sources and therefore not achieving unity. I had to snicker when I realized the culture of the Ogs is ALL pastiche, stolen from above: pirate shanties, cowboy hoe-downs and jazzy spy themes all have their place in a world where everything is pretend. It feels like a journey back to my own childhood and the power of pretending.

Each season Sarasota Opera welcomes audiences into the historic Sarasota Opera House to share the experience of exquisitely produced art, led by the power of the unamplified human voice. Opera takes hundreds of people working together, designing, creating, and building—all before singers and orchestra members join in the work at rehearsals. But opera doesn’t live until thousands of people from all walks of life come through the doors of the Opera House to sit shoulder to shoulder in the theater for the sights, sounds, and sensations of a live performance. Opera is a powerful tool to build a culturally vibrant community. Using this belief as our guide, we create a calendar of educational and community-building events centered around the main titles of each season to inspire conversation, social engagement, and increased knowledge of the nearly 500 years of opera history.

Already a donor? Increasing your gift not only supports our season, it expands your involvement. Each donor level offers more access to opportunities to connect with artists, directors, conductors, and designers. SARASOTA YOUTH OPERA | $50 - $5,000 + Donors to the Sarasota Youth Opera support one of the most comprehensive youth opera programs in the country, providing a unique music education experience to youth, aged 8-18, from the greater Sarasota area and beyond. Youth Opera contributors enjoy special access to dress rehearsals and receptions that celebrate the student artists and their families.

Sarasota Opera is also dedicated to music education and the development of emerging artists. Sarasota Youth Opera fills a great need, providing robust training in opera and theatrical skills to youth aged 8 to 18. Programs like Invitation to Opera and Explorations in Opera, along with Artists in Schools and afterschool satellite programs in Bradenton and Newtown takes the world of opera to kids in our community and invites them into the theater to experience the power of music. Finally, our Studio & Apprentice Artist programs give practical training to singers just beginning their careers.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS | $500 - $2,500 + Part of Sarasota Opera’s mission is to provide education to our community about this wonderful art form. Our main education programs focus on school-aged youth and meets students at their schools and brings them into the Opera House for a first-hand experience of the power of live performance. Donors supporting these programs receive the same materials teachers and students receive, as well as invitations to witness these programs in action.

It is our hope each season that through these performances and programs, the joy of music and world-class talent on stage, behind the scenes, and in our orchestra pit brings members of our community closer together.

Donors to 2022-23 Season Education programs will be recognized in the 2023 Winter Festival Program Book.

Visit SarasotaOpera.org/support to join the chorus and raise your voice in support of all we do to contribute to our thriving community.

All gifts of $75 or more ($50 or more for Youth Opera) include name recognition in our program books. or both Ed and Jane, their love of opera began in their youth. Jane was raised in Greenville, Mississippi, and she and her family went to opera and operetta performances in Memphis – the nearest large city. As for Ed, “The first music I heard was most probably 1920’s vintage recordings of opera arias sung by the famous voices of that era, as well as listening to my Italian-born mother singing portions of the more well-known arias.” Ed then participated in a musical group known as the Roseto Italian Boys Band as a clarinetist. The only music the group played was marches, opera arias, and opera overtures! The Bavarias spent most of their adult lives living abroad or in Cincinnati. Their enthusiasm for opera became a passion when living in London in the early 1980’s, then in Cincinnati where Ed was a member of the Cincinnati Opera and Symphony boards. They also were involved with Opera Pacific while living in California in the mid-90’s.

YOUTH OP ERA CONTRIB U TO RS Sarasota Opera has one of the most comprehensive youth opera programs in the country, giving local young people the opportunity to study all aspects of opera. Members perform in choruses, Sarasota Opera productions, and—unique to Sarasota Youth Opera—a fully staged opera written specifically for young voices on the Sarasota Opera main stage. Apart from performance opportunities, participants are introduced to foreign languages, history, and culture, all while participating in a program that builds self-confidence and skills that will last a lifetime. Contributions to the Youth Opera provide scholarships for those in need, general program support, and support for the annual production. If you would like more information on giving a gift to Sarasota Youth Opera, contact Brenda Tamm at (941) 366-8450 ext. 250 or btamm@sarasotaopera.org.
