I

t is my honor and privilege to serve as the President of Indian Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (IFUMB). Being the head of a family of 2109 members is not an easy task, yet it is a great opportunity to encourage the ultrasound community in India to enlarge and embark their knowledge base. Since the founding of India Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (IFUMB) in 1978, the federation stays committed towards advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education and research. The organization successfully unites the ultrasound users in all medical specialties and provides them a platform to discuss and impart training in the use of ultrasound. Through organizing constant events, academic programs and conferences at various parts of India, the organization successfully remains committed to its mission. Towards streamlining the activities of IFUMB, the committee has revised its Constitution this year. With renewed guidelines, we hope to make the activities seamless, yet systematic in the future. IFUMB and its academic wing ICMU are actively involved in arranging two midterm teaching seminars every year which are well attended. The annual congress USCON is held at new exciting destinations to reach out academically to remote areas and also to provide leisure time for the busy ultrasonologists working throughout the year USCONXXII the forthcoming National Conference of IFUMB is all set to happen from the beautiful Puducherry from 25th to 27thOctober 2013. Through these events, we intend to reach out to plenty of people, offering light to new researches in ultrasound and also and help to collaborate the segment with industry needs. We have just launched our much awaited IFUMB journal with the help of the editorial team of COLOR DOPPLER magazine and I am sure this will become a ready reckoner for all practicing sonologists in future. Before concluding, I once again thank you all for entrusting me the responsibility of President of IFUMB and I assure you all to offer the best service during the tenure. USCON aspires to showcase the latest technological advancements in ultrasound and implement recent trends into clinical practice; It has been extremely successful in this endeavor, growing by leaps and bounds over the years. This year, USCON XXII will be conducted for a period of three days, including workshops that focus on day to day issues in Women's Imaging, Doppler in Obstetrics, First Trimester Screening, Fetal Anatomy, Muskulosketal Ultrasound and Techniques of Intervention. We have taken utmost care to nominate faculty who will deliver while conforming to national and international guidelines. The conference is being held in Puducherry, a popular weekend destination close to Chennai, with its beautiful beacher’s, Puducherry brings together an electric mix of French colonial remnants, spirituality and Tamil culture in a simple yet cosmopolitan setting. Point-of-Care Ultrasound Improves Patient Safety

Point-of-Care ultrasound provided revolutionary feasibility in the treatment of critically ill-patients. Here, Dr. Deepak Govil, Associate Director, Institute of Critical Care, Medanta - The Medicity, Gurgaon shares how point-of-care ultrasounds have proved beneficial to the medical care

P

oint-of-care ultrasound is the use of portable ultrasound at a patient’s bedside for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Its invention has highly revolutionized the patient care in the medical world. Beyond the factor of cost-effectiveness, point-of-care has improved the efficiency of workflow by its compact size and simple-to-use features. The compact size enables the physicians to save space in the patient’s room and the features give a quick evaluation of the patient’s condition. Here, Dr. Deepak Govil, Associate Director of the Institute of Critical Care Medicine at Medanta – The Medicity, Gurgaon shares the assets of point-ofcare ultrasound systems, on how it has improved his work efficiency. Dr. Deepak Govil is the Vice President of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, an Examiner and Teacher for Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine, and a Board Member of WINFOCUS. Dr. Govil has a keen interest in using ultrasound in Critical Care and in teaching the usage of bedside ultrasound to medical fellows. Excerpts from the interview: When did you start using portable point-of-care—or what some call "bedside"—ultrasound? And how long have you been using handcarried ultrasound systems in your

practice? I started using hand-carried, point-ofcare ultrasound in the year 2006 but not on a regular basis. During the last two years, I have been using it extensively in almost every procedure in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Technological advancements—such as Multi-Frequency Probes and Color Doppler, as well as the introduction of new clinical applications of ultrasonography in critical care—have enabled greater usage of point-of-care ultrasound in ICUs. How has the point-of-care ultrasound proven useful with critical care patients? Its portability and accurate imaging can be very beneficial in improving the care of critically ill patients. Hand-carried ultrasound supports procedural guidance, pulmonary assessment, and focused echocardiography. This expedites my diagnostic procedure and helps to save patients from unnecessary exposure to harmful radiation through other types of diagnostic imaging tests. I think it is through the impact of advanced technology that the SonoSite system, a machine as small as a laptop, is able to aid me in making an accurate diagnosis. It allows me to perform focused point-of-care ultrasound scans on critically ill patients around the clock in the ICU.

What do you find most useful about portable ultrasound systems? We use the SonoSite M-Turbo system in our ICU, and its easy portability is its key distinguishing feature. Soon after purchasing the first system, I started noticing the impact it made on patient safety. Owing to its light weight, it can be carried directly to the patients [literally to the point of care]. This enables my medical team to make quicker and more informed diagnostic decisions and to perform safe and efficient interventional procedures. Past, Present and Future of CT Scan

Four decades ago, in an October, Computed Tomography was born. In the occasion, we talk to Bob Senzig, Chief Engineer for GE’s global CT group, in detail on the past, present and future of CT scan

O

n October 1, 1971, computed tomography (CT) imaging produced the first scan at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The image, performed on a cerebral cyst patient, proved it was possible to produce non superimposed images of an object slice. Godfrey N. Hounsfield’s development of CT is still as relevant 40 years on as the technique has evolved to become one of the most essential methods of radiological diagnosis. Its ability to provide non-superimposed, cross-sectional body images that are able to highlight contrast differences clearer than X-ray images is its main advantage. GE Healthcare’s Bob Senzig has been a witness to the milestones CT has achieved throughout his 31 years at the organization. In 2001 he was named Chief Engineer for GE’s global CT group. “The first CT scanners used to scan extremely slowly. Now CT scanners scan a lot faster. The image quality has made leaps and bounds over the years with higher resolution and clarity,” he recalled. “CT scanners have evolved to image the heart —one of the most difficult organs to scan—as a routine procedure.”

Advancements in speed, slice count, and image clarity have benefited cardiac imaging the most. These scanners now produce higher resolution images that allow physicians to diagnose patients and carry out medical procedures with greater confidence. It is this ability of CT technology to constantly adapt and evolve to ever-changing needs that has allowed it to be applied in other fields. Nowadays it is not uncommon for CT to be used for dental CT scans, scans that are focused on extremities, industrial inspection scans, or baggage scanning at the airport. The CT scanner uses X-rays to make digital images of objects in 3D. “CT imaging has been used to ‘virtually dissect’ specimens such as Egyptian mummies without damaging them. The images allow scientists to find out the age of the mummified remains, check for signs of disease and examine the internal structures of the body,” said Senzig CT’s ability to evolve and adapt indicates that it is a well versed technology to address current challenges posed by recent Healthcare-related Laws; the global

recession; radiation dose management; and an incredible growth in healthcare data in which clinical imaging has been highlighted as a contributor. One way that we can deal with all that data is to optimize the way it is reviewed and presented. Network speed also ensures that multiple scans can be quickly brought up for review. I think we’re also going to see more of an automated analysis, intelligence and assistance in the understanding of CT images to help reduce the amount of data needed to be analyzed by clinicians. Today, CT is an example of imaging innovation being at the cutting edge, where we are now seeing high-end scanners offering up to 320 slices, dual-source and dual-energy x-ray sources and iterative reconstruction techniques such as 3D visualization that have proven popular by providing additional clinical insights. What we’ve been able to do so effectively at GE Healthcare is to line up the technological capabilities and user needs,” said Senzig. “I think this has helped us to be a lot more impactful in the market by not being a company driven solely by technology, but rather a company whose technology is being driven by clinical needs.”
