3 0Flirty, Flirty, AND FABULOUS

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER | PHOTOS PROVIDED (UNLESS NOTED)

She made on-site hair and makeup the norm in the Capital District. Then, her salon garnered fame earning the reputation as Saratoga’s event day experts. Now, Alayne Curtiss is flirting with ecommerce and creating new ways to look great every day.

Alayne Curtiss was the girl in high school who, with Kaboodle in hand, did all her friends’ makeup at sleepovers. At that time, however, beauty wasn’t typically considered a career, so Alayne, a local native who grew up on 5th Street on Saratoga Lake, studied marketing at Southern New Hampshire University and worked for Clinique on the weekends.

Sitting around the kitchen table one day experimenting with the Fabulous Faces makeup line, the words – “Oh my god, make me fabulous!” were uttered and the impetus for the Make Me Fabulous salon was born.

16 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Alayne was more surprised than her family was that this would become her career, she said. “It was innate, it was just who I was, and they knew it.”

Alayne’s family is full of successful entrepreneurs; they owned a restaurant called the Ashgrove Inn, a car dealership, and a construction company. Alayne’s grandmother (an Italian immigrant who came to America at the age of 14 to help support her family of eight brothers and sisters) opened Mangino’s Ristorante, a wildly popular spot that finally closed in 2018 after 70 years in business.

A licensed esthetician and cosmetologist, Alayne opened the first Make Me Fabulous as a 300 sq. ft. space in Malta Commons. Leaving that location for one twice its size at 102 Milton Avene, Ballston Spa, they soon grew again, expanding into a 2200 sq. ft. space at 32 Milton Avenue, before moving into their current location, in 2017, at the former Pavilion Grand in Saratoga Springs.

STUNNING, CAMERA-READY LOOKS

On the path to becoming a hair and makeup specialist, the most valuable lesson Alayne learned came from her first commercial job experience, she said, when two women called to complain about her work.

“I made them look like what I thought they should look like, but what I learned was women want to look like the best version of themselves, not like someone else, and there’s such a fine line between the two.”

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 17

Following this new-found philosophy catapulted Alayne’s career and thrust Make Me Fabulous into the spotlight. The cover artist for a long list of local and national publications and two New York State governors, they have also consulted for NBC WNYT Newschannel 13, HGTV, The Today Show, MTV, VH1, and the prestigious New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. Make Me Fabulous has been named one of the country’s Hot 100 Salons, recognized as a local favorite many times, and has won numerous awards from respected online industry sites including the Knot and Wedding Wire.

SLAYING IT EVERYDAY

After three decades of figuring out which products performed best, working as many as 300 weddings a year, and being a brand ambassador for Bobbi Brown and Bare Minerals, the Alayne Curtiss Bridal Beauty Satin Shimmer line of lipsticks was released (each named for a Saratoga Street!!) in shades ripe for any occasion.

By asking the right questions, Alayne learned that her clients wanted more, so she developed Makeup Artist in a Box sets, that make it easy to achieve smooth, glowing skin for less than $150. This curated selection of 16 looks is created with prestige-quality ingredients, and these long-wear products come with instruction cards and video tutorials that take the guesswork out of DIY makeup.

Working directly with the manufacturers to create superior anti-aging blends was way more work than she ever imagined, said Alayne, but staying true to her goal of providing affordable, approachable color options has been yet another adventure that has kept her humble and relatable.

TRACEY BUYCE PHOTOGRAPHY TRACEY BUYCE PHOTOGRAPHY

Travelling the country for training and coaching, Alayne spent the last two years developing and documenting the systems in her company so that she may share her expertise in the art of aesthetics, cosmetics, and great hair. Using all the knowledge she collected over the years, Alayne has helped others including a spectacular million-dollar bridal services company in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

“There’s a client for everyone and no need in the beauty industry to discredit one another. Find where your expertise is and you’ll find your client,” said Alayne.

Stemming Out Of the Ordinary

With an Air of Romanticism

The dreamy allure of BRANCHES AND BLOOMS Floral Design

20 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com a Good Read | THE DETAILS!
The sky’s the limit when your florist is so passionate about the process that it becomes a concierge-level experience.

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER

By nurturing connection and communication with clients, Roxanne Marsh, the founder of Branches and Blooms Floral Design, conveys what’s in couples’ hearts.

“You find all sorts of inspiration from taking the time to talk with your clients,” she said. “I let my clients know what’s trending, but I remind them that it is their wedding, so let’s take a breath and let's create you!”

By being an attentive and engaged listener, she can confidently guide and educate you, and together, create the vision you imagine for your event. Pinterest pics may look great, she cautions, but often these bouquets are made from flowers with short lifespans that are not realistic for your wedding day.

“Through my work with florals, I quench my desire to create beautiful things and, at the same time, be of service to others.  For me, floral artistry has filled many areas of my being with satisfaction, joy, and fulfillment, that other avenues have not.”

ROXANNE MARSH saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 21

TIPS FROM THE PRO!

There are numerous things couples can do to help expand their floral budget, said Roxanne, the exquisite artist behind Branches and Blooms Floral Design.

•Try not to plan your special day during a holiday.  Prices of flowers always go up during holidays.

•Spend your floral budget on what is important to you as a couple while also keeping in mind where your guests will be spending the majority of their time, like at the dinner reception, and focus your attention on adorning those areas first.

•Repurpose the ceremony flowers, if possible, to other areas, to further your enjoyment of them.

AN ETHEREAL AESTHETIC

By layering graceful petals with towering stems and draping lush blooms with dazzling color, Roxanne creates stunningly expressive designs with timeless allure.

Her training came naturally from a childhood spent in nature. Pushing the boundaries foraging on long walks in the woods, Roxanne planted the seeds for stemming out from the ordinary when faced with challenges. For instance, when one lovely couple wanted rose petals thrown down the aisle, but the venue wouldn’t allow it, Roxanne instead tossed the petals on the reception tables (along with some scratch off lottery tickets!) for guests.

Helping her father, Thomas, tend his prized tomato plants gave Roxanne the know-how to care for her own lush cutting garden, which includes an abundance of 90+ Peony bushes exuding opulence with their eyecatching hues. If time allows, she’ll also grow special blooms there just for the bride!

22 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Roxanne also enjoys using the cheerful Helebores, attractive Anenomes, the multi-layered Ranunculous, and the conical-shaped Stock flowers (with their uniquely sweet, peppery-clove aroma) in her designs. Adding to this breathtaking array are vines, like Clematis and Jasmine. By using non-florals, like grasses, seed pods, berries, and branches, these bouquets, boutonnieres, ceremony, and reception arrangements define the essence of individuality.

Paired with a collection of vessels, votives, custom arbors and pedestals (made with the help of her talented and devoted husband, Glen) available to rent for any occasion, including grand opening celebrations, bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, and more, Branches and Blooms Floral Design creates magical moments sparkling with divine beauty.

For more information, follow Branches and Blooms Floral Design on Facebook.

UNVEILING THE LATEST TREND: PEACH PARADISE

The radiant Pantone color of the year is Peach Fuzz. “I do love peach - both the color and the fruit!  There’s nothing like a slice of peach pie and a good cup of coffee. My dog, Epic, would strongly agree with me, especially the peach pie part!” said Roxanne, owner of Branches and Blooms Floral Design.

In addition to the fruit trees, whose blossoming branches she uses in her designs, Roxanne grows giant creamy pink Café Au Lait dahlias in her backyard garden.

Brides looking to create subtly sensational arrangements can also choose from copious peach roses; from the old-world glamour of the Garden Juliet, to the delicate beauty of the Peachy Pink Shimmer, she said. Add coral and reddish pink florals to enhance the look, then throw in some contrasting chartreuse greenery, or the towering Blue Delphinium for impact so instant, it’s electric!

Enjoy the freedom of making your special day everything you’ve envisioned. Ashley Wilbur Photography captures the genuine sentiments, meaningful details, and the location’s inherent beauty in a way you will cherish forever.

“The reason I love what I do is that I get to give time back to people so that they can be present, put down their phones, and not worry about where the pictures are going to come from,” said Ashley. “These photos are the gift you give to people who you rarely see and those generations of people in the years to come.”

THE FLEXIBILITY OF CHOICE

Couples having Intimate weddings are truthful and intentional with their choices; the food, flowers, and the photography. Ashley’s approach is organic and candid, yet polished, and tastefully photojournalistic, edited in a style that is true-to-life, with clean colors.

Her location ideas and posing prompts result in artful portraits with infinite appeal. Having spent the last 13 years shooting weddings, Ashley’s experience runs the gamut; from micro-weddings with just three people, to grand affairs with 300 people at Boston’s glamourous Four Seasons.

“I have a wide range of experience with a lot of different types of weddings but I gravitate to the smaller, more intimate events so I can still offer high-end photography with shorter packages,” she said.

Ashley Wilbur Photography, a Better Business Bureau (BBB) certified company, offers a flexible pricing structure so couples choosing to go small receive a personalized experience within their preferred timeframe.

LOCATION? ANYWHERE

When you’re planning an intimate wedding, you’re open to choosing smaller venues bursting with character.

“For anyone coming here for their wedding I say, ‘You absolutely picked the right spot to get married’,” said Ashley. “The Saratoga, Lake George, and Albany region has so much history and architecture,” she said, adding, “I encourage everyone, whether they’re local or not, to look outside of the box.”

Consider choosing Saratoga’s regal Lincoln Bathhouse, the majestic Hiland Castle overlooking Lake George, or the rustic elegance of the Tavistok Lodge, a 1901 Great Camp in Elizabethtown at the base of the Adirondack Mountains, suggests Ashley.

26 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

SPONTANEOUS? SUPER!

Small weddings come straight from the heart.

“It’s more spontaneous and spur of the moment. I love the approach. It’s absolutely authentic. There are thoughtful details, fresh flowers in season, the dress is so meaningful, and they’re serving fresh, small-batch dishes to their treasured guests, giving these events a refined, personal, farm-to-table feel,” said Ashley.

“My own wedding was an intimate wedding. My grandmother made my dress and we chose to say ‘I do’ standing ankle deep in beach sand,” she said.

Ashley’s experience with her wedding photography, however, was less dreamy.

“I hired an officiant-photographer team. They showed up late to my ceremony and the photographer was wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt. I was mortified!” she said. “The photos came back very dark, and in a file size that is too small for printing. Now that I am a professional photographer and master editor, I still cannot salvage my wedding photos. I hold a special place in my heart for intimate weddings and elopements and I am here to let those couples know that they have options.”

MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

When looking at Ashley’s fine photography, the couple, their friends, and family are transported through memories to that time, bringing it all back for a little while.

For an even more rewarding experience, book an engagement or mini-session. This prewedding appointment will get the jitters out, advises Ashley.

“A bride has a trial-run with her hair and makeup, why not with the photographer?”

WORK those Bridal Shows!

It is that time of year again… People are getting engaged and are planning their dream wedding.  That means that Bridal Shows are in full force.  We have participated in many Bridal Shows over the years and would love to give you some Bridal Show Tips.

You might wonder why you should attend a Bridal Show.  After all, so much information is at our fingertips in the privacy of our own homes with the internet.  But simply put, the human interaction at a Bridal Show is a good way to determine who is right for you. It is a fabulous way to personally meet many different vendors in one spot at one time.

Bridal shows can be noisy, crowded, confusing and overall… pandemonium!  It can be easy to get lost in the craziness.  Do not give up!  Below are some tips for making your trip to a Bridal Show fun, easy and efficient:

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com a Good Read | WEDDING PLANNING
WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SUSAN BLACKBURN

Before you do any kind of event planning WHATSOEVER, establish a budget. Wedding expenses can add up quickly, so you need to figure out what your financial priorities are.  Maybe you want amazing photos, but don’t really care about the cake.  Perhaps your attire is the most important thing. Knowing what your budget is for each line item can keep you from spending time with a vendor who no matter how great, is simply out of your price range.

#1 #2

Most shows provide a program guide listing the exhibitors with a floor map.  Scan the guide to see who is attending and prioritize who you would most like to speak with.  Determine what your mission is at the show.  For example, if you already have a venue and a DJ, then you really don’t need to see any of those categories.  Speak with the high priority people first. Color coded Sharpie markers work great, i.e. blue for photographers, pink for florists, etc.–or whatever is visually easiest for you.  After you speak with each one, check them off so you know who you spoke with.  You can also jot down any notes or impressions you got.  Don’t forget that wedding planner!

Many vendors have raffles at their booths.  Save yourself some time (and possibly carpal tunnel syndrome!) by preprinting address labels with your name and contact information to stick on the forms.

#6 #7

If you live out of town–send your mom, friend, anyone you can trust to scout some things out for you.  Having someone do a little reconnaissance work for you can dramatically save time in the long run.

Ask questions–most vendors are proud of their work and really like to talk about what they do.  Vendors want to be helpful and give you great ideas on how to make the most of your special day.  It will also give you somewhat of an idea as to whether your personalities will work well together.

Enjoy the Show!

#3 #4 #5

You may want to book appointments with vendors for a more in-depth consultation, and be prepared to make a deposit, if you find a vendor you love and want to book on the spot.

You might want to bring color swatches or swipe files of different things you want to incorporate in your day.  This will give the vendors more of an idea of exactly what your style is.  These items can provide a great starting point for conversations and questions.

CClimb the stairs in the foyer of this beautiful Victorian-era brick building and indulge in the romance of Something Bleu Bridal - a captivating combination of the latest fashions and a unique setting.

Feel transported by the fine architectural details, intricate woodwork, and alluring spaces in this circa 1890 building, at 75 Woodlawn Avenue, just a block off Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.

After you pull your eyes away from the three ornate fireplaces in the Grant Plaza’s enchanting front ballroom, let them fall upon the racks of gorgeous gowns - dazzling with this season’s hottest styles - absolutely blooming with pearls, big bows, and large floral patterns.

“They are here, touch them, try them on. We want this to be a super welcoming and enjoyable experience,” said Brandi Solomon, Something Bleu Bridal’s new owner.

WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

Starting out in the bridal business when she was just 15 years old, Brandi said having the opportunity to run the long-established shop is a dream come true for her and her clients.

“I love the face a girl makes when she’s found the perfect dress; she has tears in her eyes – it’s a dream come true and that’s just the best feeling.”

32 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

A designer sales representative accustomed to traveling from Maine to Washington D.C., Brandi is taking what she learned from those years on the road and applying it to the shop, which was originally founded by Denise Eliopulos as the Bird of Paradise but underwent a change of ownership in 2018 when Marissa Mackay took over. Marissa, who had been a Something Bleu bride in 2010, now has two young children, ages 2 and 4, and was looking to make a career change. Brandi first looked at the space in September 2023, and after several months of mentoring from Marissa, officially took over ownership in January 2024.

“I definitely have huge shoes to fill but I’m up for the challenge. I bring the standards and quality of my personal experience in my attentiveness to the bride,” said Brandi.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 33

HISTORIC CHARM, MODERN CONVENIENCE

When a bride came in for a wedding that was just two weeks away, Brandi simply said, “We’ll find you a dress. We’ll figure it out. We don’t say, ‘no’ to anyone.” Although most brides don’t have quite such a tight timeline, Brandi said the trend now is for brides to shop later, and to spend less. In response, Something Bleu Bridal is now carrying dresses that appeal to every price range. They also work with designers willing to rush, and can recommend three seamstresses who reliably deliver, even in a crunch.

34 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Something Bleu Bridal remained open during their transition, and despite the change in ownership, has retained the same staff. Brandi is preserving the interesting character of this historic structure, applying fresh paint, and adding attractive furniture to create a clean, contemporary look.

Here, there is now something for everyone from their collection of elegant motherof-the-bride dresses from three different designers, and wedding gowns by eight designers, in sample sizes up to 24/26.

“I’ve seen it all and picked the brains of other shop owners to see what worked or didn’t. Something Bleu Bridal is on par with other stores in Saratoga and the location is perfect. We have a lot of brides who come for the track, from downstate and Long Island. There are a lot of stores down there but they like the quaintness of Saratoga and want that more personalized experience that we can give them.”

For information on Something Bleu Bridal, visit them on their updated website, Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram. Also, look for new Something Bleu Bridal video content, now on Tik Tok.

Natural Presence, Enduring Elegance

a Good Read | WEDDING KEEPSAKES 36 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER | PHOTOS PROVIDED
Like the sunset and the morning dew, fresh flowers are impactful but fleeting. After a short but beautiful bloom, their blossoms fall – but not always.

Today’s artful preservation of flowers is extending their limited lifespans, encapsulating these cherished wedding treasures into longer-lasting celebrations of life.

Roses, known by many different names; Infinity, Immortal, Forever, or Eternal, look so incredibly realistic you almost can’t tell they’ve been freeze-dried. Unlike fresh, these petals don’t thirst for water and attention. Because of their meticulous preservation, however, they’ll continue to touch your heart far longer.

“Dried does not only mean brown anymore, and that’s the greatest part,” emphasizes Fairytale Florist owner Karen Mott. Strawflower, status, celosia, rice flower, and hanging Amaranthus dry nicely, naturally, in an array of colors.

“Their colors are vivid, they should last a good year, and with protection, even longer,” said Karen. “Nothing lasts forever, unfortunately, but they can last a long time with proper care.”

EXCITING ALTERNATIVES

The careful creation of silk flowers has significantly improved through the years, adding such quality and realism that it can be challenging to distinguish them from their natural counterparts.

“Silk flowers truly have become so realistic that the only way someone can tell they’re not real is by touch,” said Karen. “This has been a progression through the last 20 years, but it’s been in the last decade that they’ve really fine-tuned the craft.”

“For the bride who wants to memorialize their wedding bouquet but doesn’t want to carry silk down the aisle, they can get a mock version made up,” she said.

That’s what Karen did for her own wedding. By gathering buds from several reputable sources, she finds the most reasonable representation of your fresh flowers in forms that maintain their vibrant appearance almost indefinitely.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 37

Placed in a shadow box or under a glass bell jar, these cherished keepsakes can remain on full display.

Other preservation methods, like pressing flowers with the invitations, document the day in a delicate way, while encasing petals in resin captures their boundless beauty with nearly immeasurable longevity.

“You can do anything with resin, it’s by far the easiest way to preserve flowers,” said Karen. Flowers suspended in resin and molded into everything from suncatchers, to coasters, paperweights, and even jewelry, give them a mythical feel. While engraving them with your monogram and wedding date makes them extra sentimental.

REACHING INTO EVERY REALM OF EMOTION

Adding life to wedding blooms is an intricate dance because it also adds to their cost, which is why Karen often recommends arrangements combining both fresh and dried flowers or mixing dried flowers with silk.

“Realistic silk and dried flowers cost more than their counterparts because it’s more of a process to get to that final stage,” she said.

Once you’ve picked your theme, repeating a stem several times is the more cost-effective option (because buying in quantity often comes with a lower price per piece).

Another interesting way to add texture and life to bouquets is to sprinkle non-florals into the mix. Berries are very popular right now, said Karen. For elements that add texture, variety, and uniqueness to designs, try Spanish moss, pinecones, lotus pods, peacock feathers, driftwood, and branches.

Always willing to try something new, Karen has created floral arrangements of all sorts; adorning dog collars, vehicles, and even horse drawn carriages.

From archways, to bouquets, to boutonnieres, no matter what kind of floral creation you’re hoping for, there’s always one thing you must do.

“If you want bridal flower preservation, the key is to plan, plan, plan,” said Karen. Once you’ve chosen your color scheme, it’s time to contact your florist, ideally eight to 12 months out. By starting the process in the same season you’re planning for your wedding day, you’ll be able to see what’s available at that time of year.

Wedding Planning Rustic

a Good Read | SWEET INSPIRATION
46 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

I love photographing weddings because I get to see a wide variety of trends. A huge trend in weddings for some time has been weddings with a rustic theme. This theme lends itself well to barns, fields and camp settings, which is perfect for our local region... the Adirondacks!

We have many rustic venues that are beautiful, quaint and picturesque, which is great because the term “rustic” can mean different things to different people. Rustic can encompass vintage, bohemian, country–you name it. But before you get all excited about the possibilities of Mason jars with wildflowers and bales of hay, you will want to think ahead and plan things through. A rustic wedding can be fun, but also a little (lot!) more work.

Here are some ideas and tips to help inspire you with your rustic wedding planning and make the process a little easier.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 47

RUSTIC WEDDING PLANNING CAN BE PRIMITIVE:

Most rustic venues are a little, well, primitive. That is part of their charm. It also means you may need to bring things in. As in: tables, chairs, China, etc. And did I mention restrooms? If your rustic venue is not all inclusive, you will need to budget for all these items. Before you put any money down on a Rustic Wedding Venue, be sure you understand what is and is not included in the price.

48 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com 1

RUSTIC VENUE = RUSTIC TERRAIN:

The terrain will likely be a little bit rough. Skip the stilettos and opt for comfort. Pay attention to what types of conditions you are asking your guests to navigate as well.

CHECK OUT THE LEGALITIES!

If your event is being held on private property, check the local rules for sound ordinances, traffic issues, etc. Will you need to obtain a special variance for your event? Also, some venues are simply renting their space and not taking care of permits, so be sure you understand what you need to take care of before the event. Police at the party would be memorable, but not in a good way.

WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS IN RUSTIC WEDDING PLANNING:

More so than at most venues, a Rustic Wedding Venue can have more challenges in terms of weather on the day. Make sure you plan for inclement weather. Umbrellas for guests in case of rain will be much appreciated.

CATERING ON PREMISES:

Will your caterer be able to bring the food in easily and keep it at optimal temperatures? Is there a generator on the premises? Is there running water? Who is responsible for cleanup and trash removal?

CLIMATE CONTROL:

In addition to having a plan for inclement weather, you need to also think about climate control. Barns and tents can become uncomfortable if you do not plan ahead! Is there a plan if the temperature is unseasonably warm or cold? Can you have fans or heaters, so guests stay comfortable?

Rustic Weddings can be beautiful and fun — just keep these tips in mind. Remember, a little planning goes a long way!

Party that Could Land the Big One! THEBachelor Bachelorette

Get hooked on big adventure that champions a liberating entrance into marriage.

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER | PHOTOS PROVIDED

For an unforgettable salute to singledom, experience the impeccable brilliance of life’s ability to triumph with trophy freshwater fishing charters for your bachelor and bachelorette parties.

“I’ve taken out bus drivers, baggage handlers, doctors, lawyers, and politicians. It’s something everyone from every walk of life loves to do,” said Captain David Lee. Mount the Excursion 3, a 28-ft. Penn Yan Predator yacht with twin 350 horsepower Mercruiser engines (originally owned by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department) for world-class fishing just three hours west of Saratoga.

FROM THE WATERS OF CHAMPIONS

Trolling up monster trout, salmon, and walleye on Excursion Charters, with an avid outdoorsman like Dave, makes for a great last hoorah (that often has his clients returning again and again).

Prized for their size, flavor, and fight, Lake Ontario’s Pacific Chinook and King Salmon have anglers flocking in to hook ‘em. These stocked varieties have taken to their environment in the last fifty years, making this unique intersection, where the St. Lawrence River meets the Great Lakes, into a worldclass fishery. Its waters are teeming with walleye, northern pike, lake and brown trout, smallmouth bass, and pickerel. These are fish with a power unlike that of those found in smaller lakes and rivers. They are muscled swimmers just as happy to take you for a ride as you are to pull them in.

LONGING FOR THE LAKE

Having fallen in love with big water when he was just a kid fishing with his dad, as a teenager, Dave started working summers on Lake Ontario at Henchen’s Marina and Fishing Camp (the preferred pick-up and drop-off locale for fishing charter captains). He then began working as a rigger helping fishing guides, got his US Coast Guard Captain’s license, and since the late 1980s, has been chartering his own boats annually, from April to Columbus Day.

Dave’s boat is equipped with five Cannon downriggers, two planner board mast and reel systems, numerous rod holders, and a plentiful selection of lures.

“I provide everything except licenses, food, and drinks. Just show up with your cooler and you’re ready to go. There’s a great stereo system on the boat, and it’s all about having a great time and a lot of laughs, regardless of the fishing,” said Dave.

Because different species are on the bite at different times of the year, Dave always has a plan B or C, he said, and because he is so well known in the area, he can also make personalized recommendations on lodging, local golf courses, and the different dining options that your group can experience here – all of which are on the water.

FUN – IT’S CATCHING ON

At the ready to make your adventure happen, it’s Dave’s excellent rapport with guests that has them coming back. Licensed to carry up to six, Dave’s fishing packages are priced for parties of four to enjoy half-day (4-hour) to full-day (8-hour) excursions.

Premier sportfishing excursions are not just great for the guys, Dave emphasizes, but for women and families, too. “Women are some of the best and most appreciative clients I’ve had on the boat. They like to have a good time, laugh, and be themselves. They like that there’s a bathroom on board and anything that I can do to make the experience more enjoyable, I’ll make it happen.”

Mothers of the bride or groom may not have shopped for a dress this important since their own wedding so finding the perfect dress again brings up intense emotions. Excitement, anticipation, and nervousness swirl with questions.

How do moms find a formal dress that doesn’t look frumpy?

A stunner that exudes sophistication, is flattering to the body, but won’t outshine the bride?

“It’s definitely a delicate balance,” said Laura Mullen, owner of the popular Lily Saratoga bridal boutique. “The mother of the bride or groom is a situationally important part of the bridal party. They don’t want to stand out too much but are seeing family and friends they haven’t seen in a while. They want to look their absolute best!”

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 63

After having moms and bridesmaids constantly inquire about dresses, Laura opened Lily Saratoga’s sister store, Styled by Lily Saratoga, a bridal party boutique, two years ago. Like the city of Saratoga itself, elegance is still approachable in this new building, conveniently located downtown at 25 Lawrence Street. The mother’s fitting area is adorned with comfortable seating and bathed in beautiful natural light.

On the other side of the space is another lovely area where bridesmaids try on their dresses, with four fitting rooms separated by a regal theater-style curtain that can be pulled aside to accommodate large parties. In the center of the store is the dazzling array of Styled by Lily’s 300+ dresses (50 in sizes 18-30), at least a hundred of which are designated mother-of-the-bride/groom styles.

64 | SARATOGA BRIDE | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com
We asked Laura for a few pointers to finding the dress that makes you feel fantastic.

# 1 - Follow the bride’s lead:

“Definitely wait until the bride picks her gown. The wedding gown sets the tone of the wedding – sometimes more than the venue itself. If a bride chooses a more formal gown, she may ask the bridal party to dress more formally, as well,” said Laura. After the bride, traditionally the mother of the bride chooses her style and/or color, and then it’s the mother of the groom’s turn. And moms, don’t shop together, advises Laura, make separate appointments - you each deserve to have a special day focused just on you!

# 2 - Complement for Compliments:

Once formality of the wedding is determined, color is next. “If the bridesmaids did not get their dresses from us, we often ask for a swatch or picture of the bridesmaid dresses so we can help the moms pick a color that will compliment and look cohesive in photos. A color like “Dusty Rose” can be translated very differently by each designer, so it is helpful to know what we are working with,” said Laura. Some brides are very particular while others are more flexible. “We have seen some brides want both mothers to wear the same colors, others are given a specific color to wear, and then others are given free reign!”

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com SPRING/SUMMER 2024 | SARATOGA BRIDE | 65

# 3 - Prepare but keep an open mind:

Each customer is asked to have an appointment and then sent a link to Styled by Lily Saratoga’s Pinterest page ahead of time, so previewing looks before an appointment can be done easily. “That being said, we encourage all our moms to be openminded. Things look very different on the body than they do on the hanger,” Laura reminds us. “It’s so much fun seeing a Mom try on a silhouette or style she didn’t think she would wear and absolutely fall in love with it!”

#4 - Timeless Grace:

Because the level of the wedding’s formality dictates dress length more than season, fulllength gowns reign at Styled by Lily Saratoga. These structured styles encourage moms to feel confident in fitted silhouettes rather than gravitating toward the more forgiving A-line styles. Another surprise –women baring their upper arms. “I’ve been finding a lot of moms are more comfortable not having their arms covered,” said Laura. For those that aren’t quite ready for that kind of freedom (or who want the extra warmth of a top layer) designers will use extra fabric to create a shawl or cover-up, when requested.

#5 - The finishing touches:

Want to get a better idea of how the total package will look? Styled by Lily Saratoga’s collection of accessories, jewelry, and shoes let you level-up any dress. Sashay into the celebration with silver or gold glimmering jewels – neutrals are more naturally versatile – for an unforgettable finishing touch.

To enjoy Styled by Lily Saratoga’s complete collection, make your appointment at least six months before the wedding day (although they can often accommodate you even if you only have a month!).

You’re elated! Now, let your face say it.

As the mother of the bride or groom, you won’t be able to avoid sharing some of the spotlight with your child, but looking good is something you do for more than just the photos.

“One thing everybody does is put the emphasis on their son or daughter and neglect the care they need to take for

themselves, to make themselves feel good, and to allow their true inner being – their radiant self – to come out. They forget that how they feel impacts the emotions of the person next to them and how the person across the table feels. This luminance radiates out, transforming the beauty, happiness, and environment around them. When they miss this aspect, they miss the opportunity to bring that joy and happiness to another person,” said Dr. Mark Moreau of Saratoga Smile

DR. MARK MOREAU

Care and Saratoga Facial Aesthetics, a comprehensive dental care office in Saratoga Springs that offers family and cosmetic dentistry as well as advanced, non-invasive skincare procedures.

Skincare is a natural extension of dental care, said Dr. Moreau. “They’re interconnected and interrelated. Dental health affects the overall health of a human.”

Wellness leads to wellbeing, he’s found, which is why he began helping clients with nutritional counseling and stress management techniques and has now added skincare to his practice. Saratoga Facial Aesthetics co-owner Leisha Washburn also offers Health Management Coaching, and with the assistance of a licensed aesthetician and registered nurse on staff, provides radiofrequency treatments, light therapy, injectables, and topical applications.

“We do these things because we enjoy giving the gift of a smile. That’s what mentally, physically, and emotionally motivates us. It impacts their quality of life and the lives of the people around them,” said Leisha.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During your FREE evaluation, in addition to gathering a medical history, Saratoga Facial Aesthetics works with patients in front of a mirror.

“We’ll ask, ‘Does her smile compliment her face?’ and ‘Does her face compliment her smile?’ We’re not just looking at the face’s lines, wrinkles, and blemishes,” said Dr. Moreau.

“What’s the first thing you see when someone smiles? It’s the teeth. So, we start there. Then we have the conversation about the opportunity to compliment the smile with facial aesthetics.”

SMILING ON LIFE

Because both Leisha and Dr. Moreau have more than 30 years of experience, education is also a key component of what they do. They only use the highest-grade medical equipment and facial care products, from the bibs on your chest to the best FDA-approved devices. They focus on quality, not quantity, so, in addition to learning what outcome the patient is looking for, they talk about the ripple effects of their actions.

“I expand their sense of awareness a little more so they can see other conditions they need to consider that they may not have paid attention to. I inform them what we see from a science-based evaluation and how that fits into the modalities of what we offer,” said Dr. Moreau.

With the groundbreaking non-invasive and painless EmFace © facial rejuvenation solutions, for example, they tighten skin by toning the facial muscles underneath. By starting at the foundation of loose, flat, or sagging skin, they provide a youthful, contoured appearance, reversing the signs of aging for a naturally refreshed look that’s more than just skin deep.

When what you want is out of their scope, they offer referrals to other trusted professionals in the area.

Slowing Down the Aging Train

As we age, we lose muscle mass and as collagen decreases, our skin loses volume and plumpness.

“Aging never stops but we can slow down that train,” said Dr. Moreau. As with an exercise program, skincare must be maintained. Schedule your evaluation for 3-4 months before the wedding, and after a handful of treatments, your skin will continue to improve. The effects could last up to a year. Post-procedure recovery is mild and temporary.

“Even with something as simple as teeth whiting, you’ll be smiling like never before!”

Every Age

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER | PHOTOS PROVIDED (UNLESS NOTED)

Standing by your child’s side as they embark on this new journey, you want to look your best. Whether you are going full glam or are choosing something more subtle, here’s how the mother of the bride and mother of the groom can get a look that they’ll love on their child’s wedding day.

Whether you want to experiment with something new or simply indulge (It’s a big day for you, too!) having your makeup done by a professional gives you a radiance that lasts the whole day through.

“Mothers of the bride and mothers of the groom are typically getting their makeup done along with the bridal party,” said Fawn Vandenburg, an award-winning licensed cosmetologist with more than a decade of experience, and the former owner of The Beauty Bar in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Bewitching eyes, dazzling lips, classic elegance, whatever the look is that you’re going for, Fawn’s pricing is per person, so anyone at the wedding (moms, aunts, cousins, etc.) can experience the precision of a professional.

UNFILTERED PHOTOS ONLY PLEASE

Inspiration photos found on Instagram, Pinterest, and other online sources aren’t as helpful a guide as bringing a photo of your daily makeup look to your appointment, said Fawn. Filters and editing tools produce photos that lead to unrealistic expectations of perfection. In real life, we aren’t flawless. Our skin has wrinkles and imperfections, so instead of praying that make-up will take these away and make you look 20 years younger, embrace your age - and your intuition.

“Moms get nervous that they won’t look like themselves, or that they’ll look too overdone, so I’ll do trials for moms, too. I’ll do trials for anyone,” said Fawn. “If they’re not having a trial done, that’s when I’ll really dig in and ask questions like ‘What are you normally doing for your makeup?’ ‘What colors do you gravitate toward?’ and ‘What’s your skincare routine?’”

GETTING THAT GOLDEN GLOW

For women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, less is more. In mature skin, makeup settles in the creases, looking cakey and actually enhancing imperfections rather than hiding them.

Instead, Fawn only adds touches to these areas and advises moms to go for a nice, natural glow with spray tanning. Fawn, a certified technician, recommends experimenting early, if possible, to finetune your skin tone’s ideal shade. Because spray tans last up to 12 days, get your trial tan done early, then schedule another appointment two-to-three days before the wedding to ensure your skin is lustrous and lovely for the big day.

LOCKING IN THE LOOK

Want to get rid of unruly peach fuzz while also diminishing fine lines? Dermaplaning gives you a rejuvenating, dewy appearance by exfoliating the top layer of skin and bringing a fresh, smooth layer to the surface, helping cosmetics adhere.

Another pro secret – setting sprays. After experimenting for more than a decade with different waterproof products, Fawn has found a light misting is the final touch with real staying power, for all kinds of occasions, from weddings and events to photo shoots.

Offering onsite makeup application and classes, in addition to personal “cosmetics shopping” Fawn makes sure you look phenomenal for every occasion. For more information, go to www.fawn-mua.com

Wedding Day

And… smooth, glowing skin takes time. Find a licensed esthetician with a lot of experience and a great reputation to evaluate your skin 9 -12 months before your big day. Wedding Day Skin is a journey.

It doesn’t matter how old you are (I’m talking to the brides AND the moms!!) Hydrated, smooth, and glowing skin is key. Here is your reference guide to get the skin of your dreams:

1. Book an appointment for a full skin evaluation and ask for a treatment plan. Be clear about your concerns and what you would like to achieve.

2. Make your appointments in advance (just like your other vendors).

3. Let your esthetician know what skincare you currently use. They may make recommendations for skincare that will better suit your needs.

• Dermaplaning safely exfoliates your skin AND removes that annoying, fine hair that can show up as shadows on your face.

• If your facial or body hair is dark, consider waxing, laser, or IPL to safely remove or permanently reduce hair on your face, underarms, legs and bikini area.

WRITTEN BY CRYSTAL COBERT-GIDDENS, LE PHOTOS PROVIDED

Venue. Dress. Flowers. Hair. Makeup.

Catering. Shoes.

That list keeps getting longer and longer and everything needs to be done so far in advance.

Many brides think about their makeup but don’t think about their Wedding Day Skin until the week before their wedding. Want a little advice? Prioritize skin over makeup. Your makeup artist is a pro and will make sure your makeup is perfect on your special day, but nothing makes you feel more confident than smooth, glowing skin.

• Do you hold stress in your face? Try a Buccal Facial. It’s extremely relaxing and can help contour your face, eliminate toxins, and reduce puffiness.

• Do you have brown spots (hyperpigmentation) on your face, neck, arms and hands? Try a series of chemical peels or an IPL treatment.

• Microneedling or Micro channeling can smooth out your skin, so your pores are invisible and looks like GLASS.

• Needles not your thing? Ask for Liquid Microneedling. Similar results and no needles.

• Do you have a tendency to break out, or are you acne prone? There are so many treatments that can help eliminate (or greatly reduce) acne before your wedding. It can take months to get it under control so make your first appointment soon.

• Avoid foods that are known to cause irritation, redness, or allergies. Dairy has been shown to cause tummy issues and breakouts. Spicy foods and too much alcohol can turn skin that tends to be a little red into cranky skin that can take weeks to calm down.

Find a professional that listens to your wants and needs. We are out here and truly WANT to help you have the most amazing wedding…Ever!

Buccal facial massage is an intraoral massage technique that is performed by massaging the inside of your cheeks and lips. This lower face sculpting treatment softens smile lines, enhances facial contour and releases muscle tension in the face.

Beyond the Wedding Day

Dance at the wedding without joint pain, enjoy life, then retire and play with your grandkids in the years to come - it’s all possible with functional nutrition.

Start with a food-first approach to create change, advises Sara Brown, a Physical Therapist, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and the founder of Core Restore Nutrition and Wellness. Reach your goal weight and eliminate bloating, as well as other complaints “normalized” by society (but that aren’t actually normal) with personalized recommendations tailored to your unique physiology.

When you work with Core Restore Nutrition, Sara will examine your diet, current lifestyle patterns, and blood work. She then recommends individualized, foundational, research-backed methods to ease your pain, low energy, autoimmune, and digestive complaints, allowing you to reach your goals.

In addition to feeling better, you’ll have more confidence, and will look amazing in those photos!

While preparing for a wedding or other special event is a great short-term goal to get healthier, dramatic weight loss and drastic changes aren’t sustainable, said Sara, and can actually set you up for hormonal dysfunction and a sluggish metabolism down the road.

Instead, focus on your future self with a manageable mindset shift that will have you changing your habits and feeling your best every day.

The best way to start, she says, is to add more color to your diet, prioritize protein, add fiber, movement, and get quality sleep. The weight loss, improved energy levels, and natural vitality that you will achieve are the real side effects of creating true health.

Our Story...

Dylan and I went to high school together, and reconnected in college home on winter break. We ran into each other out one night and started seeing each other. I started my last semester at college in Saratoga, and he would come visit me for coffee and dinner dates. Eight years, two long-distance summers in Alaska, three cats and two apartments later, he proposed at my favorite place, our family camp on Lake George. He tied the engagement ring, a family heirloom, to a bobber (he's a fisherman), and asked me to marry him in the middle of the lake while we swam. Although he had been planning it for months, I was completely surprised! Some of our friends and family surprised us later on in the day with an impromptu engagement celebration on the dock.

Two years later, we got married at the Queensbury Hotel. When planning, it was important for us to have the hometown feel, since we're both from Glens Falls. We also wanted a venue where our guests could stay. The Queensbury Hotel was not only the logical choice, but the perfect choice, with its historic touches and hometown charm. Planning was a breeze, and the team at the Queensbury was so accommodating and helpful every step of the way. For weeks after the wedding, guests and family were raving about the food! All of our vendors were great to work with. It was the best day!

Our Story...

Kevin (Chip) and I grew up on opposite coasts, he in New York and me… the state of Washington. When my best friend from college (Michaela) and her now husband (Josh) decided to move back to their hometown of Saratoga Springs and somewhat jokingly asked me if I would come with them, I surprised myself by quickly agreeing. I moved into a house with them, and Josh’s friend Chip started coming over 3-4 nights a week for dinner. I suppose that’s because Michaela and I studied Nutrition and Culinary Arts, and as Chip likes to say, we cook some of the best food he has ever eaten. In one of those first weeks, we made herb roasted chicken with gravy and roasted vegetables, and when we started eating, Chip began weeping tears of happiness at how delicious it was. I suppose you could say that's when we first started to fall in love.

We steadily became close friends over the next year before he (finally!) worked up the courage to ask me out. That was another easy YES! for me because I already loved him. Things escalated quickly from there and we moved into our apartment together a few months after that -in the early days of COVID.

Just before midnight on Christmas Eve 2021, Chip proposed with the most beautiful ring in a candlelit room while at my parents’ house in WA. When wedding planning, we knew we wanted wedding bands that felt personal to us and would stand the test of time. We ended up going to N. Fox Jewelers, and Debbie helped us create the wedding bands of our dreams. We described to her what we were looking for and she very patiently worked with us to draw up digital designs and even a 3D wax model, so we were completely confident in our choice. We had our rings engraved with our wedding date and they turned out even better than we could have imagined!

Our fairytale wedding was held at the Hall of Springs on the most unexpectedly beautiful 85-degree day in April, surrounded by our most favorite people from all around the world.

GETTING READY LOCATION: Adelphi Hotel REHEARSAL DINNER: Saratoga Golf and Polo Club

TOASTING GLASSES: Gossamer Glass Studio

• Marisa hand sewed NINETY-FOUR buttons down the back of her dress, designed and sewed the bow on the back, and made the veil!!

• The wedding day was the Mother of the Groom’s birthday, so there was an extra cake for her that was brought out during the toasts -and everybody sang Happy Birthday!

• Marisa is a food photographer and recipe developer, and both Chip and Marisa love to garden. As a nod to this, potted herbs were used as decor throughout, and the florist incorporated herbs into the centerpieces and Marisa’s bouquet and Chip’s boutonnière. The mint in Marisa’s bouquet grew roots and will now grow for years to come!

• To go with the herb theme, the couple made garlic-herb seasoning salt jars for the favors, and they received rave reviews!

• Along with the herb theme, specific pots of herbs were set up as a “garnish station” by the bar, so guests could pick their own cocktail garnish for the signature cocktails.

• The ring pillows were made from the fabric of Chip’s mother’s wedding dress that originally belonged to his grandmother.

• The Father of the Bride is a glassblower and made the custom toasting glasses for Chip and Marisa, as well as smaller goblets for the wedding party gifts.

• Chip’s Brother-in-Law officiated, and that created such a personal aspect to the whole wedding.

• Chip and Marisa wrote individual letters to each table of guests, thanking them for celebrating with them and letting them know how they have impacted their lives. We hear it was fun for the couple to write these letters to significant groups of people throughout the phases of their lives, including friends’ parents, and past and present bosses.

• Marisa did all the calligraphy including individual name cards and made all the wedding stationery.

• Chip did an excellent job choosing the engagement ring, and they both worked together (with Debbie at N. Fox) to design their wedding bands.

Our Story...

Donald (Tré) and I met in Las Vegas, where both were living and working. We made an instant connection over being so far from home, me being from New York and him being from Virginia. We also bonded over our shared interest in the outdoors, traveling, and of course, his dogs! Our relationship continued over the next six years, despite our demanding careers, job relocations, military moves, training, and deployments. All our free time was spent exploring the western United States from Texas to California. Mainly looking for good places to hike and play frisbee with our dogs.

In 2021, Tre’s career as a fighter pilot brought us to Germany. Germany quickly became very special to us. It was where we first lived together, where Tré proposed (Burg Landshut, a castle in Bernkastel-Kues), and where we held a small wedding ceremony on June 10, 2023 in the Bavarian Alps (Garmisch-Partenkirchen) surrounded by immediate family. Our time in Europe will always hold a special place in our hearts. However, Saratoga Springs was where I was born and raised, and where I had always envisioned getting married. So, we felt we would save the fun part of a wedding, the reception, for my hometown of Saratoga Springs. We held our "Happily Ever After" party at The 408 Event and Occasion on July 22, 2023. The event was an incredible way to celebrate with family and friends, and to experience downtown Saratoga Springs on a beautiful summer night during track season.

It's your day. Plan your wedding the way that feels right to you. We went a nontraditional route of envelopment/ micro-wedding. I didn't love the idea of a big traditional wedding. I was much more comfortable in our microwedding setting with only 10 guests. We had a small ceremony with immediate family, and then my husband and I went off to take photos with our photographer in the German Alps, followed by a nice private family dinner. This allowed my husband and I to spend more time with each other and our closest loved ones on our wedding day, and gave us a lot more flexibility with our schedule. We still wanted to celebrate with friends and family, but we saved that for a later date. By separating the two events, we got to have our special day at our pace and saved the fun part (the reception) for our friends and family back in the US.

Our Story...

"Dinner and Dancing”

Two simple acts that wove through Katie and Michael’s romance since the moment they met. Well, met for more than a passing hello. They both attended Siena College and while their circles overlapped, it wasn’t until a few years later that they truly met. A concert in Albany was the stage - and as cliche as it seems, the spotlights lit the pair in a way that felt like something at first sight. Their conversation led the pair away from dancing and into a diner to share grilled cheese and stories until their friends pulled them their separate ways. Texts and calls turned into the first date and as Katie would come to quickly learn - food was important to Michael. New World Bistro was one of his favorite restaurants and a place where exciting flavors turn into exciting stories. That’s one of Michael’s favorite notions about sharing a meal: The places it can take you or the way a familiar taste can stir up memories. They shared their dishes and their thoughts, dreams and bits of their history. Found similarities in their families and values. After dinner, Michael left Katie with a first kiss and a request - to join him as a date to his good friend’s wedding…next weekend. It was a long shot - some may say crazy - but there was that something they both knew the other could feel. That pull at your chest the moment you part ways. She said yes to the wedding, but in that moment to Michael it felt like “I do.”

They danced at the wedding, at shows, on vacations and in their living room. They explored new cities and tried the best food each had to offer. Their families met and their friend circles entwined. Their love was easy, comfortable, and warm. Job opportunities pulled them away from the Capital Region and to New York City. A small loft in the upper west side with an even smaller kitchen was still enough space for Michael to cook Katie her favorite meals - carbonara, amatriciana, Bolognese. She really loves his pasta.

A few years of dancing and dining across the city, Michael and Katie returned to their new home in downtown Troy. A vacation was planned together with a few small details withheld from Katie. He spent nights secretly working on booking a photographer, a beachside sunset dinner, and the perfect place to ask her. With everything in place, Michael still had the

challenge of finding a moment away to ask for her parents’ approval. This would come the day before they left with a firm shake of her father’s hand and an emotional hug from her mom. Michael knew he wanted to ask her early in the trip and probably wouldn’t have survived the butterflies he felt for much longer. On the day he planned to propose, Michael went to retrieve the ring hidden in their safe and was met with electronic letters spelling out ERROR. Dinner was fast approaching, the photographer strolling the beach waiting for his cue and Michael had to get Katie out -to get a repairman in!! …Aperitif?

While they shared some small bites and drinks, Michael was also bouncing between the front desk, security, and maintenance to crack the safe. When he returned to her with ring in pocket, she hadn’t noticed a thing. The engagement was a welcome surprise to Katie and the rest of the night felt like a dream. They shared tears of joy at dinner and danced on the beach.

The old saying, “don’t plan a wedding during a pandemic” must have been forgotten by these two as they began looking at details for their perfect day. They both agreed on what was most important: dinner and dancing. They wanted a meal for their friends and family that felt like a celebration, with seasonal ingredients and shared plates that made guests interact and tell their own stories. They wanted music, from arrival to exit, that brought life into the event - their life together - and would have tables cleared to dance the night away.

The first venue they visited, The Sablewood, was the one they compared every other venue to. The beautiful grounds, outdoor space and picturesque surroundings were perfect. On the day of the wedding, a rain-filled morning broke for a private reading of vows by the pond on the property and as guests arrived an hour later, the sky turned blue. The food, customized from Nicole’s Catering was outstanding. And the music from Conway Entertainment - pulled from a playlist Michael and Katie curated had all the right notes. All the concerns, stress and contemplations leading up to the wedding washed away and they surrounded by the ones they loved, Michael and Katie came together for a perfect night of dinner and dancing.

Our Story...

Andrew and I met the Summer of 2019, at a little dive bar up in Lake George. My parents live up there and my brother wanted to go out for his birthday and meet up with some friends, so I decided to tag along. I ended up meeting Andrew there for the first time, not realizing that we not only had many mutual friends, but that my brother was one of them! I remember going home that night and asking my brother “who is that Andrew guy?” and the rest is history.

Despite crazy work schedules and busy summer plans, we had our first official date in September. Since that first date, we attended 14 weddings together, spent summer weekends up in Lake George, and enjoyed all that Saratoga has to offer.

After three years of dating, Andrew proposed atop a hiking trail that my family typically hikes once or twice a year. I could not have been more shocked or surprised, and it was so special having my family there, as well as his, who were hiding in the bushes!

When it came time to planning our wedding, we knew we wanted to be in the heart of Saratoga Springs. We instantly fell in love with the history and classic charm of The Adelphi Hotel. We are so grateful to Connie at The Adelphi and every single one of our vendors who helped make our wedding day absolutely perfect. Our day was filled with so much love, and it was a really amazing feeling to have all of our loved ones together in the same room, celebrating us. Our wedding day was truly everything we could have dreamed of and more!

Our Story...

Our love story began in the summer of 2019 with Chris having to extend his vacation time at home in Albany from California for a week because his race car broke down and it needed fixing. Originally, Chris is from the Albany area, but at the time he was living in California to work on his career and had no intentions on coming back home to live...especially to deal with NY winters. That very same week by coincidence, Chris and I met on the boat of mutual friends on Saratoga Lake. Being this was our original meeting place, Saratoga Springs was very special to us from day one.

It wasn't until later that night that Chris and I engaged with one another. I was at the "Publik House" pub in Saratoga with my friend group when someone announced that another "boat group" was coming to join us. There was no room in the booth besides one spot next to me, where Chris sat. My first impression of Chris was that he was this loud Italian guy who wouldn't stop talking. When he was trying to decide between a "New Yorker" and a "West Coast” late-evening pizza, I said, "Well, you don't even live here, so go with the West Coast." This is why pizza will always have a special place in our hearts. We left that night without exchanging our phone numbers, but I knew I liked him. By happen stance, we ran into each other again the weekend following at Gaffney’s Bar -also in Saratoga Springs. Chris and I shut down the bar that night dancing the night away and then ended up at a diner in town for breakfast.

Our love story started with a bunch of "chance" meetings, but my favorite one was when I called a random realtor, and Chris picked up the call and impersonating the realtor asked me on our first official date! This had to be the work of a higher power -or divine intervention! Ultimately, Chris' one week home, turned into four months and four months… into forever.

After three years of dating, we got engaged on May 13th after the Greek Festival in Albany, surrounded by friends and family. It was quite ironic because we went to Greece for our honeymoon after the wedding too! After visiting many venues, we chose one, and after about 8 months in changed it. We changed it to the Hall of Springs in the heart of Saratoga. It was where we first met, where my grandparents had their 40th wedding anniversary and it felt more like us.

Our wedding day could not have been more perfect. From the music to the flowers and elegant finishing touches on the tablescape, to the red carpet I walked down the aisle on, we felt like royalty at the Hall of Springs. We had one of the only days this summer that didn't rain, I knew I could have attributed that to my grandma shining down on our beautiful day. Along with the help from our A-Team Vendors, surrounded by our family and friends we had the best day and one we will remember forever.

REHEARSAL DINNER: Forno Bistro on their outdoor private patio

HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS & "GET READY" LOCATION: The Adelphi Hotel

WEDDING CUSTOM MONOGRAM: SBM Event Co.

Some of the special touches that made our day was driving around in the grooms dad's old 1966 Corvette. The Corvette was baby blue and was our something borrowed, something old, and something blue. We also got married at The Hall of Springs in Saratoga Springs, NY. Orginally, we were supposed to get married at a different venue, but we didn't feel like it was quite "us." A few months before our wedding my Grandmother passed away, we had confirmed our new wedding venue in February and found out later that my Grandmother and Grandfather had their 40 year wedding anniversary at the Hall of Springs. We knew then it was meant to be. We had a private dance during our reception to the song "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brother which was in honor of my Grandmother. My Grandmother and Grandfather danced to this song in the same exact spot in the ballroom during their wedding anniversary. It was a great way to remember my grandmother. I also had a piece of her wedding gown sewn into mine. We also gave our mothers white roses to honor them and thank them during our ceremony to show us what real love and happiness in life looks like. Lastly, we shared a private last dance with only the two of us in the room to "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John. We often danced to this song in our kitchen and it was really a song we both could sing, have fun and dance to. It was just us and the band, a surreal experience we are forever grateful for. This was the best way to end our special day with just one another in our moment.

advice

to pass along...

As cliche as it sounds, the day does in fact go by so fast! My husband and I had made an agreement to stay by each other's side the whole night. It was our day, and we wanted to make sure we spent it hand in hand the whole night. It made our day and we'd never look back and say we didn't spend enough time with one another on OUR day. Make your rounds and just live in all of the moments both big and small.

Our Story...

Doug and I met on our company's soccer team. I had just started a new job in Boston, and so I joined the team to meet new people in the office. As fate would have it, I was also meeting my teammate for life.

Doug and I developed a fast friendship on and off the soccer field since we both also had a habit of working long hours. Doug would "casually” pass my desk when we were working late, and we sometimes talked for hours. After a year of soccer games and getting to know one another, I accepted a new job. Doug asked me on a date before I left (finally!), and three years later, he asked me to marry him. The proposal was under a beautifully lit archway in Boston called "The Tunnel of Love."

I always knew I wanted to go back to my hometown to get married – specifically the Canfield Casino in Saratoga Springs, where my parents were married 36 years earlier. While we looked at Boston venues before touring in Saratoga, it came as no surprise when Doug was equally enchanted by the Canfield Casino's beautiful ceilings and historical relevance. Our wedding weekend was truly magical, and we loved introducing our guests to Saratoga during the best time of year (track season!). We are so grateful to our wonderful vendors who helped us celebrate with all the people we love most. Just as Taylor Swift sang for our reception entrance, "Today was a fairytale!"

• My parents were also married at the Canfield Casino, so it was incredibly special for me to celebrate my wedding with them at the Canfield Casino 36 years later. We included wedding photos from both sides of our family in the Parlor Room as cocktail hour décor, including photos from their 1987 Casino wedding.

• We wanted to impress our guests with a "true Saratoga experience," because most of them were from out of town. We started with the rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks at The 408, where they were able to view Broadway on a lively Friday night. We then took them to the heart of downtown Saratoga for our Saturday wedding at the Canfield Casino and Congress Park, followed by the after party at Henry Street Taproom. Before we said goodbye, we hosted a "Day at the Track" on Sunday, where many of our guests enjoyed watching (and betting on!) their very first horse race at the Historic Saratoga Race Course. We loved that it gave us more time to celebrate with our family and friends!

• Our welcome bags for the guests included tourist-friendly maps of Saratoga, where we circled the location for each wedding weekend event. We also included an array of Saratoga signature goodies, such as Saratoga water and Saratoga chips.

• We wanted our signature drinks to reflect our personalities and our love of fun cocktails. The "Bride Barbie's Bubbly" included edible glitter and pink cotton candy, while the groom's "Marry Me Margarita" had jalapeños and a spicy kick!

• We found some fun ways to incorporate my love of the color pink after everyone had moved to the dance floor. We turned the Casino lights pink, our band members changed into pink dresses and tuxedos, and I changed into a rose-gold sequined dress with sparkly sneakers - it was so much fun!

• For our rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks, the cocktail napkins included fun facts about us and our relationship. The guests loved trying to find all the different facts and using the facts to spark conversation.

• Instead of a traditional guest book, we asked our guests to sign the the mat frame of a Canfield Casino print that we found at Crafter’s Gallery Saratoga. We now have a beautiful, personalized keepsake of our special day to hang on our wall.

• For our church exit, we used wedding wands with streamers in our wedding colors for all our guests to wave. It was so much fun to walk past our family and friends cheering and waving their wands as we got on our trolley!

advice to pass along...

• Work together as a team. Wedding planning can be the ultimate group project with your partner, so try to make it fun and enjoy the journey leading up to your special day.

• Stay true to who you are; we focused on choices and experiences that reflect who we are both as individuals and as a couplewhich made it feel so much more special to us and our guests.

• Mentally prepare yourself to enjoy your day, regardless of the curveballs that are thrown your way. It started pouring rain right when we were supposed to take photos, but we ended up getting some photos inside and then some post-storm photos outside - so it totally worked out. When you remind yourself that it's your wedding day and that you get to marry your best friend, truly nothing can bring you down.

Our Story...

Our relationship began in college at Western New England University. After graduating, Beau got a job that required he relocate to Boston. For several years, we lived an hour and a half apart and spent any weekend we could together. After having enough of Sunday goodbyes and hours on the Mass Pike, I moved and we started our life together in Boston.

Fast forward a few years, Beau got down on one knee at the beach during golden hour when we were in Anna Maria Island on vacation. I couldn't believe the amazing surprise he pulled off. When it came time to pick a location for our big day, The Inn at Erlowest was an easy choice. I vividly remember the first time Beau brought me to Lake George. I spent my whole life being a “beach person”, but there was something about this lake that I immediately fell in love with. We spend a lot of time together there, so we couldn't think of a more perfect place to celebrate our wedding.

The forecast leading up to our wedding day looked terrible. After coming to terms with the fact that it would rain all day, the sun came out minutes after our first look. Our wedding was more amazing than we could have ever imagined, surrounded by our closet family and friends with incredible music, food, and a beautiful lakefront setting. We are so grateful for all of the amazing vendors who helped make our dream become a reality.

special touches...

I wore my grandmother’s garter belt, worn by generations of women in my family at their weddings. There was a shelf at our reception with wedding photos of our parents and grandparents and a sign that read “The Love That Built Us”. Having simple yet meaningful tributes to family members made the day feel even more special.

advice to pass along...

Channel your energy into the things that you and your partner deem most important. So if that’s making sure your tables are set up a particular way, ensuring a certain song plays during cocktail hour, OR that you decide you need an ice cream truck one month before the big day – DO IT! It’s your day, go with your gut.

Our Story...

Zach & I both grew up in Rotterdam. Zach knew of my father, Mark, through work and business. Zach knew Mark had a son, Mark Jr., but never knew he had two daughters as well.

Typical of small-town life… while just a kid, Zach remembers seeing my dad working on a house in his neighborhood – digging and doing excavating work.

Fast forward many years later - when my hairdresser mentions this guy. She and her husband are friends with him and want us to meet. Around that same time, my cousin Chris -and this guy Zach- were close friends. One night my cousin Chris texted my sister and I to stop by the house. I was so not up for going out as I was in bed already, but sure enough my sister dragged me out of bed. Long story short, he knew my cousin and uncle and met me at the perfect time.

After dating a little over a year, he proposed at my parents’ beach at their camp on Sacandaga Lake, complete with scattered rose petals and fireworks -of course! The night was just so perfect, and the sunset was gorgeous. My sister and friend Jess helped him set everything up before we got there and we celebrated that night.

Having our own wedding venue was exactly what we dreamed of. Zach, family, and close friends spent all spring and summer building us the venue for our special day. It was unique and fit us perfectly. We couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out. Everything was perfect, not a thing went wrong. We can't thank our parents enough for everything they did to make our day so special and for the love and support from our friends and family. We are so thankful to all our wedding vendors that helped make the day what it was. We will forever cherish our special day!

Our Story...

Brian and I met while working in New York City and living a block apart in Hoboken, NJ. Our first summer of dating included many trips up to Saratoga and the Capital Region, where I am from. Saratoga instantly became one of our favorite places.

After three years of dating, Brian popped the question at the Chanler Hotel on the Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island while our families secretly were waiting for us! It was a dream!

Even though we lived in Hoboken, we had been dreaming about a Saratoga wedding (while reading Saratoga Bride!) since that first summer together. We looked at several venues around the area and instantly fell in love with the Hall of Springs from the first drive down the Avenue of the Pines.

We knew we wanted a black-tie affair, with a band. We wanted an outdoor ceremony near the Reflecting Pool, a cocktail hour on the Portico and to end the night with an after-party in the Jazz bar.

Our wedding day was absolutely perfect! We had a beautiful, sunny, 70-degree day. Our dream team of vendors brought our vision to life perfectly. We feel so lucky to have spent the day with our friends and family who traveled near and far to celebrate our love.

Real Bride | BROUGHT TO YOU BY… FORT WILLIAM HENRY

Our Story...

Nathan and I met in college at Saint Michael’s in Colchester, VT in 2017 after my twin sister, Megan, introduced us at a house party. Via twin intuition- she could tell I had been crushing on a particular hockey player at school. Although if you ask my friends, my college crush was no secret!

We dated for 5 years before getting engaged on October 15th, 2022, in Congress Park, Saratoga Springs. It was a beautiful, warm fall-foliage day. Nathan’s sister Nicole surprised us in the park as our disguised photographer and our parents planned an intimate celebration that evening. After a couple weeks of being engaged, we adopted the “why wait” mentality. Fort William Henry was the first venue we toured. The Carriage House was undergoing renovations at the time and all we could see was potential. The layout, location, staff, accommodations, and wedding package made our venue feel like home. With family traveling from 17 states, the hotel housed all our guests, who loved the lake views and proximity to downtown Lake George.

We got married on October 7th, 2023, and the newly renovated Carriage House was perfect! Showcasing stunning landscapes, a timeless interior, moody candle lit ambiance, neutral florals, and a Saratoga Racecourse themed decor. We chose a Saratoga quarter pole as our guest book and a racing themed seating chart to incorporate our beloved Spa City. Saratoga is a place and community that brings people together, and our wedding day upheld that feeling. The staff was extremely attentive and the food was Michelin star level. Although it rained, Fort William Henry quickly pivoted to execute a smooth, romantic indoor ceremony for us. Our vendors, family and friends made our day so incredibly special, engraining beautiful memories that we will cherish forever. I can’t think of a better place to celebrate the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Our Story...

Kyle and I are both from the Capital Region an hour away from each other most of our lives, I grew up in Saratoga Springs while Kyle grew up in Averill Park. We didnt meet until college at the University of Connecticut through mutual friends. We were friends at first but it quickly became something more and looking back it all feels meant to be.

After graduating college we both moved to New York City with our friends, and our relationship grew from young love to forever commitment. We moved in together in 2021 and Kyle proposed a year later on the rooftop of our apartment with a surprise engagement party afterwords.

We still live in New York City in that same apartment, but we wanted to have our wedding upstate where we have spent so much time together with our families over the years. We had lunch at The Sagamore a few weeks before getting engaged and knew then that it would make the most beautiful wedding venue, with the breathtaking views of Lake George and we loved that it could host all our guests on-site.

Our entire wedding weekend felt like a dream, we had beautiful fall weather and felt surrounded by so much love. A touching ceremony followed by the most fun reception with our family and friends. We are so thankful to The Sagamore and all of our vendors for making our wedding better than we could have hoped.

The Last Word... RenewedLove

We had been married for 10 years, dating since we were in our late teens and as the real world tends to go, everything fell apart after covid. Like a runaway train that couldn't get back on track, we fell and fell hard, the weight of life… hurt, unspoken feelings and emotional decisions became just too heavy to bear. We had the world's fastest divorce -within 2 months! At that time, I moved out. We were actually divorced before we lived separately.

A few months after living apart, allowing the dust and emotions to settle, we knew we had made a horrible decision. But from rock bottom, it allowed us space to re-look at our lives, our relationship, what we wanted/didn't want in life and say everything that had gone unsaid for years. It was quite liberating. What else did we have to lose?

From that place we rebuilt trust, created new goals and dreams, and decided we were still each other's forever person. After a year of slowly working on ourselves and

our relationship, Adam asked me to remarry him with our two girls (8 and 10 yrs. old) by his side. We got married a few months later in a small intimate ceremony on the 36-acre farm we had recently purchased (part of our new life together plan). Our ceremony was held exactly where our new house will be built!

Our second marriage truly feels like a NEW relationship. We had grieved who we were, and we are now entering into a new life, new relationship and new love knowing exactly what it feels like to do life without the other.

I am now the person my friends come to, to do some real talk about relationship issues. The fairytale I believed in and held so dear - working in the wedding industry - all vanished before my eyes. But what I was left with was so much deeper. Vows that meant so much more.

And a life partner I can count on for long after the wedding day.
