Waterford - Underwear Capital of America by Russ VanDerwoort | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com The Town of Waterford’s population in 1910 was said to be 6,128. Of that number, approximately 1,700 worked in the twelve knitting mills making underwear! There were four other knitting mill operations that did not produce underwear; they employed 220. One-third of the overall population worked in the industry. Ruling out minors, the percentage would be even higher. By 1912 and continuing until the 1950s, underwear was Waterford’s largest export item. Two of the Waterford manufacturers had pressing questions for the underwear-buying public. Have you been bothered recently by dangerous underwear fads? Do You need to purchase underwear in a larger size because it shrinks? The Kavanaugh Knitting Mill, owned by the Kavanaugh family, was the largest factory, with 600 employees. Their business was built on the following belief. Men who demand cool, comfortable garments and who appreciate good health avoid dangerous underwear fads usually wear the famous Kavanaugh Balbriggan. The comfortable underwear. Just loose enough to avoid the pinch, just light and soft enough for cool comfort, just weight enough to protect against sudden cool breezes. This advertisement also featured caricature images of the Rough Riders. Charles Kavanaugh was a personal friend of Teddy Roosevelt. Kavanaugh provided all the underwear for the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War John Wheeler Ford, in 1891, the same year as the Kavanaugh mill, opened Ford’s Mill, or Ford’s Manufacturing. It was later purchased by the Robert Reis Company. Their main products were tee shirts and men’s and ladies’ undergarments. Their claim was as follows. Reis’ Union Suits, we’ll put you wise; you needn’t buy them oversize. The size mark on Reis’ Lavender Label means precisely what it says. All athletic underwear shrinks when first laundered. Instead of pretending that it doesn’t. Reis, frankly, allows for

shrinkage. So you needn’t buy a 42 when your size is 38 or a 38 when your size is 34. It’s sized right in the first place. Reis, you see, doesn’t skimp on material. Yet, for all the roominess of a Reis, they are tailored to fit. It doesn’t flop around you like a sail or wrap you up like a bug. They fit, and of course, they don’t chafe. They are made for a man, not a wax figure. Reis’ Mill lasted the longest in business until 1979. Their main office was in the Empire State Building. The bulk of their manufacturing was conducted at Ford’s Mill in Waterford. During World Wars I and II, they held contracts to supply underwear to the United States Army. The employment there was listed as 300. During the first half of the 20th century, the Harmony Mills in Cohoes and the Ford and Kavanaugh Mills in Waterford all had military contracts that impacted their ability to produce, distribute, and sell civilian supplies. The others were quick to fill the void. In the second half of the 20th century, with the wars over, the Ford Mill, now Reis, but still known as Ford’s Mill, returned to normal operations. By the mid1950s, they were the only one left. All the others had gone out of business. Of the twelve mills that were listed that produced underwear, several had majestic brick buildings. They are now all gone, with the exception of the Laughlin Textile Mill, which is vacant. It was the headquarters for Ursula of Switzerland. Ursula passed away recently. That marked the closing of the textile industry in Waterford. How was Waterford able to become one of the Mohawk Valley’s major producers of underwear? Waterpower was the top priority in the development and location of textile mills which was abundant in the Waterford and Cohoes area. The Mohawk River, and in Waterford the King’s Canal, provided plenty of rushing water, the humidity was sufficient for spinning, access to seaports was convenient with the Erie and Champlain Canals, and there was an abundant labor supply. For these reasons, the textile industry took root across

the northeast, along the Mohawk River valley, and especially at the terminal point of the canals in Waterford and Cohoes. In 1855, Clark Tompkins, from Troy, NY, patented the first fully mechanized knitting machine. The upright rotary knitting machine relied on mechanical advances not available until the 1840s. In many ways, this invention foretold the industrial future for the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys. By 1890, Mohawk Valley had become the number one knit-goods manufacturing center in the country. New York knit-goods manufacturers primarily produced underwear.Two-thirds of all underwear produced in the United States in the late 19th century was made in New York, and of that, a large percentage came from the Mohawk Valley. In 1909, The Knit Underwear Industry reported that New York State produced 33.5% of all knit goods in the United States. With the opening of the King’s Canal in 1830, Waterford successfully harnessed the power available from the Mohawk River. The King’s Canal area became heavily industrialized, with more than half of the underwear manufacturing concerns listed located. Kavanaugh made mention of Dangerous Underwear Fads. The Utica Brand underwear company asked, tired of underwear fads? Many hours were spent searching newspapers for those fads. Following are some of the underwear fads that appeared between 1890 and 1940. I found evidence of the underwear that doesn’t have to be ironed. Material fads of fine rayon mesh, nalmook, and crepe. A no underwear fad. A black underwear fad during the Depression to cut down on washing. A pretty underwear fad. Silk underwear. Colored underwear. Dr. Diemel underwear fad. Velvet underwear fad. In 1929, a lightweight underwear fad was to blame for hospital admissions. None seemed particularly dangerous unless you were in Illinois, where in 1929 lightweight underwear apparently caused hospitalizations, and the wearing of silk underwear was successful grounds for divorce.

VCHC: HELPING VETERANS MEET THE CHALLENGES OF LIFE HEAD ON Sumbitted by The Saratoga County Alliance to End Homelessness • for Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA COUNTY — For those men and women that faithfully served our great nation, it is disturbing to think that on any given night in this country 50,000 veterans are without a home. The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is an annual effort led by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to estimate the number of Americans, including veterans, without safe, stable housing. It is one of the tools used to assess progress each year toward Veteran’s Administration’s (VA) priority goal of ending homelessness among veterans. According to the PIT, the estimated number of veterans experiencing homelessness in America declined by 55.3% from 2010 to 2022. Despite this success, tremendous effort, and significant funding provided to address the issue of veteran homelessness, the issue continues to persist and requires unwavering commitment and attention. The Saratoga County Alliance to End Homelessness is committed to preventing and ending homelessness in all forms and is focused on supporting agencies like Veterans and Community Housing Coalition to positively impact veteran experiencing homelessness. Since 1983, the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC) has made it their mission to ease the suffering that homeless veterans face here in the Capital District. VCHC uses a multi-faceted approach with an array of different programs and services to serve those that

bravely served us. One such program is the Saratoga Veterans Apartment Program, S.V.A.P., which provides affordable housing to veterans experiencing homelessness through 19 units scattered throughout Saratoga County. Subsidized rent and supportive case management is provided to the veteran while he or she transitions from homelessness to stable housing. Having the pride of serving your country and then finding oneself in a state of homelessness can be an overwhelmingly stressful time. Many veterans not only face financial challenges but also mental health challenges and an ever-growing competitive job market. A veteran may have to learn how to acquire a primary care provider, a dentist, or assistance in obtaining life insurance. These services were previously provided by the military, once service ends it is up to the veteran to acquire these services. A veteran may also need to navigate the paperwork and process of obtaining benefits and services from the department of Veterans Affairs, and in many cases, veterans are not even aware of the benefits that they are entitled to. This is an all too common issue with veterans that have just separated from service and for our aging veteran population, which can significantly contribute to losing housing and becoming homeless. VCHC Case Management works to complete the objective that all veterans within the program have the support and knowledge to navigate the

ever-changing world. Case managers can assist in applying for SNAP benefits for the veteran, navigate obtaining benefits through the VA, assist in providing transportation to and from medical appointments, resume

building and interview coaching. The goal of VCHC is to help our veteran population meet the challenges of life head on. To serve those that served is not a choice as proud Americans, it is our duty. If you know of a

veteran who is struggling and needs assistance with housing, or other issues, VCHC and the Saratoga County Alliance to End Homeless wants you to know there are caring professionals who are ready to help and serve.

SARATOGA COUNTY — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, announced three bills to support libraries statewide have been signed into law. The pieces of legislation expand access to digital resources at school libraries, protect conservation grants for invaluable library materials and cut red tape surrounding local library funding. “Libraries are cornerstones of our local communities,” Woerner said, in a statement. “The services libraries provide to our communities are innumerable, from study spaces to computer technology and internet access, as well as job training and senior activities. As chair of the Committee on Libraries and Education Technology, I have remained steadfast in my

commitment to support New York’s library system. I thank the governor for signing these bills into law and look forward to seeing the positive impacts of these investments in our communities.” Woerner sponsored legislation to update the definition of school library materials to include digital resources, helping modernize our schools by making digital materials eligible for state aid (Ch. 571 of 2023). The other measure she sponsored will ensure research libraries have the resources to preserve and conserve their materials (Ch. 578 of 2023). Additionally, Woerner co-sponsored and passed a law to reduce the time local governments need to spend on collecting signatures to call for votes on library funding increases (Ch. 587 of 2023).

SARATOGA COUNTY — The 46-year-old local man suspected of abducting a 9-year-old girl in September was indicted by a Saratoga County grand jury. Craig N. Ross Jr., was charged with kidnapping in the first-degree, a felony, shortly after being taken into custody in early October. Ross was arraigned at Milton Town Court and sent to Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail. The Oct. 2 arrest followed the issue of an AMBER alert, and the discovery of a ransom note left in the family mailbox of the abducted girl’s home, according to authorities. Fingerprints on the letter were entered into the New York State database and a match was made involving a DWI in 1999 in Saratoga Springs. The subsequent investigation led authorities to a camper where the girl was located safe and in good health by state police, and Ross taken into custody, authorities said.

Mayor Signs Agreement with DEC for Climate Action Plan SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mayor Kim, with City Council approval, accepted a $37,500 grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for a Government Operations Climate Action Plan (CAP) during the Nov. 8 City Council meeting. The CAP will establish initiatives and policies that enable

the city to meet its climate goals, identify priority strategies and actions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, assess the vulnerability of the city’s infrastructure and natural environment to projected climate change, and create several shovel-ready projects able to compete for private, federal, and additional state funding.

The city has reviewed proposals responsive to an RFP for consulting services and expects to announce an award of bid at the Nov. 21 City Council meeting. The consultant, with assistance from a project team comprised of members of the Climate Smart Task Force and City staff, will draft the CAP for

review by stakeholders, local officials, advisory agencies, and citizens. After comments and recommendations are taken into consideration by the consultant and project team, the CAP will be brought to City Council for approval. The process of developing the Climate Action Plan is anticipated to take 12-18 months.

Saratoga County Saratoga County Floats $411 Clerk Installed as Million Spending Plan for 2024 NYSACC President by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Clerk Craig A. Hayner on Oct. 23 was sworn in as the new president of the New York State Association of County Clerks (NYSACC). The installation of the organization’s new slate of officers took place during its annual fall conference, held in Clifton Park. Hayner will serve in the position for the next year. As NYSACC president, Hayner said he will focus the organization’s efforts on expanding and further developing relationships with key entities in government, the private sector and non-profits statewide. He also will look to capitalize on the strengths of NYSACC members. Hayner was first elected as Saratoga County Clerk in

November of 2013. Prior to that, he served as a councilman on the Halfmoon Town Board for 6 years and worked in various roles in the private sector for more than 25 years. The NYS Association of County Clerks was founded in 1921 and unites clerks from across the state, providing them a unifying voice on state legislation and regulations, the strength of their collective knowledge, and a forum for sharing best practices. Members are nominated and voted upon for officer positions during the annual summer conference. NYSACC officers take their oaths and begin serving in their new roles annually during an installation ceremony at the organization’s fall legislative conference.

BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County officials have proposed a $411 million spending plan for 2024. The tentative budget marks a $32.7 million increase compared to this year’s approved budget and highlights 8% decrease in the property tax rate. “It is a $411 million budget for 2024,” said city Supervisor Matt Veitch, who last week was re-elected to a ninth two-year term, which begins in 2024. “It’s going to have an 8% property tax rate cut – keeping it under the state tax cap - and it’s going to put us at $1.95 per $1,000 assessed value. In the time that I’ve been supervisor, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it that low, so, good for the taxpayers, you get a little bit of a tax break from Saratoga County,” Veitch said. The county sales tax revenue projection for 2024 is $165 million - a decrease of $5 million compared with expected 2023 revenues, and real property taxes revenues is estimated at about $72 million, approximately $2.5 million higher than 2023 amended budget totals. County Administrator Steve Bulger said the county plans on making significant investments in broadband, highway, and other infrastructure improvements in 2024. Some 2024 Tentative

Saratoga County has proposed a $411 million budget for 2024.

Budget Investments for Saratoga County Residents Include: • A new program, Teams, that will provide $350,000 in total funding to towns and team sports programs throughout the county that support the health and wellbeing of children and youth. • A $2 million broadband expansion project looks to provide high-speed broadband expansion to the towns of Corinth, Day, Edinburg, Hadley, and Providence, utilizing federal ARPA funds. • Preserving open space and providing outdoor recreational opportunities for residents through investments in our Farmland and Open Space Acquisition and fish stocking programs and by increasing funding for our Local Assistance to County Trails grant program. ($575,000) • Continued investments to address the opioid epidemic including utilizing Opioid Settlement Funds to create programs and provide services to connect families, veterans, and underserved populations with community-based treatment,

rehabilitation, recovery, and support services related to opioid and substance use disorders. ($150,000). • Emergency Services communications upgrades and a new Fire Training Tower in support of volunteer firefighters throughout Saratoga County. (more than $3 million). • Robust investments in public safety, including investments in personnel, technology, and equipment for the Sheriff ’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Probation Department, Public Defender’s Department, and Conflict Defender’s Office. (nearly $57 million). Budget workshops are ongoing through November. “As we go forward we’ll see if there’s anything that needs changing or updating,” Veitch said. A public hearing will take place at the county complex in Ballston Spa in early December, and a special board meeting will be held one week later to potentially adopt the budget for 2024. The tentative 2024 budget is on view at: www.saratogacountyny. gov/2024-tentative-budget/.

CHURCH, BREWERY, RESTAURANT, PRIVATE SOCIAL CLUB, AND WEST AVE. DEVELOPMENT ALL UNDER CONSIDERATION IN SARATOGA SPRINGS by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Planning Board announced it will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at City Hall. Applications under consideration that may be part of the night’s agenda include: -South Broadway Treehouse Brewing Special Use Permit for an outdoor dining and micro-production of alcohol associated with an eating and drinking establishment. Tree House Brewing Company has submitted plans to build a brewery, taproom, and “expansive indoor and outdoor experience” across the street from the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Route 9. It will be the brewer’s sixth location overall and first outside of New England. The company said it expects to create at least sixty jobs and generate $30 to $40 million in economic activity. • A Special Use permit and a Site Plan Review is sought for a private/social club proposed at 118 and 121-125 Woodlawn Ave. Saratoga TODAY first reported on the venture last June when it was detailed the club’s anticipated operation hours of 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, when it would provide light meals and bar service for its approximately 200 members, as well as a place for members “to relax and unwind after a day at the office,” according to documents filed with the city. The building at 118 is located on the corner of Woodlawn Avenue and Van Dam Street, just west of the convergence of Broadway/Route 9 and the Saratoga Hilton. For

more than a century, the property was owned by various religious operations and operated as a religious house of worship, The existing gravel lot at 122125 would be upgraded and consist of 22 parking spaces. •12 Ballston Ave., Chipotle. Site Plan Review of a proposed 2,344 square foot restaurant with outdoor seating and associated site work to be located on lands that was formerly the Starting Gate Bar and Grill, which has been vacant since 2015. •400 Louden Road, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs. Special Use permit for a place of worship is sought by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation. UUCSS is currently under contract to purchase just over 5 acres on Louden Road for the construction of the new church. Just over three of those acres are in “conservancy“ – not allowing for development – leaving about 1.93 acres of currently vacant land where the proposed twostory, 8,840 square foot church would be developed. The primary development area is located in Saratoga Springs with the road frontage being in the town of Wilton. The proposal also includes parking availability for 64 cars. •126 West Ave. Site Plan Review of a proposed mixed-use development on West Avenue, that would include office and residential units. The initial Site Plan application (including PUD) was submitted to the city of Saratoga Springs in October 2021, and called for a mixed-use development consisting of four townhouses, office and apartment. Seven new illustrations were submitted to the city of Saratoga Springs on Nov, 13, 2023.

Salvation Army Launches Red Kettle Campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital’s 28th annual holiday ornament pays tribute to one of Saratoga’s most notable figures, Marylou Whitney. Joseph Bell, M.D. designed the gold ornament, which is currently on sale for $25 at the hospital gift shop, Adirondack Trust branches, Impressions of Saratoga, Treasures Boutique, and Crafters Gallery. Proceeds will support the hospital’s

Cancer Patient Fund. In 2019, Whitney was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, just two weeks after she passed away at her home in Saratoga. Known as the “social queen of Saratoga,” Whitney was an influential presence in the Spa City, co-founding both the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and the National Museum of Dance.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — As workers on cherry pickers adorned Broadway’s lamps with Christmas wreaths, the Salvation Army launched its annual Red Kettle campaign outside the Adirondack Trust main branch. “The needs of our neighbors are present year-round, but most prevalently during the Christmas season,” said Salvation Army Lieutenant Michael Dow. “This is why the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign is so important to those looking for help in the coming weeks.”

The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs’ Christmas assistance program will benefit more than sixty local families, Dow said. The charity’s goal this season is to raise $100,000. The first $1,000 was donated by Adirondack Trust. Contributions can be made online, at red kettles stationed in the city, or by texting “Saratoga” to 31333. This year, donations can also be made by tapping a phone or chip-enabled card on one of the dollar amounts attached to the red kettles. The Red Kettle campaign launch was attended by Commissioner of Public Works Jason Golub, Adirondack Trust Company President and

CEO Charles V. Wait Jr., and New York State Senator James Tedisco. Waterwheel Village Marks 100 Years in Business by Jonathon Norcross

Saratoga TODAY

GALWAY — Waterwheel Village, a country store that specializes in aged cheddar cheese, is marking its 100th year in business. Part of the current store was first constructed in 1839 as a foundry that made horse-drawn plows, according to Waterwheel’s manager Laurie Klamp. Klamp has been working at the store for more than forty years and has become its unofficial historian. A member of the Fonda family (for whom the village of Fonda is named) began aging cheddar cheese at the location a century ago. “And we’ve been doing it the same way ever since,” Klamp said. In 1923, the property became a mercantile store. The

Fonda family owned it until 1971. After a series of brief takeovers, the Marvin family bought Waterwheel and have owned it for the last 51 years. The shop sells craft soda and beer, candy, and baked goods. But its most popular items are its aged cheddars. “We actually have people who come

in once a week to buy a pound of it to make homemade macaroni and cheese,” Klamp said. “It is delicious.” Waterwheel is located at 2259 Route 29 in Galway. The store currently takes phone orders and may soon begin online sales. To learn more, visit waterwheelvillage.com.

Skidmore Students Visit X-Files Museum by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The truth is out there. It might also be on Route 50 in Saratoga Springs. A group of freshmen from Skidmore College went to find out. Students from a seminar called “The Fantastic: Seduction of the Strange” toured the X-Files Preservation Collection in Saratoga as part of their course study. The students “thought it was cool to see the original props,” said Assistant Professor Juliane Wuensch, who led the excursion. “They were very fascinated seeing these original things that were in the show.” The collection includes props of monsters, human corpses, and space aliens used in the hit series The X-Files, which was originally broadcast on the Fox network from 1993 to 2002. Given that the series aired before any of the Skidmore students were born, 90s-era

technology was also a source of fascination for them. “It was interesting to see their reactions to all these memorabilia from a time they can’t even really imagine anymore,” Wuensch said. Students were interested “to see the technical side. How was this made? How

was it done before digital?” The freshmen were especially intrigued by X-Files creator Chris Carter’s laptop and floppy disk, which he used to write the first episode of the show. “I think it’s piqued their interest as well for the show,” Wuensch said. She even heard a

couple of her students saying, “I have to watch more of this show” and “let’s have a watch party.” “The Fantastic: Seduction of the Strange” explores all forms of fantastical art, literature, and media. In addition to The X-Files, Skidmore students can study Edgar Allan Poe,

Franz Kafka, The Twilight Zone, and German fairy tales. The X-Files Preservation Collection opened last year and bills itself as “the world’s largest collection of screen-used props, costumes, and set dressings from The X-Files.” It’s located at 4284 NY-50 in Saratoga Springs.

And here’s what I want to say to that: we want to serve more.” According to Empire State

University, the new center will offer both in-person and online services for the school’s veterans and military-affiliated students. It’s located at 111 West Ave in Saratoga Springs.

Notable attendees of the event included New York State Senator James Tedisco, a representative who spoke on behalf of Congressman Paul Tonko, and school mascot Blue the Bluebird.

Saratoga Students Honor Veterans With Flag Ceremony by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It was a chilly afternoon, but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of high schoolers from honoring Veterans Day with a flag replacement ceremony at Veterans Park. The Saratoga Springs High School Military Club, led by sophomore Kelly McMurtrie, hosted the event on Thursday, Nov. 9. Attendees included veterans, fellow students, and New York State Senator James Tedisco. “I always like to say that all good things emanate from the 44th senatorial district, and you certainly exemplify that,” Tedisco said of the military club. The senator said the students’ involvement in the club helped them understand why “we’re the greatest nation in the world, hands down.”

McMurtrie, whose father served in the Navy, said she loved growing up in a military family. “I liked being part of something that was bigger than just myself. The military was a huge community. But I also know that some families weren’t as fortunate as mine.”

McMurtie encouraged attendees to donate cash to the nonprofit organization Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Boxes were set up to collect donations. There were also Veterans Day cards made by local elementary school students available for veterans to take home.

“HERE’S LOOKING TRADITIONAL MINCEMEAT PIE AT YOU Kid.” by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY It is a great time to reminisce and bring up the stories that are told time and time again. Many family traditions have to do with holidays and holiday food and the stories that soon become part of our traditions. These traditions can strengthen family bonds, contribute to your children’s identity and well-being, and create lasting memories. So, I am going to tell the “Bogie” story that I have shared before - a story we treasure. This is way back many years ago when our first baby was our dog, Bogie. He was named after Humphrey Bogart, and he loved to roam between our house and our neighbors next door. This was before invisible fences, and we didn’t have the money for a regular fence. Bogie was a German Shepherd/Black Lab mix puppy when we rescued him. His color was pure black, and he grew very fast to 100 lbs of muscle. He was the happiest dog in the world and loved by both our family and our friends next door, Ron and Deedy, whose children were now grown. Bogie could make anyone feel like they were his favorite person in the world. He would go over to visit Ron and Deedy every day. They were passionate foodies and were always cooking something fabulous. Bogie would wander over to their house and always came back carrying leftovers which were usually a big steak or a ham bone. They loved him as much as we did. Bogie would, however, test your love from time to time by taking food that wasn’t offered to him. There was the Halloween party that stopped dead in its tracks as all of our guests watched in amazement as Bogie took an entire pizza down the hallway and quickly devoured it. He never stole food from Ron and

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Do you have a favorite family story that you tell during the holidays? How many times have you heard or told the same story over and over again? Story telling is an important part of family tradition, and they preserve family history. The holiday season is a time that we gather around the table and share our favorite stories and moments with each other.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING • 2 cups finely chopped beef suet • ¾ cup dried currants • ¾ cup finely chopped rump steak (about 3 oz.) • ½ cup raisins • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar • 2 Tbsp. brandy

• 1½ tsp. chopped candied citron peel • 1½ tsp. chopped candied lemon peel • 1½ tsp. chopped candied orange peel • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice, plus grated zest of ½ lemon • ¼ tsp. grated nutmeg • 1½ Granny Smith apples, cored and finely chopped

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THE FILLING. • In a medium bowl, combine the beef suet, currants, rump steak, raisins, brown sugar, brandy, candied citrus peels, lemon juice and zest, nutmeg, and apples. Mix well. • Transfer the mixture to a 1-quart jar. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 days and up to 2 weeks. Deedy, until one day when his thievery reached legendary status on Thanksgiving 1989. There was a knock on our door, and it was Ron. He had his head down and in a sad voice he said, “John, Bogie stole two of the mincemeat pies I had baked for Thanksgiving.” I responded to Ron with a mixture of denial and embarrassment; “are you sure, how do you know”? Ron said he put his pie on the roof of his brand new 1989 Mercury Marquis, which had three miles on it, in the garage to cool. When he opened the garage door to go out, he forgot to close it. When he came back, there were no pies. However, there were paw prints on the hood of his beloved Marquis. Those prints then headed in the direction of our house. Ron and I then found the empty, perfectly cleaned, pie tins. I apologized and offered to pay for the pies, but Ron laughed and told me not to worry. He said he would have to think of a new place to cool his pies and remember to close the door next time. Although it has been many years since this happened and Ron has passed away, we can still hear Ron’s voice as he

would always tell this story like it happened yesterday. Wondering what Bogie did that infamous day after eating the pies and where did we find the dog after his caper? He was curled up by Paula’s legs in the kitchen sleeping it off. I think this was “the start of a beautiful friendship.” At Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store, we carry everything you need to make your favorite pie or dessert this season, including cooling racks (versus the roof of a Mercury Marquis), pie chains, pie plates, and all of your cool baking tools. Keep your pies safe! Enjoy the holiday season baking and making forever interesting memories. Stop by and shop for your traditional holiday season culinary needs at 33 Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs. When you get a moment, raise a glass and proclaim: “Here’s Looking at you Bogie!” Remember my Foodie Friends: “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Dear David, I continue to shout out from my rooftop how much I will always miss and love you. Six years is a long time and I realize my grief will be forever. I have so much to talk with you about. I know you can hear me in my thoughts, writings, and in my dreams. I miss our conversations. Funny. Sexy. Serious. Off the wall. Melancholy. Reflective. Longing.

No one will ever replace you. A good friend of yours gave me this red velvet bag to hold onto in your memory. It’s sacred and so important to me. Grateful to have it. I’m having a hard time without you. Ongoing... I know you are around me to sense this. There is comfort in knowing we will be together in heaven one day. Love, Shelley

Ballston Spa & Saratoga Swimmers Team Up For States

Week of November 17 – November 23, 2023

Saratoga Wrestling Preview: “We’re Looking to Kick the Door In”

by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

BALLSTON SPA — Not all competitors are enemies. In fact, sometimes they’re friends. At the Ballston Spa High School pool on Monday, one could find both Scotties and Blue Streaks practicing together in preparation for an upcoming state championship. The harmonious session was the result of girls varsity swim and dive coaches Ted Snyder and Joshua Muldner, from Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs, respectively. The two have been friends for years. And with states on the way, they decided to (temporarily) join forces. “Ballston Spa and Saratoga had an amazing dual meet this year and these girls battled hard against each other in their meet. These differences miraculously blend away,” Coach Muldner said. Three local girls are heading to the swim and dive state championships this week: Jillian Ferrie and Addison Kenney from Saratoga, and Sarah Blaum from Ballston Spa. They’re all coming off impressive performances at sectionals. Blaum, an eighth-grader, took first in both the 100 fly and 100 free. “My relays both did amazing too,” she said. “So, it was really good.” The Saratoga girls made school history, according to Muldner. “[Ferrie] had her highest placed finish ever at sectionals at two events,” he said.

“She is now eighth all-time in school history in the 200 IM.” Not to be outdone, Kenney broke the school record in the 100 backstroke. “That was a 17-yearold record,” Muldner said. But the record-setting may not be done.“For my fly, I’m trying to go for the other school record, which is like a half-second drop from where I’m at,” Kenney said. Kenney will have an opportunity to do so at states in Webster, New York on Friday and Saturday. Blaum said she was feeling excited but “pretty nervous” about her first state championship. “I just want to see how it feels, have fun,” she said. “It’s kind of a test run, basically.” Luckily, the elder Kenney and

Ferrie seemed to be taking Blaum under their wings. Ferrie admitted that her first experience at states was “kind of intimidating.” “It’s a little nerve-wracking,” Kenney said. “At the same time, it’s such an intense meet that there’s a really good energy and you feel proud of what you’ve done and accomplished.” The Saratoga swimmers firmly believe in their coach’s mantra, “trust the process.” Ferrie defined what that meant. “Even if you’re not there now, you will be there,” she said. “You just have to wait and keep trying your best. You’ll get there.” Fans can follow the action at states in real-time via the Meet Mobile app. Results will also be posted to the website Swim Cloud.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga varsity wrestling team is preparing for another season, and aiming for “lofty but realistic goals,” according to coach Jake Zanetti. “I feel like last year was a really good year for us as far as putting ourselves on the map,” Zanetti said. The Blue Streaks faced some fierce competition last season from Burnt Hills and Ballston Spa. Although Saratoga couldn’t quite beat those opponents, they lost by only one match. “We were on the wrong side of it, but we were right there with them,” Zanetti said. “That kind of put us on the map, and this year we’re looking to kick the door in and be on the winning side of those duels.” The team has some returning success stories, as well as promising newcomers. Two Blue Streaks wrestlers competed in the state tournament last year. Junior Taylor Beaury finished seventh,

and senior Pat McKinley qualified. This year, McKinley will return as a heavyweight. Coach Zanetti said that junior Gianni Delgado will “make waves.” He also praised a group of sophomores that have been wrestling since seventh grade; Danny Dacey, Luke Stoutenburg, Hayden Passaretti, and Trey Edwards. Zanetti praised his assistant coach and youth head coach Brendon Polcare for doing “a great job with our feeder program, the youth kids… he’s pumping those kids out year after year.” “I do think we’re going to have a pretty tough lineup, start to finish, lightweights to heavyweights,” Zanetti said. “We just want to compete every time we’re out there, whether we get the win or not. We want to put our best foot forward and at least compete to the best of our ability.” Coach Zanetti also shared a preview of this year’s tentative lineup... See lineup on the back page.

Schuylerville Falls Short in Nail-Biter Title Game by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

TROY — During halftime, the sun began to set, cooling off the field and turning an afternoon game into a Friday night contest under the lights. The crowd busted out their blankets and hand warmers. But as the air chilled, the intensity on the field began to boil. At the half, FondaFultonville led the Schuylerville Black Horses 18 to 14. With

just 22 seconds left in the second quarter, Fonda completed a short pass into the endzone to put them ahead. But a twopoint conversion attempt failed, keeping Schuylerville within just one touchdown of the lead. The Section 2 Class C title game was a contest between two contrasting offenses: Fonda’s pass game, and Schuylerville’s run game. But the Black Horses’ strategy suffered a major blow in the third quarter when running back Martin Flanders Jr.

was sidelined with a knee injury. “Martin is a critical part of who we are on both sides of the ball,” said Coach John Bowen. “Losing him there was a huge loss.” Landen Cumm scored a rushing touchdown in the third quarter to put the Black Horses ahead by three. But Fonda fired back with a long pass completion that set up a touchdown of their own, putting them ahead once again, 25 to 21, with only four minutes left in the third. In the final quarter,

Puzzle Solutions See puzzles pg. 22

Schuylerville’s defense was able to force a punt, giving them one more opportunity to reclaim the lead. With a little over six minutes left in the game, the Black Horses went for it on fourth down. The grandstands rumbled in support of both teams. But Schuylerville couldn’t reach the markers and faced a turnover on downs. A long pass attempt by Fonda resulted in a pass interference call that was loudly protested by fans of the Black Horses. With less than a minute left on

the clock, Fonda then sealed Schuylerville’s fate with a rushing touchdown. The final score: Fonda 31, Schuylerville 21. “We really love this group of kids,” Bowen said. “They gave us everything they had.” Although Schuylerville’s season has come to an end, the focus is already shifting towards next year. “We’ll get back to the drawing board,” Bowen said, “and hopefully start working on taking that next step in 2024.”
