Mayor Reports Status of Potential Permanent Homeless Shelter

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness continues its work with meetings scheduled to take place on June 26 and on July 13 at City Hall.

The task force is charged with determining whether a permanent low-barrier shelter is needed in Saratoga Springs and if so, proposing potential sites where one may be located. The initial deadline to report to the council was July 6. Those discussions will now come a bit later, city Mayor Ron Kim said this week.

“They have about eight sites that they’re considering and discussing as possible places to site a homeless shelter,” Mayor Kim

said. “One issue is that none of those (eight) sites have a structure on them, so almost anything the city looks at will require some type of construction.”

A temporary 24/7 shelter recently opened on Adelphi Street and is operated by RISE Housing and Support Services. Additional beds have been added to the shelter, bringing the total number of beds to 35.

Mayor Kim urged city residents to attend county board meetings and speak to supervisors about sharing the expenses related to caring for the local homeless population.

“Some (county) money should go to taking care of the unhoused in Saratoga Springs – who are basically from various parts of Saratoga County,” Kim said. The annual city

budget is approximately $57 million. The annual county budget is about $378 million.

The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors meets as a group monthly, typically at 4 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month, at the county complex in Ballston Spa. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, July 18. Fifteen minutes are set aside for public input at county meetings, and any person wishing to speak must sign their name and address on a sign-up sheet for speakers prior to the 4 p.m. meeting start. Speakers are limited to three minutes. Written public comments may be to the Clerk of the Board at any time via standard mail (40 McMaster St., Ballston Spa, NY 12020), or electronic mail at: www. saratogacountyny.gov/contact. php?EID=125.

Busted: Prized Trophies in Saratoga Heist Met Their Demise in a PA. Bar

continued from front page... to have driven in Boland’s car to the Saratoga Casino Hotel parking lot where the trophies were transferred to Conspirator No. 1’s car.

The allegations charge nine Pennsylvania residents with conspiring to break into a dozen museums and institutions in multiple states – the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs among them –and stealing priceless works of art and sports memorabilia. The accusations claim the events transpired over a period of 20 years and included the transporting of stolen goods to Pennsylvania where some of the suspects melted the memorabilia down into discs and bars and sold the raw metals in the New York City area for hundreds or thousands of dollars.

The suspected “smash-andgrab” burglary in 2013 at the Union Avenue racing museum involved a man wearing dark clothing forcing their way into the museum. Among sounding alarms, triggering sensors and more than a dozen surveillance cameras, he vandalized two display cases and escaped through a separate exit with five trophies in a duffel bag, police described at the time. The entire ordeal took less than five minutes.

There were five trophies in all in the Saratoga heist - three gold and two silver collectively worth more than $400,000. They included a 1905 Saratoga Special Trophy, a 1903 Brighton Cup Trophy, a 1903 Belmont Stakes Trophy made by Tiffany & Co. featuring semi-precious stones, and a pair of steeplechase trophies – one crafted in gold in 1914, the other in silver in 1923.

According to the indictment, 53-year-old Nicholas Dombek, 47-year-old Damien Boland and a person identified as “Conspirator No. 1” made multiple visits to Saratoga Springs prior to the September 2013 incident to view objects on display at the racing museum and observe security measures in place.

Boland is accused of driving Conspirator No. 1 to the museum on Sept. 13, when the latter broke in, used tools to smash multiple display cases and remove the five trophies. The two are then alleged

The two are said to have later met up at a Denny’s Restaurant in Dickson City, Pennsylvania to inventory the trophies before proceeding to Boland’s bar, Collier’s Bar in Scranton, where they melted the trophies down into metal pieces. They subsequently transported those metal pieces to New York City where they were sold for approximately $150,000 to $160,000. Conspirator No. 1 later paid Nicholas Dombek $30,000 from the proceeds of the sale in exchange for Dombek’s help in planning the theft, according to the documents.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs released a brief statement this week which thanked law enforcement for their efforts and said they are “pleased to learn arrests have been made in conjunction with the 2013 theft of priceless trophies from our institution.”

The nine people accused overall are all Pennsylvania residents. Their alleged actions at times mimicked a Hassidic disguise to case out a mineralogical and geological museum in Massachusetts, and saw them pose as prospective members of a Country Club to secure a scouting tour of clubhouse memorabilia and evaluate on-premise security measures. There are additional accusations of being draped in a fireman’s uniform and carrying an axe in order to not draw suspicion prior to smashing display cases, as well as selling some of the goods “to an individual named ‘King Joe’” in New York City.

Among the various objects claimed to have been taken from numerous locations: 9 World Series rings awarded to Yogi Berra between 1947 and 1962; 6 championship boxing belts; a 1961 MVP Trophy awarded to Roger Maris, an Andy Warhol artwork created in 1984 titled “Le Grande Passion,” and a work created in 1949 by Jackson Pollock titled “Springs Winter.” Additionally, the allegations document the thefts of

antique firearms worth more than $1.3 million; an 1903/1904 Tiffany Lamp, $400,000 worth of gold nuggets and a variety of gems, minerals, jewelry, and other items taken from multiple stores in New York, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. The whereabouts of some of the paintings and stolen objects to this day remain unknown.

The accused: Nicholas Dombek, age 53, Damien Boland, age 47, Alfred Atsus, age 47, and Joseph Atsus, age 48 - indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy to commit theft of major artwork, concealment or disposal of

objects of cultural heritage, and interstate transportation of stolen property. All four men were also charged with substantive counts of theft of major artwork and the concealment or disposal of objects of cultural heritage; Dombek was further charged with a substantive count of interstate transportation of stolen property.

Five other individuals were charged by felony informations for the same conspiracy. They are: Thomas Trotta, age 48, Frank Tassiello, age 50, Daryl Rinker, age 50, Dawn Trotta, age 51, and Ralph Parry, age 45. According to

United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the indictment and informations charge the nine with conspiring and other objects.

More than two dozen law enforcement agencies were involved in the lengthy investigation, including the FBI, New York State Police, and the Saratoga Springs Police Department.

The maximum penalty under federal law for the conspiracy count is five years imprisonment, and for each of the other offenses is 10 years imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

Saratoga County Board of Supervisors: Monthly Meeting June 20

BALLSTON SPA — At its monthly meeting held on June 20, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the following resolutions:

• Authorizing the use of opioid settlement funds by the Saratoga County Department of Health (DOH) to support prevention programs, prevent misuse of opioids, and prevent overdose deaths and other harms.

In 2017, the Board authorized the commencement of litigation against the manufacturers, distributors, and certain prescribing physicians of opioid pharmaceuticals to recover damages resulting from the county combatting and treating opioid abuse. With the settlement of some of the lawsuits, the county received funds to

be used for opioid remediation.

With the boards’ action taken Tuesday, the Saratoga County DOH will use $72,000 of those opioid settlement funds to increase availability and distribution of naloxone and purchase additional ancillary supplies - such as drug disposal systems and drug test strips, to be included in the County’s Overdose Rescue kits, which are distributed at announced community events.

Additionally, $44,000 in opioid settlement funds received by the county will be used to support the DOH’s initiatives to provide school-based programs to prevent drug misuse, including related travel expenses associated with the presentations.

• Saratoga County had previously been awarded $44.65 million in APRA funds through the Federal Government’s American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The Board of Supervisors this week unanimously approved $820,000 of its received ARPA funds for the purchase of a Hazardous Material Response Vehicle (HAZMAT) County through the Toyne, Inc. company.

• The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved urging NY Gov. Kathy Hochul to oppose legislation and

utilize her veto authority to reject a proposal that would move some local elections across the state to even-numbered years.

The county Board expressed several concerns in its vote opposing the bill. Among them: it would usurp home rule powers reserved by local governments; election and ballot counting technology would not be capable to meet the demands

of a significantly increased ballot size, and alleging the change would create confusion among voters in towns and counties across the state. If approved by Gov. Hochul, the measure would not affect elections this year, according to a report by the Associated Press. Local officials eventually would have to run for a shortened term to get them on an even-year cycle.

New Restaurant, 42 Fusion, Opens in Ballston Spa

BALLSTON SPA — A new restaurant has opened its doors on Front Street in Ballston Spa, with the introduction of 42 Fusion, a Mexican-Italian fusion eatery.

The restaurant is co-owned by Faustino Lopez, who is also the chef, and Alicia Halse. Lopez said it is his first venture as a restaurant owner after working in a variety of restaurants in the area.

Lopez is a native of Mexico who has lived in the United States for about 17 years, he said. He also has experience working in Italian restaurants, saying 42 Fusion is a combination of the two cuisines.

“I’ve worked in more Italian restaurants and all that kind of stuff, and I’m from Mexico,” said Lopez. “We try to do those two combinations of Mexican and

Italian. We try to create new dishes, invent new dishes, so everybody can try it.”

42 Fusion is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering lunch and dinner options. Lopez mentioned quesadillas and paninis as lunch options, and the restaurant also offers a variety of salads, tacos, and pastas, as well as options such as gnocchi, chicken milanese, short ribs, and more, according to their menu.

“We tried to create a lunch menu, just fairly simple, quick and delicious,” said Lopez. “And dinner is going to be more romantic, more fine dinner.”

The restaurant is located at 42 Front Street, the former home of Sunset Café. Halse said the group moving into the space was a result of “perfect” timing.

“All of the spaces on Front Street have been occupied for a long time, so to find something like this, we were just really lucky,” Halse said. “To be right across from the park, where they do live events, they do parades, they do car shows, they do so many things. It was just a no-brainer, when we saw it.”

Prior to opening, however, Lopez and Halse had to fully renovate the interior of the restaurant.

“We had to do all the inside work,” said Lopez. “It took us about three months.”

“And being a small business, you’ve got to save money and time where you can,” Halse added. “So it was just us doing everything. Stripping the paint, doing the floors or ceiling tiles or light fixtures.”

The restaurant launched a soft opening in late May, with

Lopez saying business has been going “pretty well.” Halse said they hope to hold a formal grand opening ceremony in mid-July.

“I think a lot of people are coming in right now,” Lopez said.

The two said it is meaningful to be open and receive positive feedback from the local community. Lopez, who lives in Saratoga Springs, said he hopes 42 Fusion can help draw more people into Ballston Spa.

“We put a lot of time into this place,” said Lopez. “I really like Ballston Spa. I think it’s a nice area to be in the restaurant business. I want to bring more people into the village.”

“When you put so much work into something, it just makes you that much prouder to see it actually flourish,” Halse said.

Make-A-Wish Northeast New York Relocating to Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Make-A-Wish Northeast New York has announced it will relocate its office to Saratoga Springs this summer.

Located in downtown Saratoga, right off Broadway, the new home will serve as the heart of Make-A-Wish Northeast New York’s community of wish families, volunteers, and staff. Saratoga, with its cultural heritage, beautiful scenery, and abundant recreational opportunities, provides an ideal stage for creating inspirational wish experiences for children with critical illnesses, their families, and the people that love them.

“On behalf of all Saratogians, I extend a joyful welcome to MakeA-Wish Northeast New York.” said Saratoga Springs Mayor Ron Kim in a press release. “We are thrilled they have chosen Saratoga Springs as their new home to pursue their all-important mission of making dreams come true to children and their families.”

“The opportunities afforded to us by this community will bring magic to wishes as we give families the unforgettable experiences that only Make-A-Wish can provide.” said Jamie Hathaway, Interim President & CEO of Make-A-Wish Northeast New York, in the release. “We look forward to creating new partnerships with like-minded organizations, businesses, and donors as our program enters a new era in the Saratoga Region.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Make-A-Wish to our neighborhood,” said Sarah Smith, Executive Director of The Children’s Museum of Saratoga, in the release. “The Museum serves the children of the Capital Region but makes it our goal to reach the children who need us the most. We look forward to working with Make-A-Wish children, families, and staff to help make their wish experience inspirational and life-changing. I am a Wish mom, so I know how important it is.”

New Recruitment Campaign Targets Visitors to Support Local Employers

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Saratoga County Capital Resource Corporation, launched a new marketing campaign on May 15 aimed at attracting new talent to the region.

‘Live Like You’re On Vacation’ is a multi-faceted recruitment campaign geared toward tourists who already love visiting this region and professionals considering relocation. The campaign highlights the three regions –Saratoga, the Adirondacks, and Lake George – in an effort to showcase the variety of opportunities available to residents.

“When you live in the Saratoga, Adirondack, and Lake George region, you are truly living like you’re on vacation,” said Todd Shimkus, President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

“From historic horse racing to millions of acres of protected forests to

the Queen of American lakes, we have all of this – and much more –right in our backyard.”

The Chambers will work collaboratively with local employers looking to hire staff from outside of the region. The materials, including a brochure and videos created in partnership with Trampoline Design of Glens Falls, will help provide a glimpse of what living in the region looks like along with highlighting some of the main attractions that make it so special.

“We know that people love to come visit this region, and we benefit greatly from tourists who want to experience firsthand what we have to offer,” said Tricia Rogers, President of the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce. “But imagine if those tourists became permanent residents. It not only benefits the area economically, but it also expands and grows our communities.”

The ‘Live Like You’re On Vacation’ campaign will run for the remainder of the year with

plans to spotlight the region seasonally, promoting the wide variety of options residents have in this four-season destination.

The campaign was created with assistance of the Saratoga County Capital Resource Corporation and a matching grant from National Grid, through the New York State Public Service Commission approved Economic Development Plan.

“The mission of the Saratoga County Capital Resource Corporation includes undertaking projects for the purposes of encouraging the development of, or retention of, employers in Saratoga County,” noted Matthew Veitch, Chair of the Corporation’s Board. “No doubt the region’s employers are challenged by the historic labor shortage we now face, and our hope is that some of the people we know love to visit here will be motivated by this campaign to relocate here along with their families so we can perhaps fill some of these open jobs.”

Replacing Your Paycheck in Retirement

this article, we will look at different options for retirees that need to replace their income.

Paydays are special. Whether it is every other week, twice a month, or weekly, we all have that day circled on our mental calendars. Then retirement happens, and everything changes. One of the most significant challenges that retirees face is determining how much money to withdraw from their savings each year while ensuring that they do not run out of money. In

One of the most widely known and followed withdrawal strategies is “The 4% Rule.” The rule stipulates that retirees should withdraw 4% of their portfolio value in the first year of retirement and adjust the amount annually for inflation. This approach is based on historical market data and aims to provide a constant stream of income while preserving the portfolio to last the duration of retirement. The benefit of this approach is simplicity, but that simplicity can also be a drawback. If we encountered an abnormal period in the stock and/or bond market, the 4% rule could require some significant adjustments.

To address the rigidity of the 4% withdrawal rule, an alternative is to divide one’s portfolio into “buckets.” The first bucket typically contains cash and short-term

investments for immediate spending needs, the second bucket holds intermediate-term investments such as bonds for income generation, and the third bucket consists of long-term, growthoriented investments like stocks.

The flexibility of this strategy allows for opportunistic “profit taking” during good years while providing a ballast of immediate spending needs during the lean years. Visually, imagine the profits earned from the growth portion filling the second bucket, which in turn fills the first bucket as a retiree happily embarks on the next phase of life.

Dynamic withdrawal strategies take an even more flexible approach. These strategies adjust the annual withdrawal amount based on variables such as portfolio performance, remaining life expectancy, and changes in spending needs. One popular dynamic withdrawal strategy is the “guardrail” approach, which sets an upper and lower limit for the withdrawal rate based on the portfolio’s value. If the market is up and the portfolio hits the upper guardrail, retirees have permission to take that extra vacation or to put money down on a pontoon boat. If the market is down to a certain level, and the lower guardrail gets hit, it’s time to

tighten a few notches on the belt. Unfortunately, the correct answer to this riddle is not known until after the fact. If you gave me a retiree’s exact life expectancy along with a clear forecast of market performance over that time, it would be easy for me to craft an ideal solution. We just touched on the investment portfolio aspect here, but other factors such as social security income, pensions, and annuities will also factor into the discussion. What is right for you will depend on these factors and your comfort with stock market fluctuations. We regularly review income projections for our clients to ensure they focus on living their best life in retirement.

Services presented their annual School Librarian of the Year and Administrator of the Year awards on June 8.

This year’s recipient of the School Library System Administrator of the Year Award is the Ballston Spa High School Assistant Principal, Al Mattice, nominated by Sarah Gunner Moorfoot.

“Mr. Mattice always listens to concerns and is thoughtful and measured in his responses. When we have had to discuss challenging issues (such as parental objections to library materials), he has been steadfast in his support of our students’ right to information and has taken the time to read and understand our updated district board policy on library materials and objection to instructional

materials and controversial issues. I have been fortunate in so many things this year as a first-year librarian–and [this principal] is a huge reason why my first year has been such a joyful learning experience. He has been a sounding board, a teacher, a leader, and a friend for me and the library this year. I believe that Al deserves to be recognized for the hard work he has done this year and for the support he has provided the library,” stated Sarah Gunner Moorfoot.

This year’s recipient of the School Library System School Librarian of the Year Award is Milton Terrace Elementary School Librarian Mrs. Sheila McIntyre, nominated by Dr. Kathleen Chaucer and others.

Mrs. McIntyre’s Award nomination included statements from a total of ten administrators,

teachers, and students. A few of the comments were:

•“[Mrs. McIntyre] is the heart and soul of our school community, a total class act, and I am honored to call her a colleague.”

• “She is a fierce advocate for our students and is able to establish rapport with our most challenging students. She loves the children who feel unloved, meets the children who feel unreachable, and gets to know our students so well that she is able to anticipate and recognize their needs.”

•“She plants, cultivates and nurtures the love of reading as well as supporting all aspects of learning to read for all members of her school community. We love her beyond measure, are grateful for her leadership at the building, district, and professional level, and are excited to nominate her for this award.”

READING IS FOR THE DOGS

Lake Ave Hosts 12th Annual Reader’s Celebration with Therapy Dogs

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Lake Avenue Elementary School held its 12th annual Reader’s Celebration with therapy dogs on Friday, allowing second-grade students the opportunity to practice their reading skills with some canine friends.

Lynn O’Rourke, Lake Ave’s K-2 reading teacher, had been offering a dog therapy program to second-grade students for over 20 years before it was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program returned this year, with O’Rourke saying students enjoy the experience.

On Friday, students sat outside in groups and discussed their books with two therapy dogs. One of the dogs was Luna, brought along by former Lake Ave librarian Kali Nagler, who said she began participating in the program as a way to continue working with children.

“I missed working with kids,” said Nagler. “Having a therapy

dog gives me a good excuse to come and visit, or go to Skidmore … She’s got a perfect temperament for it, so it just seemed like a perfect thing to do, to share her with others.”

Nagler said it is “really

rewarding” to be a part of the program.

“There’s nothing but pure joy in doing something like this,” Nagler said. “It makes me feel like I’m doing something good. I had to take vacation time to come

here today to do this, but that’s how much I love doing it.”

O’Rourke’s class saw four dogs throughout the year, and hopes to have six next year. She said that several classes who did not have the opportunity to

participate in the program during the pandemic were invited to do so at various points this year.

O’Rourke said that the Reader’s Celebration is ultimately a positive program that helps kids grow their confidence and reading abilities.

Smoothie maker blends tried-and-true recipes with a new touch

RANGO POPS

Three years ago, Haley Gerarde would visit The Smoothie Shoppe each Saturday at the Spa City and Saratoga Farmers’ Markets. She had loved the vibe that surrounded the stand and the flexibility it provided the family that owned it. She had also dreamed of following in the footsteps of her parents and becoming an entrepreneur. But she was raising two children and working part-time jobs on and of while doing so. There wasn’t much time (or energy!) left to do more than dream.

Dreams, however, have a funny way of coming true. Last year, Gerarde heard that The Smoothie Shoppe owners were looking for a buyer. With the encouragement of her husband, She jumped at the chance. Now, she makes smoothies at the farmers’ markets as the owner of Jenny Jo’s Smoothie Bar, LLC. “It honestly fell into my lap,” Gerarde says. “And I’m so glad I took the leap.”

Her stall sits near the same spot at the Spa City and Saratoga farmers’ markets as The Smoothie Shoppe had in years prior. Although she has rebranded, the recipes remain the same, she notes, “it’s hard to want to fix something that’s not broken.”

But there are some special touches. One is the business name Jenny Jo’s. It’s in honor of Gerarde’s daughters, Genevieve and Josephine. They’re the main reason why she wanted to take the business. “I want to show them an example of hard work paying off, and give them a job opportunity in their future if they decide to take over” explains Gerarde.

Jenny Jo’s Smoothie Bar offers a variety of flavorful smoothies made with wholesome ingredients. The all-fruit smoothies have no added sugar and are dairy and gluten-free. Each smoothie includes a

superfood (goji berries, chia seeds, or fresh ginger) to boost health benefits, and Jenny Jo’s also uses local ingredients when possible.

Customers can select from a menu including smoothie options like Righteous Red, Purple Power, Mean Green Machine, and Rhymes with Orange. Jenny Jo’s also offers blended shakes made with an almond milk base, like Mochaspresso and Muscle Monkey with peanut butter. New this summer, Jenny Jo’s is freezing smoothies and bringing popsicles! Gerarde admits there’s much to learn about running a business. Still, she enjoys the early morning vibe of setting up for the market and the ability to trade smoothies for produce and other food items sold by other vendors. “Each market has amazing options for a good lunch when we have the time”, she adds.

In addition to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, Gerarde offers her smoothies at popup Zumba events, employee appreciation days, food truck events in Glens Falls, and area farmers’ markets.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. at High Rock Park. Find us online at saratogafarmersmarket.org and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

We believe cooking as a family is important. When it comes to food, we each have family traditions that may have either been passed down from generation to generation, or have been recently developed as your own family tradition. Preparing old family recipes is a great way to pass along stories, smells, and flavors of the past to your next generation of family chefs. Traditions may include having a family member prepare a meal once a week or try out an old signature dish that was part of your own growing up. Give each family member a sense of involvement while discovering a new favorite dish to add to your family cookbook.

Depending on how old your children are (young or adult), you can teach cooking skills, talk about the mathematics of measuring (yes, even fractions!), discuss where different foods come from and what makes some foods more nutritious than others, and share family stories and traditions that center around the foods you’re making. The more chances that your family has to experience foods in different ways, the more familiar and inviting those foods will seem. And, when family members help make the food … by choosing the recipe, going along to the grocery store, or lending a hand with the cooking … they feel more personally invested, and they’re more likely to sample the food (and like it!). Making food can provide plenty of reasons to gather your family together with you in the kitchen, and get them cooking!

One of our favorite items to use when it comes to any recipe and is important in food prep is a wooden cutting board. This item is not only useful in your own home, but is a beautiful gift to give.

At Compliments to the Chef, we love wood cutting boards! Good hard woods have been used for centuries to cut food or butcher meat on. Early man just cut down any old tree to butcher and cut meat on but quickly realized that soft woods got people sick. A good cutting board properly maintained can last a lifetime, and they are safer than plastic which if it isn’t sanitized or left wet can actually harbor

HOW TO MAKE A MEAT & CHEESE BOARD

bacteria. Some of the reasons for this are:

1. Wood is water-absorbent, so it dries faster, which means shorter bacterial survival.

2. Wood contains natural antibiotic agents that retard bacterial growth. We carry beautiful, handcrafted wooden cutting boards made by Catskill Craftsmen, and Saratoga Springs Artisan Adam Cielinski. Choosing an Adam Cielinski wood cutting board can make a great “Saratoga” gift to bring to family or friends or it can be one for your own home. Bring one as a house warming or thank you gift, or choose from one that may reflect a special love or hobby of a person you are buying for. They are simply beautiful and functional.

Adam’s boards are part of Saratoga Springs Art History. They are each different and no two exactly the same. He also makes large cutting blocks that are great for larger items. The good news is they are reasonably priced too! Wood cutting boards have been in my family for generations and we hand them down. I learned as a child to chop and prep on a wood

cutting board. Stop in and pick up a piece of Saratoga History and have something that you can hand down in your family. A little advice on their care:

1. Dry the board immediately after (hand) washing, and

2. Once a month, rub the board with oil, to keep it waterrepellent and warp-free. Apply a coat of warm food-safe mineral oil, let soak in, and then wipe off the excess. Scratches can be sanded out then re-oiled.

Stop by Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs. Keep your family together in the kitchen and involved with the prep and creation of your meals. Family recipes are a way of keeping our ancestry alive, as well as a part of ourselves. Traditions help bond us to those we love. Cooking together creates closer bonds and helps build lifelong memories. You can also use the time to listen, share and talk as a family. Remember my Foodie Friends, “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Take Care, John & Paula

Writing the Right Word by Dave Dowling

Accuracy in word choice is a key to effective communication. In your daily writing and speaking, try to make sure you use the right word in the right place with the right spelling. By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: Hear, Listen

Hear means to be aware of sounds in your ears. Can you hear me over there despite all the noise?

Listen means to pay attention to something you can hear. You usually need the preposition to with it. Try to listen to what the instructor has to say about the test.

SCC’s Justin Duscher Commits to NVU-Lyndon

Deanna Rivers Foundation Presents Check to AWRA

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Saratoga Central Catholic senior Justin Duscher officially signed his college commitment on Monday, stating his intent to play Division III college basketball at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon.

Duscher said he was attracted to Lyndon’s small-school atmosphere and coaching staff, saying it is “a great opportunity.”

“It’s always been a dream for me to play in college, and it’s something that I’ve worked for years and years,” said Duscher. “Coach (David) Pasiak, he gave me a great opportunity to come in. They have really good team-oriented guys on the squad that I really liked.”

“Justin has a very good feel for the game,” said NVU-Lyndon head coach David Pasiak in a press release. “He’s an unselfish passer who has a knack for getting the ball to his teammates on time and on target. He is also a good perimeter shooter, and he takes pride in doing the little things well. He gives us additional depth and versatility on the perimeter. Justin is going to develop into a very good player here as he fills out and adjusts to the college game. Above all of that, he’s extremely team-oriented and positive, and will lift our team on the court and off.”

Duscher averaged 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.4 steals per game during his senior year, according to SCC head

coach Shea Bromirski. Duscher was the Saints’ team MVP and was named to the Wasaren League Exceptional Senior All-Star team the release says.

Duscher, who transferred to Saratoga Catholic from Saratoga Springs High School prior to his junior year, thanked his coaches and teammates for their support.

“The whole community’s really supportive in general, and that really helped me see success here,” Duscher said. “Coach Bromirski, he’s been a real big help for me.”

Bromirski said Duscher is a “really talented player,” and emphasized his leadership abilities.

“(Justin) can shoot, he can pass. He guards multiple positions,” said Bromirski. “We were pretty small, so we asked him to guard some pretty big guys. He did that pretty well for us. He adds a ton of value with his leadership, and his positive attitude. He’s a great young man. We’re lucky to have him, and we’re going to miss him.”

Duscher said he first began working with Bromirski at a young age through Dags Basketball, saying it was “really nice” to share his final high school season with the coach.

“It was a surprise when he came over here, and now it’s really cool to be able to share this experience with him,” Duscher said.

“He had been here an extra year than me, so he was kind

of helping me get my feet wet,” Bromirski added. “I’ve known Justin for a long time, so I leaned on him to be a leader. The kids respect him. He’s a great kid. It’s not just basketball practice, he’s like that every day.”

Duscher said his experience at Saratoga Catholic was “great,” and said he is excited for his college experience.

“I was hoping that he would have a chance (to play in college), and I think he’ll make the most of it for sure,” said Bromirski. “He knows what it takes to be a part of something bigger than himself.”

CLIFTON PARK — The Annual Deanna Rivers 518 Softball Tournament was held Sunday, June 11, celebrating the life of Deanna Rivers, who died tragically 10 years ago.

Annual Father’s Day Kids’ Fishing Derby

Alaynick Strikes Gold

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The sun was shining on Lake Lonely for the annual Father’s Day Kids’ Fishing Derby on June 18, as kids and their fathers or guardians spent the morning casting out their lines.

The Derby, which is free to attend, offered free food and drinks along with prizes for participating kids.

“Hopefully it’ll lead some kids down the right track,” said

Dan Price, a member of the Saratoga Basspointers Club.

The Saratoga Springs Police and Fire Departments were on hand, bringing along a police horse and firetruck for interactions and photos. Members of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation participate as well, helping show kids how to properly catch and release fish.

“I like when the DEC comes,

because they really go to the kids and say, ‘This is how you get them, this is how you put them back,’” said Price. “It’s a learning thing too.”

The derby is sponsored by the Saratoga Basspointers Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2586, Saratoga Springs Professional Firefighters Union No. 343, Saratoga Springs Recreation Department, Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge No. 161, D&D Marine Services, Saratoga Tackle, Wiggly Worm,

Members of the SaratogaWilton Elks Lodge were also on hand, relaying information to parents regarding the Elks National Foundation Drug Awareness Program.

With a large crowd in attendance, Price made note of the community involvement, saying a participant at a recent fishing tournament donated his proceeds to the Derby.

“We had a guy that won second place the other day, he said, ‘This is for the kids,’ which was really cool,” Price said. “The kids get a kick out of it, that’s the biggest thing.”

SSCSD Appoints New Director of Physical Education, Athletics, Health

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Springs City School District has announced the hiring of John Goodson as the next Director of Physical Education, Athletics, and Health.

Goodson had spent the previous 13 years in the same position at the Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District. He will assume the role on July 17, according to a statement on the SSCSD website.

Goodson said his time at Jamesville-DeWitt has been “great,” and said he and his wife are looking forward to joining the Saratoga Springs community.

“My wife and I are both looking forward to Saratoga, for what Saratoga has to offer,” said Goodson. “The school, the community. The history of the program is strong and rich. I’m looking forward to working with their program.”

“We are excited to welcome John Goodson to our district leadership team,” said SSCSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Patton in a statement. “John has a very strong background as an athletic administrator, and

Jamesville-DeWitt has earned the distinction of being one of the top high school interscholastic athletic programs in the state under John’s leadership. John is looking forward to working closely with our students, teachers, coaches, parents, and the community and continuing the outstanding programs and opportunities that are available to all students here in Saratoga Springs.”

Goodson said he was drawn to the culture of Saratoga and noted the community involvement in the district stood out during his interview process.

“I just love hearing, coming from the superintendent and then every stakeholder in the interview, the value of having leadership in the field of health, physical education, and athletics,” Goodson said.

“It wasn’t all just about studentathletes. It was about their overall mental health, physical health. It was just so refreshing.”

Goodson is to replace Nicholas McPartland, who has accepted a role as Principal at Queensbury Middle School. Patton thanked McPartland for his

dedication to the district in a statement posted to the district website.

“I would like to thank Nick McPartland for the tremendous job he has done for the past four years leading our physical education, health, and athletics department. Nick has developed a close working relationship with our student-athletes, coaches, and our community and will be missed,” said Patton in the statement.

Prior to his role at JamesvilleDeWitt, Goodson had served as Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics at both the Johnson City Central School District and Sherburne-Earlville Central School District.

Goodson, a native of Clinton, earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Ithaca College, and a master’s degree in athletic administration at the University of Northern Colorado, the release states. He has also received a certificate of advanced study from SUNY Cortland in educational leadership.

He stressed the importance

of providing well-rounded care in health, physical education, and athletics, saying keeping students at “the center of our decisionmaking” will be a top priority.

“They’re the reason that we go to work every day,” Goodson said. “There’s a ton of experiences that I have, both in municipal, intercollegiate, high school athletics. But I’m always going to keep the student as my center, as my focus.”

Goodson said his first step in his new role will be simply “to listen.” “I want to hear what they’ve been working on,” said Goodson. “I want the people to be involved in setting the mission statement, if you will, and setting the action plan. That’s what I’ll be doing. I’ll be meeting with all the stakeholder groups, listening, and then developing an action plan to move forward.”
