Who is Katherine Ryan? Written and designed by Sara Torres
Katheryne Ryan is bringing Glitter Room to De Montfort Hall in February. Her shows are always incredibily hilarious and her career an example for many.
T
his year’s Comedy Festival is bringing to Leicester a lot of big names in the comedy industry as well as new talents. Some of these include Dr John Cooper Clarke, Harry Hill and Flo & Joan. But as soon as I found our Katherine Ryan was bringing her Glitter Room tour to the city, I had to get myself a ticket straight away. The Canadian comedian is one of the funniest, most honest and empowered women I have ever had the pleasure to hear and see on telly. Her stand up shows are mostly a manifestation of her ‘independent’, ‘go at it alone’ attitude, which is an inspiration for a lot of people around. On them, she usually talks about her failed relationshipshow her last romance broke down because her boyfriend couldn’t accept that she didn’t need him; raising her daughter Violet on her own and how being a single mother does not get you the same credit as being a single father. Occasionally, she mentions the mothers from North London, which she sees at the school gates, and criticises their unadventurous, domestic lives. But the thing about the tall, blonde, blue-eyes, gorgeous Katherine Ryan is that she doesn’t just stick to talking about her love/family life. She makes important social observations throughout her shows while sharing her personal experiences. All, with a hint of sarcasm and a lot of humour.
She is a strong, independent woman who loves Beyoncé- and doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone. You only wish you could be her friend.
After waitressing and experimenting with comedy while at university, she moved to London with her former boyfriend, had a daughter and became a full-time comedian. Her witty one-liners made her very popular amongst the British public and from there she has expanded her profile by acting on sitcoms such as Badults, Campus and Episodes. Katherine also presents Channel 4’s How’d You Get So Rich and is a panellist on The Fake News Show. She hosts Your Face or Mine along with Jimmy Carr, and The Roast Battle with Carr and Russel Brand. She regularly features regularly on television panel shows such as QI, Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Have I Got News for You and Safeword. She is now touring across the country with her Glitter Room, which was inspired by her daughter’s wish to have a glittery bedroom and the tradesmen reluctance who went to decorate it. It was first performed at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York last June, had a six-date run at Montréal’s 2017 Just For Laughs Festival and it’s continuing its success now in the UK. Filled with celebrity take-downs and funny analysis of modern celebrity culture, the show will come to De Montfort Hall on February, 22 and it promises to be as hilarious as ever. So, if you have never heard of her (almost impossible) do check her out on Youtube or on one of the shows she’s on. I promise it’ll be worth it.
