“I’m always striving to better myself. One day I would like to be content with myself and look back and think 'yeah, I did alright in the end”
Illustrator, Typographer or Designer? “I dont really think about it to much as the line between the disciplines is becoming more and more blurred.” Si Scott is loving every aspect of the Freelance lifestyle...
SI SCOTT is a UK-based illustrator, choosing to divide his time between Manchester and London -- a decision which he fully admits he uses primarily as a source of inspiration. His intricate, entirely hand-drawn technique has seen his work commissioned by the likes of Nike Europe, UNICEF, Casio and the BBC as both an illustrator and art director. Behance sat down with Si to discuss the challenges facing new graduates, his barebones approach to design and finding a balance between maintaining high standards.
Si found the greatest frustration as he was graduating college and actually determining what route he wanted to take. “I left school at 16 and went straight to art college to do a btec in design and then a foundation course, which after completing, I did a degree in design. After graduating I did the usual round of placements and worked for a couple of small design agencies, learning about the industry and how to use a computer. Whilst employed I kept working on my own ideas and developing them and trying to get my foot in the door at different agencies and get my work in there.” A positive mind set aided him in less-than-fortunate situations. “I got made redundant twice in as many years and I think in a way this was good for me, because it pushed me more...I just try and keep focused and pull positives out of every job -- if it doesn’t go ahead, [I] keep it on the back burner until a project comes up that [I] can use the idea for.” His unique style requires little to no technology, a process he is not only happy with, but a fact that is sometimes unbelievable to others. “I like to be very hands on with my
work and only use the computer to piece it together. I still get a lot of emails off people asking me what programmes I use to produce the work! I think I could actually get by without one -- having to send original drawings by post or courier and things like that. Computers are great as a tool but I do believe that a lot of people rely on them far too much and let them dictate how a piece is ultimately going to look.” Confidence and a can-do attitude is ultimately what pushes Si through his work and keeps him organized, both mentally and professionally. “I just seem to work all the time -- I don’t think [I have] any big secret to being organized, it’s just a matter of getting on with it, I guess. I’ve always been quite good and very motivated to do the best work possible. I’m always striving to better myself. One day I would like to be content with myself and look back and think ‘yeah, I did alright in the end.’ Hopefully this will happen, as I never feel quite content.” The best advice he can offer to anyone yearning for success and satisfaction is one from Anthony Burrill: ‘Work hard and be nice to people,’ a statement we couldn’t agree with more.

The Magic of Kirra With a casual ambience, pristine beaches & some of the best surfing in the world, the Gold Coast suburb of Kirra is an outdoor lover’s paradise.
L
ocated on the Queensland/New South Wales border, and only minutes from Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, the Gold Coast’s suburb of Kirra is famous for its long surf beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Surfers from across the globe recognise Kirra’s surf breaks as some of the best in the world, and it is considered a training ground for many of Australia’s surf greats. Kirra Point and Duranbah offer excellent waves for both experienced surfers and beginners. They are also a great place to simply kick back and watch the world’s top surfers ride the big waves. If you’re new to surfing, hiring a longboard for the day is a great way to experience the fun of surfing, without the need for all the advanced technical skills. Due to its proximity to Gold Coast Airport, Kirra is a popular weekend getaway. Once a sleepy seaside community, its growing popularity has resulted in the opening of increasing high-end cafés and restaurants to cater for the rising tourism trade.

From the building and running of the vehicle, all the way through to its eventual dismantling and recycling, Corolla has been designed for minimal environmental impact.
Environmentally Savvy
I
ts Dual WT-i engine helps reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It also contributes to Corolla meeting stringent Euro IV emission standards on carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen well ahead of legislated time lines. Other environmentally friendly features in the Corolla include its power-saving air conditioning technology, Electric Powerassisted Steering (EPS) and ease of recycling. To reduce its environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle, Corolla has been subjected to the Eco-Vehicle Assessment System (EcoVAS), Toyota’s comprehensive environmental impact assessment system. This aims to reduce CO2 emissions and other atmospheric pollutants, not just during the use stage, but also through all stages of the vehicle’s life, from manufacture to disposal.
Proactive measures such as developing the new dismantling and recycling technologies, improving the dismantability of vehicles, and further developing easy-to-recycle vehicle design, are being taken to help achieve their targeted vehicle recovery rate. EcoVas also aims toward global elimination of the four substances of concern (lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium) when recycling end-of-life vehicles. A review of the materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts resulted in a reduction in the amount of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) used, thereby also reducing odours emitted from such compounds.

Developed on the French Riviera at Toyota’s European Design Centre (ED2) in Nice, France, the Corolla Hatch has been designed to impress. Stylish, bold and dynamic, its appealing, modern exterior boasts many of the hallmarks of contemporary European car design – from its wide road stance to its sophisticated, sculpted interior.
Designed to Impress
E
ngineered around the world to maximise interior space within its compact length, Corolla has a wide track and long wheelbase to optimise stability and provide an aggressive, firm road stance. Wide shoulders and shortened wheel arches emphasise its sporty 16-inch alloy wheels* (15-inch steel wheels on the Ascent). A deep rear bumper contributes to a confident, powerful appearance. Headlights that extend to the side of the car and bumper that’s intergrated into the hood contribute to the car’s impressive appearance. The Corolla Hatch has a dynamic and agile look with its squat on-road stature and forward positioned cabin architecture.
From the side, low forward-leaning beltline and sloped quarter pillars evoke an energetic feeling. Designed with function as well as form in mind, Corolla achieves an impressively low drag coefficient of just 0.29 which maximises fuel economy and minimises wind noise. Exclusive styling differences from side skirts to exterior colourmatched rear mudguards, have been incorporated in the sporty Levin models. For the ultimate in luxury and style, a moon roof is optional in the Levin ZR model. Also on the Levin ZR model, High Intensity Discharge Headlights provide a powerful, even spread of light, enhancing visibility at night in all conditions. *Spare steel wheel
