More than one hundred twenty-three years of momentum.

THE 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT OF PHILANTHROPY J U LY 1 , 2 0 1 0 – J U N E 3 0 , 2 0 1 1

To our loyal alumni, parents and friends,

2010-2011 was a remarkable year in this school’s long history‌

breaking records

in Admissions, College Counseling, the Annual Fund and event attendance.

In Admissions,

we received more than 1,000 applications — exceeding any other year in our history.

In College Counseling,

92% of graduates of the Class of 2011 were admitted to colleges ranked in the top two categories of selectivity*

66% were admitted to colleges and universities ranked in the most selective category.

These remarkable benchmarks affirm that colleges and universities appreciate the quality of a Westminster education.

*in Barron’s Profiles of Colleges and Universities

And thanks to the support of the generous people noted in this Annual Report,

the 2010-2011 Annual Fund set a record, raising more than $2.4 million to provide essential support for the people and programs that distinguish this school.

T

his Annual Report of Philanthropy highlights the significant difference your ongoing

support made during an extraordinary year in this school’s history. Simply put, Westminster School would not be the special place it is without your inspirational loyalty and generosity. The accomplishments of the past year build upon more than a century of ambitious momentum for this school. Even so, the 2010-2011 year will stand out in our long history for the series of remarkable landmarks in fundraising, admissions, college counseling, athletics and event attendance, any one of which would be noteworthy on its own but which together seem truly amazing. Breaking the record for annual fundraising, following on the heels of a successful capital campaign, is very unusual, since often institutional philanthropy subsides in the wake of major capital campaigns. Even more, thanks to the leadership of Maggie Pinney, our Director of Development, we accomplished this record despite not hiring a new Annual Fund Director until January. In that regard, if you have not already done so, please join me in welcoming Shannon O’Shaughnessy. A veteran in the world of alumni development, having spent many years with Notre Dame and Yale, Shannon has been a terrific addition to our faculty. The record number of admissions applications, given our economic context, one that is especially daunting in the Hartford area, offers a telling testament to the standing of Westminster School in the independent school world. Further, this accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of the ongoing initiatives of our Admissions Office, led by Jon Deveaux, now in his 16th year as Director. The impressive success in college admissions for the Class of 2011 is especially noteworthy considering the ever-increasing competitiveness of the college admissions environment. We have measured our college results against the categories provided by Barron’s for decades, but never before have our students fared so successfully. Our new Director of College Counseling, Greg Williams, certainly enjoyed a remarkable inaugural year leading this important office.

While competing in the Founders League, which includes many talented teams from schools that are quite a bit larger than Westminster, our teams earned top-level New England rankings, triumphed at tournaments and won championships in all three seasons. No one can recall our teams before enjoying so much success in just one year: at different points in the fall season, First Field Hockey earned a No.1 New England ranking; Girls’ Ice Hockey won its holiday tournament and repeated as New England Champions; Boys’ Ice Hockey won both the Flood-Marr Holiday Tournament and its season-ending tournament; Girls’ Squash won the “B” New England Tournament and Boys’ Squash placed second in the “A” New England Championships; Boys’ Lacrosse went undefeated and captured the league title for the first time since 1996; and, finally, Softball won its fourth straight Western New England Championship. Wow, what a year for our athletic teams! Despite all of this success in fundraising, admissions, college counseling and athletics, most gratifying was the energy permeating our greater school community as highlighted by attendance at off-campus receptions and our spring alumni reunion. At our New York City Holiday Reception, Alan Brooks ’55 commented that the 250 guests in attendance marked the best attended, off-campus event in our school’s history. Similarly, Reunion Weekend included more than 350 guests in attendance, up from 225 the previous year. That so many alumni, parents and friends of this school continue to seek out opportunities to connect reveals the energizing enthusiasm animating our school community. It is a privilege to serve as Westminster School’s eighth Headmaster. This past year afforded Jenny and me the opportunity to greet and thank many of you, and we look forward to additional opportunities to reach out to you in the year ahead. Meanwhile, please accept our personal gratitude for your ongoing loyalty and support. With Grit and Grace,

William V.N. Philip, P’06,’09 Headmaster
