SARE NUR AVCI I am a Bachelor student in Bilkent University Architecture Department, in the 3rd year. I look upon architecture as part of our daily lives, not just as a scenery or life-style object. I try to realise its integration with public, culture and environment. As I study and read about Architectural Theory and History of Architecture, I discover the subtopics that are related with art, sociology, politics and gender. That encourages me to examine these topics deeper and connect them with my academic works. I have interest on ecological life style and architectural solutions derived from the environmental, social and cultural sustainability issues. I have taken lessons on Sustainable Design for Interiors to gain knowledge and discover system designs for sustainable architectural solutions. Since another aspect of architecture depends on art, I enjoy photography and sketching as a way of expression of my ideas, observations and pleasures. Sketches and photo editing are the processes that I try to communicate my ideas during the design phase and presentation. I experiment on different techniques and styles to explore different mediums. Currently, I am taking lessons on Classical Singing and Music Theory. These have transformed my perception on artistic thinking, creation process and relation between visual arts and music. I have worked on several artworks in which I experimented on the visualization and spatialization of contemporary music pieces. This experience expanded my vision on temporal and spatial artforms and their appearance in architecture. I seek for ideas and inspirations to work on them. I had enrolled to Bilkent University Architecture Department in the first rank in 2017. I had degrees of Honor and High Honor student in the following semesters. At the moment, I continue my undergraduate studies in RISEBA University, Latvia, as part of Erasmus+ Program.

Ulus District in Ankara is an important core of the city site silhouette that was appreciated during the history as being on the newly developed Sebze Hali spine and main axis of the city. From Ottoman times to the young Turkish Republic’s modern face, Ulus was a central Ankara main city axis point to showcase and demonstrate the transformations in public life. Today, Ulus is undervalued despite its historical value and its place in the collective memory. The new design is developed on the ideas of creating safe and healthy urban environments that enhance the urban experience and bringing new life qualities to Ulus. The historical fragment of the city and Ankara city axis would be elevated and reshaped to respond city’s transformations. The building is located near the street in the very compact texture of the city but is drawn back from the edge. The very exterior face of the building, the double skin, acts as a barrier forv climate conditions, noise pollution and privacy. On the other hand, one of the primary elements of the design, the surface corridors and surface staircases establish the connection with the city. Also, the arcade area on the street face of the building enables experiencing the bazaar environment on the street level and emphasize the sense of passage from the street environment. The openings and movements along the facade create intended image of the building. The preexisting buildings in Ulus created above the brickwork and timber crafts developed since Seljuk Empire times. The design responds to the context with a recall and respect signal. The terracotta and laminated wood materials provide contextual wholeness and contemporary and sophisticated ideas on the design.

Bilkent University 2018 - 2019 Spring ARCH 202 Architectural Design Studio II Supervisor Bülent Tokman The building site is located in Kavaklıdere, on the intersection of Atatürk Boulevard and Şili Square. The unique location of the site required urban context and history analyses to better understand possibilities. Atatürk Boulevard, as the spine of the newly developed capital; and Kavaklıdere, one of the oldest city centers that bore witness to changes in sociocultural dynamics of Ankara, are named as “Republican Period Architecture Museum”. This denotation has given references about the importance of the urban fragment and relationship between existing built environment and the proposal. The arc shaped building lays on the landscape in fragments. The arc provides the stretched elevation, creating a visual connection between city and focal point of the arc. The central part of the building is the main entry to the building and access to the inner yard. It is also the connection point to the underground multipurpose hall. Other two parts, the wings, accommodate the functions of the art and culture center; the library, gastronomic facilities, exhibition halls, workshop areas. The latter ones are arranged on an open plan with free spaces that can be included in the function or remain as circulation areas. The arc form and transparent facade give the sense of connection between urban environment and interior of the site. The inner yard is arranged with ramps, paths and sun shading elements along it and the focal point of the arc is highlighted with an amphitheatre that is radiated from it. The amphitheatre and stage are the projections o the hall underground and host the outdoor activities.

Morton Feldman Piano and String Quartet (1985) Visualized and Spatialized Watercolor on Sheet Disorder in music is articulated in a mental space which undulates, moves and transforms with music. This is significantly apparent in Morton Feldman’s avantgarde style. One listens to his music and the place that it is performed in reoccurs at the imaginary space in one’s mind; explored, mapped and expressed through spatial metaphors such as ascending, descending movement, distance, direction, rhythm et cetera. Ultimately, the abstract concepts in temporal art of music are realized in a vocabulary and embodied in a stage that is derived from visual and spatial art forms. The experience of listening to music transforms the dimension of the musical piece into a virtual sound world. In the end, abstract aspects f music are not only articulated by the composer at first hand in the creation process with visual expressions, but are also re-contextualized with physical senses by the listener. Then, music is neither abstract or a frozen solid but it melts and moves to create disorder and fills spaces in the corridors of mind.
