Ataturk’s Sayings Happy is the one who says, ‘‘I’m a Turk’’. Teachers: the new generation will be your devotion. To see me does not necessarily mean to see my face. To understand my thoughts is to have seen me. Teachers are the one and only people who save nations. Our true mentor in life is science. One day my mortal body will turn to dust, but the Turkish Republic will stand forever. Peace at home, peace in the world.

Present Simple Negative

Affirmative

Long form I do not read You do not read He does not read She does not read It does not read We do not read You do not read They do not read

I read You read He reads She reads It reads We read You read They read

Interrogative

Short form I don’t read You don’t read He doesn’t read She doesn’t read It doesn’t read We don’t read You don’t read They don’t read

Do I read? Do you read? Does he read? Does she read? Does it read? Do we read? Do you read? Do they read?

* The affirmative is formed with: the personal pronoun (I, you, he, she, it etc) + the main verb.

* In the third person singular (he, she, it) the verb takes the ending -s. * The negation is formed with: the personal pronoun (I, you, he, she, it etc) + do not (don’t) + the main verb.

* For the third person singular (he, she, it), do not (don’t) becomes does not (doesn’t). * The interrogative is formed with Do/Does + the personal pronoun (I, you, he, she, it etc) + the main verb.

* Remember: s is dropped from the ending of the verb when there is does/doesn’t. * The present simple is used for something that happens regularly. e.g. I run in the park at seven o’clock every day.

* When using the present simple we usually use prepositional phrases such as:

in + the morning/the afternoon/the evening e.g. I go to the park in the afternoon. at + time (at 5 o’clock) e.g. I get up at 7 o’clock. at + night e.g. I watch TV at night.

Short answers e.g. Does he/she/it have a shower at night? Yes, he/she/it does. / No, he/she/it doesn’t. Do we/you/they pick fruit in winter? Yes, we/you/they do. / No, we/you/they don’t.
