Recent Awards and Publications I, Sarika Bajoria, am an architect and designer. I am a visionary leader driving the strategy, design and execution of multidisplinary design projects to transcend limitations of program and create enhanced value for the client through establishing a compelling “why” for projects. I have over fifteen years of experience in all the phases of design, execution and management for international projects of varied scales and typologies ranging from commercial, residential, hospitality, retail and office to socially conscious projects for non-profits. I grew up in Calcutta and dreamed of becoming an architect since the age of fifteen. At eighteen, I left home to study in the United States to pursue my dream. The journey of exploring uncharted territories was deeply transformative and gave me the confidence to approach challenges with imagination and possibility. I continue this journey by pushing boundaries of design, opportunistically integrating multiple disciplines to create impact and a dynamic vision unique to every project. I am passionate about innovating user experience through a customized narrative that unfolds through its spaces and design. My unique undergraduate background in Physics, Math and Art gave me the foundation to explore the interconnections between these disciplines which I translated into my design process in Architecture during my graduate studies. My projects therefore achieve a careful balance between science and art, performance and form to create meaningful settings. I won “Building Design + Construction 40 under 40 2014” Superstars title and publication cover feature and “Engineering News Record New York’s Top 20 under 40 2013” Rising Stars title which celebrates the design excellence, leadership, career achievement and service to communities of emerging leaders. I received “Professional Achievement Honor Award’ by the Society of Indo-American Engineers and Architects in New York in 2015. I was awarded Permanent Residency status in the United States based on demonstrating “extraordinary ability” in the field of Architecture and Design. My design work has been published in leading international design publications including Architectural Record, World Architecture News, Engineering News Record, Building Design + Construction, Perspectivas de arquitectura y diseno. Prior to establishing my practice, I worked for many years in design leadership roles at many New York firms, notably Skidmore Owings & Merrill in New York as a senior designer for landmark projects in India, New York and the Middle East. I have collaborated with many progressive design firms in NYC namely Yabu Pushelberg, Woods Bagot, TPG and Design Republic on cutting edge award winning projects of varied scales and typologies. I have taught as a lecturer and jury at University of Pennsylvania, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Columbia University, School of Visual Arts and City College in New York. I served as the elected Founding Director for Architecture for Humanity New York Chapter for many years and proactively contribute my time to nonprofit and humanitarian design projects.

THE GREAT EASTERN DEVELOPMENT

HOSPITALITY, RETAIL, LIFESTYLE

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT : FIVE STAR HOTEL & RETAIL

INTERWEAVING TEXTILE MILL SITE HISTORY, ARCHITECTURE & LANDSCAPE MUMBAI, INDIA

Area: 600,000 sf The project strives to become one of the main actors of the urban stage, not just a destination space.

Per-forma Studio is designing the masterplan and architectural vision for this new mixed use high end development in Mumbai. Situated in the heart of the city on the 8.6 acre site of old textile mills, The Great Eastern is poised to be Mumbai’s new retail, hospitality, lifestyle and entertainment destination space. The conceptual genesis of the architectural design is derived from the textile mill site and its trade of the “spinning and weaving” of the cotton loom. The design boldly “interweaves”the rich history and preserved relics of the textile mill site with its future and also integrates its architecture and landscape with the city. Green spaces and water elements are interwined in the public areas with view extensions to the city and the sea beyond. The dynamic form of the hotel tower, offers an iconic silhouette to the Mumbai skyline, responding to the ever changing dynamism of its movement, energy and people. The intertwining of the new and the old, modern amenities and the sanctity of undisturbed nature, relaxation, shopping, entertainment and luxury within the design and vision for the development, creates a very unique visual and holistic experience for its visitors.

OFFICE AND RESIDENTIAL TOWER

SERVICE APARTMENTS WITH MAXIMIZED SOUTHERN SUN EXPOSURE

ENERGY EFFICIENT TOWER FOR CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT BEIJING, CHINA

The 300m tall Office and Residential Tower is an icon for the Beijing Central Business District inspired by the concept of “movement” through the city and through nature. This notion of movement is also inherent in traditional art and landscape in Chinese culture. The form of the tower torques and twists to optimize solar exposure, views to the city and program uses. Movement is expressed through a vertical green continuous path cutting through the tower to form vertical atria and green terraces and gardens. Like the symbolic and bold virtuosity found in “grass-style” calligraphy, sweeping lines and curves unify the twisting form of the tower as it sweeps and builds an iconic profile on the Beijing skyline.

HILL COUNTY SEZ OFFICE PARK ENERGY EFFICIENT OFFICE COMPLEX HYDERABAD, INDIA

Area: 1.2 million sf 2008 Bronze Award for Sustainable Construction for Asia Pacific Region by Holcim Foundation Hill County SEZ masterplan of 11 IT office buildings is part of a larger (400 acres) mixed use masterplan. The two prototypical buildings consisting of a total of 1.2 million sf of office space are exemplary in design as well as their performance. The building form and the site walls emerge out of the unique site by a process of three dimensional layering from the dramatically contoured site. The courtyard form and the layout were derived in direct response to high solar radiation which was identified as the key contributor to internal heat gains. The exterior facade clad in stone and vertical strip windows ‘jali’ shading devices were analyzed to achieve maximum protection from solar radiation while providing ample daylighting. The shading devices are inspired by from local traditional “kolam” pattern. [ Sarika Bajoria, senior designer/architect at Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP ]
