Hotel and Suites | South Beach | Miami, Florida
Encompass is a new brand of hotel gaining traction around the world. With each city we seek out new possibilities of where Encompass Hotel and Suites can take you. Here in South Beach, Miami, Florida we grasp a new concept called ‘Social Terrain’ and see it thriving in a city boasting culture and vibrance. This brand will soon circumnavigate around the world as an exciting new approach to experience the way we use hotels. ‘Social Terrain’ is a concept based on the idea that not only guests of the hotel can experience what it has to offer, but the public as well. This new public realm gives an invitation to outside guests and allows for visitors to use most of the amenities on site. Letting people travel and roam the space creates moments of discovery generating a means of exploration on our site. This exploration strengthens the concept on a basis that once people wander the hotel grounds one can find themselves interacting in the ‘Social Terrain’.
To construct an architectural system within the landscape we first must integrate lower levels of the structure in regards to programming, views, sunlight, outside influences of site, and many more.
Taking views into account we must extrude a portion of the structure to allow for optimal views, in this case the Atlantic Ocean, Miami Beach, and the exterior courtyards onsite.
In the exterior spaces developing a terracing effect is essential here to provide views from points of arrival as well as a structured and organized system that allows for guests to wander without getting lost.
Programming of the platforms is a crucial component to the site. By merging the platforms not only with themselves, but integrating them within the hotel structure allows for a seamless transition from outdoor space to the inside.
Integrating this concept with goals such as access and recreation defines the next boundaries of where the project can move forward. Access and recreation take a great role in the main area of the ‘Social Terrain’ as it encompasses of mostly outdoor space with some inside meeting points as well. An area defined by four courtyards surrounded by an architectural edge enhances each space giving individually unique amenities as well as activities taking place in each area.
Giving specific programs to each space we connect the edge from outside to the inside and back again.
