It is a great pleasure to see this, the 5th instalment of the 4482[sasapari] Exhibition open with its 2012 showcase, entitled ‘Map the Korea’. This year’s exhibition introduces contemporary Korean art to the UK whilst assisting with the continual development of British based Korean artists. The UK-Korea bi-lateral relationship in the contemporary art world is illustrated in their group title, 4482, representing the two international dialling codes for the UK and Korea. As each year passes, these annual exhibitions have grown in both size and credibility. Now in its 5th year, 64 Korean artists and 5 curators working and studying in the UK have voluntarily joined together to continue and shape the legacy of the 4482 exhibitions. ‘Map the Korea’ will showcase not only the works of the 64 talented Korean artists, but also the splendid accomplishments of the previous exhibitions and artists by providing an archive and portfolio of the five exhibitions to date. The Korean Cultural Centre UK fully understands the spirit and importance of the 4482 exhibitions and enjoys supporting this annual event. I would like to express my warmest congratulations to the artists and curators for producing this stunning exhibition and look forward to seeing many more in the future.

The globalisation of contemporary visual art has influenced many aspects of contemporary art in its dissemination in the past decades. The emergence of art festivals such as biennials and triennials beyond North America and Western Europe has rapidly extended the geographical boundary of contemporary art, and fundamentally changed the nature of international exchange from bilateral to multilateral. The increasing availability of World Wide Web has also decreased the vacuum of the information on the artistic production in nonWestern regions. Curators, critics and art dealers are no longer confined in the given cultural and geographical boundaries in their activities, and finding new territories in its widest sense is critical in their professional innovation. Increasingly, such expansion of geographical and cultural ground is also regarded as an advantaged, if not necessary, condition in art production. For artists from non-Western areas in particular, studying, working and living in Western metropolises have proved beneficial in developing their profile and opportunities. Cities like London, New York, Berlin have a great number of foreign artists and art students, and their art scenes are becoming ever more international and multicultural in return. Several artists internationally renowned have few bases in different cities, often reflecting the global scope of their activities. 4482 is a significant outlet of Korean artists living in London to showcase their current practice. The range of ages, careers and media is fairly wide but they share a common thread being relocated to London for their art education and/or professional career. Common cultural references and social and political sensibilities are undercurrent but recognisable, while individual practice varies undeniably. Being one of the largest foreign art communities in London, it is not surprising that Korean art students and artists are able and willing to mount an exhibition of this scale each year. The increasing involvement from curators and curatorial students is also notable and this will inevitably enrich the critical and discursive rigour of the exhibition. New arrivals
and departures of graduates may pose an issue of discontinuity but they also could bring fresh ideas and energy that are seminal for organising such an exhibition. Whilst it is important to create opportunities of exposure through the channels of Korean community, it is of course also crucial for Korean students and artists to explore the routes inherent in the British art scene. Their studying in British art schools is an obvious way of being integrated in the system, but the degree of benefits is entirely dependent on the attitudes and efforts of individuals. The conventions and languages in the UK art system could seem alienating at first but learning and employing them effectively will enable art students and emerging artists in communicating fluently in artistic terms in the specific British context. Just like learning a foreign language, understanding the UK’s artistic conventions and institutional systems requires open-mindedness and persistence, and it is eventually for the benefit of the learner, who will be able to convey her or his points and messages fluently and secure a desired aim. Modernist cannons and Western-centric art historical discourses are constantly challenged and questioned, and entering into such debates with a fresh yet informed perspective will doubtlessly assist the artist in making meaningful contribution. The increasing presence of Korean artists in graduate exhibitions and participation in selection-based exhibitions for emerging artists are encouraging signs of their successful integration. With unique vision as well as a profound understanding of current artistic issues, the artist will be able to make a firm stance in this multi-centred yet paradoxically unifying art world in a global age.

A Retrospective of Korean Art in London through 4482
An Exhibition Manager of the 5th 4482 Exhibition Team Ji Young Lee
The 4482 has become the largest contemporary exhibition, showcasing Korean art in the UK. 4482 originated from the Open Exhibition in June 2007 at King’s Park Studio, New Malden, South London. Ten London based Korean artists, Chan-Hyo Bae, Chongwoon Choi, Han Jiseock, Hong Jung Ouk, Jin Kim, Young Hun Kim, Dae Hun Kwon, Sea Hyun Lee, Sue Jin Lee and Park Chang Hwan organized the Open Exhibition with an aim to enter into the London art scene. Following this successful launch the 4482 exhibition was organized to coincide with Frieze Art Fair later that year, involving a further twenty artists. Global interest in contemporary art practices from Asia had increased throughout the late 1900’s. However, this was not the case for Korean arts in the UK, due to strict visa laws, disallowing lengthy stays and lack information of Korea art. Restrictions negated opportunities for purposes of exhibiting, and formulating relationships to enter the contemporary UK arts scene. It was only after 2007 when the visa permit was extended for Koreans, that an opportunity arose
(10)
for showcasing Korean artists, and for students to study fine art in London. The Korean Cultural Centre opened near Trafalgar Square in West End London, and I–MYU Projects the first Korean commercial gallery in the same year. This exposure gave rise to an interest in Korean artists, and Korean galleries GANA, LEEHWAIK and SEO set up trial offices in London to test the market. In addition the first Korean contemporary arts exhibitions took place in London. ‘Through the Looking Glass’ was exhibited by Jiyoon Lee, the director of SUUM Project; and Seo Jin Seok, a Director of Loop, (an alternative arts space in Korea), curated the exhibition, ‘Circuit Diagram’ at Cell Project Space, London. The second 4482 exhibition, took place in October 2008 with a momentum that proved there was a place on the London art scene for contemporary Korean artists. The exhibition was produced by independent Curator Sun Hee Choi, (based in Paris), and showcased forty-six artists in the Bargehouse arts space within the OXO Tower complex on the Southbank. Importantly, it also offered a platform for Korean artists to communicate with each other, and strengthened cultural ties with the London art scene. It was this year that the participants of the exhibition chose the name ‘4482’. The third exhibition took place two years later in February 2010, and was organized by four exhibition organizers, led by artist Dae Hun Kwon. Fifty-three artists participated making it the largest showcase of contemporary Korean artists in London. It became necessary at this stage to rethink the direction of the exhibition. Through discussions with the artists the exhibition’s was called /sasapari/, which means 4482 in Korean language instead of double four and eight two in English, and had the subtitle, ‘Utopia /Distopia: A Palace with Contemporary Views’, to include the diverse voices of the artists. Significantly, in the same year, a large-scale retrospective exhibition of Nam June Paik, a representative Korean artist and the progenitor of media art, took place, at Tate Liverpool. The second Korean Eye exhibition opened at
the Saatchi Gallery, whilst gallery owners Tom Woo and Tony Pontone established HADA Contemporary to showcase emerging and established Korean artists in London. Accordingly, the activities and status Korean artists in the UK rapidly increased with visible outcomes. For example, Korean artists were invitated to exhibit from European galleries and museums, and were nominated for awards such as Bloomberg New Contemporaries. In February 2011, the fourth 4428 exhibition under the subtitle, ‘Rhizosphere: Directions in Motion’, continued to explore a wide range of possibilities for the development of showcasing Korean artists in UK. The exhibition included sixty artists and a publication produced alongside the exhibition reflected a critic of art by participating artists through interview. Aritsts delegated coordinators Gyeyeon Park, a curator, Chan-Hyo Bae, Jiho Won and Seoyeoung Won, artists, to produce the exhibition. The fifth 4482 showcase maps sixty-four Korean artists in the UK under the subject of ‘Object’, ‘Site’, ‘Time’, ‘Subjectivity’ and ‘Method’. The content of this text has been produced from information provided by 4482 participating artists and past collaborators.

map the korea Mapping Korean Contemporary Art in British Terrain
Mapping has become an important strategy in artistic practice over recent years as the means by which dynamic layers of creativity can emerge and repressed potential and unexpected outcomes can be liberatively actualised. The map is no longer merely a cartographic technique to represent the borders of territory imposing hegemonic relations, or to analytically visualise the already planned reality. In contemporary geographic studies, it is more like a performative process to dismantle what is conventionally known and inaugurate new grounds upon the hidden traces of a living world.1 Mapping is now an idea of ‘performance’ to be searching, disclosing and engendering the new conditions of cultural projects, detouring around fixed sets of thought. As James Corner claims in The Agency of Mapping (1999), it is time to be more concerned with what maps actually do rather than with what they mean.2
In this performative sense of mapping (not a socio and geo-political sense of planning), the 5th 4482 [sasapari] exhibition attempts to map the Korean Contemporary Art scene in London using the diverse voices of Korean artists. Even though 4482 [sasapari] is a large-scale exhibition organised under the Korean flag, its ultimate purpose is neither a nationalistic gesture to idealise how internationally powerful Korean art is, nor a conclusive claim to address that this is the only representative scene of the Korean contemporary art map in the UK. Rather, it endeavours to draw out a plurality of readings of Korean art in a contemporary visual art context while undermining a particular route or itinerary to understand what it means and represents. By experiencing multiple entryways and exits of alternative trajectories of original art practices in the show, the audience can create their own
(14)
mapping to reshape the mindmap of Korean art so that they play a constitutive role in the 4482 [sasapari] activity. The 4482 [sasapari] project itself is a site for projecting gatherings, multiplicity, conflicts and compromises, and also for encountering ideas, references, connections, participations and relationships. Through this active mapping process, its artistic practice and curatorial approach facilitate a decentralised and collaborative form of creativity through which the alternative art event can be fostered. As reworked with the given fragments of idiosyncratic artworks, the unexpected map of Korean art in foreign British terrain enacts an imaginative capacity to make different forces and layers of cultures and communities in time resonate together productively. A montage of multiple and independent art pieces incorporated in
the exhibition unfolds new dialogues of hidden potential, responding to the five subjects: object, site, time, subjectivity, and method that are often important topics in the art world. The map now sets the stage for future work,3 embracing the contingency and uncertainty of future narratives. Gaeun Ji and Hyukgue Kwon of 5th 4482 Exhibition Team

what The liminal things
The things dealt with by these artists are outside of the ordinary function of common use in everyday life. They rest ‘outside of the order of objects’ in a state of liminality and amorphousness. We recognise certain objects because they are coded and our interpretive attention makes them meaningful because there is a discourse of objectivity that allows us to use them as facts. On the contrary, we begin to confront the thingness of objects when objects break, or no longer work
in recognisable ways. Things become uncertain, ambiguous, excessive and unspecified. When common objects are transformed into art things, their generally accepted meanings become blurred. This chapter is the story of objects that reveal this liminal status. The artworks strike a fresh chord in the subject-object debate.

who The Performative Nature
It is undeniable that the non-synchronous temporality of global and national cultures opens up new possibilities for the creation of art. This chapter will include works of art and artists which explore subjectivity in the moment of transit, and which continue to articulate the theme of ‘identities’. As often related, the current untotalisable totality in the complex socio-economic and political circumstances of globalisation stimulates contemporary artists to be concerned with the notion of subjectivity
and new signs of representation which, not surprisingly, result in various visual implications and subsumptions of populations, economies, nations and cultures. The incommensurable differences and diverse approaches to subjectivity presented in this chapter will illustrate the cognitive obscurity and temporality reflected in the transitional provisionality of the present.

how The Unfinalised Drift
How is change, as the creative transformation of what is established and taken for granted, possible? What are the tensions within society, and within the self, between the desire for normativity and stability on the one hand, and innovation and openness on the other? In this chapter artists question the relation between system and change, fixation and flux, law and revolution.
A radical theorist of literature, Mikhail Bakhtin emphasised that nothing in life can ever be finalised, stressing the need for the prosaic details of life and human society, resisting a static system or any final conclusion.
Life is riddled with surpluses, remainders, loopholes, and anomalies which keep things unfinalisable and therefore always hold open the possibility of surprise, change and revolution.
(73)
Artists wander the expanded field of the subjects as an unfinalisable complex of identities, desires and voices. Their turns and detours within the recessive nooks and crannies of everyday life become ‘the dream-like drift’ through the presented pieces.

where Site Becoming Points of Situation
Many contemporary artists are concerned with and explore sites when they create works of art. Events and products which are considered ‘works of art’ have often been recognised out of context and their presented surroundings.
in a situation. Site, becoming a point of situation, gives rise to multiplicity. This is because what determines an event is a site, not because a site exists in the situation that there is an event.
Events can always be placeable and have a site and are always sited and integrated in a point of situation, rather than being a situation. Thus, these sited events concern specific points of situation and the potential multiplicity presented
(101)
The artists presented in this chapter are those who closely reflect on a site and a point of situation, exploring the state of the events and works of art as demonstrative of the continually multiplicative relationships between a site and event in the point of situation.

when Time and the Ambivalent State
Time is abstract and intangible, yet one of the basic elements in our perception of contemporary art. The notion of time and its fragments, connectivity and process are inextricable from the creation of contemporary art. Any works of art that are not static can be connected with the timescale of process in some way. This durational and immaterial aspect is one of the obvious elements that evokes, questions and transforms in contemporary art.
(129)
The artists show the subtleties and complexities of the immaterial and abstract concept of time along with works that are inseparable from process, contingencies and the visualisation of immateriality. A series of works in this chapter will reveal the relationship of an unsettling instantaneity in contemporary art to time and the ambivalent state of being. It will also show the interplay of contemporary art and time from technical and formal invention to spiritual and intuitive expression.
