Founded in 1942, Timbmet has grown into a multi-million pound, internationally recognised, environmentally conscientious and endlessly innovative enterprise. Still a family business, the founder’s enduring passion for wood as a raw material inspires the ethos of the company today. Our dedication to on-going development – accompanied by a commitment to improving industry standards as a whole – has won us several awards including TTJ Hardwood Trader of the Year 2009. Although delighted to have been recognised, we are not complacent and continue to strive towards advancing our technology whilst sharing our experience both internally and with our partners and customers.

We are able to service your requirements for large orders through direct business of full or half loads. This is the most cost-effective method for placing bulk orders with an average requirement for 14 packs of panel products. All the packs must be within the same product range, for example, standard MDF mixed with Moisture Resistant MDF and Light MDF. If you would like to place an order for direct business then please contact our sales team who will be able to find you the most cost effective solution.

Our environmental policy commits us to sourcing our wood product from legally and sustainably managed forests, reducing our carbon footprint and minimising our waste production. Through our supply chain assessment system we determine the forest of origin, the legal right to harvest and the standard of forest management practiced for all of the timber and wood products that we buy. We are committed to increasing the proportion of our purchasing that is independently certified or verified. For specific environmental, certified or sustainable timber requirements on a contract, we offer a range of full chain of custody certified products in FSC, PEFC, CSA, SFI, MTCC and Verified. Panel products are available with FSC and PEFC chain of custody certificates.

The FSC logo identifies products which contain wood from responsibly managed forests independently certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council A.C. FSC Trademark.

Manufacturing Services Timber

Precision Cutting as Standard Using the latest optimisation and production software we can identify the most efficient cutting patterns, minimising waste and cutting times.

CNC Machining We can machine intricate components quickly and efficiently and can tackle every job from prototype to full-scale production runs.

Standard Mouldings We can offer a range of cladding, skirting, dado rails and window boards in Oak and Meranti, generally available from stock.

Bespoke Machining Special profiles and joinery components are available to order.

Finishing Factory finishing gives consistent quality; our automated paint/lacquer lines can save you time and money. Try out our priming, painting, lacquering etc.

Bonding and Edging We can bond-laminate or veneer to almost any substrate, call us for a quote.

Universal Finishing State-of-the-art, water based finishing line provides lacquer finishing, painting, base coating and priming. Spray and hand finishing also available.

Component Assembly A skilled workforce manufactures and assembles joinery components.

Fully Finished Components We can offer fully finished component pieces, cut to size, drilled, edged, over veneered and fully finished. (Note: Minimum order quantities apply, usually 100 per item)

Timbmet is able to provide a wide range of external timber cladding options. As one of the UK’s largest suppliers of PEFC certified Western Red Cedar, we offer this in 3 standard cladding profiles from stock with other profiles available to order. Other species available include Larch, Thermowood, FSC Louro, Iroko and European Oak. Our experience and expertise of dealing with bespoke orders through our own manufacturing services mean we are also able to offer bespoke solar shading products. Veneered Boards

Veneered Boards

Veneered boards make an excellent substitute for solid hardwood in many applications. Quality varies in both the care taken over selection of the veneers, stitching, gluing and the thickness of the veneer itself.

Veneered MDF

We pride ourselves on being the UK’s number one veneered board supplier. Over 50 years trading with Europe’s best veneered board manufacturers has assured us a reputation second to none for quality and reliability. Working with our suppliers, our product development is constant, extending our range, sizes and source of raw material.

Timbmet offer Veneered MDF Mixmatch which uses the ‘mixmatch’ jointing technique, where wood veneer of different trees and various grain patterns are matched, resulting in a more uniform quality, without losing the lively and unique aspects of wood: Modern, innovative, creative and timeless all at the same time.

We list our standard range which is available from stock, however, the volume of specialised product we are asked to supply grows on a daily basis. If you have a special requirement, we will be happy to help.

To complement our standard range of A/B quality we offer two further grade options:

Our Natural range is an expression of the wood with all its typical features, a less pronounced or wilder structure, more colour variations, smaller series of runs and some pronounced knots are classical examples of this quality. Priced to please and broadly acceptable for a variety of internal work. The Natural range is available as full packs only. We offer three sanded engineered veneered MDF boards but other engineered veneers are available to order.

Mixmatch

Timbmet also offer Jumbo sized boards, 3050 x 1830mm, in 19mm White Oak and American Black Walnut veneered MDF. These boards offer greater optimisation resulting in reduced cost and waste. Description

Halspan is a range of chipboard doorblanks FD30 and FD60 fire rated for interior use and are certified under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Third Party Certification Scheme. Halspan products have a three layer particleboard construction manufactured using materials which are FSC chain of custody certified (FSC 70% Mixed Sources). Halspan has achieved a ‘severe duty’ rating when tested to the mechanical performance requirements of DD171. Acoustic performance data is also available. There are many applications in which Halspan Optima and Halspan Prima doorblanks can be incorporated and guidance for the product suitability of each type can be found within the Halspan technical specification manual. Viscount doors have a solid particleboard core with a 6mm hardwood lipping to all four edges and are fully finished to the faces and edges. Viscount doors are available with FD30 and FD60 fire ratings, are ‘severe duty’ rated to DD171 and acoustic performance data is also available. Items which are made to order have a typical lead time of around 4 weeks. GLAZING SERVICE

We can offer a glazing service to accompany our Viscount range. Doors can be supplied with apertures either fully glazed or beaded only. There are 6 standard panel configurations including building regulations part M ‘zone of visibility’ compliant openings.

Faced with either chipboard for veneer and laminate application, or MDF for paint, veneer and laminate application. Blankfort has achieved a ‘severe duty’ rating when tested to the mechanical performance requirements of DD171. Acoustic performance data is also available. Where indicated, Blankfort products are FSC chain of custody certified as standard. Remaining items are available FSC to special order – price on application.

It is perfectly suited for use in environments where there is likely to be regular abuse, reduced care and frequent passage. Flame Retardant Products

Flame Retardant Products FR Tropical Plywood

The introduction of the European ‘harmonised’ FR classifications has caused some confusion.

For interior use only in dry conditions.

Previously, BS476 (parts 6 and 7) was used as the test method for assessing the effectiveness of flame retardant treatments. These treatments fall into two categories:

1 Panel products like plywood and solid timber are vacuum pressure impregnated with chemicals by specialist companies in controlled conditions

2 With products like MDF and chipboard the chemicals are incorporated into the board during manufacture

Under BS476, most untreated timber or panel products would achieve Class 3 or 4, indicating rapid flame spread across the surface. Treatment with FR chemicals upgrades this to a Class 1, which represents a low surface spread of flame, or Class 0, which combines the low spread of flame with limited combustibility.

The common FR classifications, therefore, used to be Class 1 or Class 0.

Flame Retardant Products

These classifications use totally different test methods to assess the properties of boards so care must be taken when substituting products. This is where the confusion lies. Specifications often call for Class 1. In this instance, you can safely use Euroclass C as it complies with the requirements of BS476 Class 1. However, this leads to the assumption that Euroclass B meets the requirements of the old Class 0, but this is absolutely not the case. FR Class B & C Copenhagen Opera House

Euroclass B does not meet the requirements of the old Class 0, so if Class 0 is specified, you cannot automatically substitute Euroclass B and vice versa. You must check with the specification authority that you can substitute Euroclass B for Class 0, and if they insist that Class 0 is used then that is what should be supplied. Medite FR MDF Euroclass B is (currently) the only MDF that meets both Euroclass B and BS476 Class 0 standards and can be used in both situations. Other manufacturers do not offer this so great care should be taken when deciding which product to use.

Far Eastern Marine Plywood Manufactured in the Far East from moderately durable species to BS 1088·2003 ‘Plywood for Marine Craft’ standards. The primary difference between marine and exterior grade is the quality of the core. Marine plywood has far fewer and smaller core gaps. This is especially important where there is potential for the ingress of moisture, which can collect in the voids. It is a product which is commonly specified in applications where performance is a critical issue. In extreme applications, such as boat hulls, we would recommend you select a kite-marked or Lloyds approved plywood.

SmartPly is a good alternative to plywood because it doesn’t delaminate, has no knotholes or other structural defects, is easy to work with and is less expensive. It’s bonded with waterproof glue for exterior use and is ideal for a wide range of uses. There are two grades of SmartPly:

Standard grade chipboard for use in interior applications.

• SmartPly 2, a general purpose building panel manufactured to EN300 standard. It is recommended for general non-structural building purposes and structural applications in dry conditions. It is ideal for general hoarding, signboards, furniture, temporary framework and much more. • SmartPly 3, a strong, versatile board suitable for structural use in humid conditions. It is ideal for use in a range of applications including roofing, flooring and hoarding. This product is also approved for structural use by the BBA, IAB, KOMO, NHBC and Local Authority Building Inspectors. SmartPly SiteProtect is a durable coated panel specifically for site hoarding and security applications, designed to save both time and money. SiteProtect uses the SmartPly OSB3 board coated with a smooth heavy duty exterior surface treatment which does not need to be primed. Logos can be fixed directly to the board and if colour is required can be painted with fewer coats needed.

Timbmet’s natural carved panels are available in their original state, unsanded and unfinished at 18mm thick. All panels allow the pattern to flow from board to board. The boards are supplied balanced. We are also able to offer these panels carved to your own bespoke design, please contact us for details.

Lengths of wood alternate with thinner strips of transparent Plexiglas, bonded to each other with an advanced gluing technique. FR Boards contain water-soluble salts so only condition in air.

Glossary Balancer A balancing back of equal or similar density to face veneer to prevent warpage by moisture and/or pulling. The balancer can be of any species and grade.

BRE Building Research Establishment.

Everything wood should be Crown Cut A veneer which gives a more figured face, produced from flat slicing. CSA Canadian Standards Association – A North American certification scheme.

IWSc Institute of Wood Science. LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The Green Building Rating System developed by the US Green Building Council to provide a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. This is the equivalent to England’s BREEAM scheme.

BREEAM Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. A scheme to award points for environmental good practice in buildings other than houses. These points result in a building rating from Good to Excellent. This is applicable in England only. North America has a similar scheme called LEED.

Delamination Separation of veneers from substrate through failure of the bond.

BS British Standards is the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB). It works with manufacturing and service industries, businesses, governments and consumers to facilitate the production of British, European and international standards.

Doorblank A doorblank is a thick panel usually 45 or 54mm thick which can be trimmed and lipped to produce a finished door. They are normally a solid and timber or solid chipboard core faced with either plywood or MDF ready for finishing.

BWF British Woodworking Federation.

Durability Natural durability is the inherent resistance of wood to attack by wood destroying organisms.

Quarter Cut A veneer with a straight grain face produced by quarter slicing.

Euroclass B The highest level of reaction to fire performance of which wood based panels are capable.

SFI Sustainable Forest Initiative – A North American certification scheme.

Euroclass C An intermediate level of reaction to fire performance of which wood based panels are capable.

Sheet Length Dimension in the direction of the grain of the face of the sheet.

Fire Resistance / Fire Retardant A measure of the ability of a product, when part of a complete structure, to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another. Panel product fire resistance is identified under the Euroclass B & C system, whereas doors are normally measured in units of half hour.

Sheet Width Dimension perpendicular to the direction of the grain of the face of the sheet.

CARB 2 compliant The Californian Air Resources Board CARB system (which measures airborne emissions rather than the amount of the formaldehyde in the board) is emerging as the standard in the marketplace. The CARB 2 regulation will establish the toughest production standards in the world for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels. CE Mark Certificate European. All wood based panels intended for use in construction must be CE-marked in accordance with EN 13986. CE2+ CE2+ is awarded to plywood which has normally undergone Attestation System 2+ demonstrating it is suitable for use in structural applications. An independent organisation must test products to ensure they conform to this guarantee. CE4+ The CE4+ mark demonstrates that all tests for nonstructural use have been conducted. No independent organisation is involved with these tests. Chain of Custody (CoC) A generic phrase for systems that allow traceability of wood through the supply chain to the forest of origination. CPD Construction Products Directive (CPD) is a European legal framework regulating building products are fit for their purpose in terms of their technical performance. A product is CPD compliant if the manufacturer has successfully completed all the relevant performance tests. CPET Central Point of Expertise on Timber. CPET advises the Government on timber procurement in the public sector.

Density The amount of compression of boards equates to kg per m³, e.g. 630D, 720D.

FD30 Fire Door 30 – this identifies the door as guaranteeing to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another for 30 minutes, when part of a complete structure. This is certified under the BM TRADA Q Mark Third party certification scheme. FD60 Fire Door 60 – this identifies the door as guaranteeing to prevent the passage of fire from one area of a building to another for 60 minutes, when part of a complete structure. This is certified under the BM TRADA Q Mark Third party certification scheme. FSC Forest Stewardship Council – An international certification scheme. Harmonised Standard A principle European standard, made by CEN in accordance with a mandate from the European commission, consolidating the harmonised European requirements of a defined building product or group of building products. In the case of wood based panels, the Harmonised Standard is EN 13986.

MR Moisture Resistant – MR boards are treated to protect the product against moisture and high humidity so are suitable for use in these environments. MTCC Malaysian Timber Council Certification – A Malaysian certification scheme. PEFC Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification – An international certification scheme.

The Building Regulations A set of rules governing the selection of materials and the standard of workmanship in the construction of building in England and Wales. These rules are regulated and enforced by the Building Control service. TRADA Timber Research and Development Association. WBP Weather and boil proof plywood is suitable for exterior environments. They are manufactured with water resistant adhesives and can resist a certain amount of moisture. WBP plywood requires paint or varnish to protect the outer veneer from the elements.
