All about the Living Cell
What is a Living Cell Cells are the smallest unit of life Cells are basic structural and functional part of any living organism Cells are building blocks of living things Cells have the ability to replicate themselves
Parts of a Living Cell The main part is cytoplasm enclosed by a membrane These are made of biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids All cells contain hereditary information DNA to replicate into another cell Cells also contain RNA which regulate their functions
Subcellular components Membrane is the outer covering of the cells Cytoskeleton is the structure of the cell Genetic material which contain information regarding the cell properties Organelles which contain information to regulate the cell functions
Genetic material Two different kinds of genetic material are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) DNA contains the long term information storage RNA is used for information transportation Different proteins are used to encode the information
Origins Several theories exist and the two main theories First is that they came from meteorites hitting the earth Second is that they could have been synthesized during lightning striking a collection of material conducive of creating organic molecular substances. Cells emerged more than 3.5 billion years ago
Scientific history History Antonie van Leeuwenhoek teaches himself to make lenses, constructs basic optical microscopes and draws protozoa, such as Vorticella from rainwater and bacteria from his own mouth. Robert Hooke discovered cells in cork, then in living plant tissue using an early microscope
