ATTIRE THE BUILDING

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN I INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM IN DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY

SASINA NAKMONTANAKUM

Course title: ARCH DSGN I - Proliferate Instructor’s full name: Aj. Payap Pakdeelao Date of completion: May 2018 Project description: Proliferate is the project is about the brands genetic. It started with researching the methods, identities, and characteristics of the brands. I focused deeply about the background history that influenced the brand – Rick Owens. The second phase was exploring the materials and methods of making a product or new materials that will be used as the material/method of the last phase. The final architecture is the renovation of an abandon teahouse in Rome called ‘Tempio di Flora’. It is designed to be a hybrid building. The ground floor is connected to three parts of the area: retail experience, brand exhibition and a muiltipurpose arcade.

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: infographic Work medium: collages, computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: ‘Rick Owens’ brand analysis Work description: Rick Owens is the main brand of this project. His products are differentiated his brand from the others by its colors, techniques, materials and prices. He also has the furniture and interior decoration under the name ‘LMD/studio’ which coordinated with his wife – Michele Lamy. Owens’ works were influenced from the historical periods: primitivism, classicism and spiritual beliefs like paganism and animism. Alessi and ThermalTech is the other brands that have minor influences on this design. I only used its deformed shape/volume from Alessi and the protection from the extreme conditions of ThermalTech.

Original dimensions: 40 x 40 centimeters Work type: infographic Work medium: collages, computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: ‘Relationship between movement and garment’ Work description: How do clothes transform into architecture? Rick Owens produces a wide range of the techniques and materials. The mixture of materials, layering, dynamics and complex structures always raising questions in his shows. The questions often reflected issues in society such as ‘Why men cannot wear high heels?’ or ‘What is the standard in beauty?’ However, the usual collections for daily life despite his unusual collections that carry on the epic message that he wants to share to the world. The movements of figures are controlled by shape and form of clothes, which make the models cannot move independently under the clothe. How do the materials transform? I selected one of his work from the collection in fall 2017 ‘Improvised Ceremony’. It had an eccentric headgear and a huge padding coat. It is the unusual way to put the usual pieces of cloth together on the structure inside. In this case, I analyzed as a frame structure like a hoop skirt undergarment from the women’s fashion in the 18 th century. (the same period as the construction of Tempio di Flora) It supports the heavy lifting and also creates the interstitial space where the movement happens underneath. So, that is the idea of the main structure in this project – “To attire the building”.

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: infographic Work medium: collages Work title: ‘The spatial concept’ Work description: The collage shows the key components of the project. The building is a classicism architecture – Pantheon. It represents the style of the Tempio di Flora that looks like a small Greek temple style with the Doric columns, arches, etc. The suspicious installation from Rick Owens’ exhibition is the connector that adheres the building, underground space and the nature environment together. The basement shows the underwater in a cave that collects things together such as an Owens’ statue, his works, paganism and animism stuff.

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: infographic Work medium: collages Work title: ‘Rick Owens’ exhibition elements Work description: Rick Owens exhibited his fashion collections on the mannequins and some of his furniture designa. The exhibition had a massive suspicious installation art as the key to guide and lead people to the circulation in the event. These methods and elements are the strategy of developing the project.

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: infographic, technical drawings. Work medium: collages and computer-aided design Work title: ‘Site analysis – Tempio di Flora’ Work description: All of his stores locate at the famous fashion corners around the world. The economic area is important as well as where the target group (rich, fan club, common interested people) might hang around. For examples, Gangnam district in South Korea, a road between Shibuya and Harajuku in Japan, etc. In this project, it shows both economic area and natural environment. The architecture should remind people to the its historical background. The site should be a park or a place that surrounded by nature while it should be easily to access from the shopping area of the city. ‘Tempio di Flora’ is the best location that suits my criterions. It reflects the idea of classicism by its architectural design and the environment of nature embracing the site, but still near the elegance and striking shopping street – Via Vittorio Veneto. It is the tea-house constructed in 17th century by a France architect. It was a part of the building near the site which currently is the Arab Republic of Egypt. The underground of the building is the bunker called ‘Bunker Villa Ada Savoia’, it was made to protect the king and the queen of Italy in that time. ‘Tempio di Flora’ is abandoned. However, it was not dead. People who visited at the park might joined some street events. There has rarely informations of the building provided, but it has opportunity that behind the lower building, underneath the platform might access to some space: the bunker.

Original dimensions: 80 x 160 centimeters Work type: Technical drawings Work medium: collages, computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: Technical drawings Work description: How is it constructed? The building is lower than the street level. It starts with the platform and the upper building above the bunker and arcade. The partitions inside the basement are designed to control people to walk around the space and hang products with a two dressing rooms at the center attached to the open roof fountain with a massive half body of Rick Owens’ statue. There are toilets on the right side and office on the another side. The ceiling inspired by his installation art that leads people to continue their circulation. Above the base is a black liquid and a platform connects footpath and the upper building. The extension of the building is the exhibition area. It represents a garment. And the building is a body. It connects with spiral stairs and held by a hoop frame structure. All of the extension is covered with a black iconic fabric which shows the translucent, layering and disguises the activity inside. It will raise questions and wonders from people who passed by. Programs and function in the building Exhibition: 1st Fl. - Conceptual Fashion Show collections 2nd Fl. - Furniture 3rd Fl. - Past Fashion Shows Bunker: Retail Experiences Arcade and Lower building: Space for occasional fashion shows

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: spatial hierarchy Work medium: computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: ‘The spatial experience – entrance at the ground floor’ Work description: People can access the spaces from the pathway in the park where people can go by cars or public transportations. The footpath connects all of the park together. People must walk on the platform above the black liquid that reflects both the main building and the underground atmosphere. They go inside the building and choose whether going up or down with stairs outside the cella. The only way to go to arcade is walk through the underground space.t

Original dimensions: 40 x 40 centimeters Work type: spatial hierarchy Work medium: collages, computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: ‘The spatial experience – retail experience at the basement floor’ Work description: This is the left entrance to the retail experiences. In this floor, there are two entrances from the upper building and an exit at the center to the arcade. The lighting is simulated from the suspicious installation. The layered ceiling consists of lighting, concrete and mirror. It allows the reflection of the water above create the atmospheric of underwater. The shape of partitions is inspired from cave that have deformed volume and the curve lead people to continue moving through the space.

Original dimensions: 80 x 80 centimeters Work type: spatial hierarchy Work medium: computer-aided design and digital painting Work title: ‘The spatial experience – fountain at the basement floor’ Work description: This area is the fountain at the center of the basement floor. It also supports the water from the entrance which gradually drop because of the wind. At the center of the fountain located the giant Rick Owens’ statue “Iconic Rick himself statue everywhere”. Rick Owens always put his statue in every stores and exhibitions. It might change some context. He might be a mermaid man or a monster. However, his iconic image is top less muscle and long black hair.
