Tsunami Crisis in South East Asia
December 26, 2004 was a dark day in the history of the world. Phuket, the biggest island in Thailand, and which is located in the Andaman Sea of Southern Thailand, was particularly devastated by the “Tsunami waves”. Cape Panwa located on the southern coast of the island was especially decimated. It was a traumatic day for many people, not only here in Thailand but all around the world. After the tsunami hit, Phuket’s environment was completely changed, including nature, landscape, architecture and tourism. All tourist travel was reduced greatly after the tsunami’s attack. Hotel business in Phuket has been stagnating since this tragic event.

Abstract + Proposal Life after the big wave “Tsunami”
Five years later, Phuket’s environment and Phuket’s architecture are being recreated to become the most unique and beautiful island once again, but the project of Hilton Hotel Corporation is still being held back, leaving their site vacant. For Thai people like me, I would like to help resuscitate and promote Phuket tourism and hotel industry to make a comeback and have it boom once again. In my project, I will take the strongest points of Phuket, which include exquisite environment, abundant natural resources, and unique culture, and apply these to my design. These qualities will attract travelers from all over the world and bring tourism back to Phuket once again.
In term of design concept, and design programming, I will use the elements of nature to make a connection between people, culture and environments. The resort will provide living space, environment, relaxation and a sense of well-being for the guests before they go back to their lives at home. Thailand is often called the “Land of Smiles”, not only because visitors love its natural beauty and historical riches, but also because of the country’s friendly people and fascinating culture.

Introduction Thailand–Bangkok–Phuket
Thailand-Bangkok-Phuket one of the most popular tourist areas in Thailand
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to the Thai mainland by a bridge. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea, and formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoyed a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in the foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

_Phuket’s Climate
Krabi
Phuket has three seasons. The cool season (November through February), the hot season (March through May), and the rainy season (May, September and Octorber). The climate is dictated by the monsoon winds. That is the direction of the prevailing winds caused by the difference in the way oceans and land heat. From May to November the great land mass of Asia is warmer than the Indian Ocean. The colder, heavier air over the Indian Ocean pushes into the warm air over the continental land mass. This causes the prevailing winds to come from the southwest over the Indian Ocean, bringing lots of warm moist air and therefore lots of rain. Then as the Asian continent cools from November to April, the ocean becomes warmer than the land. The prevailing wind direction changes to come from the northeast. That is from the great land mass of China bringing cooler, drier air and good weather.

Phuket Information
Phuket is an island with no boundaries
_Phuket’s Geography Phuket lies off the west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea, approximately 890km from Bangkok. It is Thailand’s largest island at 550sq km, roughly the same size as Singapore, and is surrounded by many smaller islands that add a further 70 sq km to its total land area. Phuket is separated from the mainland by the Chong Pak Phra channel at its northernmost point, where a causeway connects the island to the mainland.
_Phuket’s History Phuket was known as Bukit, meaning Crystal Mountain. Phuket is a town with a long history. In centuries past, Phuket was an important trading post on the eastern shore, handing shipping and dealing with sailors from the Arab,Malay, India, Burmar and China in 16th century, the island was also well-know to Europeans,as first Portuguese and Dutch, then English and French sailed to its fabled shore. The island enjoyed an unprecedented surge in wealth when tin was found to be available in large quantities in the nearby shadows. Ambitious, hardworking miner and business flocked to the island from the province of south China (the 19th century)
Sasithorn Saehoo
_Phuket’s Architecture The cultural built heritage of Phuket is a reflection of the settlement’s prosperity during the tin boom days. The townscape is unique in Thailand, but resembles that of the British Striats Settlements, which comprised, Penang, Malacca and Singapore. The architecture is usually called ‘Sino-Portuguese’ by the Bangkok architects today. Phuket town was really modeled after British colonial Penang, and that was the origin of any European influence on its architecture. Upon close examination, it is evident that Phuket’s shophouses and villas resemble those in Penang in form, materials and design, although the occasional Thai motif reminds us that we are in Thailand. Phuket oral tradition in several cases claim that Penang architects, builders and materials were brought to Phuket for its best mansions.

Panwa beach – Cape Panwa – Phuket – Thailand
The Phuket Panwa Resort and Spa is located on a private beach of Cape Panwa, the most beautiful and quiet corner of eastern Phuket. Three sites within the Hilton Hotel location are on the coastline beaches surrounded by the Andaman Sea. The advantage of the hotel location, situated on a private hillside and coastline beach, is that it protects the hotel from waves and monsoons by a ridgeline of coral reeves.

Creating a “well being experience through five elements of nature. The guiding principle behind everything we do is to motivate and help people to become healthy. With Nature as the setting, we facilitate the empowerment of our guests to make lifestyle changes to bring out the best in the body’s natural healing abilities for both wellness and longevity.
_Experience Optimal Health
_Physical Health
Optimal health has three dimensions which are physical health, nutritional health and emotional health. Like a perfect triangle consisting of three equal sides, improved well-being can be achieved by balancing these three dimensions of good health. Health is a balance of proper nutrition, physical activity, and emotional wellness.
The human body was designed to move, but modern technology has reduced that natural urge. The automobile has become an overused conveyance so that we no longer consider walking. Our TV remote controls eliminate the need to get up. In our workplaces, robotics and machinery have reduced human activity exponentially, and our automated kitchen and yard accessories all contribute to our society moving toward an increasingly motionless lifestyle. With so many of us leading sedentary lifestyles, poor physical conditioning has become an epidemic in North America. Fifteen per cent of the population is obese and over 40 per cent is overweight. The need to start moving our bodies has never been more urgent. Being physically fit does not require that you engage in serious physical sports or activities. It simply means getting active on a regular, day-by-day basis. Performing yard work, cleaning your house, regular fast walking, taking the stairs and becoming actively playful with children are just a few activities that can all become initiatives toward becoming more physically active.

Creating a well being experience through
five elements of nature Health is a balance of proper nutrition, physical activity and emotional wellness.
_Nutritional Health
_Emotional Health
The ancient proverb “You are what you eat continues to hold true in today’s modern society. A direct link exists between Western diseases and the chemical-ridden processed and refined foods that we eat. As a society, we have been seduced by the clever marketing of processed food manufacturers without considering the risks to our health through consuming foods that provide zero or almost no nutritional value.
In the last decade, health experts and practitioners have aligned their thinking, agreeing that emotional health is by far one of the greatest contributing factors in achieving optimal health. We know for certain that our ability to be emotionally aware, to express our emotions, to manage stress, to have healthy relationships and to be capable of developing the emotions of peace, joy and contentment all contribute significantly to experiencing optimal health and longevity.
Realizing that the goal and focus of processed-food manufacturers is profit, rather than consumer health, more and more people are beginning to demand food that serves their best interest. As a result, a fast-moving trend is developing for living, fresh whole foods that enhance health, vitality and longevity. Every week, you make hundreds of decisions about what you eat, how much of it, and when. The quality of these decisions relates directly to the level of health or sickness you will experience. Eating is much like creating: what you choose to eat creates the health you have today. We all have the ability to create health.
Unprocessed emotions have a direct effect on our physiology. Stress, prolonged anger and anxiety cause blood vessels to become constricted, taxing the heart and wreaking havoc with the nervous system in essence, putting the whole body in a state of tension and weakening our immune system. This can prove much more detrimental to our well-being in the long run than lack of exercise or nutrition, notwithstanding how important these factors are.

Five Elements of Nature
Wind, Wood, Water, Stone, and Fire
Five Elements of Nature; namely Wind, Water, Stone, Wood, and Fire, along with various other forces of Nature, sustain life and maintain equilibrium in our Planet. Imbalance in any of these Elements leads to chaos. An invisible equation operates within and outside these Five Elements of Nature to maintain the equilibrium on our Planet. These five Elements of Nature, i.e. Wind, Water, Stone, Wood and Fire exist in our body too. Like Nature, the imbalance of any of these Five Elements in our body also leads to the destruction of our health and life.

Group of traditional Thai houses
In spite of the influence of other great cultures of the world such as Indian, Chinese, Khmer as well as Burmese, being incorporated in its decorative elements, the architectural style of Thai homes remains relatively simple. Its primary characteristics are determined by local climatic conditions, the availability of building materials, and the needs of the people, the majority of whom pursued an agricultural based lifestyle.

Family members build their houses in the same area, including parent’s house, son/daughter’s house, living area, kitchen, and terraces that connect all areas together. Lobby The lobby is the first area that guests experience and is the starting point of transition to the other areas of the resort. The arrival of travelers is comparable to the movement of the wind that comes with fresh air to the wellness resort. Therefore, I chose wind, as one of nature’s five elements, to be the main theme for the lobby and to represent the lobby as the welcoming movement. I developed the concept of wind by creating open spaces around buildings which easily circulate wind from the outside because the project is located on the highest area of the resort. For the interior spaces, I focused my design on ventilation and decorative objects that related to the wind.
Phuk et Panwa R esort & Spa
Bar As bar is a part of the lobby experience, it comes with the same design concept as the lobby’s which is wind. I designed the master plan by keeping in mind that wind circulation can flow around the wind bar and the guests can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake, the rice field, as well as the beach when they are exploring the resort.

The organic restaurant is located on Small Island and surrounded with organic gardens, from which guests can choose a variety of fresh vegetables for their meals. I used wood from five elements to be the main theme and represent organic plants in the restaurant. Wood and plants would be the main materials, and be incorporated by using a design technique such as living walls. In addition, the restaurant opens to the outside, creating an indoor/outdoor relationship for weddings or private parties in the garden.

Spa + Fitness The spa and the fitness building is composed of two floors. The first floor includes the lobby, fitness center, and the swimming pool. The second floor includes 5 single massage rooms, 2 wet rooms, 2 double massage rooms, 1 guest room and 1 specialty suite. The design elements for this building are water and stone because they are the main materials used in the spa treatments. Stone and water provide natural healing and balancing of your 5 elements, thus bringing harmony and good health to body and soul. For the overall design of the building, I created interlocking spaces between the indoor areas of the lobby and the outdoor areas of the swimming pool. These ideas were driven from the element of water. Stone was used for the second floor of the spa, as it represents a fundamental symbol of calm and serenity. These ideas created space by using stone elements and it will be the major material for this area.

Restaurant The element of fire is related to action, motivation, passion, and intelligence. The main restaurant is a good representation of the fire concept because it energizes and activates. The element of fire is used for cooking and also represents spiciness, which is common to most Thai food. Therefore, I used fire as the fifth element for the main restaurant, and used light and color as symbolic features of fire for decoration in the restaurant. In addition, the location of the restaurant is on the north side of the beach. Guests will feel relaxed during sunrise and sunset while enjoying their breakfast and dinner.
