WHY CHOOSE SASKATOON PUBLIC SCHOOLS? • Our goal is for our students to engage in relevant and challenging learning opportunities to enhance their academic, personal and social/cultural growth. We expect all students to demonstrate the following four values: Respect, Excellence, Joy and Responsibility. • We believe in safe, caring and accepting schools. Our goal is to provide school environments that are safe and caring places where excellence in learning is a priority and everyone feels included. Our schools are open to all. We want every student to feel respected and have a sense of belonging. • We are engaging and empowering our students through Collegiate Renewal, our award-winning strategic learning priority. The goal of Collegiate Renewal is for all high school students to be engaged in their learning so that they will graduate as active participants in lifelong learning and as responsible and caring citizens in the community, nation and world. In pursuit of this goal, we will focus intensively on the engagement, achievement and graduation rates of First Nation, Inuit and Métis students. This work is done in a number of ways such as increasing student voice through advisory programs that promote collaboration between students and teachers, investing in professional development for educators and emphasizing formative assessment to increase student achievement. • We inspire our students to reach their potential. Our collegiates are home to a number of unique academies and programs for students with specific interests. Many of these programs can only be found at Saskatoon Public Schools. Whether it is challenging students through our advanced program, providing valuable hands-on learning through our apprenticeship courses or introducing them to their natural environment through our education for sustainable development offerings, we are providing experiences they will never forget. Learn more about program opportunities on page 3 of this book.
• We believe in being culturally responsive. We want our learning environments, our classroom teachings and our instructional practices to be respectful of our diverse community. We collaborate with community members with the shared goal of developing strong learners, schools and systems. Being more responsive will improve student achievement and engagement with an emphasis on First Nation, Inuit and Métis students.
Newcomer Student Centre
We are welcoming the world into our schools. In September 2014, we welcomed 780 new students to Saskatoon Public Schools, the majority of whom are new to Canada. Our English as an Additional Language program is growing to respond to the needs of our new students and staffing support has been added. All students new to Canada are provided assistance through our Newcomer Student Centre, located at our school division office.

GRADE NINE COMPULSORY CLASSES Every Saskatoon Public Schools’ collegiate offers the regular English Grade 9 program. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 09 As students make their transition into Grade 9, they will continue to exercise their abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing. Assessment will be based on student ability to compose and create, comprehend and respond, and assess and reflect. Major units of study will include: All that I Am, Indigenous and Norse Narratives, Conflicts, Issues and Choices, Exploring Loyalty, Love and Relationships, Surviving and Conquering, and Our Shared Linguistic and Cultural Roots. MATHEMATICS 09 In Math 9, students will increase their logical thinking, number sense and spatial sense through topics of study such as rational numbers, exponents, linear equations, and geometry. Math 9 will be taught throughout the whole year. SCIENCE 09 This course is an introduction to a vast range of scientific topics. It covers atoms, elements and introductory chemistry; electricity, circuits and energy production; cellular division, reproduction and human development; space, our solar system and the universe. These topics are studied using instructional technologies, hands-on activities, and inquiry in order to develop basic science skills, scientific habits of mind and an understanding of science’s role in our society. SOCIAL STUDIES 09 Grade 9 students will explore worldviews of ancient societies and connections between the past and the present. Students will consider how worldviews are shaped and how they are expressed by people living in a particular time and place. They will examine issues related to contact between societies with differing worldviews. The overriding goals of the course include: interaction and interdependence, dynamic relationships, power and authority, and resources and wealth. These goals are learned through exploring ancient societies to develop an understanding of anthropology, archaeology, philosophy, geography, politics, law, economics and environment.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION, HEALTH AND CAREER ED 09 This full year, every day course integrates three areas of learning and is an opportunity to engage students in action planning for one’s physical, mental and emotional health and well-being: • • •
Grade 9 Physical Education is based around four main leaning objectives, which are being independently prepared and willing to participate, demonstrating positive relationships, being independently active and displaying skillful movement patterns. The course is designed to improve students’ abilities in all four of these areas through individual and team activities. An ongoing emphasis is placed on developing and improving physical fitness and encouraging daily health and wellness habits. Health Education, as part of a comprehensive school health program, will support students in developing a solid foundation for attaining and maintaining a balanced life. Career Education is designed to develop the competencies required by all people to successfully manage their work and life. This renewed curriculum reflects the latest career development research, updated technology and recent resources, as well as responding to changing economic forces within the province.
PRACTICAL AND APPLIED ARTS 09 Students are able to experience three Practical and Applied Arts modules in the form of a survey course. Each collegiate has unique program offerings that are represented in their practical and applied arts survey. ARTS EDUCATION 09 The Grade 9 Arts Education course involves learning experiences through each of the four strands of arts: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. Students are invited to consider arts expressions that reflect the theme Taking Action. As a foundation to the exciting and experiential learning through the arts in high school, you and your classmates will explore topics of concern to youth. How can we express ourselves through the arts? How can we, as artists in all methods, create or inspire the conditions for change? How do dancers, musicians, actors and visual artists effect change or bring awareness to issues? The goal of this course is to express your beliefs, values and ideas ultimately taking action through the arts, on a topic that is relevant to you.
Collegiates also offer English as an Additional Language and resource support programs at the Grade 9 level, but options for scheduling may vary. Please contact individual collegiates to learn more about student support programs.

GRADE 9 PROGRAM Bedford believes in helping students transition to Grade 9 as smoothly as possible. Grade 9 students are placed in a TAG (teacher advisory group) for two compulsory classes. TAGS remain together as a group and are taught by the same teacher. We also have modified programming, EAL, Resource and a READ teacher for additional support. Bedford offers Math 9 Plus, Regular and Advanced Math. Math 9 alternates with Practical & Applied Arts for one semester and runs every day the other semester. Math 9 Plus is designed to support concept mastery and is taken every day both semesters. Students planning to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma program usually apply to take our Advanced/Pre-IB compulsory classes and take French 9 as their elective. Students in the Advanced program may opt for English/social or math/science only. Advanced students choose compulsory classes at a gifted level and also take the Young Urban Planner course. The course encourages students to work in partnership with local community members to develop projects to improve our neighborhood and city. Bedford Road also offers a Hockey program (fee for program) for both males and females. Emphasis is on the improvement of individual skills and basic team tactics. Bus transportation is provided and equipment may be stored in the school while still accessible for other hockey commitments. The program provides students with ice and non-ice time needed to meet Grade 9 Phys. Ed curriculum outcomes including heath and careers. Pre-engineering 10 is a unique and innovative specialized program that provides students with a practical hands-on experience and problem solving skills in an interactive state-of-the-art lab environment. Students will learn design fundamentals, and work with robotic, pneumatic, electrical, and other technologies to acquire knowledge, skills and attributes that will be used to solve, communicate and document the solution to an authentic engineering problem. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a two year program that starts in Grade 11 for students who are academically motivated, service orientated and who desire the rigorous international curriculum that focuses on our role as citizens in a global society. The International Baccalaureate Organization’s goal is to provide students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment, think creatively and critically, and respect others in our global community.

GRADE 9 PROGRAM Welcome to Grade 9! At Centennial Collegiate, there are initiatives to help students transition to high school with ease and confidence. Students from our area elementary schools are invited to Centennial Collegiate during their Grade 8 year to watch drama, dance and band productions, as well as sporting events. By the time Grade 9 starts, many students know their way around the school and feel comfortable navigating the hallways, becoming involved with drama productions, sports teams and experiencing the many clubs at Centennial Collegiate. Over 80% of our students in Grade 9 are involved in an extra-curricular program. Teachers from elementary schools and Centennial Collegiate meet to consider academic programming that will assist students with being successful in Grade 9. This commitment to excellence helps students quickly adjust to the rigor of high school with the majority of our Grade 9’s attaining honour roll status at midterm. Our Advisory program helps create a caring environment within the larger school community. Students, in small grade-level groups, meet once a week to hone study skills, read, work through team building activities or work on charity events. Students are with the same group of peers and advisory teacher for the four years. Centennial Collegiate prides itself on having many academic opportunities for students. The soccer and dance academies, which allow students to discover or pursue a passion, are popular programs for Grade 9 students. Parlez-vous français? Centennial Collegiate offers French Immersion for those wanting to earn their bilingual certificate in French. Centennial’s Math 9 Plus program helps students who require more support in math. This individualized program gives students additional instruction in math to help prepare them for the various math pathways in Grade 10. Every attempt is made to keep Grade 9 classes small so that each student can connect to his/her teacher, thus improving a student’s success. GRADE 9 PROGRAM Evan Hardy has a rich tradition in academics, athletics and the performing arts, all of which are blended into our Grade 9 programming. We offer a wide variety of programming to meet the unique and diverse needs of our learning community. From the time our Grade 9 team engages in the transition process with our elementary schools, our focus is on creating a safe and successful move to high school. Student Services counsellors, support program teachers and Grade 9 teachers prepare well in advance to ensure student strengths and needs are well known and accommodated before Grade 8 students reach our hallways. Once classes begin, whether they be regular, enriched or individually modified, a strong foundational provincial curriculum blends with our school goal “to engage all learners through formative assessment”. In September 2014, our collegiate began offering the advanced program for academically gifted students. Student progress is closely monitored and communicated with students, staff and parents to ensure learners’ needs are continually evaluated, students are appropriately challenged and success is celebrated. Co-teaching, offered in most Grade 9 core subject areas, and the Math 9 Plus Program, allow provision of individualized and remedial instruction to students who need it. Ongoing counselling and support programs are available for all students. Teachers, staff and students work hard to create an atmosphere of support and belonging. A yearly fall retreat allows the Grade 9 class to build a sense of identity and community. Weekly “Flex Time” promotes opportunities for students to “soulabrate” school success through assemblies and pep rallies, exciting SRC events, Just Read or Supportive Instruction, a student-choice targeted tutoring session. Extensions through our extra-curricular program allow students to stretch their talents, interests and skills.

GRADE 9 PROGRAM Our Grade 9 program is designed to help students transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 and into a high school setting. A small group of staff work together as a team in setting goals and developing the academic program. We provide a safe, caring and culturally inclusive learning environment and build positive relationships with all students. Our goal is to help students develop independent thinking, self-confidence and a sense of social responsibility as they discover their own strengths and talents. We recognize that students have a natural curiosity and need for relevance and meaning in what they are studying. Connecting their learning experiences in a meaningful way is crucial in keeping students engaged and active learners. To foster student engagement, we equip students with the necessary skills to plan and assess their own learning To meet these goals we provide an integrated curriculum that balances academics (with emphasis on literacy and numeracy), artistic, practical and applied arts and career education. The curriculum prepares students for senior high school courses and teaches about human values including respect, honesty, trust, determination and responsibility. Career education and service projects both within the school and community foster qualities that will help students be successful citizens. All students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities and outdoor educational opportunities, which teach them to meet new physical and social challenges.

DIVERSE COMMUNITY At Tommy Douglas, we offer programming to meet the needs of many students. We offer a broad-based curricular program that allows students countless choices in electives, including Dance, Musical Theatre, Band, Digital Photography, Visual Arts and Practical and Applied Arts. We also offer enriched and honours programs leading to optional Advanced Placement courses in a student’s Grade 12 year. Functional Living Skills (FLS) offers programming for young adults with special needs. In August 2009 our new Softball Academy began for students who wish to follow their passion for softball through this unique academic program. Tommy Douglas is also a designated Advanced Placement (AP) school. This program is currently offered in English Language Arts and is an option for those students who excel and wish to further enrich their experience in the subject area. The course also carries the potential to earn a university or college credit prior to leaving high school. As an AP school, students can take any AP exam offered in any subject area, although this would require individual study and preparation.

GRADE 9 PROGRAM A student’s Grade 9 year at Tommy Douglas Collegiate provides them with the core classes while allowing them to experience many of the elective courses prior to their Grade 10 year. This transition year into high school is important in developing a student’s connection to their peers and teachers, as well as their role as an active learner within the school community. In order to support this transition, all students are part of an advisory program (called Tiger Time) that sees each student placed in small mentor groups with a teacher advisor. This advisory program ensures that all students gain a sense of belonging and receive the support necessary for academic and personal achievement. Additional supports include a literacy teacher, resource teachers and English as an Additional Language support teacher. Those students who find Math challenging may be recommended for the Math 9 Plus program which allows for additional support in building the skills necessary for success in future math classes. All Grade 9 compulsory courses are available at the Regular, Modified and Enriched levels. All students will take the compulsory classes as well as an elective class. GRADE 9 PROGRAM The main goal of Walter Murray’s Grade 9 program is to support student transition from Grade 8 to 9 using a variation of a middle years model within a high school. We want students to feel connected to our school and their learning. The Grade 9 programming at Walter Murray has been structured so students are not overwhelmed by the physical space of our large collegiate and by the numbers of students and staff. Students are grouped into cohorts based on programming choices. Please note—all Grade 9 program groupings provide the core Grade 9 classes. The Grade 9 experience at Walter Murray is an interdisciplinary, project-based program that meets Grade 9 curriculum outcomes. Teachers work collaboratively within student grouping to deliver programming that addresses all students needs within the same classroom. We have an EAL support teacher, a resource teacher, and a literacy teacher involved in co-teaching and supporting students in our programming cohorts. Within the Grade 9 compulsory courses there are varying levels of integration with the program groupings. Students who have had significant difficulties with regular math programming may be candidates for Math 9 Plus, a course designed to reinforce foundational concepts.

Belonging in this school has overall opened the doors for me to succeed. I love getting a choice in the time my classes are, working at my own pace and having the teachers to explain, help, as well as giving me the freedom to choose what and how I want to do it. I am grateful for everything this school has done for me.” “I think it’s great. Working at your own pace is a blessing we didn’t have in high school, so you don’t feel the pressure of having to meet anyone’s (your classmates) standards or falling behind.” “I like how flexible RW is because we are all adults now and most of us have jobs or kids, so the setup is what makes it be a reality for me and allows me to be successful.” “People come here because they WANT to better their lives, not because they have to so I think this is the best school I’ve been to by far!”
