SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
1. Arena Operator Level # 2 Refrigeration Course
September 9 - 13, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday, AND 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Friday)
NOTE: There will be NO TSASK exam as part of this course Unfortunately, TSASK doesn’t have the staff resources to proctor the exam. Participants can challenge the exam at one of TSASK’s exam sitting as listed on their calendar (https://www.tsask.ca/boiler-pressure-vessels/powerengineers/examination/exam-calendar).

Description: This intensive five-day course will provide participants with an overview of modern industrial refrigeration systems and their safe operation. Topics will include thermodynamics, operation and maintenance of refrigeration plants, refrigeration components, equipment and controls, and refrigerants and brines. The course is challenging, and participants should have a basic understanding of refrigeration systems and some mechanical aptitude.
2. Facility Management Module 1 – Health and Safety in Recreation
September 10, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Presenter: Joel Friesen
Description: This course will assist supervisors and workers in identifying and controlling workplace H&S concerns and hazards. Topics include understanding and meeting provincial legislation, identifying, and dealing with hazards faced daily by workers including slip and falls, chemical safety, safe lifting, ladders, sprains and strains, weather, fatigue and dehydration, confined space awareness training, facility chemical and fossil fuel audit, and incident reporting.
3. Facility Management Module 3 – Asset Management
September 11, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Presenters: Dan Gallagher, Field Consultant, and Tim Hanna, SPRA Facility and Training Consultant
Description: This course provides an overview of Asset Management and Capital Planning for municipal recreation practitioners. This course is designed to help supervisors, managers, directors, volunteers, Boards, and Council develop sound management practices to improve the overall management of fixed recreation assets to lengthen their useful life, and plan for future upgrades and replacements. Proper asset planning and the implementation of preventative maintenance practices benefits your assets and community. Recreation examples and tools will be discussed and emphasized during the course. Finally, SPRA has developed an Inventory Register spreadsheet tool to help recreationists get started in the collection of Asset Management information.
4. Facility Management Module 2 – HR and Leadership
September 12, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Presenter: Wayne Hellquist, Future Quest Consulting
Description: Leadership is an essential ingredient for successful supervisors. The learning objectives for this session include understanding the importance of leadership in a dynamic and changing work environment, appreciating the different types of leadership styles, identifying traits of exceptional leaders, knowing the difference between leadership and management, understanding when to lead and when to follow, identifying personal leadership strengths and weaknesses using Colour Spectrums, and establishing a leadership action plan. This session will help you create and maintain a high-performance recreation team.
5. Arena Operator Level #1 – Ice Installation Course
September 9 – 10, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Presenter: Canadian Arena Services
Description: This course provides a detailed account of ice installation and maintenance practices. The practical work of this course will focus on ice installation. Emphasis will be on the best practices for building ice, painting ice, installing logos, etc. Ice maintenance will be discussed more in the classroom portion of the course. Several complementary topics are discussed, as well, to provide participants with a well-rounded knowledge of arena industry practices. All the aspects discussed are related to the successful and safe operation of an arena facility. Furthermore, this course will discuss and share best practices with the registrants. Participants need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear (cleats are strongly recommended) to spend periods of time on the ice surface.
6. Building Maintenance Level #1
September 11 – 12, 2024 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Presenter: Craig Geisler
Description: This course provides an overview of facility maintenance practices and practical advice. This course is designed to help operators and maintenance staff understand the workings of components within their facilities and know the terminology to deal with contractors. From there, the operators and maintenance staff can develop sound maintenance practices to improve the operation and useful life of the fixed assets in their facility. Proper planning and the implementation of preventative maintenance practices benefits your department and community.
