VIEWBOOK 2015 – 2016
REAL EDUCATION REAL CAREERS REAL SUCCESS – THAT’S WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER AT SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC. As Saskatchewan’s leading public institution for post-secondary technical education and skills training, we’re committed to helping you forge an exciting future. It all starts with The Polytechnic Advantage. WHAT IS THE POLYTECHNIC ADVANTAGE? Like other polytechnics in Canada, Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers strong academic offerings, key links to industry and applied research opportunities. Here’s what these mean to you: STRONG ACADEMIC OFFERINGS Saskatchewan Polytechnic has more than 150 programs to choose from. We offer degrees, diplomas, certificates and apprenticeship training that lead to rewarding careers in business, information technology, health, mining, transportation and other sectors of the economy. As well, many of our programs let you put your Sask Polytech credentials toward a professional designation, advanced professional standing or a university degree. Our classes are small. This makes for a more personalized and effective learning experience. You’ll receive one-onone attention from instructors who know you on a first-name basis. You’ll learn by doing. Hands-on learning opportunities let you apply what you learn in the classroom to realworld situations. Depending on your program, you’ll reinforce your skills through labs, clinical placements, field investigations, outdoor camps, machinery time, workplace practicums and/or co-op work terms. Our grads are in demand. There’s a reason a we have a consistently high grad employment rate, and why we score top marks with employers. Our focus on applied learning develops marketable skills that prepare you to contribute from Day 1 on the job. The blend of knowledge, skills and experience that you’ll acquire here is a big advantage in today’s market, in which employers often compete for grads who can hit the ground running.
KEY LINKS TO INDUSTRY You’ll benefit from our close relationships with employers. Saskatchewan Polytechnic not only develops curriculum in consultation with employers, but we also ensure that it’s up-to-date and relevant through program advisory committees. About 700 representatives lend their expertise to these committees, which include employers, practitioners and grads. Connecting with employers is easier than you think. We’ll help you reach out to employers through innovative networking events, on-campus career fairs, employer visits and program-targeted career postings. APPLIED RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES You’ll sharpen your critical thinking skills. Saskatchewan Polytechnic students and faculty increasingly team up with business, industry and community partners on applied research projects. For instance, in our labs we help our partners test high-tech innovations that they plan to commercialize. We also head off-campus to conduct research that helps them solve practical problems. You’ll enrich your education. Participating in applied research will show you how classroom learning translates into real life. It’s a great confidence-booster that will prepare you to meet the challenges of today’s workplaces. It’s also one of the key learning strategies that give polytechnics a leading edge.

DID YOU KNOW?
All of the photos in this publication feature Saskatchewan Polytechnic students, alumni and staff!
HOW TO APPLY WHEN SHOULD I APPLY? You can apply as soon as you are enrolled in the courses and at the grade level you require for admission. For instance, for a program where Grade 12 is an admission requirement, you may apply in September of your Grade 12 year. Most programs are first qualified, first admitted. More information can be found at saskpolytech.ca/admissions.
YOU’RE AMONG GOOD COMPANY More undergrads graduate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic each year than from any other post-secondary institution in the province.
» High-demand programs are open for application from 8:00 a.m., October 1, to 4:30 p.m., February 15 (Saskatchewan times) each academic year. All supporting documentation is required by 4:30 p.m. (Saskatchewan time), February 28.
SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC’S HIGH-DEMAND PROGRAMS ARE: • Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology • Medical Radiologic Technology • Dental Hygiene • Power Engineering Technology • Medical Laboratory Assistant • Practical Nursing • Medical Laboratory Technology • Psychiatric Nursing
HOW SHOULD I APPLY?
Online = $50 saskpolytech.ca
By mail = $75 Print a copy of the application form from the website or obtain a paper copy from any campus
In person = $75 Visit Registration Services located in any of the main campus locations
Applicants who apply online can pay the application fee by Visa, Mastercard or Interac Online. You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO? Along with your completed application form and application fee, you will need to include: • An official transcript of your high-school marks. If you have already completed the high-school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; OR • A preliminary statement of high-school standing. If you are currently completing high-school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results – just complete the preliminary statement of high-school standing on the application form. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1. • All other (if any) documents required by the program. • High-demand programs have selection criteria in addition to regular academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are listed on our program web pages at saskpolytech.ca.
» Interested in Nursing? Applications to the Saskatchewan Collaborative
Bachelor of Science in Nursing program are accepted from October 1 until February 15. Visit sasknursingdegree.ca/admissions for details.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from Saskatchewan Polytechnic letting you know your start date, tuition fees and other costs (such as books, supplies and students’ association fees). If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship. In your acceptance letter, we will ask you to pay a $500 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply. If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you apply, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake.
WHAT IF I DO NOT MEET THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS? If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options: • If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through programs in our School of Academic and Career Education (see page 35) or through your high school or regional college. • You may qualify for special admission. Contact a Sask Polytech counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include: – use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that tests math and English skills, and/or – consideration of successfully completed courses and/or credentials. See saskpolytech.ca/specialadmissions for details.

• Y ou may be able to begin your studies as a part-time, unclassified student. Unclassified students are students who are registered in a Sask Polytech course but who are not currently admitted to a Sask Polytech program. Because English is the language of instruction and examination at Sask Polytech, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills to gain admission.
» For programs with math admission requirements, previous Saskatchewan math requirements are also accepted.
READY OR NOT? We can help. If you’re heading into a health care or technology program, prepare yourself by signing up for Math for Health Care Providers or Pre-Technology Math. Courses run mid- to late August. For more information, call 1-866-467-4278.
FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION TUITION, FEES AND EXPENSES Application fees are due with your application. Tuition and other assessed fees are due at the time of your registration. Check saskpolytech.ca for tuition and other assessed fee details.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Full-time students may receive financial assistance under the Canada and Saskatchewan Student Loans programs, including the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship for new Grade 12 graduates. Part-time students may receive assistance under the Canada Student Loans Program for Part-time Students.
SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC HAS MORE THAN 150 PROGRAMS TO CHOOSE FROM ranging from Practical Nursing to Professional Cooking.
AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Saskatchewan Polytechnic gives away $2 million in student awards each academic year. Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers student awards for every certificate and diploma program at every campus. You don’t have to be a brainiac to receive a student award. Not all student awards are based on marks – some are based on financial need or things like community or volunteer involvement. Some bursaries and scholarships are available to all Sask Polytech students, while others are for students attending a specific campus or program, or for education equity students. Once you’ve been accepted as a student, you can apply online for an award or scholarship between June 1 and July 15. Once you’re on campus, there are other scholarship opportunities available. Check the awards guide on the scholarships page on saskpolytech.ca.
WHY SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC? We offer recognition of prior learning so you can get credit for your past learning whether it was in a classroom or in the real world.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING AND TRANSFER CREDIT SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC VALUES YOUR PRIOR LEARNING Save time and money as you reach your goals. Through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process, you can seek academic credit for the knowledge you’ve already gained through life and work experiences. PLAR considers a variety of ways people learn, such as: • industry training • on-the-job training • volunteer work • work experience • workshops More information about PLAR can be found at saskpolytech.ca.
TRANSFER CREDIT It is a fact that some college students go on to university, some university students go on to college, and no one wants to waste their time and money studying the same thing twice. Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers transfer credit opportunities which give you: • greater flexibility • better return on investment • savings on tuition and expenses To learn more about transfer credit, visit saskpolytech.ca/transfer-credit.

The Schools Model is a way to organize full-credit academic programs. It is a common practice in post-secondary education, especially among polytechnics in Canada. By grouping similar programs into schools, students will have learning opportunities with evolving interdisciplinary and interprofessional fields of study, and industry will more clearly understand our programming. In the Saskatchewan Polytechnic model, programs have been organized into eight schools in the economic sector and four schools in the public service sector.

ANIMAL AND BIOSCIENCES Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s two Animal and BioSciences programs can take you in so many directions. As a BioScience Technology grad, you can choose to work in agricultural or medical research, animal or plant sciences, quality control, micro- and molecular biology or environmental science. As a Veterinary Technology grad, you can put your skills and love of animals to work at a farm, zoo, government agency or veterinary clinic, or in research, education or sales. AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES. You’ll get plenty of hands-on training on- and off-campus. BioScience Technology students participate in a four-week industry practicum, while Vet Tech students spend one practicum in a small-animal veterinary practice and another in a mixed- or large-animal practice or research facility.
ENRICHED EDUCATION. BioScience Technology students may have the opportunity to carry out research in Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s BioScience Applied Research Centre, which works with industry partners in the development of innovative new products and technologies. Students in the Veterinary Technology program complete their final semester at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine, working with experienced veterinary technologists and leading veterinary specialists.
EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS. Veterinary Technology grads are eligible to write an exam to become Registered Veterinary Technologies, which qualifies them to work across Canada as well as the United States. Graduates of both programs can use their diploma as a stepping stone to university degree programs.

You’re analytical, with an eye for detail, at home in a lab ... or maybe you thrive in a creative environment, the outdoors or working with machinery. Careers in mining, energy and manufacturing require a diversity of skills. Our school’s programs train students in everything from engineering technology, welding and industrial mechanics to electronics, ironworking and underground mining. COOL TOOLS.
IN SYNC WITH INDUSTRY.
Hands-on learning starts with modern equipment and first-rate shop facilities. Students in Engineering Design and Drafting Technology use cutting-edge software to create, animate and print in 3D. If you’re in Geomatics and Surveying Engineering Technology, you’ll be trained to use electronic survey instruments and satellite receivers. Power Engineering Technology students receive boiler firing time and training in the production of power that drives our various industries. Several of the school’s programs include an applied research project so you can put theory to the test in real-world situations.
The Canadian Technology Accreditation Board accredits many of our programs, giving graduates the freedom to work across Canada. After two years of employment in the field, Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads from these programs are eligible to apply for professional endorsement from the Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (SASTT). And our Power Engineering and Electronics Technician programs will help prepare you to write industry certification exams.
EARN WHILE YOU LEARN. Most of the school’s engineering technology programs feature paid co-operative education work terms. You’ll not only start building a professional résumé, but you’ll also have the chance to stand out from the crowd by developing job interviewing, interpersonal communications and leadership skills. When you return to your studies, you’ll have a strong understanding of the environment you are studying.

YOU’LL DEVELOP CAREER-READY SKILLS THAT YOU CAN USE IN THE WORKPLACE STARTING ON DAY 1.
APPRENTICESHIP Apprenticeship training is a multi-year earning-while-learning arrangement. Apprentices already have jobs in their desired field of work, and have signed a contract of apprenticeship with their employer and the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills through on-the-job training. The skills apprentices learn while working are supplemented with a required number of weeks of in-school technical training each year. Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, apprentices are eligible to write an
examination to become a certified journeyperson in their trade. Saskatchewan Polytechnic provides the in-school portion of apprenticeship training for 20 apprenticeable trades. All apprenticeship training is scheduled by SATCC. More information about apprenticeship training and training start dates may be obtained by contacting the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission at: saskapprenticeship.ca or SATCC 2140 Hamilton Street Regina SK S4P 2E3
