HOW TO APPLY WHEN SHOULD I APPLY? You can apply as soon as you are enrolled in the courses and at the grade level you require for admission. For instance, for a program where Grade 12 is an admission requirement, you may apply in September of your Grade 12 year. Most programs are first qualified, first admitted. Applicants who apply online can pay the application fee by Visa, Mastercard or Interac Online. You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO? Along with your completed application form and application fee, you will need to include: • An official transcript of your high-school marks. If you have already completed the high-school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; OR • A preliminary statement of high-school standing. If you are currently completing high-school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results – just complete the preliminary statement of high-school standing on the application form. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1. • All other (if any) documents required by the program. • High-demand programs have selection criteria in addition to regular academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are listed on our program web pages at saskpolytech.ca.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing program are accepted from October 1 until February 15. Visit sasknursingdegree.ca/admissions for details.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from Saskatchewan Polytechnic letting you know your start date, tuition fees and other costs (such as books, supplies and students’ association fees). If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship. In your acceptance letter, we will ask you to pay a $500 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply. If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you apply, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake.

WHAT IF I DO NOT MEET THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS? If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options: • If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through programs in our School of Academic and Career Education (see page 35) or through your high school or regional college. • You may qualify for special admission. Contact a Sask Polytech counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include: – use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that tests math and English skills, and/or – consideration of successfully completed courses and/or credentials. See saskpolytech.ca/specialadmissions for details.

• Y ou may be able to begin your studies as a part-time, unclassified student. Unclassified students are students who are registered in a Sask Polytech course but who are not currently admitted to a Sask Polytech program. Because English is the language of instruction and examination at Sask Polytech, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills to gain admission.

» For programs with math admission requirements, previous Saskatchewan math requirements are also accepted.

READY OR NOT? We can help. If you’re heading into a health care or technology program, prepare yourself by signing up for Math for Health Care Providers or Pre-Technology Math. Courses run mid- to late August. For more information, call 1-866-467-4278.

FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION TUITION, FEES AND EXPENSES Application fees are due with your application. Tuition and other assessed fees are due at the time of your registration. Check saskpolytech.ca for tuition and other assessed fee details.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Full-time students may receive financial assistance under the Canada and Saskatchewan Student Loans programs, including the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship for new Grade 12 graduates. Part-time students may receive assistance under the Canada Student Loans Program for Part-time Students.

SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC HAS MORE THAN 150 PROGRAMS TO CHOOSE FROM ranging from Practical Nursing to Professional Cooking.

AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Saskatchewan Polytechnic gives away $2 million in student awards each academic year. Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers student awards for every certificate and diploma program at every campus. You don’t have to be a brainiac to receive a student award. Not all student awards are based on marks – some are based on financial need or things like community or volunteer involvement. Some bursaries and scholarships are available to all Sask Polytech students, while others are for students attending a specific campus or program, or for education equity students. Once you’ve been accepted as a student, you can apply online for an award or scholarship between June 1 and July 15. Once you’re on campus, there are other scholarship opportunities available. Check the awards guide on the scholarships page on saskpolytech.ca.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING AND TRANSFER CREDIT SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC VALUES YOUR PRIOR LEARNING Save time and money as you reach your goals. Through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process, you can seek academic credit for the knowledge you’ve already gained through life and work experiences. CHILD CARE Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses in Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon offer child care centres. Each centre accommodates children of various ages in a safe and friendly environment. Parents may be eligible to receive a child care subsidy dependent on family income.

Counsellors provide admission guidance for the general public and confidential counselling services to Saskatchewan Polytechnic students. Counsellors offer guidance in many topics, including program selection and career development. They can help you address academic, financial and personal concerns. Also, counsellors assist with providing learning accommodations for students with disabilities. Throughout the academic year, Counselling in co-operation with Learning Services may offer workshops to help students succeed.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES Connecting Saskatchewan Polytechnic students, graduates and employers is our mission! Services include an annual career fair and an online job posting service.

FOOD SERVICES / STUDENT LOUNGES On-campus food choices at Saskatchewan Polytechnic include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options. Each campus offers food services with a variety of healthy food choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Vending machines with snacks and beverages are also available. Student lounge areas offer an opportunity for students to eat, relax, study and connect in a comfortable setting. The lounges feature free wi-fi.

HEALTH SERVICES Whether you’re feeling stressed out, need treatment or support, or require specific health information, as a Saskatchewan Polytechnic student you have

access to a registered nurse at any of our main campuses. A nurse practitioner is available at the Sask Polytech Regina campus. Services are confidential and available by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

If you live in Regina but go to school at Sask Polytech in Moose Jaw, you can purchase monthly bus passes with the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC).

HOUSING

RECREATION

If you are looking for an apartment, room and board or shared accommodation, housing registries are available at each campus and can be accessed from saskpolytech.ca. Students attending our Regina campus might also have the option of living in residence at the nearby University of Regina campus. Students attending our Prince Albert campus can apply for accommodations in our family housing complex.

Don’t sweat it only in the classroom – get active. Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers you great ways to get moving at any of our four campus locations through athletic clubs, intramurals and other recreational activities. Get involved in fitness classes and special interest clubs or take advantage of fitness assessments and programs. Facilities and recreation offerings vary by campus.

LEARNING SERVICES

STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS

Learning Services provides individual attention to help you succeed. You can refresh your academic skills, get help with basic mathematics, learn how to communicate more effectively and develop stronger writing skills. Also, an online writing lab (OWL) is available if you need help with written assignments.

Energetic students’ associations represent student interests to Saskatchewan Polytechnic administration and promote cultural, social, educational and recreational programs for members. All students enrolled in Sask Polytech programs and courses automatically are members of their home campus students’ association. Minimal membership fees help fund services such as: • accident insurance • dental and health plans • family-oriented activities • intramural activities • leadership scholarship awards • résumé service • social events • student advocacy and representation • student agenda/handbook • student discount cards • subsidies to plan and implement activities • used book kiosks • vending machines and arcade games Students’ association offerings vary by campus.

LIBRARIES The libraries at Saskatchewan Polytechnic connect you with the learning resources you need and are committed to providing services to all students from all backgrounds, whether on campus, online or at a distance. In the library, you can borrow books, journals, magazines and DVDs, as well as access photocopiers, computers, study spaces, electronic media and more. Through the online Sask Polytech library you can access your library account, search the catalogue for e-books, e-journals and streaming videos, as well as browse information about library services. Adaptive technologies and formats for students with learning and perceptual disabilities are also available.

LOCKERS Lockers are available on campus for storing books, educational supplies and clothing.

PARKING AND TRANSIT Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses are served by public transit. Paid parking is available at all campuses for students and visitors. Paid parking is in effect between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., seven days a week. Anyone without a valid hang tag will need to purchase a pay and display ticket and have it prominently displayed. Parking cards are available for purchase from the Bookstores.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ABORIGINAL SERVICES Celebrate and include your culture, histories and systems of knowledge in your learning at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. More Aboriginal students obtain education and skills training at Sask Polytech than at any other Saskatchewan post-secondary institution. Saskatchewan Polytechnic supports you in your educational journey – from finding housing and child care to providing a welcoming environment on campus. Each Sask Polytech campus is home to an Aboriginal activity centre. The centres host culturally affirming events for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and employees. Saskatchewan Polytechnic welcomes international students to either learn in Saskatchewan or study Sask Polytech programs abroad. International graduates are prepared either to begin working in their home country or in Canada with the PostGraduation Work Permit Program, or to transfer to a university to complete their degree. Saskatchewan Polytechnic places heavy emphasis on providing hands-on training, often incorporating training into workplace settings.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT The language of instruction at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is English. If your first or primary language is not English, you will need to provide evidence of your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. For students to be successful in a Sask Polytech program, these skills are required. To qualify, students must have obtained either an IELTS academic test of at least 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.0 in each component or a TOEFL 81 with a minimum of 19 in each component. SCHOOLS MODEL DEFINED

The Schools Model is a way to organize full-credit academic programs. It is a common practice in post-secondary education, especially among polytechnics in Canada. By grouping similar programs into schools, students will have learning opportunities with evolving interdisciplinary and interprofessional fields of study, and industry will more clearly understand our programming. In the Saskatchewan Polytechnic model, programs have been organized into eight schools in the economic sector and four schools in the public service sector.

SCHOOL OF

ANIMAL AND BIOSCIENCES Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s two Animal and BioSciences programs can take you in so many directions. As a BioScience Technology grad, you can choose to work in agricultural or medical research, animal or plant sciences, quality control, micro- and molecular biology or environmental science. As a Veterinary Technology grad, you can put your skills and love of animals to work at a farm, zoo, government agency or veterinary clinic, or in research, education or sales. AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES. You’ll get plenty of hands-on training on- and off-campus. BioScience Technology students participate in a four-week industry practicum, while Vet Tech students spend one practicum in a small-animal veterinary practice and another in a mixed- or large-animal practice or research facility.

ENRICHED EDUCATION. BioScience Technology students may have the opportunity to carry out research in Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s BioScience Applied Research Centre, which works with industry partners in the development of innovative new products and technologies. Students in the Veterinary Technology program complete their final semester at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine, working with experienced veterinary technologists and leading veterinary specialists.

EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS. Veterinary Technology grads are eligible to write an exam to become Registered Veterinary Technologies, which qualifies them to work across Canada as well as the United States. Graduates of both programs can use their diploma as a stepping stone to university degree programs.

HEALTH SCIENCES Canada’s complex health care system, aging population and evolving medical technologies all add up to a growing demand for skilled health care workers. Health careers demand accuracy, attention to detail, manual dexterity, self-motivation, organizational skills and empathy. Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads are answering that call. Some work as medical lab technologists, dental hygienists, paramedics or continuing care assistants. Others immerse themselves in addictions counselling, therapeutic recreation programming or health information management. The School of Health Sciences offers a host of career options from which to choose. AWESOME PRACTICUMS.

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY.

You’ll boost your confidence and confirm skill competence through significant hands-on training. For example, Medical Radiologic Technology students have several months of clinical experience in a hospital setting, while Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students gain experience working with a licensed dental team in our campus dental clinic.

There’s an application window for our high-demand programs. Apply between October 1 and February 15 each year for Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Radiologic Technology programs. PAID EDUCATION.

Many of our Health Sciences grads write industry certification exams. In addition, Cytotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Radiologic Technology programs let you transfer into university degree programs.

Saskatcheawn Polytechnic’s Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Radiologic Technology programs qualify for the Canadian Forces (CF) Paid Education program. Once you’re enrolled in the CF, the forces will pay for your training. In return, you commit to serve in the forces for a set period after graduation.

Employment in both sectors is hopping, and a Saskatchewan Polytechnic diploma or certificate is proof positive that you have both the practical training and knowledge you’ll need to succeed. Our Hospitality and Tourism programs will prepare you to work in an array of venues, including hotels, restaurants, resorts, schools, hospitals, recreation complexes and remote catering facilities, or in a business of your own. We’re known nationally for our top-quality hospitality programs. Our Professional Cooking program is the most recognized culinary training program in Saskatchewan. We’ve built on that success and recently started offering the only two-year culinary education program in the province.

Food and Nutrition Management and Hotel and Restaurant Management programs share a number of courses, making it possible to complete both diplomas in less than four years. If further study is in your future, both programs let you transfer credits into university degree programs.

Recreation and Tourism Management students reinforce what they learn in the classroom at fall and winter camps, while students in the Food and Nutrition Management program have a six-week practicum in their diploma year. NURSING Nursing is a compelling career choice: fulfilling work, great job prospects, a portable skill set. You can choose to work in a hospital, community health centre, outpatient clinic or physician’s office, or with home care. Or you may prefer to specialize in health promotion, administration or research. Saskatchewan Polytechnic has been educating nurses for more than 47 years. With our nursing programs, we’re preparing a new generation of nurses to meet the realities of modern health care delivery. FACE TIME WITH FACULTY. Small class sizes afford plenty of one-to-one interaction with faculty. These experienced nurses and health care practitioners go beyond textbooks to help you develop essential skills such as critical thinking, communicating and caring.

PREPARE FOR REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS. Prior to clinical practice placements, you’ll build your confidence in simulation learning centres complete with high-tech mannequins, hospital and assessment rooms, video cameras and control rooms.

EARN A DEGREE. The Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is offered jointly by Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina and can be completed in three or four years. The Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing Degree Completion program gives grads of Sask Polytech’s Psychiatric Nursing diploma program the opportunity to earn a psychiatric nursing degree in two years. And starting in the fall of 2014, Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina will welcome the first intake of students into the Collaborative Nurse Practitioner Program, which leads to the Master’s of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) degree.

APPRENTICESHIP Apprenticeship training is a multi-year earning-while-learning arrangement. Apprentices already have jobs in their desired field of work, and have signed a contract of apprenticeship with their employer and the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills through on-the-job training. The skills apprentices learn while working are supplemented with a required number of weeks of in-school technical training each year. Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, apprentices are eligible to write an

examination to become a certified journeyperson in their trade. Saskatchewan Polytechnic provides the in-school portion of apprenticeship training for 20 apprenticeable trades. All apprenticeship training is scheduled by SATCC. Earn the equivalent of a high-school diploma in the Adult 12 program. If you already have the skills and knowledge of a Canadian highschool graduate but need the documentation to prove it, we offer a program that prepares you to take the GED® tests. Build basic academic and life skills in Adult 10 and literacy programs.

ADULT LITERACY / LEARNING CENTRES. Drop by one of our three centres. Staff can give you individual

assistance with reading, writing and math, as well as help you improve your computer and job-search skills.

ASSESSMENT AND TESTING. You may need to show that you can communicate in English for admission to post-secondary studies or for employment purposes. We offer several English proficiency tests on campus including IELTS, CLBA and CELPIP®, as well as GED® tests.

EMPLOYMENT READINESS. Prepare for the world of work through in-class and on-the-job
