From the Editor This is the inaugural edition of SA Skye Enthusiast and this little seedling of an idea will help to record the history of the Skye Terrier as the breed is re-established in this country. Wherever possible we will try to bring you historical information from pre-1989 which is approximately when the last litter of Skye Terriers was whelped in SA by the McCanns. Of course this information is not readily available on the internet, since the internet only came much later. As the Skye population in
South Africa is currently very small, this publication will initially be produced biannually. This first edition includes reviews and information from 2010 and 2011. As a graduate of journalism and a master of corporate publishing, I am doing this as a labour of love so that for future generations, information about the Skye Terrier in South Africa is readily available and for those who become Skye Enthusiasts, this will provide a wealth of information and history on bloodlines and show results.
As a first endeavour of its kind, I expect this to be filled with trial and obstacle, but in my life, I have learnt that it is these two things which cause you to grow as an individual, whether personally, or as a breeder and exhibitor. Who knows, perhaps when we have a breed entry of 30 Skyes I could make some money out of this! I hope you enjoy this first edition.

CH Buckwheater’s Curry Favour at Ailsabute EEVA Currently the No 1 Skye Terrier in SA—All Systems. This girl is Skye royalty, coming from the best of Olivia lines and a good strong bitch line of correct fronts and heads of perfection. Her grandfathers have done well also, with Simo being one of the most outstanding Skyes in recent history. MBIS MBISS C.I.B Multi Ch Olivia Spirit of American Idol “Simo” - is world renowned in the Skye world (and # 4 All-breeds in Finland in 2011) with three world winner titles and numerous Nordic and Finnish winners titles. His son Aidan, Eeva's father takes strongly after Simo; and Aidan was Junior World Winner in 2009. There is no fuss involved in setting this girl up, she is the easiest - straight and correct in front, with an elegant neck and beautiful angulation in the rear. And that level top line and fluid movement draws more than its fair share of positive comments. Coming from one of the best performing Skye litters in Europe currently, with all littermates having CAC or CACIB, she is the first Buckwheaters-bred BIS winner. Finishing # 1 Skye Terrier two years in a row (AnimalTalk 100, 2010/2011, with eight group scores still to be added) and #1 on Showdogs BOB Breed Leaderboard, she is a dream come true. Thank you to those breeders who came before me, whose work I salute and admire in bringing this rare and wonderful breed to new strengths in the European and US show rings. I aim to do the same down in the far reaches of Africa. Eeva is the first Skye Terrier in South Africa to win an all breeds Best in Show (TKC FCI), and adds to this a
BISS and BPISS which were achieved on the same day, at just eight months of age, under Desi Murphy - a Terrier Specialist who was familiar with Walter Goodman's top winning Skyes in the USA. I believe this girl will go from strength to strength; her grandmother Dixy is still winning BIS from the veterans class at 11,5 years young! We look forward to welcoming Eeva's beau, bred from top American and German lines, this year, and next year, the first SA-bred Skye litter in 22 years. This all-cream litter will carry some of the topwinning lines from around the world. With only limited showing in her first year, this has been her first full year of showing. As the first Skye Terrier in SA in many years, I was under no disillusion that it was going to be a long haul with a lot of hard work to put the breed on the map, but the sublime and supremely elegant Eeva makes it all worthwhile. Thank you to all the judges, both local and international, who have noted and recognised the exquisite quality of this girl. And to all the exhibitors and fans around the ring, thank you for the support and positive encouragement you've offered along the way. I can think of many who deserve a special personal thankyou but that would take up too much space! Thus far, Eeva has earned 36 x CCs and 2 x CACIBs Exc, 32 x BOB, 8 x RBOB. 21 x Group places or wins, 10 x Best Puppy, 1 x BPISS, 1 x BJIG and 1 x RBJIS, 1 x RBISS, 1 x BISS and 1 x BIS, with the majority of these wins in 2011.

Paris, France— In July 2011 Lorraine van Schalkwyk travelled to Paris to attend the World Dog Show. On Friday, July 8, was the World Winners Show, at which Simo—Olivia Spirit of American Idol—was for the third time overall World Winner in the Skye Terrier breed. Previously he won the title in 2008 and 2009. Says Hanna Granlund, coowner and devoted mum to Simo: “Simo does not really need to win anything more. He has broken every record for a Skye in Finland, and I firmly believe that when he was born the mould was broken, there will never be another Skye that can do what he has done.” Finland’s premier show is Finnish Winner Show held annually in Helsinki. It is the highlight of the show calendar for many Scandavian exhibitors. Simo won BIS in the Winner Show 2008, out of a staggering 8500 entries and was BIS-4 in Winner Show 2010. He has
been BOB at this show four times 06-08-09-10. No other Skye has ever won BIS in the Winner Show and he is the only Skye that has placed twice in the Winner Show BIS. In addition he has finished on in the top five of Finland’s Show Dog of the Year for All Breeds. He finished # 2 in 2009, # 4 in 2010 and this year he finished # 4. Says Hanna: “He is the only Skye in this country ever to make it into the Top Five All Breeds, and he's been there three years in a row! In the rankings in 2009 he was also # 1 Terrier, in 2010 # 2 Terrier and I think he will be # 1 Terrier also in 2011 when the final results are announced!” Simo has been BOB 78 times. In addition, he has won the Terrier Group 23 times. “We always have all Terrier breeds represented in the Group finals. Simo has also won the Terrier Specialty in a
field of 800 Terriers, finishing Best in Show-1 in 2008 & BIS2 in 2010.” Simo also has 25 other Group placements (II-IV), five Best in Shows, nine BIS-2, three BIS-3, four BIS-4 and 46 CACIBs. He also has two RCCs from Crufts 09-11. “It took Olga 60 years to breed a dog like Simo, he is almost unreal,” says Hanna. So what will Simo do when his day for retirement come around? “I am sure Simo will really appreciate it, because he does not like car rides, aeroplanes or dog shows. He loves his toys and his armchair!” We can imagine the just reward for this amazing dog, curled up in his chair everyday with his toys… It will certainly be well deserved!

The Bookshelf Skye Terrier by Muriel P. Lee is a superb basic introduction to the breed and should be on every Skye Terrier pet owner’s bookshelf. It has an adequate amount of history, starting as early as the 19th century and including passages on such luminaries of the breed as Mrs WJ Hughes, Lady Marcia Miles
and later breed personalities like the flamboyant Mrs Marion Crooks. The book includes all you need to know about the care and training of Skye Terriers and for aspirant judges of the breed, there is a reasonable discussion of the breed standard with illustrations of the common faults such as a dip
behind the shoulders, soft topline and rear high. For serious and knowledgeable fanciers the title is a bit light on illustrations of some of the top winners in history. Nevertheless a bookshelf staple.
