kunshan eastern healthcare center, china, competition 1.st price

conclusion 总结 in our proposal the Kunshan eastern healthcare center has been designed to be at the same time a beautiful and inviting building complex and at the same time built in a very cost efficient and effective way. The smart grid of 8.1 m x 8.1 m gives a technical advantage and is yet very easy to construct with normal concrete columns, beams and slabs. The clearly orientating “spine” and efficiently placed function reduce the internal traffic; also the outside traffic has been designed to not cross between different uses. The green pattern of green terraces, both covered and not covered and also the possibility to make green roof surfaces, give a soothing atmosphere and at the same time they reduce the speed of the surface water during heavy rains. also the large amount of green garden in different patterns give the patients both physical and spiritual ease, helping them to recover in a balanced way. Balance, efficiency and ecology are the key words for our design.

In the future Otaniemi will play the key role as a main campus of Aalto University. Teaching and reasearching goes hand in hand offering the latest knowledge and know-how to future makers in an atmosphere of awareness and enthousiasm. New Aalto learning center will presents itself as a stage for meeting, studying, working together, eating and living around the clock. Flexibility, ease of change and modification, quick “plug- in” possibilities and a variety of changeable lounges are key figures. It’s a place of interaction and knowledge, where anyone can seek for reliable information – a node that connects and distributes people and inspiration. The spaces consist of library facilities, common working areas, seminar rooms, workshops and recreational areas, cafés and other spaces required for combining social events, education and library services. The new building is a centre for communication and spreading information but also a boot of identity of whole Aalto University. The main concept for Aalto Learning Centre was polarized focusing to closed daytime use and open 24/7-use. Different functions represent various atmospheres and connections but learning centre offers spaces for flow of life from silent spaces to open encounters without the limit. The main entrance is located to face most vivid connection point near metro station. Another important entrance is serving the stream of the people coming from main building of Aalto university designed by Alvar Aalto. Stepping to the high main lobby one can glance at the fresh works exhibited by students, nip to the sip of tea flavours in the fresh student cafe or take a look at newest products designed by students in the university protoshop. Even the open show heralded in the glass terrarium can be followed from the lobby. Interactive wall shows current happenings, job opportunities and spaces available for silent work. Variations of workspaces allows one to go with the flow of learning by meeting friends, teamworking, sheltering to study nests outside of disturbance of noise and visual motion. Laboratories courage to explore and move to multidisciplinary fields aiming at developing innovative study environment where ideas can be tested. Healthy mind needs healthy body. Aalto staff and students get great opportunity to spin their tireness to the winds on the top floor gym with the seaview to gulf of Laajalahti. A sweaty hour is rewarded with sweet steam of timber sauna. You can feel the finnish spirit whispering when water is splashed to the heated stones.

telässä korttelirakenne avautuu rantapuistoon ja tontteja rajaavalle kevyen liikenteen kulkureitille täydeltä laidaltaan. Yhteispihan viljelysmaat, oleskelualueet ja luonnontilaiset niityt liittyvät luontevasti kaikkien orijärveläisten yhteiseen olohuoneeseen. Rannalta katsottuna korttelin sylimäiset talomassat muodostavat suojaisan kehyksen puiston yli avautuville pitkille näkymille. Kontrastina alueen niitty ja metsämaisemalle puistoa kiertää juoksurata jonka ideaalina päällysteenä on urheiluareenoilta tuttu mondo-kumipinnoite. Pirteän punainen, kimmoisa alusta kirvoittaa kaikenikäisiä kokeilemaan kehon ja mielikuvituksen rajoja. Muita aktivoivia elementtejä puistossa on vaihteleviin maastonmuotoihin sovitettu pienoismonilajikenttä, sekä leirinuotiopaikka. Leikkipuistovarusteet rakennetaan puistossa edullisista kierrätys- ja luonnonmateriaaleista asuntojen yhteispihan tavoin.

Alternative to suburb

Contemporary contexts are temporary. We stay in our work, hobbies, even marriage for a shorter time than we used to. This gives us the possibility and the burden of constantly reinventing and ourselves.

Our identity forms in a social context And leaves us very fragile to sudden unwanted changes in our lives: decease, divorce, loss of job. Who remembers who we were, when we are in a crises? Excluded from where we found our identity?

Too many are less. It takes a village to raise a child. A network of long lasting relations is attractive.

The Leisure takes space from working, and suburbs will have more and more to say what comes to the population compared to downtown. The transport is important factor because the people in the suburbs use less bicycle than people in towntown and usage of cars is an opposite. How we will deal with the climate change issues when suburbs are more and more the place to live for average population. The Scandinavian Cities should create a sustainable and a competitive region appealing conditions for habitation, education, research and culture - a region of superior quality of life.

“Copenhagen leaves all the other cities behind because of its development in architecture, design and gourmet food. The city’s famous gastronomy, bicycle culture, city’s public transportation, design and human scale of the public spaces including the green ones, the harbour baths, and the diverse free town of Christiania are all examples of the unique quality of life in Copenhagen. Not least Copenhagen manages to integrate design in everyday life to make life easy and friction-free for residents and visitors. One of them is its undeniably seamless urban planning, paving the way for the mobility, and ultimately, the happiness of its residents. [...] Denmark’s capital is, put simply, designed for life. ” (Visit Copenhagen.com)

That sounds so great that we wanted to understand more. Three studygroups explored the chronological history of great Copenhagen in between the years 1800 and 2010 considering sustainability & lifestyles, city & quality of life and economy & politics. We estimated how the values of suburbs, leisure, city life, working, military has changed during two hundred years. The guiding statistics were about mortalityrate, birthrate, houses built, & of 65+ ‘city‘, students - male / female, population ‘city‘, bicyclelane (km), pedestrian area (m2), life expectancy, income for food, income for housing, corrected GDP, population total, cars / 1000 person, car/bike usage (outskirts / downtown).

The first 18 female police officers 1978

There is something special in the Scandinavian cities what comes to the quality of life. The appreciated global magazine Monocle has ranked Copenhagen no. 1 among “The World’s 25 Top Cities for Quality of life”.

Existing Green 2010 Municipal Initiatives New Green Strategy

The scandinavian cities should fight against climate change like every other city in the world. The chanllenge will be how to address the fight against the right target. We have to recognise the battle on a field between the various competing characters of the city – for example between old and new, public and private, top-down and bottom up, we have to be able to find the hotspot where the solution would culminate and reach the climate goal. In the case of Copenhagen finding the battlefield was real challenge. We researched the urban battle from a point of view of the different climatic problems like a lack of productive biodiverse space. Our Battle is derived from the fact that all modern cities today face a challenge of achieving global and national climate goals whilst still increasing density and growth. The four driving fources are connectivity, use and tranformation of hard surfaces, improving existing green and both use design of the public property. Connectivity is crucial for biodiversity. Green corridors allows species migration. By minimizing edge-effects between green areas we will increase the biodiversity. It’s important to enable expansion of green mass and urban structures simultaneously. Improving the homogenious existing vegetation by biodiversity we lift the experience value of the environment. Whenever the city spends money it should increase the vegetation in order to enrich the public environment becoming a trademark for Copenhagen. The potential of planning and design strategies would be more easily found when exploring the city from a different point of view where we as an architects try to find the alternative starting points of an urban living and problems engaging with the spatial, material, atmospheric, and programmatic; as well as the social, collective, organizational, political and economic realms.

27 OULU UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

WOODEN BLOCK OF FLATS

20 05 2009

TO KRUUNUVUORENRANTA

SASSI HEISKANEN

BACHELOR’S THESIS WORK

Area of urban planning is situated in the south-western part of Laajasalo region in Helsinki on the site of old oil harbour soon going out of use. In the future modern seaside district of Kruunuvuorenranta will stand on this site by Helsinki municipality. I aimed to create ecological residential district which enables a communal and organic but still urban way of living. Regional design was specified through the block planning and designing the details of a block of flat. This wooden residential building meets the requirements of energy regulations for the year 2010. A designing project was integrated with both the city planning course of Planning and Urban Design Laboratory, housing design course of Contemporary Architecture Laboratory, design of apartment blocks course of Building Performance and Construction laboratory, heating, plumbing and air conditioning course, and concrete and steel structures course.

VIEW TO COURTYARD

30

In my dreams there are no cars but a view of wild nature with neighbours, rustic facades and a pure life from my own window. I wanted to design urban environment emphasizing the presence of sea and greenness of living vegetations.

I aimed to object to Finnish way of constructing light coloured anonymous concrete blocks of flats side by side only asphalt field between them. Natural materials with a small ecological footprint, energy efficient structures, self-sufficiency in food management, slick and comprehensive public transport and places for the elderly and children to meet each others; there are just a few to mention what comes to sustainable

living.

If we still build we can’t afford to ignore the future. VIEW FROM THE SEA

THE FLOOR PLAN In these rushing days there is a need for silence and rest. One has to experience intuitionally something unexpected to get rid of every day thoughts and worries. An islet with changing sand dunes formed by water movements offers an excellent chance to get lost in a world of wind, water and moment going by. An islet chapel is formed by seven pieces of space on the crossroads of the three waterways on open sea bay in front of Oulu town silhouette. Weird rock like blocks invites visitors to go shelter ashore and open their senses for the nature. In the summer time they can row by boat and in the winter walk on ice to the islet. Two pieces towards the sea are dedicated for silence, one piece between them as a pergola for enjoying fresh air and sounds. Four pieces are needed for an entrance, a kitchen, a cloakroom, an office and the rest room of staff. Untreated wood and corten steal blend into the mood of nature. Club-rushes around the islet whispers by wind setting one’s mind at rest.

TEACHERS’ CLUB QUARTER If we can learn something from the history of Finnish urban development it’s to appreciate and conserve the old property with identity and unique spirit of time. When we want to achieve ambitious climate goals by architecture is one main target to reuse existing building stock and structures in an intelligent and a future-friendly way.

IMPROVEMENT

PLAN OF SMALL PUBLIC BUILDING

To the south from Oulu downtown lies old residential quarter in need of new kind of life. One residential building is in relatively good shape after small service operation but another in worse condition has gone through renovation in the 1970’s in which the interior lost it’s original spirit of time and whole building suffered from defective service- and alteration work. In this case purpose of use has gone out of date and there’s lack of small scale semi-public gathering place in the neighbourhoods. The new library cafe offers flexible space for small commercial bussinesses and for rental festivitial use. The main goal was to gain timeless, unrestricted and unique solution respecting the beautiful old frame and the time of 1920’s with it’s special features.

The modest but visible detail to create a playful character was to use authentiquely patterned Finnish wallpapers in order to illustrate poetic national naturescape fantasy on the walls in a sophisticated way. Proposed plan aims at kicking off the public life of the building and the cafe culture of the side streets which offers moment of experience also for the smallest of the families. The detailing of the whole is precisely considered to preserve the piece of history but giving sensual and long-lasting solution for future generations.

43 The site is a small unexploited island next to the cosiest shore line of Oulu market place and downtown. The location suits perfectly for experiment of new townhouse types. This three-storey townhouse is part of linked single-family houses where each individually designed unit has the area sized 8m x 15m. A sea view to the north gives enjoyable atmosphere for cooking, relaxing and working in common rooms. Every residential unit offers space for small scale bussinesses. The wintergarden gives opportunity for self-sustainable urban gardening or semi-exterior space for relaxing. Longitude views through the building increasing light and spacial atmosphere. The most dominant element in the centre of the house is diagonally positioned massive wooden stair which reflects the longitude division and views in every floor.

The townhouse stair is the heart of the house guiding the inhabitants between the floors of vertically formed three-storey single-family house. A lightweight glass railing lets the light move freely in the space and emphasize the warm wooden steps as the strongest structural element of the stairs. Detailing aims at purifying the form of the stairs in order to hide attaching points and carrying frame.

53 SUBURB DETACHED HOUSES SPRING

2008

NeighboUrhood Design The traditional dream of the Finn to get the own house in the nature far from social communication and neighbours is luckily critiziced and densifying considered as a future direction. A small suburbian district is located between the Oulu university hospital, telecommunication complex of Nokia, a highway and an old mental asylum. The area sized 20 000 - 30 000 m2 is filled with detached houses which varys randomly with exterior forming human scale semi-public spaces between the buildings positioned like a string of pearls..
