STRATEGY 2018-2023
The Satellite Applications Catapult is an organisation with a singular mission – to innovate for a better world, empowered by satellites. We are an independent innovation and technology company, created by Innovate UK to drive economic growth through the exploitation of space. We work with businesses of all sizes to realise their potential from space infrastructure and its applications. The world is in the early stages of a new digital revolution, with space technology increasingly at its heart. Satellites are critical infrastructure, as fundamental to the global economy as the energy grid or internet, and space is a UK success story. In 2016, it contributed £13.7bn to our economy, and working with the wider UK space community and the UK Space Agency we will help grow this to £40bn by 2030. Our new strategy document sets out our organisation’s vision to 2023. It summarises the state of the market and our strategic objectives, and how we will break down the barriers to the growth of the sector. It will also become the yardstick by which we are measured. INTRODUCTION TO SPACE “SPACE IS A UK SUCCESS STORY” Since 2000, coordinated industry and government actions have trebled the size of the sector. With 6% annual growth and one third of our outputs exported, space now supports 14% of UK GDP - some £250bn. The sector boasts productivity at 2.7 times the national average and is recognised as a vital element of UK economic growth. That growth ambition is to create a sector worth £40bn by 2030. The Satellite Applications Catapult is at the heart of this: WORKED IN

BARRIERS TO GROWTH Our assessment of the current market and how we are overcoming the barriers to growth of the industry
GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE ACCESS TO R&D THERE IS LACK OF UPTAKE OF EO DATA DUE TO CHALLENGES OF EASE OF USE We will build on our existing facilities to deliver a comprehensive geospatial innovation environment, integrating AI and machine learning, to support the use of Earth Observation data for commercial users and government to deliver powerful new information services
We will establish the Westcott 5G Step-Out Centre to engage the market in the development of new products and services ready for commercial deployment in 2020 We will ensure satellite is integral to ‘beyond 5G’ communication standards We will build strategic relationships with industry leaders and academia, across Europe (including ESA) and worldwide to build international collaborative research
ENERGISING THE MARKET ABSENCE OF EARLY ADOPTERS
UBIQUITOUS CONNECTIVITY ACCESS TO R&D INTEGRATION OF TERRESTRIAL AND SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS DOES NOT HAPPEN AS STANDARD DUE TO A LACK OF ADEQUATE SYSTEMS AND STANDARDS
THERE IS A NEED TO OVERCOME LACK OF KNOWLEDGE AND MISCONCEPTIONS We will deliver at least four market programmes to connect the satellite applications sector with end-users We will deliver three large-scale transformative, market-led initiatives that have global applicability, such as the Transport for Innovation Programme – North West which is forecast to deliver £2bn in economic growth and 20,000 high value jobs

OUR STRATEGIC VISION I ENERGISE I EMPOWER I ENABLE Our strategy is to accelerate the growth of the UK Satellite Applications sector, by focusing on three themes across targeted markets:
ENERGISING THE MARKET
EMPOWERING TECHNOLOGY
ENABLING BUSINESS
Through our market programmes we unlock latent customer demand, open new markets, and drive exports by raising awareness, changing preconceptions and showcasing the power of space derived services.
Through our technology programme we help companies advance their products to be closer to market programme opportunities by identifying the barriers to entry such as regulation, incumbents, or simple accessibility.
We connect business of all sizes with the resources and facilities they need to launch and grow, opening new routes to market and attracting inward investment. We provide targeted business support and user-centred design expertise alongside signposting to finance.

OUR STRATEGIC VISION
ENERGISE
INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT
SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Intelligent Transport is key for the future of connectivity through connected vehicles and is high value for positioning and location based services.
Sustainable living poses challenges at scale and provides strong use cases for both geospatial innovation and connectivity in areas not often addressed by existing industry, but which will drive significant economic value by 2030.
Applications include environmental monitoring platforms, agriculture, mining and supporting sustainable development goals.
BLUE ECONOMY
GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Blue economy is an excellent first adopter market for space as there are usually few alternatives to satellite solutions in an area that covers 2/3 of the globe.
Government services has key early use cases for both ubiquitous connectivity and geospatial systems.
Applications include ocean surveillance (illegal fishing, plastics, piracy), coastal monitoring and smart ports.
08
Applications include major public sector innovation programmes, connected vehicles, smart antennae, freight and logistics.
