The Pucci story is a modern epic with its roots in renaissance Italy: the brand’s founder, the Marchese Emilio Pucci di Barsento, was a charismatic aristocrat whose lineage extends back to the 14th century. lectric, Pet Shop Boys’ first LP on their own record label, sees Stuart Price aiding Messrs Tennant and Lowe in a hugely enjoyable record aimed at the dancefloor. Luke Turner gives a review on a few tracks Axis, Aha! Here we go! Wooooooooooo! Pet Shop Boys open their 12th album - and first self-released record - with a track that screams ‘yes! Freedom! Triumph! Techno! Men in hats! No not those men in hats, with their flaccid faux-sophistication and marketing blitzkrieg, but this charming pair who’ve flogged upwards of 70 million albums and redefined the connections between art and pop. Electric is their first album after leaving Parlophone to set up their own label x2 via Kobalt, and has Stuart Price on production duties. In a track that’s largely an instrumental banger (complete with amazing plastic trumpet tooting fanfares), save for repetitions of “electric avenue” and some lost wailing, the gritty sense of purpose and reinvigoration is palpable in brittle beats and tough synths that gurgle and grind. Anyone who’s seen Pet Shop Boys live will know that half the joy is in their architecturally brilliant stage sets, and it’ll be fascinating to see what they do to accompany this. Something between Metropolis and the place where everyone goes to get spangled on Soma and listen to the horns in Brave New World would suffice here. Bolshy, A number that whisks together blueeyed synth, funk and piano house, ‘Bolshy’ is the first of many pop corkers on Electricity. Neil Tennant’s vocal line “bolshy bolshy bolshy bolshy / where your heart leads I will go” glides across the surface like a yacht against a pristine tropical horizon, before synthetic handclaps gradually lead to an unexpected, tweaky build and drop at 4:40. Instead of using that as the excuse to do something daft and over-ooof the pudding, ‘Bolshy’ continues with its sun-dappled panache. This is Pet Shop Boys at their sexiest, most sun-kissed, a killer track. No wonder they’re booked for Sonar. Fluorescent, A moody, murky number, and one that starts with a solid, techno-inspired boom and whizz, with vinyl crackle too and what sounds like p.

a sexual gasp chopped out and used as a rhythm. The whole thing sounds really analogue. This is shaping up to be the most dancefloor-oriented Pet Shop Boys album in years, and ‘Fluorescent’ in particular might lend itself to remixes, with a great street-lights-twinkling refrain now and then, and Tennant’s voice set low in the mix amid all the analogue whirling and fizzing. A classic Pet Shop Boys exploration of nocturnal decadence - “at midnight / it’s time for business... every scandal has its price”. The Last To Die, Pet Shop Boys take the hoary bluster of Bruce Springsteen’s track (as featured on his 2007 LP Magic) and make a slab of politicised doof-pop. ‘The Last To Die’ has tinkling piano, Tennant sounding somewhat mournful before the 4/4 kicks in. The main chorus line (“who’ll be the last to die for our mistakes / whose blood will spill / whose heart will break”) is one of the album’s finest earworms, and is followed by some top “la la la-ing” (remember that ‘guitarist wanted’ advert the nascent Suede placed in Melody Maker which cited PSB as an influence, and you’ll be on the way). Once again, there’s judicious use of those Pet Shop Male Voice Choir vocals in the background. It’s one of the oddest cover versions you’ll hear all year. Vocal, And so Electric comes to an end at nine tracks with what might seem to be Pet Shop Boys’ paean to raving: “I like the people / This is my kind of music / They play it all night long... everything about tonight feels right and so young...” It then proceeds with clipping snare rhythms, Balearic synths, and fairly straightforward club rhythms. There’s also a vocoder vocal in there somewhere, but it’s mangled to all hell, as if the Daft Punk robots had fallen into an underwater blade in an ill-advised Bond cameo. With no ballads and fairly economical in length, Electric is a fierce, energetic record that sees Tennant, Lowe and Price revisit their long-standing love of club culture, including rather unexpected forays into its brasher, Transatlantic version. ‘Boys’ done good. ~ Luke Turner PetShopBoys.co.uk

commissioned with the house plans for a Belgian film producer. The Belgian film producer asked Eustache to draw up the plans for several houses on a plot of land that the film producer had bought in Marrakesh, Morocco. Eustache had regularly visited Morocco over the years; ‘’right from my first trip I was bewitched by that country and the three projects studied to date are certainly fed, to varying degrees, by all the images and impressions gathered that I have during over the course of me trips,’’ says Eustache. The main difficulties faced, were the identification of the program on behalf of the client. What started off as a three house project on the plot of land gradually decreased to the smallest of these three houses, the aim of which was to preserve the natural surrounding terrain. With a sustainable architectural design, and volumes where the modestly proportioned building visually occupies the entire plot, it establishes a close dialogue with the land, the vegetation and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon. The 171.96 square meter house on 2.5 hectares is relatively small proportionwise; therefore the architect Guilhem Eustache had to create a dynamic volume so as to balance things out and create a dynamic symmetry. The light of Marrakech only assisted in intensifying the volumes with the play of light and shadow and symmetrically blends the volumes into the large plot. The total floor area occupied by the residence, the guard house, the pool house and the garage totals 240 square meters in this 2.5 hectares plot; the arrangements of the volumes therefore permit avoiding the floating effect in this ‘empty space’. Once you pass through the entrance gate and into the grounds of the private Fobe residence, you are surprisingly welcomed to a ‘strange’ world for local Morocco. On the right side upon entering, you come across the Guard house - two mixed cubes close to a totem fireplace which face the double garage doors studded with small openings along their whole length. These small, yet simple elements create an eloquent bareness leading the eye to focus towards the house itself.

materials is positioned adjacent to a milieu of two parallel concrete walls which provide for visual protection to the west as well as creating a sound barrier. Local materials (clay, tadelack, Pierre de Ourika) and techniques have been applied despite the architectural differentiation from local architecture. The Fobe residence has preserved the wildness of the land despite the fact that over 500 trees have been planted. A vertiginous staircase runs up between the two walls to the roof terrace opposite the extravagant scenery of the Atlas Mountains, a view which is fogfree and highly appreciated during the spring time as well as during the winter when the magnificent mountains are covered in snow. With its lofty volumes, hefty heights, fluid internal divisions, the play of light and the shade in the surroundings, this house flows through the landscape and melts into it amidst olive, palm, eucalyptus, mimosa and fruit trees. The main residence undulates its floor plan on the ground level which includes two large master bedrooms with built in bathrooms, and walk in closets, a spacious kitchen with a large food storage room, a WC, and two large spaces used as living room and dining room. Paradoxically, the design and the program are simple and complex: a foliation of longitudinal, sails between the project program; tall windows, sets of geometric cutouts, framing, especially from the living room across the pool and its bleachers toward the Atlas range. All in all, the highly admirable element in this residence, is the way that Guilhem Eustache has approached and dealt with the architectural design in this foreign, far away land; a land where he was flown over to design a house where he paid particular attention to the region and the country which provided him with the architectural answers, applied in line with climatic, cultural and economic circumstances.

Mr. Brainwash — often stylized as MBW — is the moniker of Paris-born, Los Angeles‒based filmmaker and street artist Thierry Guetta. According to the Banksy-directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), Guetta began as a proprietor of a clothing store and amateur videographer who filmed street artists through the 2000s and “evolved” into an artist in his own right in a matter of weeks after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. Guetta was first introduced to street art by his cousin, the street artist Invader.. Mr. Brainwash’s uniformly subversive style fuses historic pop imagery and contemporary cultural iconography to create his own pop–graffiti art hybrid. Working primarily with layers of screenprint and stenciled images, Mr. Brainwash’s compositions are emblematic of a graffiti wall inundated with 20th Century iconography. Mr. Brainwash is both sly and playful in his juxtaposition of the cultural idols of the past (Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe) with the icons of today (Kate Moss, Madonna). The vibrant palette and references to Pop Artist like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, add a puckish wink to his unique street art style. To add to his fun-loving persona, Mr. Brainwash uses a special signature and authentication on all of his unique artworks. All unique MBW artworks have his mantra “Life is Beautiful”, his thumbprint, hand-signature, and assigned dollar bill number sequence. The development of this whimsical Pop-Graffiti art style has catapulted MBW to international superstardom, and he continues to garner recognition from art collectors and street art enthusiasts alike. esigner Antoine Peters designed a limited edition hamburger scarf. The silk scarf shows an enlarged hamburger, composed out of round and square pixels. From afar you can recognize the lettuce, tomato and meat of the burger, in close-up it is a cheerful graphic print full of color and texture. In collaboration with photographer Marc Deurloo, Antoine used the scarf to create a socially critical and surreal world, which in a farce-like manner intertwines fashion and photography. This has its negative aspects, but the bun is also a small party, a treat. It is therefore not clear whether I consume, vomit or create my ‘Hamburger scarf’.” Peters says. This is a story about a couple of fashion guys, a Scotsman, Oliver Timsit, and his American mate

,Richard Atkins, on the move in Hong Kong and LA. As fashion guys, they need clothes to ride to work inand after hanging with friends, straight to dinner and following with drinks (and possibly going out till 4am and waking up wondering how you got there) and so on and so fourth, you get the picture‌ they want to keep it simple here; one outfit appropriate for all of the abovewhile still looking (and feeling) fresh. They live life, on a bike (or skateboard, blades etc.) or just rollin from place to place in a car- they are on the move. Man of Steel is a dark, kickass movie that you will not want to go to the restroom during. Directed

by Zack Snyder (300 and Sucker Punch) and the great Christopher Nolan (Inception, the Batman trilogy) is one of the producers. The movie starts off with a bang! The planet Krypton is about to explode due to its unstable core and is about to be overthrown by the evil General Zod, played with snarling perfection by Michael Shannon, and his followers. Jor-El, Russell Crowe, who seems to be building a new career playing larger than life character roles, and his wife Lara decide to launch their newborn son Kal-El in a space pod to Earth, accompanying him the “codex” (which looks like an old skull painted black) to preserve the Kryptonian race. Then Zod murders Jor-El, is convicted with his gang, and is imprisoned for 300 cycles to the Phantom Zone. Baby Kal-El is found in his space pod by Jonathan and Martha Kent, (Kevin Costner & Diane Lane) who name him Clark. Clark’s Kryptonian physiology affords him superhuman abilities on Earth, which cause him confusion and alienation from his peers, but he learns to use his powers to help those around him. Jonathan reveals to a teenage Clark that he is “the answer to the question….that we are not alone and advises him to not use his powers, fearing that the world will reject him. After Jonathan’s death, an adult Clark (the buffed & ripped Henry Cavill) spends years living a nomadic lifestyle, working various crummy jobs under false names and occasionally showing off his Super-Body. He eventually discovers a Kryptonian spaceship that allows him to communicate with the preserved consciousness of Jor-El in the form of a hologram. Lois Lane, (played with intelligent authority p.

by a strawberry blonde Amy Adams) a journalist from the Daily Planet, also discovers the ship while pursuing a story and is rescued by Clark. Lois’s editor Perry White (a heavyset Laurence Fishburne) who rejects her story of a “Superman” who saved her, so Lois traces Clark back to Smallville, Kansas with the intention of writing an exposé. After talking to several Smallville residents including childhood friends Clark rescued, she decides not to reveal his secret. In the meantime, a pissed off Zod having been freed from the Phantom Zone when Krypton exploded, traces the codex/ Kal-El to Earth, where he demands that Earth surrender Kal-El to him or suffer the consequences. One of the best sequences is when Zod’s second-in-command, Faora (played to the angry dyke-ish hilt by Antje Traue) and Superman have an ass-kicking fight in Smallville. Zod later reveals that he intends to use a world engine to transform Earth into a new Krypton, eradicate the human population, and use the codex to repopulate the planet with genetically-engineered Kryptonians. After Clark and Lois escape Zod’s ship, Clark beats the crap out of Faora in Smallville, convincing the military that he is on their side. Zod deploys the world engine in Metropolis and the Ocean. Clark, now dubbed “Superman”, destroys the world engine in the Indian Ocean. The military then uses the space pod that brought Clark/ Kal-El to Earth to destroy Zod’s ship over an already destroyed Metropolis. Only Zod remains, and he and Clark engage in fight to the death over Metropolis. When Zod attempts to murder civilians in revenge for his defeat, Superman is forced to kill him. As the movie ends see Clark taking a job as a reporter working with Lois at the Daily Planet this will give him access to dangerous situations without arousing suspicion, and to be near Lois Lane. ~ R.
