Marrakech

luxe, contemporary medina, Four Seasons offers a refreshing counterpoint to other luxury accommodation in Marrakech. This 16-hectare (40-acre) walled garden sanctuary is threaded with arcades and fountain courtyards, with low-rise accommodations nestled among mature olive and palm trees. Each of the 139 guest rooms – including 27 spacious suites – has a private balcony with contemplative views of the grounds, the historic Menara Gardens next door or the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Elegant and understated yet clearly inspired by Morocco, the décor and furnishings exude tranquility and comfort. The signature touch of Four Seasons is unmistakable in large, well-appointed bathrooms with separate shower and soaking tub. All accommodations offer access to exceptional Four Seasons services, from housekeeping to In-Room Dining. S www.FourSeasons.com/Marrakech S | 8 | July 2011

avid Paul Flores; Iwas born in Tulare, CA. Currently lives in Santa Barbara, CA. Moved to San Francisco in 1996 and became art director at Deluxe Distribution. Before that he was the illustrator at Shorty’s which he still doews to this day.David is known for modifying preexisting murals and has been busy adding his signature flourish to some of JR’s recent wheatpastes in Los Angeles. The results are dynamic, adding subtle depth and intrigue to the faces. The mix of styles works well. S www.DavidFloresArt.com S | 10 | July 2011

ollowing the same principles and design aesthetic of the James Perse Furniture Collection, the James Perse Limited Edition Ping Pong Table is hand-crafted from environmentally farmed solid teak. It combines playability with functionality - remove the net and cover with the optional teak table top to convert the game room into a dining or conference room. S

ommissioned by the City of Santa Monica, Cradle is situated on the exterior wall of a parking structure at a shopping mall – originally designed by Frank Gehry. The site is near the beach, and is heavily trafficked by tourists on foot and in automobiles. An aggregation of mirror polished stainless steel spheres, the sculpture functions structurally like an enormous Newton’s Cradle - the ubiquitous toy found on the desktops of corporate executives in Hollywood films. Each ball is suspended by a cable from a point on the wall and locked in position by a combination of gravity and neighboring balls. The whole array reflects distorted images of passersby. Aside from the Newton’s Cradle reference, the overall shape to elicit things that might be slightly

provocative when inserted into the glitzy Santa Monica urban landscape. On one hand the installation resembles a big banana hammock (the type worn by unashamed men at the beach) and on the other it suggests the female reproductive system. Sometimes we think of it as a giant fly eye with hundreds of little lenses and at others its like sea foam or coral. Sometimes it resembles an urban scaled wall sconce and at others, a kind of imaginary awning for an invisible storefront. Regardless of what it looks like, it was an opportunity to develop a new kind of building system. S www.Ball-Nogues.com

Faces Of Africa

Mario Marino

B

orn 1967 in Austria, based in Germany. Working the last 10 Years as a portrait photographer. Now the first Exhibition in Berlin. Gallery Brockstedt November 4th, 2011 - January 24th, 2012. Mario Marino’s “Faces of Africa“, South of Ethiopia In the spring of 2011 the German based photographer Mario Marino headed to this African origin of mankind with the firm intention to record what before long will be irrevocably lost. He finds villages and pastures recalling the desolate reservations of Native Americans in North America. The pressure of global civilization can be felt everywhere. The voyeuristic glare of the first tourists and in some areas an epidemic alcoholism gradually eclipse cultural identities. Mario Marino’s portraits of the men, women and children are far from offering an orientalistic

perspective on a living environment so breathtakingly different, one always tends to forget that they are, just barely so, contemporary. The minimalistic staging using natural light with a monochrome back drop isolates the individual self from its natural living conditions by this means intensifying the expression of individuality. At second glance it establishes an unusual closeness with an unfamiliar body transforming it into a cipher, which can be read as a hint of the universality of fashion. The pictures are part of a more ambitious project “Faces of Africa” in the tradition of Irving Penn’s “World in a Small Room” and Richard Avedon’s “American West”. Mario Marino sees Africa as the most “belated” continent. His camera tries to capture the visible tracks of a highly endangered cultural diversity.

olce & Gabbana has compiled a book featuring a series of portraits dedicated to each player of the A.C. Milan football team, shot by Marco Falcetta. Dolce & Gabbana’s relationship with sport has been ongoing since Mariano Vivanco shot five Italian football players for its now iconic Spring 2006 underwear campaign, followed by rugby players, swimmers and more football players. For ‘Milan Fashion – Soccer Players Portraits‘, the players were invited to dress themselves in clothes from Dolce & Gabbana’s collection that they felt expressed their own personal style.
